Over 500 young mathematicians from 13 countries of the world including Nepal, Egypt, Iran, South Korea, Thailand, Bulgaria, Russia, England, South Africa, Bhutan, Philippines, Nigeria and various states of India are participating in this Convention. Around 500 budding scientists, scientists and experts from 22 countries including Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Hong Kong, Iran, Macedonia, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, the world closer and afford them an opportunity to exchange their experiences, knowledge and views on various matters of human interest. see details on page 4 Thailand, Ukraine, USA and India came together on a global platform to compete in various competitions held at the 4-day International Science Festival ‘Quanta-2006’ organised by CMS, Chowk. Different interactive competitions were organised with the aim of bringing the children of Around 300 students of various countries of the world including Russia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and various states of India participated in the 7th International Astronomy Olympiad organized by CMS Chowk at CMS Kanpur Road auditorium.Renowned astronomers and scientists of various countries delivered illuminating lectures at the olympiad. The Mayor of Lucknow, Dr Dinesh Sharma, inaugurated the International Youth Fest and Exhibition while, Mr Girdhar Gopal Gulati, Editor, United Bharat, gave away the prizes. see results on page 6 Chief Justices, Judges, legal luminaries and renowned peace promoters from 88 countries of the world will assemble on a common platform to hold discussions and find solutions to formulate and enforce international laws for safeguarding the future of the 2 billion children of the world and to strengthen the United Nations Organization. These eminent personalities are arriving here at Lucknow to participate in the 7th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World being organized by City Montessori School, Lucknow from 8th December 2006. The conference will be inaugurated by the former Chief Justice of India, Hon'ble Mr Justice V N Khare while Hon'ble Mr Justice P N Bhagwati, former CJ India and Chairman, Human Rights Committee, Geneva will preside over the inaugural ceremony and Hon'ble Justice C G Weeramantry, former Vice President, International Court of Justice and former Judge, Sri Lanka, will deliver the keynote address. Former President of Mauritius, Hon'ble Mr Cassim Uteem is specially arriving here to attend the Conference. Over 2000 entries from Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and India were received for various competitions. Chief Guest, Mr R K Mittal, IAS, Commissioner, Lucknow Division honoured the prize winners. Minister in President’s Office, South Africa, H.E. Young geography enthusiasts representingprestigious schools of Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan,Mauritius and various states of India expressed the viewthat the welfare of human race was possible only whenman lived in harmony with his natural environment.Through their participation in the 5-day 5th InternationalGeography Olympiad organized by CMS,Mahanagar(III), the young geographers from India andabroad called upon the people to save humanity bykeeping the earth clean, green and prosperous. These700 geography students, teachers and experts had arrivedhere from 84 different schools of the world to participatein Geofest-2006 organized at the World Unity ConventionCentre, CMS Degree College, Kanpur Road from 5 to 9November 2006.

‘Geofest-2006’ was inaugurated in a grand way on5 November 2006. Chief Guest, Ms Mary Lee Elden,renowne d ge ographer and Director, NationalGeography Olympiad, USA lit the lamp of learning toinaugurate the function. Teams from 84 schools of Indiaand abroad were introduced at the opening ceremony.CMS students presented a scintillating cu lturalprogramme. During the next four days these studentsparticipated in a series of exciting events and spread themessage of green and clean earth and peace and unity inthe whole world.

Addressing the students from various countries atthe inaugural ceremony, Ms Elden said that CMS isworthy of high praise for its laudable initiative oforganizing this international level geography contest. Shesaid that the society had high expectations from theseyoung geography enthusiasts and they should rise tothe occasion to fulfill their moral duty of keeping theearth green and glowing. The Principal of CMSMahanagar and Convener of Geofest 2006, Mrs Prema

Subramaniam, said that the purpose of organizing thisGeography Olympiad is to awaken the students towardskeeping the earth clean and green. At the same time, itaims at developing students’ skills and confidence forparticipating in the coming International GeographyOlympiad. Extending a warm welcome to theparticipating students’ teams, scientists and experts fromIndia and abroad, CMS Founder, Mr Jagdish Gandhisaid that through intermingling of thoughts and ideas,this International Geography Olympiad will encouragethe feelings o f World Peace, World Uni ty andbrotherhood. The competitions held at Geofest 2006included Geotalk, Create Your Taste, Voice and Vision,Geotech, Paste Your Taste, Catchy Caption, Throughthe lens’ Eye, Geoquiz, Model Display, Model Makingetc. The contests began with a lively Geotalk Debate on

the topic ‘Urbanization is a blessing.’ This highlyinterest ing and informat ive debate was very ablyconducted and chaired by Mr Carlyl Mac Farland. Inthe junior section, a wonderful collage contest, ‘CreateYour Taste’ was organized on the topic ‘Contribution ofCollage industry in protection of environment.’ Around84 students participated in it.

