Dear Parish Family,

Every year, we make available for you our Financial Report: our income and balance sheet statements, along with a description of our financial activity during the most recently completed fiscal year. This year, we enriched the report with a deeper analysis of the numbers, along with a more expansive overview of our many activities and accomplishments.

Our theme for the 50th anniversary “Giving Thanks, Bearing Fruit” has become a reality. A year later we can rejoice with the abundant fruit that we

see all around: There is joyful involvement in our ministries, our parish-wide events are well attended, and there is more of a sense of becoming a parish family. We should take the time to reflect on how much we have grown!

For this, we offer our gratitude to God, to our Blessed Mother who inspires us, and to our generous parishioners, whose contributions to the parish are often unseen, except by God, “who is in secret” (Matthew 6:6).

In particular, I would like to recognize the members of our Pastoral and Finance Councils within this report, for their precious support and prudent advice throughout the year in these sensitive areas of parish management.

A Message from Fr. Leopoldo, continued

THE JULY 2014 - JUNE 2015 YEAR WAS AN EVENTFUL ONE FOR QUEEN OF APOSTLES.

It marked the second year of the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary (DCJM) being entrusted to manage the parish, with Fr.

Leopoldo serving as Pastor. The second year of his tenure marked a return to stability for a parish that had seen much turnover in recent years.

Fr. Leopoldo’s first full summer as Pastor saw much activity, from the hiring of a new Music Director and Director of Operations & Stewardship, to the completion of significant capital improvement projects, particularly in the school.

The Summer of 2014 also marked the conclusion of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the parish: A Golden Jubilee Gala Dinner was celebrated on August 16 and was attended by over 300 parishioners. The next day, our 50th Anniversary Mass was celebrated by Fr. Mark Mealey, Vicar General for the Diocese.

That same weekend, Fr. Leopoldo, through the guidance of a newly constituted Pastoral Council, introduced to the parish faithful new Vision, Mission and Values statements. Central to this document was the idea of a family of families: where each and every parishioner is known to be a member of a family; and, together, we form our parish family.

2014-15 AT QOFA

2014-15 Finance Council Members:

Mike Kirby (Finance Council Chair), Maurizio DiBenigno, Raul Fernandez, and John Glista

Our parishioners should rest assured that their needs and interests are being well represented by the members of these Councils.

I am also grateful for your openness to understand and embrace our new Vision, Mission and Values. I have seen this guiding document take root within many of our groups and ministries, and I see more of it every day. It brings me great joy to serve a parish community so desirous to take an active role in our “family” life!

While we reflect and give thanks, we must also continue to plan for the future, finding ways to become more intentional disciples and become better stewards of God’s gifts: time, talent and treasure. The more we grow, the more needs we will have, and so I ask you to

prayerfully reflect on the role that God is calling you to take within our parish life.

Our “home” is also an aging one, and so there is a great challenge before us to prepare to meet our facilities needs. As much as possible, we hope to be proactive about these needs, and not be caught by surprise.

The more we share our gifts the more we will grow and accomplish for the glory of God. I hope you will enjoy this report!

Sincerely in Christ,

QUEEN OF APOSTLES AT A GLANCE July 2014 - June 2015

Serving Our Family, At Home and Beyond

Through the over 45 ministries offered at our parish in 2014-15, parishioners of all interests,

abilities and ages were able to find a path to steward their time and talents at Queen of

Apostles. Read all about our many ministries at queenofapostles.org/ministry. Some

highlights from our ministries include:

Queen of Apostles hosts St. Martin De Porres Senior Center, Nov. 2014 - Jan. 2015. In

November of 2014, lightning struck Catholic Charities’ St. Martin De Porres (SMDP) Center,

causing a fire that would render the Center inoperable for many months. Its many

participants now without facilities, Catholic Charities reached out to Fr. Leopoldo to ask if

our parish might host the Center’s daily activities. Without hesitation, Fr. Leopoldo gave

Catholic Charities our “yes,” and two weeks later our Hannan Hall was hosting the SMDP participants Monday through

Friday. Parish groups using Hannan Hall rescheduled or relocated their programming—which they did happily—and

some parishioners even got involved with the SMDP services! The fire, while unfortunate, became a great opportunity for

our parish to show its hospitality and generosity to those most in need.

Nov. 24, 2014 Heads of Ministries Meeting unites parish leadership, inspires collaboration. The Monday before

Thanksgiving, 2014 became an opportunity for Fr. Leopoldo to extend his appreciation to the heads of ministries for all

they do to provide vital services to our parish and community. He affirmed their service to the parish as more than simply

coordination; that through their leadership, they are responding to God’s call to discipleship and stewardship. Following

this fruitful meeting, the first of its kind at Queen of Apostles, the heads of ministries collaborated to put together a

Ministries Booklet, which served to describe in great detail the activities and services of each parish ministry. An electronic

copy of this handbook, distributed in December of 2014, can be found at queenofapostles.org/?p=601.

