In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

MALEFICENT- Marketing Campaign

Maleficent was an example I had researched when I was looking at marketing campaigns. I chose this film as it had connections to our initial idea for our teaser trailer, therefore we developed forms this teaser trailer used for our own media products. This example demonstrates how the company ident is presented, with the design linking to the genre of the film, compared to the original design. The conventions of an ident is to have a black background, a bold text, usually in white and a visual graphic. This ident also appears in the trailer at the beginning for 3 seconds.

From researching and analyzing the conventions used in real media products, as a group we developed our own ideas to include into our teaser trailer. Firstly, the company ident representation is appeared a the beginning. We decided to use the prop of a mirror, in a result to show the simplicity as well as the connection to the genre of our film. As Maleficent uses the Disney ident, Disney is typically known for the younger audience of an age range between 5-12. therefore we decided to follow this idea. The mirror is also an iconic prop which appears in Disney films, for example, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. As from out ident research PowerPoint, more ident designs were displayed on a black background, meaning we also did this. We also chose to colour the font in white with a grey tint to it, to fit with the grey framed mirror.

Maleficent film title is displayed at the end of the teaser trailer for approximately 5 seconds. This has also been animated with an effective transition with it zooming out from the letter ‘F’ which is the middle of the title, as it pans out it places in the middle contrasted with a black background. This film has designed their title to suit the genre of their film as well as the personality of the main character.

This film has designed their title to suit the genre of their film as well as the personality of the main character.

From relating back to the Maleficent title, they had designed it to suit the genre of the film and the personality of the main character. Therefore from our film title research, such as ‘The princes diaries’ they used a posh, handwritten inspired style, to suit the royalty theme. Therefore as our film used royalty elements, we decided that this would worked effectively, continuing on fitting with the genre of our film. We also decided to design the font to reflect on the words in which we titled our film. Meaning we chose a simple and possibly boring font to reflect ‘Plain’ and a sophisticated and formal handwritten font for ‘Jayne’. This technique also challenges the product of the film also named ‘Plain Jayne’ that does this method.

Lastly for this example, for the last 2 shots, it presents the main character for a quick 2 seconds using montage editing. The shot used is a close up shot, focusing on the eyes of the character. This worked effectively as it introduces the character to the audience without giving to much detail away. The connotation of the shot of an eye is that it demonstrates a relationship building with the audience.

At the end of our teaser trailer, we were inspired by the shot used in Maleficent, of using a close up of the main character at the end of the trailer. We decided to shoot from a birds eye angle and the main character looked up directly in the camera, in an effect to provide a strong relationship between the character and audience. This shot is effective as it leaves the audience to know more about the character and about their story. We developed the conventions of this as we used a different way of frame of the shot, as well as to develop our genre further.

SUBMARINE – Marketing Campaign

The second marketing campaign in which as a group we looked at was the quirky independent film ‘Submarine’. We decided that Submarine was close of what our film linked with the synopsis of our character. Therefore Submarine was a large sector of influencing in the creation of our work. We mainly looked at the full length trailer as they did not have a teaser trailer. However this demonstrated a range of conventions which we could include. The first being text appearing to hint the synopsis. This shot demonstrates use of a typewriter style appearing on the screen, with a dark blue background. This is a convention for teaser trailers to hint a slight aspect of the storyline.

From looking at the marketing campaign and textually analyzing Submarine in detail, we intended to add in titles to separate the visual shots. This also made the synopsis of our story clear and easier to understand without giving to much away. We did this by presenting a few shots between each title. We illustrated the title by dividing the sequence into three sections, for example ‘Stage 1; research’, This portrays a puzzle included into the teaser trailer, for the audience to question the plot. We have used the typewriter style which we animated to appear on shot. This worked effectively as majority of our shots are of the character using a laptop. The theme of the title, is of a black background and white background, this is used for all these type of titles, to keep a continuity throughout.

The second screen shot I decided to demonstrate is the use of magazine or newspaper reviews displaying within the trailer. It uses a different theme of background, font and the layout in order to differentiate from the other titles. This shot is on screen for 4 seconds to ensure that the audience is able to read the review. They also use a different font for the title of the newspaper, in a result to follow the rights of the company, but to also clearly iconize the newspaper as the audience will recognize them.

