Quantum Sails J24 National Championships

2017Cronulla Sailing Club

Cronulla Sailing Club was formed in 1963 from the amalgamation of Cronulla VS Sailing Club and the Port Hacking VJ Amateur Sailing Club. Since those days, the 'cubby house' has grown to what it is today – a thriving sailing club catering for offshore, inshore and dinghy fleets, as well as Sailability.

Twilight sailing also happens over the daylight savings period. CSC prides itself on being a totally volunteer run club (well, we do pay our bar staff....). All our facilities/buildings have been achieved through voluntary labour and expertise. One of the few west facing sailing clubs in Sydney, the aspect and views are unmatchable. Cronulla Sailing Club features:

Strong dinghy classes – Bics, Lasers, NS14s, MGs, 49ers (Yeah, we've got a few national and state champs in there!!!!!)

Inshore – J24s, Etchells, Hoods, Endeavours, Rls.Offshore – many Sydney to Hobart competitors, along with Sydney to Gold Coast, Port Stephens Regatta, Hamilton Island. Famous faces – our 2016 paralympian gold medallist, Jonathon Harris (Jon will be volunteering at the J24 Nationals).

2013 Melbourne to Osaka 2 handed winner, Wasabi (Bruce McKay).Nev Wittey of Etchell and Olympic fame. Also International Judge, and heading up the protest committee for J24 nationals.Ian Short (multiple J24 titles).

2016 (and other) National Jubilee champ, Stephen Wright (sailing Renaissance in the J24 nationals).

1969/70 and 1970/71 World Moth Champion and Australian Yachtsman of the year, numerous 16 (and 18) foot skiff Australian title holder, Dave McKay (sailing Stockcar in the J24 nationals). CSC's enviable financial position is achieved through our 'Famous Fridays', a stand out social event every Friday over the daylight savings period. This allows us to promote and support all levels of sailing. We at CSC are very proud to be hosting the J24 National Titles and hope that all competitors enjoy their time here. Welcome!

Cronulla Sailing Club

Dave McLachlan, Cronulla Sailing Club’s unassuming Principle Race Officer has been responsible for running the club’s racing for over 25 years and is well respected by his peers and the competitors sailing in his care. His race management includes many States and Nationals dinghy and keelboat One Design classes - so you can expect to have a well run regatta on the water.

Jon Harris is a Cronulla Sailing Club member and a member of the Australian Paralympic Team representing us in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games in the Mixed Three Person Sonar class and winning the gold medal. Jon will be our special guest of honour at the prize giving.

Thank you

The Australian National J24 Association and the NSW J24 State Association appreciates the efforts of the many class and Cronulla Sailing Club volunteers that have put so much effort into organising and running our 2017 National Championship. Thank you to our sponsors for your generosity and support. We thank you all for your energy, dedication and effort.

Regatta Schedule

Quantum Sails J24 National Championships

IN THE MOOD - AUS1314 BBYC

In the Mood is sailed out of Botany Bay, Sydney. AusSea Sailing School has owned In the Mood for four years and competes in NSW and National Regattas with a different crew each time. The goal is to give as many students the opportunity to experience class racing in J24 and Melges 24.

The crew for the 2017 Nationals is Marc van Dinther (helm), Scott Hewison (trim), Sonja Hewison (pit), Alexander Smeaton (mast) and Joeanne Katsikaros (bow).

McKAY MARINE - AUS1317 CSC

Mouse is back with a mishmash of Great Lakes and Cronulla crew.

Usually Laser sailors, they have sailed competitively in Cherubs and 16 foot skiffs. Julie Castle would like to be known for her skills rather than her parentage. (Says she’s going to beat him this time.)

Nationals Crew:

Commodore of GLSC, Bill Stokes (flying dutchman, J24s, Lasers) and local availability.

KICKING - AUS1324 SYC

Formerly known as KICKING BOTTOM and regarded as the fastest green Jarkan J24 in Australia, KICKING has been rebranded and is now white as a result of being caught starting early too many times. Sailing from Sandringham Yacht club, KICKING has travelled to Adelaide, Sydney Harbour and now Cronulla participating in every State and National Championships in the past few years always enjoying each regatta and continues to keep the Bashford built boats honest.