St. Martin De Porres Senior Center in Hannan Hall

For Holy Week 2015, Fr. Juan led

a group of 11 youth from the

parish to travel to Rome. The

pilgrims had spent the Spring

raising funds for the trip, which became an unforgettable

experience for all who went. Said one of our pilgrims:

"Attending Palm Sunday Mass at St. Peter's Square was a spiritually moving experience because being with thousands and thousands of people from all around the world believing in the same faith is a moment that won't happen often and is truly special. It was special because it was the first time at the Vatican and seeing the Pope. The environment and atmosphere are things I won't experience often."

SHEPHERDING OUR PARISH FAMILY

One of the other fruits of the Disciples has

been the launch of the Stella Maris

Exchange Program, the first of its kind in

the Arlington Diocese. In its first year, 9

Queen of Apostles families hosted 11

students and teachers from the Stella Maris

School, a DCJM School outside of Madrid, Spain.

The students spent three weeks taking in American culture

and values, learning English from a team of volunteer

instructors led by QofA parishioner Margaret Peiffer, and

exploring the historical attractions of our Nation’s Capital.

The program follows a similarly modeled program out of St.

Mary’s Church in Littleton. Plans are already in the works to

host even more students next year, and to send a group of

our own youth parishioners to Spain. We hope you will

consider participating!

To inquire about the program, e-mail: [email protected].

Our Priests at a Glance

When the Disciples came to Queen of Apostles, they brought more than a tireless commitment to serving the parish: they

brought a vision of a family-oriented community, and they came with a track record of successful programs through their

time at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Littleton, Colorado.

Joining us in the Summer of 2014 was Fr. Juan Espino, the first U.S. vocation to the Disciples, and having been newly

ordained in 2013. Fr. Juan has been entrusted with the youth of the parish, including his chaplaincy of the school.

Fr. Ignacio de Ribera, In Residence at Queen of Apostles, and the order’s local superior, continues his professorship at the

Catholic University of America, where he teaches Aristotle, Philosophy of Nature and Life, and Metaphysics.

Since opening its doors in 1966, over

1,000 students have grown in faith

and knowledge through their

association with Queen of Apostles

School. In each of the past three

years, our school has increased

enrollment. The School and Parish

continue to work together to help

each student reach his or her academic and spiritual potential. The future of

Queen of Apostles School is promising as we strive to develop the many gifts

and opportunities of Catholic education. Highlights about our school include:

Fully accredited faculty, with the majority of teachers obtaining advanced

degrees

100% acceptance rate for 8th grade students entering into Catholic and

private high schools

Fully equipped science lab for hands-on learning for students in all grades

(K-8), plus Wi-Fi available throughout the facility

Current 5th grade student won 1st Place for the Library of Congress Essay

Contest for the Mid-Atlantic Region; same student was also an Art Contest

Winner, with the drawing on display at the National Shrine during Advent.

Each year QofA’s Math Team participates in the annual MathCounts

program, and has received recognition and awards

Multiple after-school clubs and sports, including the very popular robotics

club, chess club, math club, CYO tennis, basketball, and cheerleading

INVESTING IN OUR

SCHOOL, INVESTING

IN OUR STUDENTS

Fr. Leopoldo, through the guidance

and direction of the parish Finance

Council and Facilities Committee,

initiated a number of school capital

improvement projects during the

summer of 2014. These projects

included:

Replacing all the school

windows (the original windows

from the early 1970s)

Replacing 18 of the 30 HVAC units,

which were 20 years old at the

time of replacement (the other 12

units were replaced during the

summer of 2013)

Replacing carpeted classrooms

with tile flooring; re-carpeting the

school offices, library, and

teacher’s lounge

Converting an unused teacher

workspace into a Pastoral Office

A re-sealing of the school roof

during the summer of 2015

completed the school’s most

immediate capital improvement

needs.

QUEEN OF APOSTLES CATHOLIC CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2014 - JUNE 30, 2015

Gain a 65% Tax Credit….and Give a Student a Catholic School Education!

Last school year, 8 students at Queen of Apostles School received over $21,000 in financial aid from the new Virginia

Education Improvement Scholarship Tax Credit Program. The program awards a 65% tax credit on top of current state

and federal tax deductions for donations made to the Diocese of Arlington Scholarship Foundation, which will, in turn,

provide scholarships for new students wishing to attend our Diocesan Catholic Schools.

