Executive 2020 New Years Address

As associates returned from shutdown and the year 2020 began, HTM President, Takao

Suzuki and Vice President, Scott Henderson greeted them with their annual New Years

Address.

Mr. Suzuki began by reviewing HTM’s accomplishments from 2019. He noted that,

“mass production of Co-ax Transfer started in 2018 and continued to stabilize in 2019

and production of the FH3 began and good quality has been maintained throughout

2019. This is a result of each associates hard work”.

He went on to say, “because business conditions are changing faster and in greater

scale than ever before, we must accommodate changes and adjust production plans as

well as business plans on a daily basis. For those changes, all associates involved

responded quickly to meet the daily changes”.

He said, “each associate made a big

contribution to improve our characteristics.

as a result, I truly believe that HTM has

accomplished remarkable production and

business activities”.

Mr. Suzuki also talked about the activities outside of the production operation. He

reflected on the 2019 NH-Circle North American Bloc Convention hosted by HTM in

October.

As many positive comments were received

Mr. Suzuki thanked all associates for their

support in making the convention a success.

He said, “it is quite impressive how the plant

environment had transformed, that it almost

feels like a different plant. I am certain that

we communicated the message that HTM is

a wonderful plant”.

He also reflected on the Technical Exchange and

that HTM participated in the all Honda Technical

Exchange in Japan, where one of HTM’s teams

presented to Mr. Hachigo, Honda Motor President

and other executives that were in attendance.

This was a great opportunity for many to recognize

the originality and the ability for execution that

HTM possesses.

Mr. Suzuki reflected on President Hachigo’s

visit to HTM during 2018, when Mr. Hachigo

stated, “I have high hopes for HTM to lead

the drivetrain business in electrification”.

As we follow the production plans for our

products, some will expand into full volume.

We’ve also improved our maturation flow

and front-loaded even more.

Mr. Suzuki said, “Considering the undertakings discussed so far, we set the direction for

HTM into the future.”

He also stated, “at this time we must go back to basics and re-think what the ideal image

of our business should be. My job is to communicate as much as possible that HTM will

become a large and indispensable presence for future Honda. To that end, we must be

clear what we must accomplish”.

Mr. Suzuki identified three viewpoints that have been established to help us meet our

goals.

The Three Viewpoints:

1. Establish a strong linkage between New Model activity and existing business as we

steer our business.

We must synchronize with New Model timing to innovate our work environment in

the most efficient way.

We must choose the good balance of improving our existing characteristics and the

cost associated with those improvements.

2. Simplify Manufacturing

We must work to improve the flexibility between current mass production and new

models.

5

Executive 2020 New Years Address

Page 7: Qually T Welcomes Associates Back from Shutdown · Suzuki and Vice President, Scott Henderson greeted them with their annual New Years Address. Mr. Suzuki began by reviewing HTM’s

3. We must collaborate with suppliers and look at the transmission as one whole unit

to realize a higher quality product at a lower cost.

We are still clarifying our direction for this activity, but we intend to have a solid

working system as we get closer to 2030.

Mr. Suzuki completed his address by

saying, “This is a very important year

when we start with a fresh viewpoint

as we streamline North American and

HTM business organizations and some

systems to pursue simple manufacturing toward the goal of improving

the competitiveness of HTM transmissions even further. I cherish the communication

with everyone and intend to lead HTM for further advancement and growth of the

company into the future.

At this time HTM Vice President, Scott Henderson came to the podium and highlighted

business results in the areas of Safety, Environmental, Quality, Cost, Delivery and

Morale.

While recognizing HTM’s Environmental activities,

he stated, “Blue skies for our children continues to

be HTM’s focus. Last year HTM received the

Honda North American Environmental Award for

best overall results. We will continue to study ways

to improve our environmental footprint. Thank you for

your support”.

Mr. Henderson also stated, “I know our customers appreciate your efforts to improve

quality as gear PPM has significantly improved and our mission PPM is at an historically

low level and there has been no interruption to any of our customers parts deliveries

during 2019. Thank you for your efforts”.

Mr. Henderson continued to share his thoughts on HTM’s

accomplishments from 2019 as he commented on the

NH-Circle North American Bloc Convention success and

the introduction of the HTM mascot Qually T, who was

in attendance at the New Years Address welcoming and

taking pictures with associates.

He also reflected on Associate Involvement as he thanked

associates for their participation in activities outside of their

normal role & responsibilities. 52% of HTM associates are involved in these type of

activities.

Mr. Henderson completed his comments by saying, “I will continue to study how to

streamline our organization within HTM as well as create an organizational structure that

will support HPPG and HDM as a regional mother. HTM’s future is bright, we are poised

to be ready for the next steps in transmission, drivetrain, and gear production”.

