Quality, innovation and safety form the basis of the Treloar philosophy

Over 70 Years of experience in the manufacturing industry and an

ongoing commitment to quality has positioned Treloar as a market

leader and manufacturer of innovative fluid handling products.

Treloar has supplied Loading Systemsthat encompass an extensive range ofapplications, spanning from thepetrochemical to the dairy industry. This catalogue shows the morecommon styles of Loading Arms usedin industry today and is intended asa sample of the large number ofconfigurations that are possible.

Treloar has a long established reputationfor producing high quality, innovativeand safe Loading Systems for thepetroleum and chemical industry. Theterm 'Loading System' is broad, however, it is generally defined as acollection of Swivel Joints, elbows andpipes accompanied by a balancemechanism that form a flexible selfsupporting Arm which facilitates the safetransfer of hazardous, flammable orvaluable liquid products. The definitionitself implies the potential diversity in thedesign of Loading Systems. Treloar workclosely with clients to custom designLoading Systems that best suit theirparticular applications.

Loading Arms range in diameter from50–100mm (2”–4”), while SubmergedService Arms (Floating Suctions) rangefrom 50–200mm (2”–9”).

Loading Arms can be constructed fromcarbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium,or a combination of these materials.Other materials and sizes are alsoavailable for specialised applications.

Loading Arms can be either manuallyoperated by one person or remotelycontrolled by means of pneumatic orhydraulic actuators. As industries arebecoming more aware and responsiveto environmental issues, Treloar LoadingSystems can offer an environmentallysound solution to the extremely criticalprocess of transferring hazardousproducts from bulk storage tanks toroad or rail vehicles.

Treloar is committed to the philosophyof Quality Assurance and is certified toISO9002. Quality procedures are inplace to manage the manufacturingprocess from initial design to finalinspection, testing and packing. Treloaralso maintains high quality weldingstandards that comply with AS4041 orASME B31.3.

State of the art CAD (Computer AidedDesign) systems are used, together withour substantial knowledge andexperience to optimise our Loader

designs. All Loaders are hydrostaticallytested to ensure they meet our stringentquality standards.

The company offers in-depth technicalassistance, our sales representatives arehighly trained and will co-ordinate eachstage involved in solving a clients’transfer problems. This personalisedand professional service extendsbeyond the point of sale, ensuring on-going customer satisfaction.

A Loading Arm can be used where aflexible hose is utilised to transfer liquid. There are several significant advantagesin using Loading Systems in place offlexible hoses:

• A Loading System is fully selfsupporting and balanced to allowthe operator to easily position theArm. The need to lift heavy andcumbersome hoses is eliminated, thus providing greater safety for theoperator.

• Faster transfer rates can beachieved with larger diameterloading systems, which areimpractical with hoses.

• Loading Systems offer a controlledsequence of motion, which is bothpredictable and reliable. It isperfectly suited when full automationof the loading/unloading process isrequired. The unpredictable natureof hoses are generally consideredunsuitable for such applications.

• Flexible hose failure, will result inthe complete replacement of thehose assembly, whereas, a LoadingSystem only requires a simple sealreplacement. 2

TOP LOADING

Single Arm, Fixed ReachE–series (with valve) J–series (without valve)

This arm incorporates only three swivel joints and is designed for use in top loading installations where thevehicle is located at a fixed distance from the riser pipe. Two swivels at the inlet permit both vertical and lateralmovement of the assembly and the third swivel allows the drop pipe to remain vertical at all operating angles.

Primarily used to load and unload rail cars through open domes in installations where the cars can be accuratelyspotted, the single arm configuration can also be used for tank truck applications. Some allowance for misspottingis possible with the single arm and increases as the diameter of the hatch opening increases.

As the name suggests, top loading involves the transfer of product from bulk storage tanks to road or rail vehicles via topmounted hatches or fittings. Commonly used in splash fill applications where the hatch opening serves both as an entry and afree vent. This form of loading is generally recommended for non flammable products. As environmental regulations becomemore stringent, top loading has become the domain of chemical loading facilities where potential product loss from bottomentry fittings cannot be tolerated.