We decided to display our film reviews differently from real media products in order to challenge the existing products. We did this by displaying all the reviews on one frame and edited in a way for it to appear one after the other. We also decided to keep with a frame that we had already shot, with the composition of the character and posters of London. We did this as we really liked the shot as it was unique and gave the impression of an unusual atmosphere, however it didn’t work on its own, meaning we added the reviews on top. We also chose magazines and newspapers that fitted with the genre of our film. Therefore following the younger teen audience, we selected ‘Seventeen magazine’ and ‘Bliss’ as we felt this followed the target audience. Lastly we chose the ‘Daily Mail’ as it reflected the development of our research from submarine as they use this type of aspect.

This shot acted as an iconic shot as it presented the main character to be in a mid shot, meaning the audience has a full view of what the personality and behavior would be from the body language and facial expression. Therefore from our research on submarine we intended to include a similar shot. The effect of using a black background enables the audience to directly look to the character without distractions, this is along with a simple shot with no camera movements. This shot also appeared with the character speaking about his life, which worked effectively in giving a diary inspired theme to the film.

This shots primarily reflects on the idea of presenting our main character in a mid shot demonstrating the body language and facial expression to highlight the key features of the character. We challenged this by comparing to submarines shot of this, as we added in more movement and actions involved, although keeping with the similarities by using a voiceover to add. This shot worked really well in portraying the quirkiness from the added effects of a faster pace. This editing technique is also in majority of our shots. We dressed the character in a red dress, to reflect on the connotation of royalty, as well as danger, which relates to our film tagline ‘will she take it one step too far…”.

The last shot which was effective was the ending credits which appeared at the end of the trailer. We had research other trailers, such as ‘Into the Woods’ which also used this convention. Submarine used a red background with white writing font, similarly to the shot for the reviews. This effect the continuity of theme and how to successfully market their film, with the colour scheme of blue and red. The ending credit presented is of the billing block which is also presented on the film poster. It uses a different layout, in order to fill the shot, with furthering enlarging the font for the audience to read. This also enables the audience to notice possible well known stars, which acts as an effective persuasive way of marketing.

This frame connects to the research on billing blocks and how we intended to present them into our teaser trailer and poster. We decided to also incorporate the coming soon into this, as we thought this would work better, mostly effecting the billing block. From developing this further, we related to Submarine for the theme in which we would present this. We decided to use a red background, as this would again reflect the royalty to it, in contrast with a white font. This would also make the writing clear to read. The red background differentiates from the stage 1 texts, which also develop further from Submarine.

MALEFICENT POSTER Relating back to the marketing campaign, I also looked at the poster that was created. This demonstrates how the market the significance of the character and to incorporate important key aspects to symbolise the film. For this poster they edited other images to emerge on top. For example they have the picture of sleeping beauty with the three fairies blended within the main character. This is an effective way of presenting more than one key images of their film rather than surrounding the image. It has a white background which contrasts well to the main image, as It makes it stand out clearer.

The key conventions for a film poster, includes the title of the film. This is presented in the middle of the page, with the production company alongside it. This is the same font and design which is used in the teaser trailer. This assists the marketing and visual icon for the film. Another convention for a film poster is to have a well known celebrity name. This is usually for a popular celebrity as the audience will expect it is a good film. Therefore for this poster, they have titled ‘Angelina Jolie’ to be presented above the film title, to also suggest she is the main character. The poster also uses a convention of using a tagline to hint to he audience what the story synopsis is. For this film they have used the tagline of ‘discover the story you never knew’. They have presented this in block capitals for it to stand out alongside the remaining text. The other remaining text which are conventions for a film poster is to have an original billing block, which can be made up with using 4 lines. this is used with the font ‘Steel Tongs’. The billing blocks include text about who the director is, producer s, art directors, designers and stars. Lastly the poster also presents when the film is coming out, which usually either gives a specific date, or titles it ‘in cinemas soon’.