In Voice and Vision contest, the teams formedchoreographic groups and presented a musical saga withdance and music melting together on the theme ‘Treesadorn the earth.’ Debate held on the topic ‘HumanGeography rather than physical and regional geographyneeds greater attention’ was equally interesting. Younggeographers’ expressed thei r views with greatconfidence. Mr Carlyl Mac Farland chaired the debatewith great expertise throwing in expert comments at theend and lacing it with his quick wit and humour.

In the Geotech competition, the students made

multimedia presentation on the topic ‘The Ever-expandinguniverse’ and threw light on the latest discoveries in spaceresearch. They exhibited extra-ordinary enthusiasm anda desire to do something new in this field. In Paste YourTaste (Collage) contest organized for seniors, the topicwas ‘The economic development of your nation.’Students of various countries went all out to highlightthe progress made by their country in different sectorsof the economy. They gave full expression to theirthoughts and ideas and revealed profound knowledgeand understanding. In Catchy Caption (slogan writing)contest, around 87 teams jumped into the fray. Theymade interesting slogans on the topic ‘Green Wealth forGood Health.’ The slogans were well decorated withpictures. In ‘Through the lens’ eye’ contest, there were79 teams comprising 2 members each. Each team hadto submit 2 photographs which the children hadthemselves shot. The photographs were accompaniedby a write-up exceeding not more than 150 words. TheModel Display Contest saw 42 students' teamsparticipating, each represented by 2 students. Thestudents had to assemble and display their self-madeuseful models on rain water harvesting. In the ModelMaking Contest for juniors, as many as 85 teamsparticipated. There were 2 students in each team. Thestudents used paper, cloth, cotton, colours etc with clay,plaster of paris and water to make their models in thesand trays provided to them. The topic was ‘Landformsmade by tectonic movements’. Renowned academiciansand experts judged the various events. The InternationalGeography Olympiad concluded with a grand prizedistribution ceremony organized at the venue on 9December. Chief Guest of the ceremony, Mr Ram BodhMaurya, Municipal Commissioner, Nagar Nigam,Lucknow, gave away the prizes to the winners.

International Astronomy Olympiad 2006organised by CMS, Chowk

Renowned astronomers and scientists of variouscountries delivered enlightening lectures and satisfied theeagerness and curiosity of students in the growing scienceof astronomy at the 2-day International AstronomyOlympiad organized by CMS, Chowk on 19 and 20November 2006. Students from different countries ofthe world were apprised of the vastness of the universewhich is limitless with no beginning and no end, whereinman is but a speck of dust but nevertheless, the highestcreation of God. We should forget our mutual differencesand live together as one human race. Associate Professorof Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad andrenowned astronomer, Dr J. S. Bagla, Dr TarunSauradeep, a renowned astronomer from Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Puneand renowned astronomer and former Director of NehruPlanetarium, Col. J. E. S. Singh were among the keyspeakers.

The four-day International Science Festival ‘Quanta-2006’ organized by CMS, Chowk was inaugurated amidsta grand ceremony by Chief Guest, Hon’ble Mr JusticeVishnu Sahai, Chairman, UP Law Commission andFormer Acting Chief Justice of Allahabad HighCourt by lighting the lamp of learning at the World UnityConvention Centre, CMS Degree College, Kanpur Road.The presence of about 500 young scientists, scientistsand experts from 22 countries including Austria, Brazil,Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Hong Kong, Iran,Macedonia, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland,Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, Sri Lanka,Thailand, Ukraine, USA and India created a mini worldfilled with the feelings of unity and brotherhood. CMSstudents presented several educational-cultural items inhonour of the participating students from India andabroad and these students teams introduced themselvesin style.

Speaking at the inaugural function, the Chief Guest,Hon’ble Mr Justice Vishnu Sahai said that there is anurgent need today to combine science with humanity.Progress in science is the surest way towards humandevelopment. The computer, internet, website, aeroplane,television etc. are all gifts of science and these aresymbols of human upliftment. If we have to bring aboutquality in our lives, it is necessary to take help fromscience and technological progress. CMS studentspresented a scintillating educational-cultural programmein honour of the experts and young scientists fromvarious countries. According a warm welcome to theforeign students, scientists and experts besides students’teams from various prestigious schools of India, theFounder-Manager of CMS, Mr Jagdish Gandhi saidthat this grand science festival aims at encouraging thefeelings of World Peace, World Unity and brotherhoodthrough exchange of culture, civilization, language,scientific outlook and thoughts between the students of

various countries. The Convener of InternationalScience Festival ‘Quanta-2006’ and Principal of CMSChowk, Mrs Sadhana Bedi said on the occasion, thatthis event will be very helpful in giving a human directionto the scientific attitude of today’s youth. On the basisof the review of the scientific development in presentscenario we can conclude that the new millennium willhave excellent scientific possibilities.The competitions which began on the second day ofthe four-day Internationa l Sc ienc e Fe stival‘QUANTA-2006’ saw interesting views presented bystudents of various schools and colleges of the worldEminent judges from Poland, Finland, Austria,Slovakia etc. judged the competitive events.

