SECTION –B1.      Have you visited town areas/ villages in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh?

Yes

2.      What were the similarities/differences you found in the societies of the two states?

The villages in many places look similar.

  Similarities:

    Food habits    Clothing    Housing

Differences:

Some sections are more poorer in Bihar   Some are more poorer in U.P.   Govt Amenities are very meager in both the villages  Caste distinction and divisions prevail very strongly and vividly

3.      What do you think about the language and literature of the two states?

4.      What is quality of education provided in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational facilities?

Education facilities are very few.         Govt schools exist but either they are not functional and where functional with very little infrastructure   5.      What is the status of healthcare facilities and other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas of Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh?

Page 3: Questinnaires for Socio

Very minimum and nonexistent in terms of quality health care.    Pre-natal and post natal cares are at places so primitive in nature

6.      It is said that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the most backward states on India. What according to you is the reason for it? Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status?

The people there are very good.  The nature of the society is good.  I have travelled all over India.  I agree that in backwardness these states can be put.  But the reason is not the people that are so good natured there it is the POLITICAL corruption and syphoning of funds that come for development and lack of knowledge to people as to how to remove their backwardness

7.      Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states?

Heavily.  The dominating castes are almost kings without crowns in lots of places

8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more?

Crimes against Women should be more in Uttar Pradesh due to the size of the state.  But both places crimes against women prevail.  And revenge on the women folk as a form by the upper castes to teach a so called lesson to the lower castes exist.

9.      Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Where do you find more of its dominance and Why?

As long as the caste exists the hegemony will continue.  To continue the hegemony the panchayats are a form.  The inefficient delivery system of our police and judiciary perpetuates these panchayats.  If the delivery is good and on time of the POLICE system and Judiciary people will soon depend on this system than on the Panchayats that seemingly give quick fix solutions.

10.  What according to you can be done to make the societies of the two states more progressive?

 - Remove Corruption- More infrastructure development- Access to basic Amenities. - Educational facilities- Health care improved- Judiciary and POLICE in their best practicing mode

11.  What do you think is the role of today’s youth? Is it fulfilling its duties properly?

Page 4: Questinnaires for Socio

Youth is a force.  It can be utilized well if channeled well.  It can go waste if unmotivated or ill motivated for wrong purposes and can become blurred without vision.  So it needs sharpening of the vision for the youth and to motivate them.

12.  If given a chance what change would you like to bring about in your state in terms of education/ politics/ economy/ cultural aspects.    All the aspects of - Removing corruption, More Infrastructure, Educational facilities, access to basic amenities, Health Care, Speedy Judiciary, Impartial Police. The Culture of the states is good and glorious and it should be encouraged to utilize the cultural ethos of universal brotherhood and living in peace with oneself and with the cosmos.

INTERVIEW NO-                                                                    DATE OF INTERVIEW-                                                                                                  PLACE OF INTERVIEW-                                                                                                                SECTION- A 1.      NAME (Optional)– Yogesh Kumar2.      AGE – 403.      GENDER – M4.      EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION – B.Tech. / MBA5.      OCCUPATION – Service6.      MARITAL STATUS – Married7.      CHILDREN – 18.      STATE – BIHAR/UTTAR PRADESH - Uttar Pradesh                                                           SECTION –B1.      Have you visited town areas/ villages in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh? Yes2.      What were the similarities/differences you found in the societies of the two states? - Not much except variations in language. Social underpinning, structure, customs do vary but marginally.3.      What do you think about the language and literature of the two states? From Western UP to East UP and then into Bihar towards its border with Bengal, where the dialects of Hindi shifted from Khari Hindi to Maithali and Bojpuri and became softer to hear.4.      What is quality of education provided in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational facilities? - If there are proper educational facilities in rural areas then they are more chance event despite the system and not becuase of the system. There is a serious need for expanding the education net and make education more inclusive. The current political and administrative mindset of partonizing a larger set of population for electoral gains is not helping.5.      What is the status of healthcare facilities and other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas of Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? - Absolutely abysmal.6.      It is said that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the most backward states on India. What according to you is the reason for it? Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status? - Part of the answer is in my response to point 4 above. I can share that the backwardness of the two states was not that stark till about mid 80s, but then it had a very steep downward spiral in next 25 years. Example of Telco plant set up in 80s in Lucknow and then having serious issues later on.

