April 2015

Join Wally’s Big Push on Satur-

day, April 11 and help raise

funds for charity.

Breast cancer survivor Michael

Beck BEM, 82, is walking with

Wally Wheelbarrow and friends

on a three-mile route through

the Chalke Valley as part of a

fundraising campaign for Stars

Appeal’s Breast Cancer Unit.

Stars is a Salisbury District Hos-

pital charity that helps local peo-

ple across all wards and departments but

has a particular focus on cancer, cardiac

care, and children and babies. Michael, pic-

tured, and his fundraising wheelbarrow have

already raised several thousand pounds that

have been used in various de-

partments at the hospital.

He said: “Having survived

breast cancer myself, this cam-

paign means a great deal to me

and I want to help in any way I

can. At 82, it will certainly be a

challenge but I feel up to it -

and so does Wally!”

If you would like to join them in

their venture, contact Will Hillary

on 01722 780271 or Andrew

Reiss on 01722 780257. It costs just £10 to

participate and includes a light lunch here at

The Queen’s Head - the walk’s destination. It

starts at 10.30am in Fifield Bavant. To donate,

In most issues of our

Newsletter we like to high-

light different Badger-

branded ales brewed by

Hall & Woodhouse. This

time it’s the turn of First

Call. This rich and hoppy

beer is brewed from a sin-

gle hop variety. First Gold

are dwarf hops that were developed in

the 1990s and grow low in hedgerows.

These versatile aroma hops add an

orangey and slightly floral

flavour. Here’s our at-a-

glance guide to the ale:

Smell: Floral hop, roasted

malt

Colour: Dark amber, ruby

brown

Taste: Malty, orange zest,

spicy hops

Availability: All year round

ABV: 4%

Eat with: Great with roasts and pies

To mark St George’s Day this year, we

are introducing a whole week of dishes

celebrating the Great British Lunch.

From Monday, April 20 through to Friday,

April 24, we will be offering a range of

meals that celebrate the fantastic pro-

duce and recipes from the British Isles in

a special lunchtime-only deal.

At just £10 for two mouthwatering

courses, it’s amazing value for a weekday

treat. And our cosy, traditional English

pub is the ideal place to enjoy such a

patriotic occasion.

We are currently finalising our menu -

we’re thinking along the lines of bangers

and mash, shepherd’s pie, apple crum-

ble… - but expect to see some much-

loved classics.

While we’re on the subject of great British

food, don’t forget that our delicious, tradi-

tional roasts that are served every Sun-

day at only £9.95.

Recruiting now at The Queen’s Head

The Queen’s Head is looking for a lunch-

time Kitchen Porter to work Monday to

Friday, as well as a Breakfast Chef.

Landlady Elizabeth Edwards said that

these two posts could be combined into a

single role. The positions would suit a local

person of any age, but if the applicant is

less than 24 and is aiming to gain a cook-

ing qualification, then an apprenticeship

scheme is available.

We are also recruiting part-time general

assistants. You must be older than 18 for

these positions, due to licensing laws.

Please contact Elizabeth if you are inter-

ested in applying, or if you require further

details about the roles and responsibilities.

Farewell to friends

We have to say goodbye this month to team

members Molly and Steve. Molly is off trav-

elling to Australia. We wish them both all

the best in their new ventures.