Who is eligible for the tax credit? What kind of donations qualify for the credit?

An individual or business entity may receive a tax credit for eligible donations. Eligible donations include donations by

cash, check, or marketable securities. Donations of goods, services or property are not eligible for the tax credit.

How are donations limited?

In order to receive a tax credit donors must contribute a minimum of $500. For individuals, including married couples,

eligible maximum donation is $125,000 per taxable year. Therefore, the maximum tax credit of an individual’s donation is

$81,250 (65% of $125,000). Business entities, including sole proprietorships, have no maximum donation amount.

How does a donor apply for a tax credit?

In order to qualify for a tax credit, donors must request pre-authorization from the Department of Education. The

Department of Education will issue a preauthorization notice to the donor indicating approval of the donation. The

preauthorization form can be downloaded from the Department of Education website: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/school_finance/scholarships_tax_credits

Faith Direct Electronic Giving

Since 2012, Faith Direct has served as Queen of Apostles’ electronic giving program. 211 QofA households (14% of our

parish families) have now made Faith Direct their preferred means of offertory and second collection giving.

Faith Direct gives you a convenient and consistent way to support Queen of

Apostles by electing to use direct debit from your bank or credit card account.

How does it work?

Visit faithdirect.net and enroll online securely. You may also enroll by

completing an enrollment form, available in the church vestibule, the parish

office, or online at queenofapostles.org/?p=602.

Elect to have your specified bank or credit card account debited on the 4th

or the 15th of the month for both offertory and any second collections you

support. You have the ability to change the amounts or payment methods

at any time by logging in to your account.

Parishioners can elect to receive “offertory cards” in lieu of envelopes to be

placed in the collection basket.

There is no charge to parishioners for enrolling. In fact, every family signing up with Faith Direct means one less package

of envelopes to print and mail out – and that will mean savings for our parish, which we can use to further expand our

ministries throughout our community.

QUEEN OF APOSTLES CATHOLIC CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2014 - JUNE 30, 2015

Executive Summary

The July 2014 - June 2015 fiscal year marked a period of much activity, investment and growth in the parish, as discussed

in other areas of this report. The financial analysis that follows references the Income Statement and Balance Sheet on

Page 9 of this report.

Major changes in operating income and expense from FY14 to FY15 occurred in the areas of Salaries & Benefits

and Parish Subsidy to the School. In the former case, new hirings in the Church office, as well as double-digit

increases in health and retirement benefit rates, led to a greater expense outlay. In the latter case, increased

tuition and other School income, and Church funding of various School capital improvement projects, resulted in

a smaller Parish Subsidy.

Major changes in net assets from FY14 to FY15 (an overall reduction) were the result of the various capital

improvement projects undertaken over the past two years. These projects reduced Church net assets to 2010

levels, when the new Church vestibule was completed. Overall, savings remain at healthy levels (above the levels

prescribed by the Diocese), and the parish continues to not have any long term debt.

As we look forward, Church collection income must keep pace with normal increases in expenses. Increased

enrollment in the School must also be matched by comparative increases in tuition income. Both Church and

School will continue to identify cost-saving opportunities through the guidance of the parish Finance Council.

Terminology: “FY14” = Fiscal Year July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014 “FY15” = Fiscal Year July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015

Operating Income

Collection Income - Offertory and Holy Day Collections

Down $11,527 (1.2% decrease)

In the past four years (since 2011), collection income has remained

stable within the range of $985,000, give or take $6,000. FY14 collection

income was on the higher end of this range, owing to an offertory

program conducted in December, 2013.

Liturgical & Sacramental Income - Misc. 2nd Collections, Candle Offerings

Down $11,653 (16.5% decrease)

There was a reduction in income for Capital Improvement, from $15,327 in FY14 to $9,437 in FY15, because the

parish discontinued the twice-annual Capital Improvement second collection.

Other Operating Income - inc. Christendom Grad School Rent

Down $2,659 (5.5% decrease)

The reduction in Other Operating Income was due to a reclassifying of School rental income, which is now

included in the Other School Income category.

ANALYSIS OF FY15 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Did you know? In addition to your generous support of

our parish, Queen of Apostles Parishioners pledged $183,107 to the 2015 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA),

exceeding our parish goal of $180,000! The BLA supports the seminarians,

offices and many other ministries and services of the Diocese or Arlington.

School Tuition Related Income

Up $28,546 (3.3% increase)

Our School added 10 students from FY14 (172 students) to FY15 (182 students). The School also increased tuition

by 3.5% from FY14 to FY15.