Page 5: Questinnaires for Socio

7.      Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states? - So is the case in other states as well, with Tamilnadu being prime example, but that did not stop the state making serious strides in development. Politics in Tamilnadu is also not too different from UP and Bihar.8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more? - Cannot say with surity.9.      Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Where do you find more of its dominance and Why? - Western UP where the public mindset is still in old time, more like taliban mindset of India.10.  What according to you can be done to make the societies of the two states more progressive? - Get empowerment to local bodies - panchayats in true sense, spread education and focus on infrastructure both physical and social.11.  What do you think is the role of today’s youth? Is it fulfilling its duties properly? - Youth needs to focus on constructive activities in their local ecosystem. The challenge is if they have right people as guide and mentor.12.  If given a chance what change would you like to bring about in your state in terms of education/ politics/ economy/ cultural aspects. - Let local governing bodies have the empowerment to plan, spend and monitor the progress of infrastructure - physical and social both. Role of state and central governments should be to provide the direction only and fund appropriately. The governance should be a joint mechanism. QUESTIONNAIRE  INTERVIEW NO-                                                                    DATE OF INTERVIEW-                                                                                                  PLACE OF INTERVIEW-                                                                                                                SECTION- A 1.      NAME (Optional)– Dr. Arabind Jha2.      AGE – 58 years3.      GENDER – Male4.   EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION – MD(Medicine)                               Ph. well.

4.            What is quality of education provided in Bihar/

Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational

facilities?

Ans: Quality is the term of reference. Despite

having difficulties in basic amenities, we can say

that the foundations in basic educations are the

best in the country, thereafter, there is big

vacuum.

Educational Facilities are very poor, fundamental

needs are not being made available in Govt schools,

In private school, it’s OK, hence can be expressed

as similar in both states in Macro level.

5.            What is the status of healthcare facilities and

other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas

role in their economically backward status?

Ans: Bihar and UP are the most forward states in

terms of Politics and the most backward states in

Yes, the significant deviations in standard norms of

Society should pay attention on MSME sectors with

cultural ethics and values.

throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/

Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining

the societies of the states?

Exceptional leaders are available who have little

dominant factor on caste. CASTE equation cannot be

states do you think crimes against women is more?

Ans: In general, women do not want to have equal

Neligible % of women do like exercise their rights.

3.      GENDER – Male4.      EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION – BE5.      OCCUPATION – Mechanical Engineer6.      MARITAL STATUS – Single7.      CHILDREN – NA8.      STATE – BIHAR                                                           SECTION –B1.      Have you visited town areas/ villages in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh? YES2.      What were the similarities/differences you found in the societies of the two states? Though the similarities outweigh the differences, still there some subtle differences in culture, education & language. 3.      What do you think about the language and literature of the two states? UP has a rich literature since medieval era, in brajbhasha, khadiboli & urdu owing in part to royal patronage. Modern hindi literature, largely based on khadi boli has a huge contribution from UP overshadowing the local dialects. Bihar had a rich literature in ancient times, mainly Buddhist philosophy. But there is a gap in medieval times but for maithili. Modern literature in both standard hindi & dialects has been less prominent than UP.. 4.      What is quality of education provided in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational facilities?Quality is an issue in both states due to poor structure of education from top to bottom. Infrastructure, though important, is not the main reason for bad quality. Currently infrastructure in rural areas needs improvement but that is not THE issue today.5.      What is the status of healthcare facilities and other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas of Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Here too infrastructure needs improvement, but that is not the main reason for bad health services. There are no doctors in the health care centres in villeges. UP is slightly better than Bihar but far from good.6.      It is said that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the most backward states on India. What according to you is the reason for it? Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status? Reasons : Huge population, Bad governance, Worst hit by British exploitation, feudal system.Society & culture are also important factors. There is a lack of enterprise; caste tussles, land feuds add to the problem.7.      Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states?Identity politics is very prominent and forms the most important consideration for election. It has led to division in society on caste lines. From illiterate villagers to scholars of elite institutions, all are divided on caste lines.8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more?Status of women is bad to say the least. The middle class is worst. Poor women still get better rights as they seldom have to carry the burden of taboos in society.9.      Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Where do you find more of its dominance and Why?Not very prominent in areas I visited. Limited to solving family feuds.10.  What according to you can be done to make the societies of the two states more progressive?Education to the poorest. Land reforms. Promoting village industries. Population control. Rapid industrialization. Infrastructure development like rail/road/electricity.

