Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship In support of the Inclusive Innovation collaboration between the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business and the University of Toronto Internship Outline 2016 Introduction The University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business and the University of Toronto are involved in an exciting collaboration to build a network of student leaders trained in inclusive innovation to work together to address the challenges of low-income communities, and how to promote innovative and workable solutions. As part of this collaboration, we have a selection of students from the Munk School of Global Affairs in Toronto coming out to South Africa this year to conduct a 12-16 week internship with host organisations. Overview of Internship Opportunity Organisation: TRADE-MARK TRADE-MARK is a non-profit social enterprise that connects tradesmen from the townships with homeowners and businesses wanting to undertake renovations or maintenance. Trade-Mark as an online platform serves a two- sided market. The one side of the market is the tradesmen from the townships, who are also beneficiaries of our work. We market their service under the TRADE-MARK brand and provide business and life skills training support, enabling them to grow successful businesses and improve their standard of living. The other side of the market is the client wanting to renovate their home or office. Introduction

The University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business and the University of Toronto are involved in an exciting collaboration to build a network of student leaders trained in inclusive innovation to work together to address the challenges of low-income communities, and how to promote innovative and workable solutions.

Outline of Internship Project

To become more effective in our work we need to better understand both sides of the market, as well as to better understand our competitors in the renovation industry. The TRADE-MARK team is looking for one intern to undertake initial research to conduct a thorough market and competitor analysis.

The intern(s) will be required to:

1. Work with our team to research and outline the client side of the market;2. Research and outline the tradesman side of the market;3. Research and outline the competitive landscape in the renovation industry focusing

on South Africa and Cape Town more specifically, but we would also require an outline of similar models operating in other countries.

The intern(s) will be primarily based at the MTN Solution Space at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business in order to benefit from previous research and work focused on competitor and market analysis.

How does the completion of the internship assist the organization?

The intern will assist TRADE-MARK in making significant steps towards achieving our social mission.

Specifically the internship will assist us with the following:

Added value of a thorough market and competitor analysis and a better understanding of both sides of the market.

What skills might the intern learn on the project?

What skills would the intern need to have, in order to undertake the project?

• Strong interpersonal skills, creativity and ability to mix with other people, particularly in an emerging market setting

• Resilience• Tolerance for ambiguity and change • Deep passion for inclusive innovation • High energy levels with a bias for action• Strong analytical thinking ability• Innovative, conceptual problem solver• Business analysis and assessment• Assessing and implementing systems• Market research and analysis• Management of information• Financial modeling (desirable)• Bachelors degree required

Duration of placement

The project is ideally 12-16 weeks duration, across May 2nd –September 2nd 2016.