Other School Income - inc. PTO Income

Up $33,073 (24.5% increase)

The PTO made a $20,000 contribution to the school from their savings in order to fund the purchase of laptop

computers. There was also a significant increase in extended day income, from $78,580 in FY14 to $97,494 in FY15.

Parish Subsidy to School Income

Down $73,407 (36.1% decrease)

The Church was able to reduce the school subsidy because of the increased revenue in tuition and other income

that the School realized. Also, Church savings were channelled towards capital improvement projects at the school

(see: OTHER INCOME and EXPENSE)

Religious Ed and Youth Income

Up $23,031 (129% increase)

The inaugural Rome Pilgrimage, which raised nearly

$22,000, was the primary cause for the increased income.

Other Ministry and Program Income - inc. 50th Anniversary

Down $16,094 (24.7% decrease)

Reductions in income were due primarily to the

conclusion of 50th Anniversary festivities, and a reduction

in Poor Box contributions from $49,065 in FY14 to $46,290

in FY15.

Other Income

Down $20,962 (8.7% decrease)

We received a $25,033 bequest in FY14 which was not equalled in FY15 ($0 in bequests/estate memorials in FY15).

Despite an aggregate decrease in Other Income, there was an increase in Car Raffle Income, from $31,315 in FY14

to $39,361 in FY15. There was also a reduction in Other Donations: in FY14 we had received a sizable gift from a

parishioner who retired and moved out of the area.

TOTAL INCOME

Down $51,654 (2.0% decrease)

The income account that changed most significantly from FY14 to FY15 was the Parish Subsidy to the School, an intra-

parish transaction. Otherwise, total parish operating income in the aggregate was up by $21,753 from FY14 to FY15.

ANALYSIS OF FY15 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Easter Vigil Mass, April 4, 2015

QUEEN OF APOSTLES CATHOLIC CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2014 - JUNE 30, 2015

Operating Expenses

Salary and Benefits

Up $177,698 (13.1% increase)

Church: The 25.4% increase in Salaries and Benefits on the Church side was due primarily to the position of

Director of Operations and Stewardship being hired, after the position of Business Manager had remained unfilled

from 2012-2014. Adjusting for inflation, FY15 Church Salaries and Benefits were roughly similar to our 2011 Salaries

and Benefits, which were $547,045 when adjusted to 2015 US dollars.

School: The 7% increase in Salaries and Benefits on the School side included raises on pace with inflation, as well

as ~10% increases in Health and Retirement Benefits rates.

Facilities Expense - inc. Maintenance, Utilities

Down $10,100 (3.4% decrease)

The parish saved money because of the relatively mild winter

in FY15; costs had spiked in FY14 due to the extraordinary

number of times that snow plows needed to be called (an

average snow plow service call is in the range of $750 to

$1,750, depending on the severity and duration of the storm).

Utility expenses remained the same: While School Utilities

were slightly up, particularly in water costs, those increases

were offset by cost reductions on the Church side, primarily in

natural gas costs.

General Operating Expense - inc. Administrative, Technology

Down $45,501 (20.4% decrease)

The Church saved money in Envelope/Offertory expenses due to an increased number of parishioners using Faith

Direct. The School significantly reduced its Technology expense due to the completion of a number of projects in

FY14: Upgrades to student computers, upgrades to ActiveBoards, and repairs of the School intercom system.

Parish Subsidy to School Expense: Covered in OPERATING INCOME

Religious Ed and Youth Ministry Expense

Up $19,971 (88.1% increase)

The increased expense matches increased income for Religious Ed and Youth Ministry, which funded the inaugural

Rome Pilgrimage trip.

Other Ministry and Program Expense - inc. Poor Box Beneficiaries

Down $1,054 (1.9% decrease)

The primary account in this category - Poor Box - remained equivalent year-over-year. Recipients of FY15 poor box

proceeds include:

ACCA……………………………………………………………………………………... $4,004

Christ House……………………………………………………………………….. $3,648

Little Sisters of the Poor……………………………………………………. $4,004

Missionaries of Charity……………………………………………………...$3,537

Nepal Earthquake……………………………………………………………... $2,354

Poor Sisters of St. Joseph……………………………………………….. $7,063

Catholic Charities………………………………………………………………. $2,500

Rosary Day Care Center (Madrid, Spain)……………………. $5,000

Other (e.g. Individual Requests, Grocery Cards)…….. $14,526

Other Expense

Up $17,177 (9.8% increase)

Our Operational Assessment (to the Diocese) remained

equivalent to prior years, as the amount is calculated by Offertory

Income.