Page 11: Questinnaires for Socio

11.  What do you think is the role of today’s youth? Is it fulfilling its duties properly? Biggest role is in educating the society and implementing new knowledge for development in villages. The youth is fleeing the state for more greener pastures like delhi & Bangalore for educated & surat & Punjab for daily wage earners.12.  If given a chance what change would you like to bring about in your state in terms of education/ politics/ economy/ cultural aspects. I would like to start an entrepreneurship school.

Answer: Yes

2.      What were the similarities/differences you found in the societies of the two states?     Answer: 7-8 years before, Bihar was really very backward in terms of all respects – bad politics, crime, lack of adequate infrastructures, bad governance at government offices/hospitals/education institutes etc.     Somehow UP was better in all areas of above, 7-8 years before, now it is Bihar, its remarkable change there, no bribe requires even if you want to lodge FIR.    3.      What do you think about the language and literature of the two states?

Page 12: Questinnaires for Socio

Answer: Hindi is common for both states, only difference, if you go upper part of UP e.g. Merut etc., Hindi is little blunt than other areas of two. 4.      What is quality of education provided in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational facilities?     Answer: Because good governance drives all, e.g. teacher attendance at schools etc., now it is better in Bihar at all places even better than developed states. UP will take some time to get it because still mind set of SP will take time to come out from Goons mentality 5.      What is the status of healthcare facilities and other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas of Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh?

Answer: same as 4th. (Here is doctor attendance in hospital)

 6.      It is said that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the most backward states on India. What according to you is the reason for it? Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status?

Answer: slowly image is going towards betterment at least for Bihar

 7.      Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states?     Answer: exist in both states somehow. Last election result in Bihar shows that it tried to come out from that and had voted in name of development rather to support caste politics     Unfortunately, UP didn’t have good leaders from leading parties Congress/BJP, so still it is struggling but good part they selected young people for CM, probably he can do something better than his papa. 8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more?     Answer: Yes, they are better than most developed states 9.      Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Where do you find more of its dominance and Why?     Answer: Mostly they came out for this one, it exists majorly in Haryana or upper part of UP 10.  What according to you can be done to make the societies of the two states more progressive?

Page 13: Questinnaires for Socio

Answer: focus on education to all, currently awareness level of all people are better than even developed states but unfortunately it’s not on paper (certificate) 11.  What do you think is the role of today’s youth? Is it fulfilling its duties properly?     Answer: It’s very important; they can respond to your questions/problems, take actions on any emotional cause upfront rather to keep mouth completely closed and always be diplomatic 12.  If given a chance what change would you like to bring about in your state in terms of education/ politics/ economy/ cultural aspects.     Answer: other aspects are improving; opportunity is more in economy improvement side. Cultural/education wise, these two states undoubtfully are better than many developed states.     Politics, Bihar already improved, UP didn’t have choice because of lack of leadership at biggest two parties.

QUESTIONNAIRE  INTERVIEW NO. – 01

DATE OF INTERVIEW- 07th October 2012                                                                      PLACE OF INTERVIEW- Patna                                                        SECTION- A 1.      NAME (Optional) – Mani Kant Verma2.      AGE – 31 Yrs.3.      GENDER – Male4.      EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION – MBA 5.      OCCUPATION – Banker6.      MARITAL STATUS – Married7.      CHILDREN – No8.      STATE – BIHAR SECTION –B1.      Have you visited town areas/ villages in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh? - Yes, Many-A-times.2.      What were the similarities/differences you found in the societies of the two states?

