WE LAUNCH into spring with a wonderful exhibition featuring four talented and complementary artists in Quartet. Their individual style is distinct and well defined. Vanessa Bowman and Marilyn Browning concentrate on the domestic with arrangements of flowers, fruit and tableware. Both paint in a naive, simplistic fashion, but in different ways.
Vanessa’s eye for colour and pattern means that everyday items are elevated to something charming and wonderful through her carefully composed still lifes. While her landscapes observe the features and architecture of the countryside around her Dorset home. Similarly Marilyn Browning is inspired by her surroundings. She draws our focus to the subject, whether it be a vase of daffodils or ripening fruit, using texture and colour to distinguish from empty, muted backdrops. These are quiet, delicate paintings, yet they contain an inner strength and confidence.
The same could be said of Wendy McBride’s landscapes. Using pastel, she creates atmospheric, light-filled paintings inspired by the southwest. There’s an ethereal beauty to her work, allowing the viewer room for interpretation. Again, like Marilyn, Wendy came late to painting, only training formally after her children had flown the nest.
Duibhne Gough’s jewellery has beauty in its simplicity. Semi precious stones, silver and occasional highlights of gold are combined in organic shapes with a primitive aesthetic, very much in the modern Cornish tradition.