Current holder of the THOMO cup, a fiercely fought and treasured trophy, KICKING is ready to tackle the Cronulla swell and tides.

Owner and skipper is Ron Thomson originally from Manly yacht club in Sydney but now based in Melbourne and current National J24 President – please bow.

The carefully selected crew are:

Daniel Abbas An extraordinary trimmerCaroline Short A seasoned Tasmanian sailor Janet Dean Current past Commodore of RMYS Maria Vasardani A welcome addition to the crew for the Nationals

SEAS THE JAY - AUS1635 RMYC & CSC

Seas The Jay is owned by Jared Macquart and Alex Naylor, it is raced out of both the RMYC and CSC, in Wednesday twilights, Saturday Inshore, and the Sunday Bate Bay series.

Seas The Jay crew for the Nationals consists of a fairly young crew from Cronulla Sailing Club :Jared Macquart - Skipper / PitJacob Broom - Steerer / Tactician / PitCooper Ellis - TrimmerJohn Spencer - Bowman / Mastman

The boat and crew are proudly sponsored by Newton Real Estate and Grandview Interiors.

RENAISSANCE - AUS1636 CSC

Steve Wright and Karyn Grover bought the former “Excite Your Senses” from Michael Lewenhagen at Sandringham 18 months ago.Sailing at Cronulla again after many years absence has been a “renaissance” for Karyn and Steve who sailed together on a NS14 a long time ago, also for regular crew Jonathan Wright and his wife Frances who sailed a J at Sandy some years ago. Steve and Karyn are also current Australian and Victorian Jubilee Champions and the whole crew has had success at various levels of dinghy, yacht and offshore racing. It’s great to be back on the water with some “old friends” from Cronulla. Crew for the Nationals :

Steve Wright (skipper); Karyn Grover (trim); Scott Birdsall (pit) (has sailed Sydney Hobart Race and all the east coast offshore races plus won dinghy titles); Clem Birdsall (mast) (some Club sailing but keen as mustard & learning fast !); Ian Goodbury (bow) (very experienced dinghy and offshore sailor, won V.S. and Magic 25 series also with Scott) proudly sponsored by Newton Real Estate and Grandview Interiors.

JARGON - AUS1642 CSC

Jargon (AUS1642) was purchased accidentally by Tony Landers during a moment of weakness one mid-summer Friday afternoon in 2011 whilst he was enjoying a beer and a sunset on the deck of Cronulla Sailing Club.

She has been campaigned fiercely every Friday night since, by an elite band of ex Kirrawee High students and 1980's VJ, Cherub and Skiff wannabe's. She is crewed (ir)regularly by Greg Cato, Brent Daly, Brad Duggan, Richard Searle, Jeremy Searle and anyone else that arrives at the wharf around 5:45 pm armed with a six pack.

After an initial burst of Saturday series, she has settled in to the occasional club race and guest appearance at Short Course and other regattas.

Nationals Crew:Tony Landers, Brian McCarthy (all the way from Brisbane) and others to be announced closer to the event

NO EYE DEER (N.E.D) - AUS4424 CYCSA

N.E.D is one of Jim Townsend's J24s and sailed by son Andrew out of the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia (CYCSA). N.E.D was well known when sailed by top yachtie Trevor Conyers. N.E.D's name is on most winnable silverware at the CYCSA.

N.E.D has had some TLC and thanks to the kind donation/loan of some good racing sales to the association and the selfless facilitation of Cookie Monsters Rob Hogan will have competitive sails for the Cronulla series.

This Year NED has been racing in Div 2 at the CYCSA, winning the winter series (PHS) as the crew settled in.

Nationals Crew is :Andrew Townsend (helm), Daniel Miller (trimmer), Andrew Dickson (tactician/pit), Brooke Kilowsky (mast) Juliet Crompton (bow).

The crew of N.E.D are hoping to continue improving and aspire to one day sail in World Championships to continue their J24 journey.

PINOT - AUS4430 CSC

Pinot sails out of Cronulla Sailing club’

The boat was owned by John Terry from the Middle Harbour Yacht club. I purchased Pinot about three years ago and have sailed in two state titles and three Cronulla short courses regattas.