Page 14: Questinnaires for Socio

- Almost they are similar in most of manner, whether talk about behaviour, habits, traditional thought-line, Perception about outside world and others, the way they keep their surroundings.

At the same time I found differences too, in fact; in terms of Uttar Pradesh has got better industrial development in few places like: Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra etc. and better Urbanisation in Noida & Ghaziabad due to Delhi-NCR effect, these attributes bring better social life and progressive status in U.P. people in comparison to Bihar. Where you can see the difference in their day-to-day life activity because of better infrastructure in some places.

3.      What do you think about the language and literature of the two states? - In my opinion, both the state is enriched in language and literature in their own ways, having dignified history of some known veteran in this field at both places. At the same time enjoys great number of dialects with respect to region and society. But having greater impact on other part of India for being main Hindi – Spoken state. 4.      What is quality of education provided in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational facilities?- When we talk about qualitative foundational education, Bihar & U.P. definitely scores over others. But unfortunately, we somewhere lacks in qualitative and quantitative Higher Education. However, you may always feel that educational facilities are very poor and overlooked in rural areas in both the states, at the same time this has been facilitated a big industry to urban of Bihar and U.P. to make money-minting machine by opening ill-fated private schools with hardly any focus on over-all real mental growth of our kids rather only focus on make them book-worm and helping in cracking some competitive exams to excel in so called their professional life.

5.      What is the status of healthcare facilities and other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas of Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh?- Both the state is pathetic in this area, even you will not find proper healthcare infrastructure in urban Bihar and U.P., or you may say if at all a few facilities exists, which have been almost destroyed due to it’s poor maintenance as well high number of patients. Mockery of entire subject is, the private parties are making great business out of it by exploiting this poor situation of govt. run healthcare facilities at the same time, this is not helping the people as focus of these private parties are barely on quality healthcare.

6.      It is said that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the most backward states on India. What according to you is the reason for it? Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status?- In my sincere opinion, up to certain extent, Yes, but moreover, mockery of governance and mind-set of people due to ignorance or being uneducated is mainly responsible for this status.

7.      Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states?- Yes, completely, we should have to agree unanimously on the fact that Caste and Community politics is basis of our society structure and government, which had stopped progressive thought-line in the social mind-set. However, currently, we are observing slow change. Whereas, U.P. has got somehow better position in this area at few places due to urbanisation/metro effect like adjacent to Delhi-NCR and few industrial place.

8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more?- Irony is the entire India still does not accept equal rights for women in real terms, the only difference is in some developed and metro/urban part the shadow of inequality is less just because the kind of opportunity women have grabbed because of working and developmental scenario, however, Bihar & U.P. is still in greater grip of same paternal society. One of main reason, might be, in this part women did not get same opportunity to build their future and development. But, I am little bit indifferent in terms of crimes against women, as per my opinion, Bihar & U.P. is having lesser no. of such devil act, might be reason that still in Bihar & U.P. women are not enjoying social activities so freely, rather under close surveillance of their male and elders, which protect them being exposed to crimes.

9.      Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Where do you find more of its dominance and Why?- Certainly, U.P. has greater influence as per my knowledge, the reason, might be they had such kind of historical practices from which still they did not come out. However, the local government was even not effective enough to curb them due to vote bank politics.

10.  What according to you can be done to make the societies of the two states more progressive?

Page 16: Questinnaires for Socio

- Need radical change in terms of education, knowledge enrichments on subject area of Law of Land & Basic Rights, proper basic infrastructure mainly power & Healthcare, and last but not least progressive and fair mind-set of elected govt.

11.  What do you think is the role of today’s youth? Is it fulfilling its duties properly? - Not properly, reason behind may be, we are left far behind to our peers in metros and urban of other part of India, which pressurises us to focus on our career and professional growth, obviously, this leads to a situation where our participation in society became negligible. 12.  If given a chance what change would you like to bring about in your state in terms of education/ politics/ economy/ cultural aspects. - I am very strong advocator of radical change in Education and Politics, this will have bi-effect on all other subject like economy and culture slowly.

Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status?Reasons for Backwardness-Lack of quality education due to which people are misguided by politicians from Sarpanch level to MLA.Yes, nature of society plays a very important role for backwardness. Uneducated society resists to adopt any change that`s favourable for development.7.      Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states?Caste & community politics are also very dominant in Bihar as well as in UP.Yes it has played a vital role in defining the current status of the society.8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more?Status is appreciable- women are given more respect in Bihar. In urban areas equal rights are given unlike in rural areas. In UP crime against women are more.9.      Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Yes2.      What were the similarities/differences you found in the societies of the two states?        There are two Uttarpradesh, the eastern and western. Western(Area around Merrut) is completely different from that in Bihar. While eastern UP, is similar to Bihar. But overall both are divided among castes. Before Nitish, government the situation of roads in Bihar was really bad. But now it is improving. Both are agro-based states. But agro-based industries are more in UP than in Bihar. Whatever were there, are closed down like fertilizer companies, sugar mills etc...3.      What do you think about the language and literature of the two states?        The language is more or less Hindi in both states. The dialects of Bihar and eastern UP are closer. Literature wise both are rich in Hindi language. There were some great scholors in Maithili language too. If premchand is from UP, then Dinkar, and Renu is from Bihar. 4.      What is quality of education provided in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational facilities?         I have not gone to very rural area in UP. But I can say about Bihar. Before Nitish government, there was shortage of teachers in even primary schools. Now there is also shortage, but very less. And now children in village can take basic education. But for higher education for even class 12th, children have to go to at least 10 km away for school. And public transport is not that good in villages. And for college, more than 20-30 kms. But professors' shortage is there in those colleges. Only colleges in big cities like Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga have enough professors. But the education system is very bad in those colleges. There is no proper system of examination. This should be properly systemized and student must get degree in time. 5.      What is the status of healthcare facilities and other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas of Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh?         Healthcare in rural Bihar is not that OK. Although now people have started going in Public hospitals after some strict actions by Bihar govt on Doctors employed in those hospitals for not to do private practice during office hours. And also not even the basic facilities like X-Ray machines are

Page 22: Questinnaires for Socio

there in the block level hospitals. For that people have to go to private clinics.6.      It is said that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the most backward states on India. What according to you is the reason for it? Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status?          I have visited many states in India. Yeah I found them one of the backward states. The problem is the lack of education among societies. People are still in the caste politics. Higher Education system is not readily available to student residing in villages. The main problem with Bihar, I think was the government. Many industrialists from Bihar went outside, like Samprada Singh. If they will be given proper infrastructure by government, they will invest money in Bihar.  7.      Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states?8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more?9.      Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Where do you find more of its dominance and Why?10.  What according to you can be done to make the societies of the two states more progressive?11.  What do you think is the role of today’s youth? Is it fulfilling its duties properly?12.  If given a chance what change would you like to bring about in your state in terms of education/ politics/ economy/ cultural aspects.

1.      Have you visited town areas/ villages in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh? Only Uttar Pradesh towns and villages

Page 23: Questinnaires for Socio

2.      What were the similarities/differences you found in the societies of the two states? N.A. as I have only visited UP areas

3.      What do you think about the language and literature of the two states? They are almost the same with little variations as we go west to east from UP to Bihar.

4.      What is quality of education provided in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Do rural areas get educational facilities? Basic facilities are only provided and the village children are not found very keen to studies, as they are more inclined towards farming and other allied jobs. Now the trend is bit shifting from farming towards small jobs in metros / bigger towns where earning is a bit more secure and constant unlike the farming activity as it is solely dependent on the climatic conditions, i.e. say out of 3 crops they could earn in one of them and the other two are not profitable, with overall profit very meagre amount. As far as the education aspect, the development in the education system is still very slow paced in the villages, lack in basic facilities in the primary schools, few far-fetched higher secondary schools are there. Whereas in towns the schooling facilities, as far as I believe, are amongst the best in India. UP & Bihar are producing so many bureaucrats / professionals. Where ever you go in UP/Bihar, however small the town is, you will find schools which are good when compared to other towns of say MP, Maharashtra, Gujarat, etc. In IITs we used to see guys from Bihar would come in small numbers but they would occupy the top seats in CS, EE, ME and upto Chemical, you would rarely see a student coming from Bihar getting seats in the lower half departments. Same is the case with UP, where most of the aspirants prepare for administrative exams with very good schooling backgrounds.