BOTTOM LOADING

Unsupported boom type bottom loaderG–Series

Designed to provide flexible long range operation without the use of hose, this heavy duty configuration is both reliable andeasy to use. A minimum of five swivel joints offer complete flexibility in making tight connections for loading and unloading rail cars andtank trucks, and servicing aviation refuelers. The outboard swivel and arm adjusts for any changes in elevation or tilting thatmay result as the vehicle is loaded or unloaded.

Many variations of this arm are possible and can be equipped with dry disconnect couplers, unions, quick couplings, or othercustomer specified end fittings to make connections on the side, at the rear, or underneath the vehicle. The intermediate swivelis often inverted to achieve the low profile and clearances needed to connect to the underside of a rail car.

Standard practice for filling petroleum tank trucks in Australia, bottom loading creates less turbulence while fitting, thusreducing the danger of generating static electricity. Bottom loading not only reduces vapours which can be an environmentalhazard, this system can also be easily adapted to fully recover vapours displaced during loading. Speed is a key advantageof bottom loading because tanks can be filled faster and a number of compartments can be loaded simultaneously. Whilesafety and simplicity are also an important feature of bottom loading facilities.

Scissor ArmC–series (with valve) H–series (without valve)

Extremely versatile, this arm is designed specifically for top loading installations where a variable operating range isrequired. The secondary arm rotates 360° in the horizontal plane, providing spotting allowance of up to twice its length.

Commonly used to handle high flow rates and withstand rough usage in tank truck loading applications, the scissor arm isalso an excellent choice for rail car loading installations where cars are frequently mis-spotted. Generally balanced with thesecondary arm fully extended, the arm will automatically rise as the secondary arm is rotated 180° to the parked position asshown in the illustration.

A–Frame ArmM–Series ML–Series (LPG applications)

The A–frame is one of the more popular loading arm configurations. It provides good flexibility, long reach and is convenientand easy to use. Like the unsupported boom type, it adjusts for any changes in the elevation or tilting of the vehicle duringloading. The arm stores neatly in an upright, near vertical position, allowing it to swing around easily for loading from eitherside of the island.

The A-frame's compact storage envelope also allowsthese arms to be installed relatively close together, often on risers that are approximately the same heightas the vehicle connection. They can also be mountednext to one another on staggered risers to achievearm cross-over for simultaneous loading ofmultiple compartment trucks.

Welded assemblies in steel and stainless steelwith ANSI 300 inlet flange and seamlesspiping are suitable for handling liquifiedpetroleum gases (LPG) including propaneand butane.

Short/long range hose loaderSRH–Series (short range) LRH–Series (long range)

Generally recognised as the industry standard design for bottom loadingof petroleum tank trucks, the RH series arms offer full cross-overcapabilities that conform to the API CP–6 code of practice, loadingenvelope. This design provides a simple yet efficient means ofsimultaneously coupling to multi compartment tank trucks.

Commonly installed as a set of four or six arms with lateral spacing of600mm and vertical spacing of 400mm for torsion spring balance units or550mm for gas spring balance units. The arms are constructed from steeland aluminium with a 1.9m long stainless steel braided drop hose.Varying length aluminium spool pieces fitted between the hose and theapex swivel allow the arms to be mounted on staggered riser pipes. TheRH series arms are normally constructed from 100NB pipe that terminatewith an API coupler, although, other sizes are available for specialapplications.

Supported Boom ArmB–Series

The supported boom arm provides dependable, low maintenance service in high usage installations. Due to the boom mounteddesign, no heavy loads are placed on the inlet swivel, thus minimising wear.

The supported boom arm consists of a fixed reach loader mounted on a swivelling boom that is attached to a permanentstructure via a pillow block bearing for added strength and support. This configuration provides maximum flexibility for mis-spotting and longer reaches from the loading rack to the tank truck or rail car. Both the boom and the arm can be folded backagainst the rack for convenient, compact storage, away from the traffic flow. A variety of boom designs and configurations areavailable to meet the needs of virtually any installation.

Unsupported Boom ArmGT–Series

This popular style loader is designed for those installations where it is undersirable or impractical to mount a supported BoomArm. For example, many rail car sites have no support columns or overhead structures to which a supported Boom can beattached.

