QUESTION 2:HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA

PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

THE SHOT TYPE I HAVE USED IS ‘PORTRAIT’, TAKEN ON A DIGITAL SINGLE LENS REFLEX CAMERA.

MY FRONT COVER.

The model on my front cover shows a dominant representation of:

Young, mixed-race males. He’s wearing informal apparel...- Hooded sweaters, t shirts, baseball caps, baggy jeans. Jewellery and piercings - connote a desire to look ‘in fashion’.- conform to fashion within society. Smoking connotes that the model has ill regard for his health.- May be using cigarettes as a tool to look more attractive to peers and readers.- It displays a bad attitude- respected by rap/hip hop lovers. Led to believe that he may be unemployed, as he has little respect for the

presentation of his attire.- He is not looking at the camera, which connotes a lack of respect and a tone of

arrogance. He is not wearing make up to enhance the image, the lighting is natural.

THE IMAGE WAS CAPTURED USING THE ‘PORTRAIT’ FUNCTION ON A DSLR CAMERA. THE LIGHTING IS NATURAL- FLASH REMAINED UNUSED. LOCATION WAS CHOSEN TO REFLECT DOMINANT REPRESENTATION

OF YOUNG, MIXED-RACE, RAP/HIP HOP LOVING TEENS. GRAFFITI WAS NOT ADDED- USED THE COINCIDENCE TO MY

ADVANTAGE. THE GRAFFITI, MODEL, MODEL’S ATTIRE AND POSE WERE

DELIBERATELY ASSEMBLED TO STEREOTYPE THE DOMINANT IDEOLOGY OF TEENS OF HIS DESCRIPTION.

MY CONTENTS PAGE.

The model on my contents page displays a dominant representation of:

Young, mixed-race females. Wearing a modern-styled t shirt, a hooded sweater, and a baseball cap. Her style represents a growing majority of young females in the UK- Caps and hooded sweaters are very much in fashion.- Unisex items of clothing. She is stood amongst trees in a wooded area- which contrasts to the dominant representation of young, female, mixed-race

teens.- Usually associated with being located in more urban areas. - This element rebels against the stereotypical teen featured previously. She is not wearing make-up. The lighting is natural.- She is smiling, however not looking at the camera. - Her hand is placed on her hip.- Connotes power, dominance, arrogance and high self-worth.

THE IMAGE WAS CAPTURED USING A DSLR CAMERA AND ‘PORTRAIT’ FUNCTION, IN ORDER TO FOCUS ON THE MODEL, AND INTENTIONALLY BLUR THE BACKGROUND SOMEWHAT.

THE LIGHTING IS NATURAL, THUS MEANING THAT THE FLASH REMAINED UNUSED.

LOCATION SIMILAR TO THAT USED ON THE FRONT COVER. DELIBERATELY INTERLINKS NATURE WITH URBAN FASHION AND

RAP/HIP HOP MUSIC, DEFEATING THE DOMINANT IDEOLOGY OF A STEREOTYPICAL YOUNG, MIXED-RACE TEEN.

THE COLOUR SCHEME OF HER ATTIRE (THUS BEING BLACK, RED, GREY AND WHITE) IS AIMED TO CONNOTE POWER AND DOMINANCE.

THE COLOURS ARE BOLD, AND FREQUENTLY USED WITHIN THE RAP/HIP HOP GENRE.

MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

The model on my double-page spread portrays a dominant representation of:

Young, male, mixed-race teens. Smoking a cigarette.- Connotes a disregard for his health.- Used as a tool to look attractive. Staring directly into the camera.- Connotes power, arrogance and dominance. The graffiti surrounding him connotes a lack of respect.- Vandalism.- Crime.

THE IMAGE WAS SHOT AT THE SAME LOCATION FEATURED ON THE FRONT COVER OF MY MAGAZINE.

IT SHOWS THE SAME MODEL I HAVE USED ON THE FRONT COVER OF MY MAGAZINE.

THE TITLE OF THE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD ‘GETTIN’ THE LOW DOWN FROM...THE BIG DADDY’ FEATURES INFORMAL ELEMENTS WHICH RELATE TO THE MUSIC GENRE: RAP/HIP HOP.

THE TITLE IS BLACK, BOLD, AND USES PUNCTUATION SUCH AS APOSTROPHES TO REPLACE LETTERS, IN THIS CASE BEING ‘G.’

AGAIN, A DSLR CAMERA WAS USED. THE FLASH REMAINED UNUSED, AND THE LIGHTING WAS NATURAL. OVERALL, IT DEPICTS A STEREOTYPICAL, DOMINANT

REPRESENTATION OF A YOUNG, MIXED-RACE MALE WHO IS INTERESTED IN HIP HOP/RAP MUSIC, AND THE ELEMENTS THAT SURROUND IT, SUCH AS FASHION.

THE TITLE OF MY MAGAZINE...

DESCRIBES THE ORIGINAL BEAT-PRODUCING MACHINE CREATED FOR USE BY RAP/HIP HOP ARTISTS. IT IS BOLD, WHITE AND I HAVE USED AN INFORMAL FONT. THE FONT IS ROUGHLY CREATED, DISPLAYS FRAYS WHERE THE COLOUR RUNS OUT OF THE LINES. IT IS DELIBERATELY INTENDED TO RESEMBLE GRAFFITI, WHICH CONNOTES INFORMALITY, AN ELEMENT OF CRIME, WHICH LEADS TO ANARCHIC MOTIVES. IT IS A STEROTYPICAL, DOMINANT REPRESENTATION OF WHAT PEOPLE (AGED BETWEEN 15 AND 24) WOULD APPRECIATE AND ASSOCIATE WITH HIP HOP/RAP.

THE LAYOUT OF MY MAGAZINE COVER, CONTENTS PAGE, AND DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD IS SIMPLY ASSEMBLED, USING BOLD, BLOCK-

COLOUR FONTS AND CAPTIONS/IMAGES THAT DO NOT FEATURE BLEEDS OVER TEXT OR THE SIDE OF THE PAGE, IN ORDER TO ENSURE

A CLEAN, CRISP LAYOUT.

THE CONTENT OF MY MAGAZINE FEATURES INTERVIEWS, STYLE TIPS AND FASHION, HIP HOP/RAP NEWS, PULL-OUT

POSTERS AND CONTROVERSIAL DEBATES REGARDING MUSIC STARS.