5. What is the status of healthcare facilities and other basic amenities in the rural and urban areas of Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? This is an issue in both Urban and rural areas. Rural areas presently lack basic grass root level facilities with regards to healthcare and basic amenities. The socio political picture of these two states have always been not to provide any basic facilities to the poorer section and maintain a gap between them, then only they can rule these states. They always believed in getting forced voting and thought if these junta gets elevated w.r.t. basic amenities like infrastructure, education, status, etc then they might not vote for them. Most of the Urban areas still lack in basic amenities and healthcare facilities and if some of these places do have then the staff would not be available to cater to the people. When compared to other states we are far far below their standards. Healthcare in these two states have been looked as business so far.

6. It is said that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the most backward states on India. What according to you is the reason for it? Does the nature of society of Bihar/Uttar Pradesh play any role in their economically backward status? As iterated in the point 5, the socio political background and their behaviour has been more responsible for this factor in these two states. Due to this belief in ‘Danda Vote’ the politicians never want the basic infrastructure of these two states to grow and the people to become educated and independent. They always want the junta to be under their shoes.

Page 24: Questinnaires for Socio

7. Caste and community politics is dominant throughout India. What is its standing in Bihar/ Uttar Pradesh? Does it play a major role in defining the societies of the states? Caste politics is very much dominant in UP as far as I had seen. The two dominant political parties in this state are trying all efforts to have hold on the minorities like SC/ST, Muslims, etc. Only for the vote banks these politicians are drawing lines between these castes and try to cause discrimination between them. Leaving this factor aside, otherwise the caste discrimination in the society is diminishing fast in the current days. Caste factor, in earlier times, used to be a key factor in these two states, but not now, except during the election times.

8.      What is status of Women in Bihar/Uttar Pradesh? Are they given equal rights? In which of the two states do you think crimes against women is more? These two states still have the male dominant society and the women are still not thought off to go out for jobs or earnings. The education part has a bit eased of now but a women going for job is still a question of debate in the families. No equality is there for Men and Women in these two states. Still it is believed in the majority of the sections here that the men would go out and earn for the family and Women would remain in house, produce children and raise them. Crimes against women is higher in these two states with may be Bihar on the upper edge (as heard off primarily in movies, etc), but off-late the cases in UP has come into media more than the cases in Bihar. But without any doubts these states are still not suitable for women feel secure during their stay out of their houses. Women in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra would never feel insecure moving out in any part of the day or even nights, but here you never expect ladies to remain out even after evening hours, say after 07:00 PM.

9. Khap Panchayat is a major social issue today. Where do you find more of its dominance and Why? It seems more dominant in UP and that too in the western belt of UP. May be due to the society prevailing there.

10.  What according to you can be done to make the societies of the two states more progressive? Infrastructure to be improved drastically in these two states and awareness is a key factor to make these two states more progressive. Awareness in the sense, people should be made aware of their basic rights and they should start demanding the same from their government, politicians.

11.  What do you think is the role of today’s youth? Is it fulfilling its duties properly? Today’s youth are correctly heading towards the growth line. They are more aware and are demanding their rights and try to make the country free from old shackles of corruption, wrong doings. They are choosing their leaders more judiciously and keep a tab on the happenings.

12.  If given a chance what change would you like to bring about in your state in terms of education/ politics/ economy/ cultural aspects. Education – the rural education should be more thrusted upon and I would like better education facilities in the villages with better teachers who are more serious about their job in teaching rather than pocketing the ‘afternoon meal rations’.

Page 25: Questinnaires for Socio

Politics – More youths, with broader mind sets,  should come out and try to form part of the political system. They should believe to uplift the infrastructure and standard of livings in the states, votes would then rather automatically flow, rather than seeking power and money to extract ‘danda power votes’.Economy   – The basic infrastructure has to be raised fast in these two states. Bigger projects, industries, SEZ needs to be set up with protection to their earnings in these states.
