Section-A

Q1.Read the passage and answer the given questions.

The puppet master was not really a wicked master. He let both the puppets go. Not only that, he also gave Pinocchio five gold coins for his old father Geppetto, when he heard his story. Now, did Pinocchio take these coins to Geppetto immediately? No, the silly little puppet that he was, he got into more and more mischief and trouble due to the coins. A kind fairy saved Pinocchio from the robbers who had caught Pinocchio for the coins. But when the fairy asked Pinocchio about the coins, he lied to her. But then, a strange thing happened. The moment Pinocchio told a lie, his nose grew longer. With every lie, it grew longer and longer. Pinocchio was really frightened. He asked the fairy to forgive him and promised never to tell lies again. Pinocchio did not learn to tell the truth or listen to the good advice of his friends and his father and the fairy easily. So, at the end of a number of adventures, do you know where he found himself?At the bottom of the sea ! And there, he was swallowed by a big shark that was one mile long. Poor Pinocchio! Now at last, he was truly sorry for all the foolish things that he had done. But once you get into a difficulty, it’s not very easy to get out of it. However, inside the stomach of the shark. Pinocchio saw a faint light. When he went near the light, surprise of surprises! He found Geppetto ! Geppetto had been worried about Pinocchio since he had left home. Tie had searched for Pinocchio far and wide. During the search, the shark had swallowed the ship on which Geppetto was travelling! With great effort and courage, Pinocchio took himself and Geppetto out of the shark’s stomach. He carried Geppetto back to the shore. After that, Pinocchio really proved to be a good boy. He began to work very hard to help Geppetto. When he heard that the fairy was ill, he sent her all the money that he was saving for himself. And then to his joy and amazement, he found that he had turned into a real boy!

Pakhi hurried to her table in the school cafeteria. She could not wait to see what was in her lunch bag. Her mother had told Pakhi to expect a surprise for lunch. ‘It must be a really big surprise, Pakhi told her friend Tanya. My lunch bag feels very heavy’. ‘Hurry’,Tanya said. ‘Let's see your surprise’. Pakhi quickly put her hand in the bag and pulled out an apple. She looked surprised. ‘Why did Mummy give me an apple? She knows I like sandwiches’. Pakhi put her hand in the bag again and this time she brought out a packet of tomato and cheese sandwiches. ‘Wow! It was a muffin, a cherry muffin. ‘It's a magic lunch bag’ Tanya said excitedly. ‘Let me try’. She put her hand in the bag and said, ‘I like chocolate cake’. But what she pulled out was a cup of fruit yoghurt. ‘I don't like yoghurt. Do you like it?’ Tanya asked. ‘No, I don't’, Pakhi replied. Just then someone called her name. She looked up and started laughing. ‘But my mother likes apples and yoghurt’. She waved to her mother who had come to visit her at lunch. That was Pakhi's special surprise.

Q4. Read the passage and answer the given questions. Early in May a man came from Squire Gordon's place to take me away. My master said, “Good-bye, Darkie; be a good horse, and always do your best.” I touched his head lovingly with my wet nose. He patted me on the neck and touched the white mark on my forehead; I left my first home. Squire Gordon's Park lay just inside the village of Birtwick. There was a large iron gate and a smooth road leading to the Squire's house and gardens. Behind this lay the stables. My stable was very roomy. A large window opened into the yard and that made it airy and pleasant. It had a low shelf for hay and corn. My room was called a loose box, because the horse in it could move about freely. The groom, John Manly, put me into this fine box. He gave me some very nice oats, patted me, spoke kindly and went away.

When I had eaten my corn, I looked round. In the next box stood a little fat

grey pony, with a thick mane and tail and a very pretty head. I put my head

up to the top of my box and said “How do you do? What is your name?”