The debate focussed attention on the burningproblem of environmental protection. Students came upwith surprising performance in the debate held on thetopic ‘Environmental awareness is a fashionablediversion. The debate was skilfully conducted by MrCarlyl MacFarland of Lucknow Christian College. Inthe Collage Contest, the topic was ‘Progress beyondfossils : New fuels for the new age.’ The time allowedwas three hours. Students were awarded marks for theircreativity, artistry, neatness and interpretation of idea.Colour and art mingled to make each presentation newand unique. Around 58 teams of students from variouscountries participated in the collage contest. Judges werefull of praise and appreciation for the students imaginationand presentation of ideas.

The Acta Mathematica Quiz held special interestas it explored the various branches of mathematics andtested the maths brains gathered at Quanta with a seriesof questions ranging from simple to complex. Studentscame out with spontaneous answers astonishing theaudience with their powers of mental calculation. In theMental Ability Quiz, 10 teams which took part in thefinal quiz were tested for their sharpness of brain,memory, ability to perform in stress and quick and logicalthinking and reasoning powers. In the Astronomy Quiz,students explored the world of stars, planets, celestialbodies, comets and their relationship with each otherand the earth. The judges were all praise for the curiosityand talents of the young astronomers. All the quizzeswere conducted by renowned English Reader, LucknowChristian College, Mr Carlyl McFarland in his inimitablestyle.

In Science Model Display Contest, the studentsdisplayed several socially useful self made science models.39 teams participated in the Computer SoftwareSolutions competition. The languages used in thiscontest were C, C++ and Java and students had to answer5 questions in 4 hours long computer programming.

Computer brains vied for supremacy in this keenlycontested event. After this, renowned English Lecturer,Mr Carlyl, McFarland conducted the Science Quiz inhis witty style. After the written quiz, 15 teams wereselected to participate in the final quiz. The questionsraised covered various aspects of science. Studentsunleashed their talents and answered the questions withamazing speed and alacrity to the surprise of theaudience.

The four day International Science FestivalQuanta-2006 concluded with a grand PrizeDistribution and Closing Ceremony held at thevenue on 18 November. CMS students presented ahighly entertaining cultural programme in honour of theparticipants of 22 countries. The Chief Guest, ShriAkhilesh Singh, Bureau Chief, Time s of India,Kanpur gave away the prizes to the winners of thevarious competitions and awarded them medals,certificates, shields and trophies.

Convener of Eureka-2006 and Principal,CMS Anand Nagar, Mrs Abha Anant said that Eurekais one such talent hunt where students learn the lessonsof unity, love, peace and togetherness through differentcontests so that they become the true citizens of theworld.

For the next 3 days the students performed withgreat enthusiasm in various competitions anddelighted the audience. In Rhetoric Chanteuse, thechi ldren eagerly performed in singing elocut ioncombining their poetic talents to the tune of music. InKaleidoscopic Dawn, the students proved their talentsthrough multimedia presentation on the topic ‘Evolutionin technology.’ Around 60 teams participated in thiscontest that combined technology with all art andknowledge. In Tintinnabulation on Wall Street, theprimary class students participated in teams of 5members each. Each team had to advertise an idea or aproduct. The judges were amazed to see students’ skillsin organizing their advertising campaigns. In Vox Populi:

A cry against terrorism contest the teams comprising5 members each had to launch a campaign againstterrorism. They made skilful and effective use of musicand voice at the campaign. In Sleight of Hand (collage)contest primary students expressed their artistic abilitiesand wisdom through their collage-making at this contest.The topic was ‘My journey into the world of fantasy.’A time limit of 2 hours was given for making colourfulcollages. Messages were highlighted through sloganswritten on the collages and pictures from magazines

pasted to reinforce the main idea and concept.In Vanity Fair contest each team comprising 5

students had to present their skit in 12 minutes with 2minutes for stage presentation. In Free Your Mindcontest, the participating students displayed their projectson the theme – ‘A world where fear has no place.’Each team had 5 students. These primary level childrenwere given a sand tray and they made their models on it.Through the pro jects, the children showed howterrorism, war and violence, the anti social activitiesleading to destruction of mankind can be eradicated. InLaudable Wisecrac ks competition the studentspresented an example of their spontaneity by answeringdifferent questions. In a sporty manner, the students’contestants’ all round personalities were tested.

Merry Queries (Quiz) contest was conducted by

renowned quizmaster, Mr Carlyl McFarland. Questionswere based on general knowledge, science, mathematics,literature etc, which were answered by the contestantswith lightning speed. In the Eureka Reportage contest,the juniors participated with great eagerness. Each teamhad 2 students and they had to prepare a report on theactivities at Eureka. Then they had to present this reportas a broadcast in an eloquent and powerful voice.Renowned educationists and experts judged the various

events. Eureka 2006 concluded on 27 November with agrand prize distribution and closing ceremony organizedat the venue at which the Chief Guest, Shri GovindPant Raju, Bureau Chief, Aajtak honoured and gaveaway the prizes to the winners.
