Also in attendance was VVilburWilde and his Trio who provided live music for twoand a half hours, Wilbur was certainly the inari forthe job as he attracted and entertained a large au-dience, and promoted the Archive exceptionallywell, along with our own volunteers who took theopportunity to hand out leaflets and answer ques-tions

A very good friend of the Archive, Bill Coombs ofW. & D. Coombs, was concerned to see six vol-unteers toiling away in the print room on a hotsummer's day with only a ceiling fan. When wesaid we had run out of funds for air conditioninghe offered to supply and install air conditioningimmediately and we could pay him back when wehad enough funding. This was accepted withgreat pleasure and now the boys in the backroom are enjoying much better working condi-tions. As Bill has fitted all the air conditioners at

the Archive plus the Kennedy and Warilisshomes, we thoroughly recommend his work. Hecan be contacted on 9758 1133. Many thanks Bill& Dawn

The Archive brought and displayed some historicinstruments including Ade's white plastic sax andvalve trombone and Bob Barnard's silver comet

and these were used in a number of photo shoots.

Starbucks Coffee Company offered to donate tothe Archive $1 for each cup of coffee sold on theday and we were very pleased to receive a doria-tion of $1,000

Many members may riot be aware of the possibilitiesoffered by the Archive for research into many aspects ofAustralian jazz music. As the Archive Collection expandsthere are countless opportunities for detailed andinteresting research to be carried out. Recent positiveresearch work has been requested by members and mediaoutlets, mainly by an initial phone call and subsequent co-operation with the Collection Management Team, who canprovide information on everything from recordings, photographs to posters and memorabilia.

Discographical information is the most common request, and with many of the Collection Team being versed indiscography, it is possible to answer most requests. Thegreatest challenge has been to provide discographicaldetails for the several VJAZZ CD releases produced "inhouse". VJAZZ003 which featured the C Ian Turner "JellyRoll" label acetate recordings, has been the biggestchallenge, causing a deal of speculation on the personnel

Recent correspondence with Jackand date details

Mitchell, author of the three "Australian Jazz on Record"discographies, and with Mike Sutcliffe from Sydney, editorof the Australian Music and Record Review, has caused arethink to some personnel and dates on that CD.

The largest projed has been the final is ing of Jack Ricketts'"Ade Monsbourgh Discography', to get it ready for printingin the next few months. There has been a deal of

uncertainty surrounding the discographical details of theearly (, 939 - I 943) recently donated acetates coining intothe Collection from Roger Bell's and Bill Haesler's acetatecollections. Many hours of work were entailed, with thefinal decisions still somewhat in the air. We do feel

however that the information will be as close to completeas possible. It must be pointed out we are dealing withrecordings made over 60 years ago, with minimal label anddiscographical inforrnation available.

Amongst research options made available to students andthe media, has been for the recent work of Emilie Collyer, aSwinbume post graduate student "Not In It For The Money:An Overview of the Support And Promotion Of MelbourneJazz From The I 920's To The Present Day". Emilie spentsome considerable time at the Archive consultingmagazines and books from the Library collection, andinterviewing the volunteers working at the Archive We

appreciated her comment in the paper. Quote "Thesepeople are vital in taking jazz out to the public, so it can beheard, appreciated, and taken up as part of societyscultural fabric. At the other end of the scale, volunteerswho work preserving history for no financial reward are vitalas well. Without documentation of a past, the futurepromotion of jazz would have little context or meaning".

Use of the research options available in the Library havebeen taken up by Don Hopgood of Adelaide, who has beenresearching the Adelaide Jazz Lovers Society history; JexSaarelaht, local musician, seeking information on Americanpianist Herbie Nichols; National Gallery of Victoria lookingfor and being supplied a jazz soundtrack representing the1950's in Melbourne for the "Swish - Fashions in

Melbourne in the 1950's" exhibition at Federation SquareThe Archive has been providing information to MikeSutcliffe for his "Visitors To Australia" musical columns in

RESEARCH his own magazine 'Australian Record & Music Review', thework he does for overseas magazines. We have alsosupplied photographs to be used by the VJC in "Jazzline".

John Nixon, author of the book "Down beat - MelbourneTrad Jazz Of The Early 1960"s" used the resources of theArchive to find photographs and programmes used in theproduction of the book, which has been published by theArchive and is available in our Shop

Another aspect of research is the Australian JazzInterviews Project tapes under the supervision of OralHistorian Torn Wariliss, now numbering over 90 interviewswith mainly Victorian jazz musicians and identities. Dr TimStevens used many of these interviews when compiling hisMasters thesis 'The Origins, Development and Significanceof the Red Onions Jazz Band - 1960 to 1996"

Constant research is needed to assist the Collection Team

in identifying recordings and especially photographs, andthe history behind them, as these objects are donated tothe Collection. Remember, the team at the Archive is thereto help you if you have any research projects or evensimple enquirles.

VALE - ROY PRESTON 19.4-2003

Many readers would riot know of Roy Preston, aremarkable inari, equally interested in organ music, classical and jazz music. Roy was a founding member ofthe Theatre Organ Society, and with other members wasresponsible for the dismantling of the mighty Wurlitzer PipeOrgan from the Capitol Theatre and its relocation at theDendy Theatre Brighton.

It is through his love of all forms of jazz music that I initiallygot to know Roy back in 1947. We were both members ofthe Melbourne Rhythm Society located in Richmond. Hewas the Editor of the MRS club newsletter "RhythmReview' whilst I was the record reviewer and the club's

publicity inari, something I had completely forgotten aboutuntil he recently gave me his MRS files, containing articles, letters and copies of "Rhythm Review'.

Roy was an excellent sound recordist, his studio being athis home in North Fitzroy, and he recorded anything fromradio broadcasts that took his fancy, especially SaturdayNight Swing Sessions and Eijis Blain's programs. One ofthese broadcasts was the basis for the recent release of

the Sid Bromley "Cane Cutters" CD

The 16-inch double-sided acetate discs he cut, numberover I 500. These he left to Maurice Austin, a friend andconfidant of many years, especially during Roy's latteryears in a retirement home. Maurice gave the eulogy atRoy's funeral on Monday 5 January 2004, a copy of whichis lodged in the Archive along with Roys MRS files.
