accomplishments, it’s always ao decide which of our

many stories to highlight in ourannual report. We choose ones thataddress particular strategic priorities,and we also consider that we’re oftenasked “what is a library today, in thisdigital age?” For centuries, librarieshave been centres of learning,stewards of knowledge and symbolsof culture and civilization. That stillholds true today, and at the same timewe’re vanguards of change.

In selecting the stories to include, topaint the picture of the library today,the concept of openness emerged asa consistent theme. Queen’s

University aspires to be not only atop Canadian university but also a

prominent global institution. We areinclusive – open, not closed. As thesubtitle for the recently approvedQueen’s 2018-2023 StrategicResearch Plan puts it, we want to“bring Queen’s to the world and theworld to Queen’s.” This dovetailswith our reflections in the libraryabout the changing landscape ofinformation resources and thepromise of the digital age. As wecame together to contemplate ourinformation resources vision this pastyear, we embraced a set of principlesthat speak to the full picture of thatlandscape, spanning our roles in thedissemination and preservation ofinformation as well as its discoveryand access. Similarly, our Action Planto Support Anti-Racism, Diversity,Inclusion and Indigenous Cultures

pointed the way to new paths fordeveloping our information services,resources and spaces. And, across thelibrary, each individual staff memberopened doors – literally andfiguratively – to the information ourcommunity needs.

Information Resources VisionQueen’s University Library provides leadership in the development of a global knowledge commons that enables highimpact research and scholarship, reflecting our values of diversity, inclusion and open access to information.

Our priorities and objectives for information resources1 are informed by a continual process of consultative, evidence-based and transparent practices based on the following principles:

People

FACULTY LIAISONUNITS Faculty liaison units maintain a strongunderstanding of the curriculum andresearch programs of the faculty withwhich they are aligned. Workingtogether with specialists across thelibrary, liaison librarians helpindividuals design research strategies,access and effectively use keyinformation resources, manage

research data, publish research, andunderstand copyright. Liaisonlibrarians also work with faculty andstudents to offer a wide range ofteaching and learning support,including course-related instructionalsessions and programs, support forinquiry-based learning, andexperiential learning opportunities.With information resources at thefoundation of learning and research,liaison librarians also play a key rolein ensuring that the library isproviding access to needed resources.

The Education liaison team worksdirectly with teacher candidates,faculty, graduate students, the Schoolof English and Continuing TeacherEducation in the Faculty of Education,and community teachers andlibrarians.

The Engineering and Science liaisonteam works directly with students,faculty and staff in the Faculty ofEngineering and Applied Science andscience departments of the Faculty ofArts and Science, as well as relatedresearch centres.

The Health Sciences liaison team worksdirectly with students, faculty, staffand health professionals in the Facultyof Health Science disciplines ofmedicine, nursing and rehabilitationtherapy, and the life sciences. Theteam also provides a range of supportsfor clinicians in community hospitals.

The Humanities and Social Sciencesliaison team works directly withstudents, faculty and staff in thehumanities and social sciencesdepartments of the Faculty of Arts andScience, the Smith School of Businessand the School of Policy Studies.

The Law liaison team works directlywith students, faculty and staff in theFaculty of Law and other members ofthe Queen’s and local communitiesengaging in legal research.

ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS Queen’s University Archives preservesand provides access to theinformation assets and historicalrecord of the university, private papersrelated to Kingston and the region,and the City of Kingston Archives.

W.D. Jordan Rare Books and SpecialCollections preserves and providesaccess to impressive collections ofrare books, maps, posters and otherspecial resources covering all subjects.

LIBRARY-WIDEDIVISIONSThe library-wide divisions work withliaison librarians, university partnersand students, faculty and staffspanning all disciplines.

Discovery and Technology Services isresponsible for a set of interrelatedservices, systems and tools connectingusers with rich and varied informationresources and services. The division’sname emphasizes the user experienceas its raison d’être, and anunderstanding and application of userexperience design in all its work.

Information Resources providesleadership and coordination in thedevelopment, stewardship andassessment of collections to supportthe research, teaching and learningneeds of the university, andcontributes to the development ofinformation resources strategies.

Information Services manages thedevelopment and delivery of high-quality user experience at the library’sphysical and virtual service points,where questions are answered orreferred and a variety of interactionsoccur relating to library services,collections and spaces. Accessibility,diversity and inclusion arefoundational aspects of theseinteractions.

