Nature of Science_2018.notebook 1 June 06, 2018 Welcome to Science Day 1 On a piece of looseleaf, write your name and today's date. I will be asking you to ponder a few questions today and I want you to make ever attempt to think like a Scientist as you reflect and as you communicate your thoughts on paper. Ponderings are NOT tests; they are things to wonder about. And even though some answers are more correct than others, don't worry about not knowing. We're all here to learn right? Focus on thinking. For now, don't discuss your ideas with others ‐ we'll do that later. Question 1: A kid in Grade 3 comes up to you and asks, "What's Science?". How would you explain what Science is to this kid? (Remember, you're thinking like a Scientist who wouldn't say, "It's everything."). Question 2: If everything is made up of matter ("stuff" or more scientifically let's call it "mass"), and matter cannot be created nor destroyed but only transformed, then where does the mass come from to transform this acorn into a massive oak tree? Question 3: Let's face it, humans know a great deal about a whole bunch of things. Just think how our understanding of our world has changed over time! But how do Scientists do that? What is the process they use for adding to our knowledge and understanding of our world and universe? What is special about how we know things because of Science? Ok...So answers for Questions 1 and 3 are not simple and will be explored in more detail over the next several days. But let's get at least ONE questioned answered... Click on picture

Welcome to ScienceDay 1 On a piece of looseleaf, write your name and today's date.

Question 1:A kid in Grade 3 comes up to you and asks, "What's Science?". How would you explain what Science is to this kid? (Remember, you're thinking like a Scientist who wouldn't say, "It's everything.").

Question 2:If everything is made up of matter ("stuff" or more scientifically let's call it "mass"), and matter cannot be created nor destroyed but only transformed, then where does the mass come from to transform this acorn into a massive oak tree?

Question 3:Let's face it, humans know a great deal about a whole bunch of things.

So let's go back Question 1 ~ Day 1 "What's Science?"The answer to that question can take a person on a massive and time consuming quest to sort through all the available literature and find a way to put it into terms that make sense for you...

What's  ?It's 2 things really:1) a body of knowledge (based on     evidence!) that has been acquired     over time that helps us better     understand the natural world.

Scientific knowledge is about degrees of probability rather than absolute certainty.

For example, Newton's Theory of Gravity has been around for a few hundred years. On this planet, the probability is virtually 100% that when you jump off a cliff, gravity will pull you down. And yet, until you actually observe the falling, there is always room for this theory to be disproved. Because it's been tested SO often, with the same predicted result, we accept it as "truth".

It's safe to say, that we accept many theories in this same way ~ as "true". Until evidence is provided that disproves them, they provide the most reliable foundation of knowledge on which to develop new ways to fight diseases, feed humanity, explore space, adapt to climate change, and invent new technologies.

What's  ?And the second thing:2) It's a PROCESS with rules that must    be followed or it's not science.

explanation must be based on careful observations/inferences.

It's safe to say, that we accept many theories in this same way. Until evidence is provided that disproves them, they provide the most reliable knowledge we have about the natural world.

explanation (hypothesis) must be tested and it must be possible to disprove.other scientists must be able to replicate the results or observations. Conclusions must be scrutinized by other experts in the field.  (PEER REVIEW)

Step by step Scientific Method??

"if my answer is correct, I should see..."

3 possible outcomes of prediction:1) Prediction right (explanation becomes stronger over time.

With enough supporting evidence, may become Theory)

3) Prediction wrong (explanation abandoned over time)

2) Prediction partially right (explanation becomes modified  over time)

Observation versus Inference...

INFERENCES are interpretations or explanations of what's observed.

OBSERVATIONS are made using your 5 senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing).

More practice...

Watch what your brain does with this one...

Test your ability to observe what's going on with a fancy card trick...

Observations often lead to a question.

The nature of the brain is to attempt to come up with an answer to a question you've given it.

A hypothesis is an educated prediction to what the answer to the question will be.

Let's practice...

Now that we've tackled observation, let's move on to the next important step in the cycle of Scientific Thinking...

Are dark circles under the eyes caused by lack of sleep?

Is there a connection between eating bacon and getting cancer?

Will holding your breath get rid of hiccups?