I will be sailing a mixed crew from Botany Bay Yacht Club, Sandringham Yacht Club and Cronulla.

Helm and owner Barry Ryan

Tactition Grant Mackellar

Trim - Warren Campbell

Mast - Chrissy Neaves

Bow Jon Holst

STOCKCAR - AUS4433 CSC

Dave McKay is back again with Ian Short after a hiatus of 20 years.

The pair of them have been involved with J24s for many years including World Championships in Isle of Capri and Poole, England. Magoo (McKay) was the agent for distributing J24s for Kanga Burtles.

Crew for the Nationals:

Dave and Ian are back with crew: Spike (Stephen Jones) – foredecky with Magoo since he was 12 years old, Gary Vaughn and Ed the lightweight (with 2 world titles in J24s).

The pic above !!!!

That’s Dave and the crew at the states - sailing at their best !!Think they’ve forgotten more than they’ve learned

VERTIGO - AUS4436 CSC

Vertigo is a fun club boat that probably has an illustrious history. It’s now known for it’s footprints up the bow representing the Jaguars that race it.

Owned by the gorgeous Clinton Hood.

Driven by the Dog – Dean Bowness.

Crew for the Nationals is:

Our 11 year old MG sailor Jenna Searle, Mr Quantum - Matt Pearce, Jaguars Rhonda Wodzinski and Fiona Campbell

WAVECUTTER II - AUS4439 CSC

Like everyone my age sailed VJ's in the 50's - Hobie's in the 70'sDragged Andrew Short to the Spit, Sydney, to help me buy a Sonata and bought the Demo J, A Jarkan KA85 Hull 1634 "Wavecutter". Ian Short sailed with me and we did all the J Regattas from Pittwater to Cronulla. Some of the regular competitors then were, Ann Finlay, Bob Hagan, Ian Bashford, Bob Ross & Bob Wilson (President)

Did the J Worlds at Atsumi Bay Japan in 1985 & Italy, Isle of Capri, couple of years later with Ian Short & Dave McKay (least said). Ian, Andrew & Peta Short later won two J Nationals in "Short Circuit”

Sold KA85 in 1997 and sailed a Nacra 14square at Kurnell Cat Club.

2006 bought KA 146 in Melbourne, it has been Cappuccino Club and Sunday Sailor - and now Wavecutter II.Due to rowing commitments with St George RC we enjoy sailing inshore at Cronulla SC when not at rowing Regatta's. So to misquote some general "old J sailors never die they just sail into the Sunset".

Nationals crew is Graeme Thorburn, Peter Merritt, Bill Dixon and Tim O'Rourke

Editors note:Graeme has been a great J supporter and now 77 years oldhas contributed much to the class and done what most of us only dream of.

GUNBOAT - AUS4457 SYC

Gunboat is owned by Bruce Alexander and sailed out of Sandringham Yacht Club. The boat was previously Amazing Grace out of SA.

Usually we are in the middle of the fleet somewhere. We've never won a j24 race but did win the SYC Winter Handicap Aggregate Series last year against 40 bigger keelboats in a heavy weather series.

Nationals Crew is:

Daniel, Donal, Lucienne, Nami and Bruce. Donal and Lucy from Meetup. Nami is girlfriend. Daniel is friend of a friend with no sailing experience and chucked in the deep end foredeck. Most crew have only a little sailing experience.

Editors note :Bruce has brought an amazing number of new and keen sailors into the club and class at Sandy through his Meetup Melbourne Sailing Club. His enthusiasm for sailing and life is infectious.

TWO DOGS - AUS4464 SYC

Two Dogs currently sails out of SYC in Melbourne and is owned by Jack Fullerton. Purchased in April 2016, after two years sailing the Victorian J24 association youth J, Jack and the crew are on the road to mastering the new boat. The Two Dogs team are undertaking their first national championship in 2017.

Two Dogs has undergone several name changes (Argo and Fly Away Jay) since 1995 however has been restored to her former glory and renamed to the name she was first christened with.

The crew for nationals is: Jack Fullerton, Tony Moore, Megan Aulich, Karl Smith and Ramzey El Hila

KAOTIC - AUS4770 MYC

Kaotic sails out of Manly Yacht Club in Sydney and has been owned by Arthur Crothers since 1997.