Open Scholarship Services develops aculture and services that encouragethe sharing, as openly as possible, andpreservation of Queen’s scholarlyoutput, including researchpublications, research data and relatedcomputer code, student digitalscholarship, and open coursematerials. The division alsoencompasses services supportingaccess to and use of data-intensiveresources outside Queen’s, includingmaps and geospatial data, StatisticsCanada data and other governmentinformation.

Advancing open education In support of open education and cost savings forstudents, the library led a series of faculty and studentconsultations, workshops, community events andsuccessful pilot projects through the Open andAffordable Course Materials Working Group, reportingto the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Teaching andLearning. The result was a foundation of goals forservices to support faculty in creating, adapting andadopting open textbooks in Queen’s courses. Librariansare also working with faculty to highlight opportunitiesfor research using open information resources thatstudents will continue to have access to after graduation.

Designing and deliveringlearning opportunitiesThe library engages deeply with faculty and students inevery discipline to integrate information resources andservices seamlessly in academic programs and facilitateinquiry-based learning.

Once again we hosted the annual Inquiry@Queen’s

Undergraduate Research Conference – the eleventh!Students’ demonstrations of their i@q projects includedthis one on “3d surface scanning for tumour location innon-melanoma skin cancer.”

Engaging students inexperiential learningWe formalized a program of libraryexperiential learning opportunities incollaboration with the Queen’s ExperientialLearning Hub this year. As part of thatprogram, during her internship at theQueen’s University Archives student NicoleBucik created an exhibit on Garden Islandand the Mechanics’ Institute that wasdisplayed at Queen’s Park in Toronto.

Focusing on graduate studentsAs well as offering ongoingindividual research consultations,our support for graduate student andpostdoctoral fellows across thedisciplines included a full review ofacademic skills support incollaboration with the School ofGraduate Studies, graduate studentworkshops in the ExpandingHorizons series, graduate studentorientations and training sessions,and hosting of the DissertationBootcamp and a writing retreat,including workshops with librarians.

Hello SyllabusBank, hello again ExamBank!We launched a new service in partnershipwith the ams: SyllabusBank, a collection ofQueen’s course descriptions to help studentsin course selection and studies. Working withthe Office of the University Registrar and theFaculty of Law we also upgraded ourlongstanding ExamBank service to make itmobile-friendly and more accessible and to improve keyword search for exams of all faculties, in one convenient location.

Taking action on diversity and inclusionThe library’s values statements are explicit about the importance of inclusion.This year we applied a library lens to the recommendations of Queen’s Truthand Reconciliation Commission Task Force and the Principal’s ImplementationCommittee on Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion, and developed an Action Planto ensure that we are offering: services that embrace Queen’s commitment toinclusivity and diversity; access to information resources that support adiversified curriculum and diverse research interests; inclusive, accessiblespaces that welcome all members of the community. The Action Planrecommended specific objectives that are now included in the library’sStrategic Priorities.

Developing inclusive, welcoming spacesThe library provides an open, welcoming environment for all. This year, initiatives to enhance our facilitiesincluded:

Opening the Watson Hall Library Information Networkat Queen’s (linq). The linq builds upon our iconiclibrary locations and offers a new, agile form of libraryinfrastructure. Engaging with the Society of Graduate and ProfessionalStudents to plan for an upcoming renovation of thegraduate student reading room in Stauffer Library.Increasing hours at the Lederman Law Library and theEducation Library to accommodate Faculty of Educationand Law exams.Renovating the former Teacher Resource Centre spacein the Education Library to showcase teaching resourcesand create new student study spaces.Renovating the Bracken Library lower level to help meeta Faculty of Health Sciences space need and improvestudent study spaces.

Supporting student wellnessThis year the library established a Designated MovementSpace in Stauffer Library in a partnership with the Queen’s

Athletics & Recreation Centre (arc) to promote activestudy breaks at the library, and also held a number ofwellness events, including stress relief activities at alllocations during exams.

Taking a global view We engaged in a big picture exercisethis year to consider our vision ofinformation resources for the 21stcentury research library at Queen’s –not only the content we collect andlicense but also advances in openaccess, long-term stewardship of thedigital scholarly record and ourcultural heritage responsibilities. We affirmed that “Queen’s UniversityLibrary provides leadership in thedevelopment of a global knowledgecommons that enables high impactresearch and scholarship, reflectingour values of diversity, inclusion andopen access to information.” (SeeInformation Resources Vision, page 5.)

