Best Regards,

Manny Martinez, ISA OC President, 2014-2015, www.isaoc.org

Greetings to all of the Southern California automation professionals. On this month Ihave a few administrative announcements to make regarding the Section’s meeting location, leadership opportunities for members and the schedule of AutomationOC.

New Meeting LocationISAOC will have a new meeting site for our monthly presentations starting June 10,

2015. The monthly meetings held every 2nd Wednesday will now take place in EmersonProcess Management’s office at 2400 Barranca Pkwy, Irvine, CA, 92606. Please come joinsus in June to learn....

I would like to thank the fine folks at Omega Engineering for hosting the Section’smonthly presentations for the past 2 years. Omega is a great example of a true supporter of thelocal ISA Section and its members. Special thanks go to Blanca Wallace for always welcomingus with a smile.

Leadership OpportunitiesThe new fiscal year begins in July and the Section is looking for volunteers to serve in the Board. This is an

excellent opportunity for members to hon their leadership skills in a professional setting. Please let us know if you areinterested and we will discuss with you the open opportunities.

AutomationOCAfter listening to the local membership and automation exhibitors, the ISAOC Board has agreed to make changes

to the schedule of our table top show, AutomationOC. The show will now be held every two years instead of having itannually. The next show will be held on November 1, 2016. The intent for this significant change is to increase thesuccess by allowing more time between shows for better planning. The campaign for the 2016 show will begin earlyin Q1 2016. Please continue to provide your support to this local event.

ISA OC tours LA Joint Water Pollution Control Plant On May 13, 2015, theLos Angeles SanitationDistrict’s Joint Water PollutionControl Plant (JWPCP) is oneof the largest wastewatertreatment plants in the worldand is the largest of the LACounty Sanitation District’swastewater treatment plants. The facility provides bothprimary and secondarytreatment for approximately280 million gallons ofwastewater per day (mgd), and

has a total permitted capacity of 400 mgd. The tour focused primarily on the Total Energy Facility (TEF) which is theonsite co-generation plant with a walking tour of the TEF Control Room, Gas Turbine Building, the HRSG’s, theSteam Turbine Building, and the Fuel Gas Compression Building. Instrumentation 2015 Expo

Extensive Wireless Networking Integration DemonstrationAll exhibiting companies invited to connect their equipment

On July 21, the Instrumentation Expoexhibit hall at the Carson Center will betransformed into an industrial wirelessnetwork with gateways set up andoperated allowing various protocols

from each device ondisplay to communicate tofunctioning SCADA software.

Process technology supplierswill be integrating their equipment into acollaborative inter-operable wireless systemthat will be viewed by those present on acomputer or over a web browser. The systemincludes wireless capabilities, SCADAmonitoring and control software and

networking equipment.By using the make and model of equipment to be

included in the system, the status of each device willbe displayed in the exhibit hall over the network.

Through software protocol drivers and tags, information from all types of equipment at exhibitors’tables will be displayed using SCADA software on aPC. The software on the PC will be published to the Local

Area Network for browsing through a webbrowser.

Switches, router and wirelessnetworking equipment will beprovided by Lisa Hackett of Industrial

Enet. SCADA software, a PC, serial toEthernet device servers and gateways for

communication to devices will beprovided by Maria Lemone of ICP

DAS USA. Exhibitors will provide sensors andconnect via Wi-Fi data acquisition equipment.

Exhibiting companies interested in having theirproducts connected and demonstrated via this uniquewireless integration network please contact John

Prince at (714) 478-8816 [email protected]

Instrumentation 2015 Expo Training & Careers

By Gerald Herder, ISA Los AngelesLiaison to Cal Poly Student Section

At Instrumentation 2015 on July 21, thisPLC/Control Lab Water Circulation System willbe demonstrated by the students who designedand built it.

The presentation and demonstration will beof special interest to those interested in thepractical application of PLC’s and thoseconsidering a caereer in a technology career.

The objective of the project was todemonstrate a solution to the real life challenge

of consistent water storage and pressurized water to a populated area usingindustrial type equipment. The challenge of providing consistent water andwater pressure is often overlooked despite society’s heavy dependence onwater. The demand for water varies throughout the day, peaking early in themorning when sprinklers turn on and people begin showering and again inthe evening when many people arrive home from work.. Public waterSCADA systems must adjust rapidly, pumping water at varying rates toensure appropriate pressure.

Water pressure at the faucet is most often generated by the differencein elevation between the water reservoir and faucet. The reservoir is filled

by water pumped in from groundwater orother water sources. The SCADA sys-tem must detect a change in demand forwater and adjust accordingly or the res- er-voir may overflow or go empty.

This project seeks to address thisproblem and provide valuable real-time andhistorical telemetry through an industry-grade SCADA system. Key Hardware andSoftware Elements: Allen-Bradley Micrologix PLC’s and Ignition Softwareby Inductive Automation. As built the project can be controlled manually, byhigh-low level control or by continuous PID control of a pump system, keysystem variables such as set points and limits can be viewed and controlledthrough a wireless link to ones tablet computer.

Gerald Herder has been Chair of the Engineering TechnologyDepartment at Cal Poly Pomona since 1998 and maintains a continuousinterest in Industrial Control, Power Systems and Programmable LogicControllers. Prof Herder has BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineer-ing and Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, and has worked for SouthernCalifornia Edison (SCE) as a Telecommunications Engineer. ProfessorHerder has also been involved in the Instrumentation, Simulation andControl Laboratory sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