SUBMARINE POSTER

As submarine was a key example for our research, during the preparation and making of our film poster, we regularly reflected back onto Submarine’s poster to gather ideas purely on layout. Submarine contrasted to the Maleficent poster, as they designed their poster to be landscape. They also used less image and more text to their poster, however they managed to keep it interesting and eye-catching for the audience. The colour scheme is an important factor as it effects the marketing campaign to the film. Therefore they have chosen the main colours to be red, blue and yellow, in which appears throughout their package. As this is an independent film, they still have the actors who appear. This works well as it gives recognition and supports the independent genre to it. The font used for the reviews are quirky and also supports the genre. It demonstrates a unique way of how to present the film title, which can be different to what is presented in the teaser trailer, however it has been used to fi the design of the genre and design of the poster. Lastly the comparison between the Maleficent poster, the text of the billing block and the production company name is dramatically smaller, allowing more space for other elements.

OUR FINAL POSTER

This is our final poster in which we came up with after researching many posters relating to the genre and synopsis to our film. From looking at posters such as, The Princes Diaries, Submarine and Maleficent. We decided to keep with the same font used that appears in the teaser trailer, as this is an independent film, we felt this would assist more in marketing. We also included the red crown to blend into the wall which is directly above the royalty inspired costume of the main character. For our main image we chose to display to images of our main character, in two different appearances. This was to demonstrate the street style in comparison to the British and royal side, in a result to show her two personalities and lifestyle. Therefore throughout our poster, we continued this by comparing the brick wall as the background image, alongside the black silhouette of a London skyline. We wanted to keep with the design of making it look independent, therefore we were inspired by the Submarine layout and design. We made sure to include the tagline which is the same for our teaser trailer, however we challenged the Maleficent design by placing it on the far right of the poster. This was to fill the space and to keep text looking similar. We used the film reviews similarly to the Submarine, with also adding a yellow, as this linked well with looking quirky and independent. Lastly we designed the London silhouette to blend in with the billing block with adding text features surrounding it. We added the names of who created these above the billing block as we wanted the recognition from the audience, as well as highlighting the production company.

MALEFICENT MAGAZINE COVERLastly from the Maleficent marketing campaign we looked at the magazine cover and its conventions. We decided to use Total film, as it uses a range of films to present on the cover of their magazine which aim well to ours. This magazine shows a brief and simple magazine cover with some conventions. For example they have presented the magazine masthead, keeping with the same font style. It also as a small feature of a circle of stars with text within titling ‘the worlds best movie reviews’. As well as the date, issue and price of this magazine.

From my research, total film used a theme for their magazine to suit the film in which the character is from. Therefore for Maleficent, they have used a grey toned blue background with also icy blue coloured fonts. This is contrast to white coloured fonts. They have highlighted key words, such as the film title and ‘blockbuster’ to make these bolder to read and to focus the importance. It uses brief text to layer on top of the main image, with website links and other films included in the magazine on the left side of the cover.

OUR FINAL MAGAZINE COVERThis is the result of our final magazine cover. Starting from the top of the magazine, we kept with the original magazine masthead, with the same font and features. The background image is inspired by ‘the princess diaries’ with a red royal wallpaper inspired theme. The colour red is a highlighted theme which is presented throughout our package. It also contrasts well against the white fonts. This magazine covers demonstrates the challenge of adding more conventions than to the maleficent magazine cover, as we have added more text with following similar methods. For example with highlighting key words, such as, mirror, new, 2015 and London, to connote importance. From researching and comparing other magazine covers , we gathered lots of ideas and planned a layout that combined all conventions of a magazine cover. For example, the bottom of the cover we have a visual sequence of student made projects. We did this to show our own work, rather than use existing products. We mixed the font styles, to keep it interesting, such as making it bold, italic or placed behind a black box. Lastly on text, we changed the font for the film title, to link to the magazine rights. We also felt that we portrayed the genre of film effectively and decided that the title would take this away.

The main image of the character is similar to the poster, with the impression of emerging two appearance together. However for this we have minimized it down so it is one complete image of her. Overall I think we have developed further to create an effective magazine cover which challenged the magazine cover for Maleficent as we added more conventions, such as text and visual graphics.