Innovating to broaden the reach ofQueen’s researchAlong with provincial, national and international partners, we’re working toleverage digital opportunities to advance innovative, cost-effective models ofscholarly communication that enable academic ownership of content. We’re alsoworking to raise awareness of these opportunities at Queen’s. The Queen’s

Digital Scholarly Record Working Group proposed a bold statement of principlesfor the dissemination of research results, in support of improving the impact ofresearch conducted across all disciplines.

PRINCIPLES FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF RESEARCH RESULTS

Queen’s researchers and scholars aim to generate globally impactful research and scholarship, thus Queen’s gives voice to research results according to thefollowing principles:

ValueThe university’s evaluation of research impact includes a wide range ofmeasures, including not only bibliometric analytics but also assessmentsappropriately based in qualitative analysis.

OpennessThe results of research and scholarship should be disseminated as widely aspossible for the advancement of research and the benefit of society.

InclusivityAll disciplines, areas of study and human differences are supported, and it isrecognized that they have unique and particular needs.

Collaborative PlatformsThe university supports the development and use of distributed, reputableplatforms for research dissemination and preservation that reduce costbarriers and are guided by the fair data principles – that data must beFindable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

Engaged ResearchersThe university supports researchers in their engagement in the researchenterprise, including regaining control of the scholarly communicationecosystem (e.g. by intentionally licensing their publications and other researchresults so that they retain their ownership while sharing them openly).

Engaging with the services guided by these principles helps Queen’s researchersand scholars ensure that their digital scholarly records are accessible andpreserved in a global knowledge commons.

Experimentingwith new openaccess journalmodelsAs part of our efforts to advanceinnovative, cost-effective scholarlycommunications, we engaged inplanning for an internationalcollaboration with Fields Medalist Sir Timothy Gowers (University ofCambridge), Dan Kral (University ofWarwick) and the Confederation ofOpen Access Repositories (coar): the launch of an overlay journal calledAdvances in Combinatorics, builtentirely on articles contained in thearXiv repository. It is free to read andwill not charge authors to publish.The relatively low costs of running thejournal and administrative support are being covered by the library.

Advancing digital scholarshipThe library is developing a rich recordof accomplishment in supportingdigital scholarship in collaborationwith Queen’s faculty and students.The Diniacopoulos Collection and the Polychrome Images pilot projectswere two such collaborations. Theprojects included the development of guidelines for virtual exhibithosting at the library and a serviceframework to support faculty, staff,and researchers in their use of library-hosted platforms for digitalscholarship, using resources withinand outside the library. For example,with these services students can carryout research on otherwise completelyinaccessible objects and use them tomake virtual exhibits as a part of theircoursework.

ModifyingacquisitionspracticesWe aim to provide our communitymembers with the information theyneed while serving as responsiblestewards of public funds. Working incollaboration with our communityand peer institutions, one strategyinvolves modifying the ways wepurchase information, in particularwhere journal pricing and bundling ofcontent poses significant challenges.In 2016-17 we participated in a JournalUsage Project coordinated by theCanadian Knowledge ResearchNetwork that involved 28 Canadianuniversities, allowing each to gaininstitution-specific data and at thesame time benefit from aggregateddata analysis. This past year,weexamined three sets of data relating to 31,137 journals and asked Queen’s

researchers again to verify which ofthose are important to them. Our aimis to ensure that we are getting bestvalue in our expenditures goingforward.

allowing scholars, in a sustainable way, to access the work of others

and publish their own work in peer reviewed journals without the

DID YOU KNOW? Open Journal System (OJS) is a programprovided by the library for use byQueen’s faculty and staff wishing topublish an online open-access orsubscription-based journal. The serviceis offered free-of-charge. OJS assistswith every stage of the refereedpublishing process, from receivingsubmissions through to onlinepublication. Queen’s currently hosts 20 journals. Giving voice todiversecommunitiesThis year we planned the creation of a new project intern position whichprovides a Queen’s undergraduatestudent with an Indigenousbackground the opportunity to workon the development of informationresources and services and university-wide digital planning. As well ashelping us deepen our knowledge of Indigenous matters, we hope thisposition will encourage students withIndigenous backgrounds to pursuegraduate programs in informationstudies, and help increase the numberof Indigenous librarians in Canada.