Kaotic won the 2013 Nationals at Sandringham Yacht Club and was placed second at both the 2012 and 2014 Nationals by the narrowest of margins.

Since 2001 Kaotic has won four NSW State Titles and was runner up on a further five occasions. To avenge the narrow defeat in the 2012 Nationals Kaotic returned to Sandringham to win the 2012 Victorian State Titles.

Kaotic won the J24 Division in the first Sydney Harbour Regatta in 2006 and competed against other Division winners at Oran Park Raceway in a drive off to win an Audi car - unfortunately the crew are better sailors than rally drivers !

The crew for the Nationals at Cronulla is:Shane Guanaria - helm, Tom Barker - trim, Kirby O'Brien - pit, Arthur Crothers - mast, Wulf Wilkins - bow

CONVICTS REVENGE - AUS4771 CYCA

I bought this boat from its second owner over 20 years ago . Many have sailed on her over the years I often meet people who remind me if some fun sailing we did together back in the day which I have since forgotten.

Regulars include Angus Ray Pearson, Andrea Gambacorti,McKechnie, Neil Wild, Chris Goggin, Jan Talacko and Andy Heenan.

For the Nationals its Angus, Ray, Andy and relatively new recruit Angus Hislop who we rescued from over the side on several occasions in the recent racing at Cronulla

Editors note :Steve is typically coy on his exploits and achievements,a multiple regatta winner, States, including the 2016 at Cronulla, 3 Nationals wins and many more I can’t name. He’s the guy you see near the back of the pack once in a while and think I can’t be doing so bad, but then you notice him standing on the podium. A wily ‘young’ fox - I am not allowed to say ‘old’.

WITCH'S THIMBLE - AUS4790 CYCSA

Witch's Thimble is the 2nd J24 owned and raced by Robin and Jim Townsend from the CYCSA. The boat was previously SDM owned by Adam Evans and sailed out of Sandringham YC.

Robin was keen to return to one-design racing after 10 years of racing on a Division 1 boat.

Robin will helm for the 2017 Nationals with Jim Townsend, Veronica and Stuart De Poi and Crispin Painter as crew.

Editors note:Robin and Jim are one of the class’s keenest supporters and love a road trip, they have probably travelled more kms than anyone in the last 10 years following the regatta scene. Jim is currently the SA Class President.

TEAM CINI O’BRYAN - AUS4791 CSC

Bruce and Steve, well we've have been sailing tooo long.

The younguns, Justin, Nicola and Lauren grew up in Dinghies, Sabots, 420s and 29ers.

Other interests including work and university lately restrict their sailing and though they know education is important .... sailing is “importanter”

Crew for the nationals :

Steve O’Rourke - steering stick..Bruce Swayne - mast..Nicola Cini - pit..Lauren Cini - trim..Justin O’Bryan - bow..

Editors note:Steve has been a keen Etchell sailor but is now 75 years old and really enjoying sailing with his grandson and fiance on the J. The ‘Team’ have become keen regatta travellers in the class.

JET - AUS4792 SYC

‘Jet’ sails out of Sandringham YC in Melbourne and is owned by Simon Grain and Lisa Simonov. We have owned the boat for the last couple of years after buying it from Herschel Landes and Dave Suda - it was previously the well known first ‘Pacemaker’.

Recent results are :SYC 2016 Winter series - 1stNSW 2016 States - 4th2016 Nationals - 3rd2015 Nationals - 4th (Code Violation)

Jet is sailing with the same crew as last year, a mixture of Sandy crew and a couple of well travelled yachties from the other side of the country and the world.

Crew for the Nationals is:

Simon Grain - helm, Ken Harnett (Perth) - trim, Joe Pearson - pit, Madeline Linton - mast, Kenny Roebuck (UK) - bow.

Normal crew also includes Lisa Simonov and Leigh McCleod.

INNAMINCKA - AUS4793 MHYC

Innamincka is owned by John Crawford since 1997.Sailed out of Middle Harbour Yacht Club, it has won seven club championships. With Gary Gietz helming won 1997 States and 1998 Nationals and 4th in1994 Melbourne Worlds.

