PARISH NEWS

June 21, 2020 - June 28, 2020

St. Vincent de Paul St. Vincent de Paul at Queen of Apostles would like to thank the Sisters of the Holy Name for their generous grant to help support our brothers and sisters with food insecurities. Thank you!

Resumption of Public Masses Following the directives of the Santa Clara County Public Health Officer, outdoor worship in groups no larger than 25 persons is permitted. Parishes and chapels in the Diocese of San Jose will resume public worship outdoors beginning Mon-day, June 15, 2020. • The general dispensation from the obligation to attend Sun-day Mass remains in effect for all Catholics in the Diocese. • Persons who are most vulnerable to this virus, those who have been exposed to Covid-19, and those who are ill should refrain from attending Mass. • All persons over the age of six must wear face coverings, practice six-feet of physical distancing, and sanitize their hands when entering the worship space and immediately before re-ceiving Communion. Our outdoor Masses will be between the Parish Community Center and the school building. Access to enter will be through the large parish/school parking lot. Please call the Parish Of-fice, 408-253-7560, to sign-up your name and reserve a seat for the following schedule of Masses: Monday to Saturday at 8:00 am* Sunday at 7:00 am, 8:00 am and 9:00 am* *Kindly sign-up once a week to accommodate others. Addition-al Masses will be added accordingly. The health and the common good of all people is our priori-ty. Practicing safety precautions is pro-life. It shows our con-cern for the life and health of all. Refraining from attending Mass when appropriate is not only an act of charity, but a mor-al imperative, as the health and lives of others are at stake.

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

V D. B , P.S.S. June 25, 1961 – June 9, 2020

“The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” (Gen 12:1) With Fr. Vince Bui, it is as though he heard a call like that of Abram when he came to us out of a time of crisis in Vietnam. After graduating from high school in 1979, he attempted to escape from Vietnam but was captured in his thirteen attempts. His brother arranged another attempt and was successful on this fourteenth try. He escaped Vietnam on Easter Sunday, 1981, an experience which gave the mystery of Easter an ever deeper meaning of suffering, freedom, and new life. After spending about eight months in refugee camps in Thailand and Bangkok, he arrived in the US on February 4, 1982. Vince was born on June 25, 1961 in Bien Hoa, North Vietnam, to Trinh Q. and Yen T. (Duong) Bui. He is the sixth of eight children and is survived by two brothers (one also a priest) and four sisters (one a Dominican Sister). After getting settled at his father’s cousin’s house in Illinois in 1982, Fr. Bui spent two years studying English at Divine Word College in Iowa and then moved to Quincy, Illinois to join the Franciscans. He remained with them for only one year. For the next four years he lived in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois while he worked as a bilingual social worker with refugees through the East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center. In addition to working with refugees, he also worked in a variety of other positions for the local community and the local church. In 1989 he took a position with the Resettlement Program of the Catholic Social Service of the Diocese of Peoria, IL. Out of this work, he gave himself another chance at official ministry by applying to the Diocese of Lansing, MI in 1990. He began his theological studies and formation at St Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, MD in 1990 under the auspices of the Diocese of Lansing. Fr. Bui was ordained for the Diocese of Lansing on June 10, 1995. He spent two years as an associate pastor at St. Rob-ert Bellarmine, Flushing, MI from 1995-1997. His trajectory with the Sulpicians began in an unusual way for his time in that his candidacy years of formation were at the Emmaus Spirituality Centre (Lusaka, Zambia), a mission seminary providing a propaedeutic program for young men interested in going to the major seminary. While in Africa he con-tracted malaria, a disease which had negative ramifications for his health from then on. After his two years of candidacy in Zambia, he returned to the States and was admitted as a definitive member of the Society in 2000. He then spent a year at The Catholic University of America completing the licentiate degree in Canon Law (2001). After completing the JCL, he was assigned to the faculty of St. Patrick’s Seminary, Menlo Park, CA from 2001-2006. From there, he went off to do further studies in Canon Law at St. Paul University, Ottawa, Canada, but never completed the degree. He returned to St. Patrick’s Seminary in 2009 and remained there until the Sulpicians withdrew from St. Patrick’s in 2017. After a sabbatical year, Fr. Bui moved to Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, Texas, in 2018. When the corona virus pandemic forced the closure of the seminary in late March, Vince went to live with his cousin, Ngoc Do, in San Jose, CA. Unfortunately, everyone in her family contracted the virus in late April. Fr. Bui already brought with him a compromised immune system from his past illnesses and so was an easy victim to the virus. He had to be hospitalized on May 13 in the San Jose Regional Medical Center due to complications from the virus. After nearly a month in the ICU and on a ventilator, Fr. Bui died on June 9, 2020, one day shy of his twenty-fifth anniversary of or-dination. The family has asked that Fr. Bui be cremated and that the cremains be returned to Vietnam so that he can be buried in the family plot. A memorial service will be held in the Diocese of San Jose. Richard M. Gula, PSS

High School Youth Ministry & Confirmation Upcoming 4-week series: “More Than A Hashtag” Our world is not as it should be. There is pain, evil, and injustice all around us. In the age of social media, it is easier than ever to stay informed about all sorts of injus-tices, but is sending a tweet, posting a selfie, or sharing a video about an inspiring cause really all it takes to make a difference in the world? Or is it possible that justice is about something much more than a hashtag? In this 4-week series, we'll challenge students to not just post about the injustices around them, but to actually do something about them by loving mercy, acting justly, and walking humbly. Dates: Sunday, June 21, 4pm Sunday, June 28, 4pm Sunday, July 5, 4pm To register for this virtual series, please email us at [email protected]. They were recognized at the June 14th Mass.

Social Justice Corner As I write this column, my own father, age 92, back in NJ, is in the very last hours or days of his life. He is very ready to meet Jesus and the Blessed Mother and all those who eagerly wait to welcome him. Dad is a man of deep faith with a devotion to the Blessed Mother, daily Mass and prayer, and a Eucharistic min-ister to the Sick and RCIA instructor until just two years ago. I will miss him terribly, as will my mother and 10 siblings and his grandchildren – yet we send him to heaven, knowing we will see him again one day! That’s the Lord’s promise to us – He who is our shepherd, who desires us to be reunited with His Father. God, Our Father, bless all the fathers in the world. Guide them to be good role models and loving to their children. Help them to be loving fathers like You are and like St. Joseph was to Je-sus. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Bless them for the many sacrifices they make for their children and families, and the big and small ways they lift children to achieve dreams through beyond their reach. Give fathers the grace and patience to handle situations in loving way and for forgiveness where it is needed. Bless those who have lost a spouse to death, separation, or divorce, and who are parenting their children alone. Bless fathers who are imprisoned and those who are absent or serving in the military away from their families. Strengthen all fathers by Your love that they may be-come the loving, caring persons they are meant to be. For all fathers and grandfathers, living and deceased, for stepfathers and foster fathers, and those who serve in the role of fathers. We pray for fathers who are giving their ‘all’ during these pan-demic times with love and sacrifice. May today be a day of blessing for them and their families. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