Engaging withcollections –Books@Queen’s The library was excited to participate inthe Books@Queen’s podcast project,in collaboration with the instructor andstudents of musc156 (Introduction toDigital Audio Recording, Editing andMixing) and cfrc Radio. The projectfeatured Queen’s students, faculty andstaff discussing information resources,available through our library, that have inspired them. You can find the podcasts online: virtual-exhibits.library.queensu.ca/ books-at-queens/

Special exhibitsThe library hosts many exhibits thatincrease the visibility of particularcollections, inspiring learners andenabling new scholarship. One of ourmany such exhibits this year was “TheSpotlight on the Edmison Collection”featuring books, articles, pamphlets,and reports from the EdmisonCollection in the William R.Lederman Law Library, as well aspictures, news clippings and othermaterial from the Edmison fonds atthe Queen’s University Archives. John Alexander Edmison, q.c., was anappointed Member of the first ParoleBoard of Canada in 1959. Previously,he had been Assistant to the Principalof Queen’s University. Educated inArts at Queen’s University and in Lawat McGill, Mr. Edmison practiced lawin Montreal until his enlistment withthe Black Watch, Royal HighlandRegiment of Canada, in 1940. InFrance and Germany, he set up anorganization for the care of refugees,displaced persons, and concentrationcamp survivors.

Building capacityThe library’s digital initiatives and other learningand research services require skilled personnelworking collaboratively across the organization.We’re prioritizing those needs and leveragingavailable resources. An example this year wasour increased capacity for research datamanagement infrastructure support, with thehiring of a Research Data Management SystemsLibrarian, in an innovative collaboration withOntario Scholars Portal. We’re also finding newways to help everyone keep up-to-date in ourrapidly changing environment, with a newLibrary Learning Hub offering a wide range ofstaff learning opportunities.

Collaborating in the province The library has actively engaged in the strategicplanning of the Collaborative Futures projectwith twelve other Ontario universities toimplement a shared library services platform(lsp). The shared lsp will allow our libraries toimprove our support for faculty and students,modernize internal workflows with greaterstreamlining and less duplication of effort,share expertise, reduce or redirect costs, andmeet our stewardship responsibilities for theprovince’s valuable print and electronicresearch collections. Our involvement hasincluded chairing the working group thatdeveloped the Request for Proposals andevaluated vendor options. That processconcluded this year and we began preparing for the migration.

We also partnered with four Ontariouniversities to support the long-termpreservation and access to scholarly printmaterials. The Keep@Downsview preservationproject shares library preservation and storagefacilities and services between Queen’s

University, University of Toronto, University of Ottawa, Western University, and McMasterUniversity. With the program, important butless frequently used print materials from thefive university libraries are kept at the facility.This partnership is part of a larger movement in research libraries to collaboratively preserveprint collections.

Being GLAM! glam stands for galleries, libraries, archives andmuseums – organizations that share common interests in engaging communities with our cultural heritage. The library organized an event to explore these interestswith local glam organizations and Dr. Guy Berthiaume,Librarian and Archivist of Canada. In addition to Dr.Berthiaume, speakers included Patricia Enright, ChiefLibrarian, Kingston Frontenac Public Library, PaulRobertson, City Curator, City of Kingston, and severalQueen’s individuals – Jan Allen, Director, AgnesEtherington Art Centre, Paul Banfield, UniversityArchivist, Rosaleen Hill, Program Director, Department of Art Conservation and Art History, and MarthaWhitehead, Vice-Provost (Digital Planning) andUniversity Librarian. The event also marked the signingof a memorandum of agreement between Queen’s

University and Library and Archives Canada, signaling an intention to explore opportunities of interest to both institutions.

Collaborating across the countryThe digital infrastructure – both human and technical –that will advance Queen’s research depends on nationalcollaborations. The library contributed to key nationalinitiatives to advance digital research infrastructure(dri) this year, with Vice-Provost (Digital Planning) andUniversity Librarian Martha Whitehead serving on theexecutive of the Leadership Council on Digital ResearchInfrastructure, which presented an analysis of dri needsto the Ministry of Industry, Science and EconomicDevelopment, and with the secondment of DataLibrarian Jeff Moon to the role of Director of Portage, a national research data management (rdm) networkcoordinated by the Canadian Association of ResearchLibraries. Portage assists researchers and other rdmstakeholders, through a network of expertise andnational platforms for planning, preserving, anddiscovering research data. As well, Martha Whiteheadbecame chair of the steering committee of the NationalHeritage Digitization Strategy (nhds), an initiativelaunched by the federal government in 2016 to facilitategreater access to Canada’s national heritage throughcoordinated digitization programs.

Collaborating with our donors We are privileged to have manywonderful supporters and donors who help us to provide world-classservices to the teachers, learners andresearchers of the Queen’s community.