He stated, “going forward our mantra must be “F.A.S.T.”

F – Focus

S – Simple

As we strategize for our future, and we continue to include how to be “F.A.S.T” in our

Moving Inclusion & Diversity Forward

BRG’s are a key component from helping to attract new talent to HTM to allowing current

associates to be engaged in multiple activities. These associate-led, company-supported groups

that include associates aligned across broad constituencies such as gender, race/ethnicity, ability,

life stage and experiences are already helping to enhance Honda’s competitive positioning by

impacting the four areas of Commerce, Community, Culture and Career.

HTM currently has four BRG’s (AARCH) African American Resource Collaborative of Honda,

(HYP) Honda Young Professionals, (TLG) The Leadership Group and (WPH) Women Powering

Honda. While we currently host these four groups, there are forty-eight groups that are

represented within the Honda family across North America. These groups include, but are

not limited to, LDIA, Spectrum, Earth and Military Veterans.

If you are interested in starting a group or joining one of HTM’s current groups, please contact

Pilate Bradley in Administration or join us for a BRG information session on Thursday, April 2,

2020 in the Accord Room.

I recently attended a Leadership training class and before we

were dismissed we were asked what Quote we would want our

associates to say about us as Leaders in Honda. One of the

participant’s in the class spoke up and said “To be the kind of

Leader that I would want my son or daughter to work for”. Being

the parent of 3 children that will someday (hopefully) go out and

work, this Quote really resonated with me and made me think

about working at Honda. Would they work at a company that is

fair, where respect for the individual is shown and have an

environment of inclusion with open and honest communications?

In this quarters segment of Leadership Insights we feature Greg Dawson. Greg has

been with Honda Transmission for 21 years. He has worked in several different roles

in Quality and New Model including a 2 year assignment in Japan. He is currently the

Division Manager of the ATM Manufacturing Division here at Honda Transmission.

In today’s segment he would like to share the importance of operating with Ethics and

Integrity and how that fits in to Honda’s goal to be a company that Society wants to

exist.

The Products that Honda Transmission make are very important to the Safety and

well being of our customers. When I worked in Quality I always worked with the

mindset to do the right thing. I remember one time when there were about 200 cars

that were built with Transmissions that had parts in them that didn’t have the required

Heat Treatment process. There was a chance that the parts could wear and the

transmissions would fail sooner then expected causing problems for our customers.

Even though the cost was very high to bring the cars back and to do all the repairs- it

was the right thing to do. There is a Honda Proverb that says “Make sure we always

have justice on our side”, I think this is something we can all apply in our jobs

everyday with the decisions we have to make. In preparing for this article, I found an

old story from Mr. Honda about the code of Ethics for people that Manufacture

Products for customers that I would like to share.

The Code of Ethics for People Who Manufacture Products for Customers

Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Motor Company, once said, “In general, people tend to blame a technological immaturity for products never having been improved. However, I have found out recently that the majority of the reasons for NOT being able to improve products lie more with the lack of morality in the people at a plant who manufacture the products than with the technology itself. For example, vehicles of a certain model type made by an auto maker has had a defect of a loose joint for some time, and somehow the company did not do anything yet to correct the problem even though they were aware of it for a long time and have ample technological capabilities to make an improvement. This is because the company lacks a passion (eagerness) to take a step to make improvement, in other words, they are deficient of the code of ethics that make people feel some obligations of that they should deliver the best product (service) possible for the customers who have bought their products. In the modern manufacturing industry, only the company who is keen to the feelings of the masses and can deliver products that bring a joy to and win popularity from the public can prosper and be loved by the society. And from all of this, pride for your own work and self-respect are likely to grow with you. If you have the true spirit of customer service, in other words, the code of ethics as an employee is intact, you will go any length to make necessary improvements for customer satisfaction. The reason why we don’t gain customer satisfaction is because the mind to satisfy customers is NOT with us. The fundamental principle of work naturally lies in the morality of each working person. I have been saying since some time ago that ‘invention/ingenuity is the wisdom(ideas) born under the pressure of necessity (or as a last resort)’. With it I am adamant in my belief that high morality will surely bring about excellent originality/invention. The originality/invention does not only apply to technology. At each workplace where there is high morality for work being prevailed, you will see superior originality/invention is born, best improvements are made and great progress is achieved.”

Based on the article and the words of our founder Mr. Honda, good ethics is good

business and will help us make Honda a company that society wants to exist. High levels

of integrity is correlated with positive outcomes.

Even if you are not in a leadership position, every Associate at HTM can be a role model

for others. Let everyone see you practicing the Honda Core Values and that you will go to

any length to make improvements for our customers. That is the true spirit of customer

service and what makes a Honda, with the who being what really matters.