Car Raffle expenses increased: disbursements to parish groups

which followed the comparative increase in Car Raffle Income in

FY15.

TOTAL OPERATING EXPENSE

Up $103,324 (4.1% increase)

As noted above, the primary reason for total increased expenses from FY14 to FY15 was in Salary and Benefits. In

other areas, the parish saw net cost savings through a reduced Parish Subsidy to the School, decreased Operating

Expenses, and comparatively equivalent figures from FY14 to FY15 across the other expense categories.

Other Income & Expense

NET OTHER INCOME & EXPENSE - inc. Capital Expenditures

$134,028 in FY14; $378,109 in FY15

Through the guidance of our Finance Council, Facilities Committee and Pastoral Council, our parish has

undertaken a number of capital improvement projects over the past 2 years, which, in FY14, were funded through

operating income, and in FY15, through Church savings.

ANALYSIS OF FY15 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Student performance from Vacation Bible School

QUEEN OF APOSTLES CATHOLIC CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2014 - JUNE 30, 2015

Balance Sheet

Total Net Assets

Down $383,932 (15.9% decrease)

Savings from the Church DIAL account (interest-bearing account managed by the Chancery) were drawn down in

order to fund critical capital improvement projects, particularly at the School. These savings allowed us to move

forward on these projects without the need for a capital campaign.

The Diocese prescribes that, conservatively, Church Net Assets ($1,635,732 as of June 30, 2015) should at least

equal Total Church Operating Expense ($1,281,636 in FY15). Our long term goal is to replenish savings to the levels

that our parish had attained in the past decade.

Total Liabilities

Up $41,310 (356% increase)

Deferred income for the school increased due to uncollected tuition monies from the 2014-15 school year.

However, the majority of this money was collected by the start of the 2015-16 school year.

The parish does not have any long term debt.

Conclusion

The Church and School balance sheet remains strong, while operating expenses exceeded slightly operating income in

FY15. Income must see growth in FY16 in order that savings may be replenished and further investment made to realize

parish goals. Funding for future capital improvement projects must be carefully discerned so as to maintain our healthy

savings balances.

LOOKING AHEAD July 2015 - June 2016

TOWARDS A FAMILY

FRIENDLY PARISH A Queen of Apostles Program

Oct. 2015 - Sep. 2016

Towards a Family Friendly Parish is

a new parish program as of October,

2015. Every month through

September of 2016, we will propose

a theme to consider, some practices

to experience the beauty and truth

of the family, a Psalm to pray, and a

speaker’s presentation related to the

theme. The goal of this program is to

strengthen our relationships with

others, especially within our families

and in our parish community.

September Social Role

As we continue to grow as a parish family, our needs are also increasing. That

is why we are calling on all parishioners to continually reflect on the time, talent

and treasure that they can contribute to our parish and community life. Here

are some of the themes that you can expect to hear more about throughout the

FY16 fiscal year (July 2015 - June 2016):

Supporting and growing our parish groups and ministries. An expanded

Ministries Fair in September served as a renewed message to parishioners that

getting involved in the parish life is of great import: both for one’s spiritual

development, and for the health of our parish community. In the background of

this Fair and the other ministry activities that will take place throughout the year

is a continued effort to support our ministry heads: through quarterly meetings

that will serve to coordinate activities and promote a culture of discipleship.

Addressing our ongoing capital improvement needs. Our 50th anniversary

celebrations served as a reminder that we are stewards of an aging property.

On top of the completed work discussed in this report, projects already

undertaken for the current year include a re-sealing of the school roof, and

replacement of the church mechanical room roof. Other projects that have

been identified as time-sensitive include: parking lot repaving, church lighting

and acoustics, replacement of the church organ, improved handicapped

access to all parish facilities, security upgrades to the campus, and a long-term

plan for the Christendom Graduate School. We are also looking at upgrades to

Hannan Hall that could make it a revenue-generator for the parish.

Promoting our core values of family, stewardship and discipleship. And

grounding our efforts in an unfailing trust in God and His will for our parish.

“Will You Spend One Hour with Me?”

Did you know there are 121 Hours of Eucharistic Adoration that are offered by

parishioners every week? Many of these parishioners commit to more than one

hour... sometimes as many as 5 or 6 hours in a week. For all who participate in

Eucharistic Adoration, it is a significant commitment. That is why this most

important ministry of our parish must continually attract new interest. If you are

being called to Eucharistic Adoration, simply make a visit, whether it’s for 15

minutes or for a full hour. Then, pray about becoming a weekly adorer and fill

out an interest form next to the Adoration Chapel entrance. Have children? Our

Children’s Adoration Hour is from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon every Friday morning.