The unsupported Boom offers the same advantages as the supported Boom Arm, but maximum reaches are generallysomewhat less. When necessary, total reach can be extended by increasing the size of the base Swivel Joint.

The unsupported Boom Arm is an excellent alternative to the Scissor Arm for variable reach applications, especially in larger sizeswhere the outboard components are relatively heavy.

LPG Loader SetGL–Series

Designed specifically for loading and unloading LPG and Ammonia, the GL series offer all the features and benefits of theunsupported boom type bottom loader. Some of the key design features of this arm can be found in the end fittings. The armitself terminates with an ANSI 300 flange which in turn is connected to an isolation valve, breakaway and an ACMEcoupling. A small spring return ball valve is also connected to a side port in the breakaway which then connects to a flexiblevent line that runs parallel to the loading arm. This vent valve ensures that when the main isolation valve is closed and thearm is ready for disconnection from the tank truck, the small volume down stream of the isolation valve can be fullydepressurised before the ACME coupling is released. The end fittings are balanced separately by means of gas springs whichallows the operator to easily position, connect or disconnect the arm as required.

Treloar provides a complete range of submerged service loading systems that fall into three broad categories:

I) Floating SuctionsThese assemblies are designed for use in storage tanks where little or no contamination can be tolerated, such as aircraft jetfuel. Since the fuel near the top of the tank is least likely to contain water or foreign particles, these assemblies float near thetop and draw from the uncontaminated fuel.

Submerged service Swivel Joints used in Floating Suctions contain additional o-rings to retain the lubricating oil present in theball race and also to prevent potential contamination of the fuel. Generally constructed from aluminium, Floating Suctionconfigurations vary with tank geometry. Other materials of construction are available for special applications.

II) Floating Roof Drains

Liquids that have a low vapour pressure will evaporate rapidly. To minimise this effect, a travelling roof that floats on thesurface of the liquid maintaining a constant volume vapour space, is utilised. This, however, raises another issue. How do youremove the excess water bought on by the rain and condensation? The solution is to install a floating roof drain, which is aseries of collapsible pipes connected by submerged service swivels that funnel the excess water from a central drain point inthe roof. No additional flotation devices are required as the buoyancy force generated by the roof will support the weight ofthe roof drain. The number of swivels used on a roof drain depends on whether the floating roof is constrained by guidesand cannot rotate or if it is free to rotate.

SUBMERGED SERVICE APPLICATIONS

Standard Cast

Split Flange

Standard Fabricated

The Swivel Joint is considered the key component of a Loading System. It provides the flexibility forthe rigid pipes while maintaining a positive seal throughout its operating envelope. TreloarSwivels fall into two categories, standard and split flange. The standard Swivel containsa double ball race which is machined to precise tolerances while an o-ring sealingelement contains the product within. For more heavy duty applications thesplit flange Swivel offers a greater moment load carrying capacity. A unique feature of this Swivel is that the seal can be replacedwithout removing the ball bearings. The split flange Swivelwas designed with a single or double ball race optionand can be internally lined to handle extremelyaggressive chemicals. With the appropriatecombination of Swivels and Elbows, multiple planes of rotation can beachieved to provide thenecessary flexibility for agiven application.

III) Floating Skimmer

In instances where the contaminants are lighter than the product and float on the surface, a Floating Skimmer is required toremove the contaminants. These assemblies consist of a skimmer tray and adjustable floats connected together by pipe andsubmerged service swivels. When the difference in specific gravity between the product and the contaminants is small, theflotation devices can be adjusted such that the skimmer tray remains at the desired level. Primarily used in applications wherethe product specific gravity is similar to, or greater than that of water. Floating Skimmers offer a simple yet highly effectivemeans of continually removing surface contamination.

While Swivel Joints provide the flexibility, the Balance Mechanism provides the ergonomic support for the operator. It ensuresthat vertical movement can be easily achieved without imparting excessive loads to the operator. Treloar offers acomprehensive range of Balance Mechanisms that will suit almost any application.

