Quarries Opt In Group
GCA P&E provide specialist Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Education interventions which correspond with the experiences and outcomes contained in the Health and Well Being Organiser as
part of A Curriculum for Excellence (first stage – fourth stage. In relation to Alcohol and Drug interventions GCA P&E takes a whole school approach. Our practice is coherent with the school’s curriculum and teaching ethos and the interventions and inputs we provide are evidenced based in
terms of methods and approaches. Our interventions in schools are planned in partnership with local and city wide stakeholders and school health coordinators to ensure links to curricular learning. The school programme has a
progressive and planned approach providing a consistent age appropriate delivery, with an input for each year to ensure consolidation of past learning and to support young people as they move on
from primary to secondary education. Research shows that children as young as seven understand about alcohol and its effects, from this
age children can recognize drunkenness and addiction and can tell the difference between acceptable and unacceptable drinking behaviour.

SUMMARY Quarriers Opt In programme work with pupils from Primary 6 to S1, helping them to deal with a range of issues including difficulties with behaviour, attendance, social skills, peer relationships, coping with loss and confidence issues. The service is particularly focused on supporting pupils through the difficult transition from primary to secondary school. We deliver support in schools during term time and offer a series of transition support programmes during the summer holidays. The service also provides individual support to pupils in secondary schools and works alongside families to address their child’s difficulties. We agreed to work in partnership with Quarriers to deliver one off interventions over the summer as part of the larger programme with the aim to use a fun and active approach to explore alcohol myths and facts, and increase understanding of the negative consequences of drinking alcohol. The target group was Primary 7 pupils who had been referred to the ‘Opt In’ programme through pastoral care, teaching staff, school joint support teams, and educational psychology staff. As this was a SW Programme – the majority of the children have had Young Booze Busters so this was a great way of reinforcing their learning in a fun and active session. We also discussed with the young people that throughout Secondary school the GCA P & E Teams would deliver a programme of interventions from S1 to S6 exploring alcohol, drugs and resilience to promote positive choices. All activities have an active element and the session is delivered in a large hall using cones, balls, bibs and other sports equipment and include; Alcohol Tunnel Tig, Icebreaker, Leggy Ball (with alcohol effects on the body), Myths and Facts ladders (questions about alcohol myths and facts) Sinking Ship (consequences of drinking alcohol) and Beer Goggle Challenge. Evaluation has to be flexible due to the nature of the group thus we ask simplified, age appropriate questions.
