In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and convention of real media products?

As a group we have researched into different genres in order to understand the codes and convention of thriller genre. During our research we have found out different conventions and elements that make a thriller genre. This helped us as it increased our knowledge about our chosen genre and it gave us an understanding of what a thriller trailer is supposed to look like and which conventions should be followed in order to create a thriller genre. This helped us as we were able to use the codes and convention and apply to our trailer. One particular trailer we liked was the ‘Devil trailer’. We were inspired with this trailer; this is because it gave us a sense of how to attract the audience and how each macro element was important for the trailer in order to convey the genre to the audience. This is something that we achieved in our trailer by using the conventions required in a thriller trailer.

We believe that our trailer is very clear in terms of what genre it is. We have established that by the using the codes and conventions of thriller trailers and micro elements.

Camera types

In terms of the camera work we used the typical conventions of a thriller genre, such as we used close ups to establish the characters and the portmanteau genre. Also in my trailer I gave used variety of shots and angles this is because we want to convey the thriller convention and to create an eerie as well as sinister atmosphere. The shots types that I used are in conjunction with the sound. Towards the end of my trailer there is a quick sequence of shots edited as fast pace. This is because to attract the audience and leave enough ambiguity to make the audience

interested in watching the film.

Editing

Page 2: Question1

The editing in our trailer starts off slowly and then gradually the pace of the editing increases. This is a typical convention used in a thriller trailer. This connotes that we conformed to using the typical convention of a thriller genre. Also the fast pace editing builds tension and suspense,

we this by using jump cuts which was towards the end of the trailer.

The use of credits are very significant in our trailer, due to the research we found out that credit helps to tell the narrative this was something that we tried to emulate on our trailer. Also the the use of credits breaks down the narrative for the audience. In order for them to understand what the trailer is about. Also we used rhetorical questions which are targeted towards the audience. This shows that our trailer is creating a relationship with the audience. One element that we used for marketing and promotion is that we used the credit “From the makers of Identity” Most film do this in order to attract the film fans and the directors fan. This was something that we tried to achieve, as our film trailer is similar the identity trailer. We have also to way in which the titles and the credit are positioned. For most trailers the title is at the end of the trailer, this is what we achieved in our trailer. This is because it is easy for the audience to remember the name.

sound The sound that we used for our trailer is created by us and some of online copyright music. We believe that music is very essential in thriller genre, so we layered our different kind of music together in order to convey the thriller genre. We also tried to link the music with the shots, such as when the intertitles appears we used a different kind of music, this could be considered as a sound motif for the text. I have used non diegetic sound of the dialogues with black screen, this is conventional in thriller genre this shows that we used real media text to help us create our trailer. Towards the end the the tempo of the music. This is something that film institution do in order to create a sinister atmosphere. This is what we tried to achieve as we believe that the silence can be very effective at times.

Mise en sceneThe location of our trailer was mostly based around isolated and conventional setting of a thriller genre. The the location that we used are a bus, lift, house and a empty room. By using isolated locations like the lift creates a sense of fear and danger, we were inspired by the devil trailer. Another way we created a sense of danger is by the use of lighting. In our trailer we have used low key lighting, this is because we wanted to show establish the thriller genre to the audience. . Also the use of low key lighting provides a sinister look. This mean we conform to the convention that you would expect to see in the thriller genre.

Lighting location

PropsIn our trailer we used props to establish the portmanteau thriller genre, prop are key

iconography which helps the audience to identify the genre of the trailer

CharactersThese are the typical conventions of film trailers. By looking at different film trailers helped us identify the codes and convention which applied it to our trailer. We challenged the conventions of a typical thriller genre by having one of the male characters as the victim as well as the female characters. This is because stereotypically males are dominant, however in our trailer we have equalised the both genders. This shows that we have challenged the typical conventions.

Page 4: Question1

NarativeMy trailer follows the typical narrative structure and links with the Levi-Strauss Theory such as Binary opposition which involves Good VS Evil. For instance in our trailer the good people or the characters in the trailer and evil person is the black figure. This shows that we conformed to using the typical use of narrative structure in our trailer.

our trailer conforms to most of the codes of conventions that you would expect to see in a thriller genre. This is a very successful genre and the audience can easily recognize the conventions for this genre. Our trailer largely follows these conventions and is successful in providing key features that are also seen in major blockbuster films.