Counterweight Balance (CWB)The simplest of all Balance Mechanisms, Counterweights offer a perfectly balanced system through the full range of motion ofthe Loading Arm. Unlike other mechanisms, Counterweights do not have a neutral balance point and will remain in anyposition without returning to a neutral position. The Counterweight Balance, however, requires a larger space behind theLoading Arm for both lateral swing and vertical movement.

Torsion Spring Balance (TSB)One of the most common balance units used in Loading Systems, the Torsion Spring Balance is compact in design and robustin construction. The unit consists of a Torsion Spring made from high tension alloy steel with excellent fatigue resistantproperties that winds tight as the arm is lowered, thus providing a counter torque which balances the arm. Four different sizeTorsion Spring assemblies with progressively larger lifting capacities are available.

Compression Spring Balance (CSB)This Balance Mechanism comprises of a long Compression Spring encased in a square section tube that compresses as thearm is lowered. This unique patented adjusting mechanism is what sets this balance unit apart from the other compressionbalance mechanism. Located outside the spring casing, the twin adjusting screw mechanism allows the operator to controlboth spring tension and the effective lever arm with standard tools. The combined adjustment of these two parameters resultin a precisely balanced system. Suitable for applications with limited space and varying load conditions that require regularadjustment of the balance unit.

Gas Spring Balance (GSB)Supported by Twin Gas Pressurised Springs for added safety, this balance unit has a low spring rate that maintains an almostconstant force throughout its range of motion. A simple screw adjustment changes the effective lever arm to suit the prevailingload conditions. Ideally suited for applications where only a limited vertical movement is required while the surroundingtemperature remains relatively stable. Temperature variations influence the thrust force of the gas spring by approximately0.4% per 1°C.

Clearly one must carefully consider all the features, benefits and limitations of the Balance Mechanisms before selection. However, for more specialised applications, pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders maybe used in conjunction with balance units such as CWBand CSB to remotely actuate the arm or function as a hold-down device. They can also be used independently to both balanceand actuate robotic loading systems.

For highly specialised applications, Treloar offers custom engineered Loading Systems that meet the needs of our clients. Some examples of these specialised applications are as follows:

Vapour RecoveryA set of parallel arms that loads the product and recover the displaced vapour simultaneously. Either a hatch plug or vapourshield may be used as the end connection.

Steam Traced/JacketedArms that carry heated product such as bitumen (ashphalt) require steam tracing or jacketing to maintain flow through the arm.

Gravity ReturnPrimarily used on counterweight arms, the gravity return feature allows the arm to return to the parked position automaticallyonce loading is completed.

By-Pass ArmsWhen Swivel Joints are not suited to a particular application such as the transfer of food grade fluids, a bypass loader formsan external skeleton that supports the primary product hose.

Robotic ArmsPneumatic or hydraulic actuators can be attached to loading arms to achieve full automated motion. Ideally suited for remotecontrol applications.

Marine Loading ArmsFor ship to shore product transfer where high flow rates require large diameter pipe, Marine Loaders provide an efficientmeans of bulk product transfer. Ranging in diameter from 100mm (4”) to 600mm (24”), the Marine Loaders are designed tomaximise safety and minimise pollution as they are primarily used in environmentally fragile areas.

Sensory InterlocksProximity sensors placed in strategic locations enable a Loading System to be fully interlocked with its surroundings. Thisfeature can greatly enhance both safety and efficiency.

Pneumatic/Hydraulic ArticulationIn instances where access is limited or loadstoo great for a standard balance mechanism, pneumatic or hydraulic actuators can be usedto manoeuvre and position a Loading Armeither remotely or via a control lever on theArm itself.

Safety Breakaway CouplingsWhen the potential risk of a driveaway exist, a Safety Breakaway Couplingprovides the necessary weak link in a Loading System. This ensures the safeseparation between the Loading Arm and bulk transport vehicle and stopsproduct flow.

KamvalokPrevents spillage from both routine and accidental disconnects. A unique, built-inValve in the Coupler and a spring loaded poppet in the mating Adaptorautomatically close when disconnected. The cam and groove design allows forfast, easy and reliable connection and disconnection in any orientation.