Crew for the Nationals:

John Crawford helm, Dale Sharp trim, FI Alcock pitt, Mat Crawford mast, Neale Adams bow

By The Lee has had mixed success in previous State and National Championships with highlights coming in the 2011 Victorian State Championships (4th), 2014 Victorian Championships (3rd), 2014 National Championships (4th), 2015 National Championships (3rd) and 2016 National Championships (4th).

By the Lee participates in all Sunday races both Winter and Summer and since 2011 has finished 2nd on 5 occasions in the overall Summer Series and 1st on 4 occasions in the overall Winter Series.

The team plans to compete in the 2018 J24 Worlds in Italy.

Crew for the Nationals are:

Brendan Lee - helmLuke Stocker - TrimmerEric Plancon - TrimmerBec Neville - MastTrent Adamson - Bow

ACE - AUS4801 MHYC

ACE sails out of Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Sydney near 'Wyargine' Point which is Aboriginal for “Club crane not high enough for J24s” and is owned by Dave West, Andy Lim and Dave Mandelberg.

Purchased from former Association president Paul Charlton for the Melbourne Worlds in 2006, Ace has had some good regatta results over the years, including being 5 times winner of the Sydney Harbour Regatta in J24 class.

In 2011, Ace was 4th in the Australian championships and then followed up with a legendary trip to Argentina for the Worlds of that year (most legendary for the partying and less so for the race results). Famously, the boat returned to shore for lunch and a few beers while the World's postponed flag was up and made it back in fine time to start the next race, fully refuelled and ready to go, while all other competitors sweltered in zero breeze on the La Plata river for 3 hours. With a new set of Quantum sails and an experienced, nationally sourced crew, Ace is all set for a strong performance in the Australian Championships.

Team for the Nationals will be: David West – helm, David “Spike” Field – Trim, Doug “El Fidelo” Watson – Strings, Grant “The Rock” Woodorth - Pit, Leigh “Walks on Water” McLeod – Bow.

Our regular crew includes Andy Lim but otherwise they are unfortunately very irregular.one day sail in World Championships to continue their J24 journey.

WILDFIRE - AUS5058 MYC

Ownered by Robert Richardson and Janette Syme.

We purchased our lovely boat Wildfire from Brett Hudson approx 18 months ago after trialling every other boat in the J fleet and Magoo Mackay snuck in and got Stockar before us - its the quick or the dead around here! Have competed in all regattas since and find that we sail better on our ear!

Always in pursuit of the elusive and exclusive Thomo Cup (between me and brother Ron Thomo ) Have a lot of fun trying! Have had moments of brilliance but my memory escapes me of the last one!

We will be racing the 2017 nationals with a fabulous crew. Rob trimming, Matt on foredeck, Jo in the pit . Andrew at the mast and Janette on the Helm.

Looking forward to it !

SAILPAC - AUS5085 CYCA

Sailpac is owned by Terry Wise and is part of his Pacific Sailing School fleet of Js in Rushcutters Bay, Sydney. Sean Kirkjian needs very little introduction as one of the country’s top helmsmen and is a multiple Nationals winner, runner up and podium finisher, often with student crews. He is also a Sydney Hobart winner along with many other ocean races.

Crew for the Nationals is :

At the helm (and still in training) - Sean KirkjianVeteran J24 sailor Tony ReynoldsWith graduates of PSS Gosford and the NSW State Championships, Andrew Halliday, Richard Thompson and Mathew Mitchell.

Editors note :Terry Wise has been a long time J24 owner and sailor and with his Pacific Sailing School has brought many young - and older people into sailing Js across Australia. He takes great pleasure in taking students who have never sailed to accomplished sailors within 6 months, mixing it up at the front end of the pack.

CRACKERJACK - AUS5086 SYC

Sailed from Sandringham Yacht Club. Owned and helmed by Doug MacGregor since 2008. One of the last Bashford boats ever built and is in near mint condition. The Crackerjack crew have invested in training and some very valuable coaching session with Michah Shuwalow, club coach at Sandringham. The winter season and the Sprint Sprints have seen the time spent on the water translate into some very solid if mercurial results.