This year the library engaged with theSociety of Graduate and ProfessionalStudents to inform the development ofthe Helen Howard Graduate StudentsReading Room in Stauffer Library, toopen in fall of 2018. The room isnamed for Dr. Helen Howard, aQueen’s grad (Artsci’48), and strongsupporter of Queen’s, whose gift madethe space possible. Dr. Howard holdsan mls from McGill and a PhD fromRutgers, and was the Director of theGraduate School of Library andInformation Studies at McGill from1984 to 1989. We were so pleased tomeet Dr. Howard and to hear abouther interest in libraries and the studentlearning experience.

The new Library Information Networkat Queens (linq) in Watson Hall,funded by the Stauffer Foundation,opened in September to provide awelcoming new study space with thelook and feel of favourite libraryspaces. Here students can study andwork together on course-relatedprojects in an accessible location closeto professors and teaching assistants,as well as residences and dining halls.This space advances one of thestrategies outlined in the Library andArchives Master Plan (lamp) to

enhance the student learningexperience by creating a network ofsuch spaces across campus.

We acquired additional interestingbooks for the Schulich-Woolf RareBook Collection this year with thesupport of our generous donor Mr. Seymour Schulich. As well Mr. Schulich presented us with a

marvelous collection of historicalfinancial documents, mostly from the 18th century. This “scripophily”collection appears to be one of thelargest in public institutions. PrincipalDaniel Woolf also presented us with an additional collection of rare books,mostly from the 17th century, onhistory and related subjects.

Advancing international research engagementThe library continued to engage ininternational initiatives to supportresearch impact at a global level. One example is the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (coar),where Vice-Provost (DigitalPlanning) and University LibrarianMartha Whitehead was elected to the Executive Board for a three-yearterm. coar’s mission is to grow aglobal network of open access digitalrepositories of research outputs withthe aim of enabling every citizen inthe world to access – and benefitfrom – knowledge produced frompublicly-funded research.

Open MatarikiThis year our work with the librariesof the Matariki Network ofUniversities included a project toadvance our common interests inscholarly communications. It involveda Queen’s-led survey of practices ineach institution and subsequentdiscussions at the MatarikiHumanities Colloquium in Tübingenin October 2017, resulting in a set ofinitiatives called Open Matariki. Thegoal is to learn from the ways thateach institution is approaching similarissues in our different contexts and towork together to influence the globalecosystem of scholarlycommunications.

Working with AfricaIn March we welcomed six librariansfrom Africa to a five-day course onsystematic review methodology in collaboration with Queen’s

Collaboration for Health Care Quality and the Consortium ofAdvanced Research and Training(carta). Health sciences librariansalso supported a collaborationbetween Queen’s School ofRehabilitation Therapy and theUniversity of Gondar, providingadvice on resources needed tosupport an occupational therapyprogram for Ethiopia.

ExpandinginternationalmobilityWhether our students are at the Bader International Study Centre(bisc) or in remote rural areas of theworld, they deserve the same accessto information they would have at theQueen’s Kingston campus. Whereverpossible we aim to provide digitalaccess to the information and servicesthey need for course work andindependent research, seamlesslywithin their online environments. The work of the Open and AffordableCourse Materials Working Group,which included representation fromthe bisc, is a good example of effortsto make access to information easier,and less expensive, for students.

Supportinginternational at homeWe continually review our serviceswith international students in mind tocreate a welcoming and supportiveuser experience. This year our workwith the School of English benefitedall students with a first language otherthan English, with the creation ofmulti-lingual guides to help withanything from printing to searchingfor information and a variety ofeducational programs. School ofEnglish students also benefited fromthe development and promotion ofcollections of English languagelearning materials.

My aim is to have studentsappreciate that libraries arefantastic repositories of resourcesso that is one reason why I havechosen plays in anthologies, ratherthan have students purchase singlecopies. Students have started usinga new jargon – that they are rentingbooks – and I really want them tounderstand the public good of ouruniversity libraries.

I just wanted to say a sincerethank you for making the ATC tour possible for theMastercard Gondar team. Theinformation and learnings youshared were all helpful to eachof them in their individualcapacities. ATC was definitelya highlight of the tour.

I just wanted to thank you for thefantastic presentation that you gaveto my class. They really enjoyed it,and learned a lot. Last week I did aquick “poll everywhere” to assessthe skills they were confident in,and the ones I needed to keepworking on.
