Questions On God's Character And Identity

    Page 1

Question 1. In Genesis 1:26 God says "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness

What does God mean when he says "us"? Let us make man in our image. Who is "us"?

    Previous Question Top Next Question

Answer Who was God speaking to in Genesis 1:26-27? Was He speaking to angels or other

heavenly beings? Was He speaking to Himself? Why is the plural employed in this passage?

    First, let's read the passage:

GEN 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and

let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over

all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

    GEN 1:27 And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him;

male and female He created them.

Now, to whom is God speaking? Some have said that He is speaking to angels or some other

heavenly beings in His presence. The problem here is, why does He say that He would createman in "our" image? Then, in verse 27, it says that we are created in God's image.

We are unique because, unlike all of God's creation, we have been made in His image, not the

image of angels, animals or any other beings. We have a kinship directly related to God. We

possess spiritual characteristics that allow us to be aware of ourselves, make conscious

decisions and have dominion over the animals and earth. No, God was not speaking to angels

or any other created heavenly beings.

Was God speaking to Himself? If He was, then why did the writer use the plural instead ofthe singular? Certainly, in most every instance where one is talking to himself, there is no

    need for the plural.

The obvious, but to some degree, hard to grasp answer is, God is speaking to others who

possess the qualities of God. That is, He is speaking to Jesus and the Holy Spirit. There arethree that have the attributes of Deity, possess the Divine Nature. They agree as one in

purpose and action, but they are three distinct beings who play different roles in the Divinework of creation and salvation. Some other passages in Genesis help us understand that there

is more than one being who is God.

GEN 3:22 Then the Lord God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing

good and evil; and now, lest he stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, andeat, and live forever"--

GEN 3:23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the

ground from which he was taken.

GEN 3:24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the

cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every direction, to guard the way to the tree of

    life.

GEN 11:6 And the Lord said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same

language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will

    be impossible for them.

GEN 11:7 "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may notunderstand one another's speech."

GEN 11:8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and

    they stopped building the city.

Then, in the New Testament, the picture becomes even clearer as all three are clearly

identified in various passages. Just as man and woman are two distinct beings who possesses

the image of God, so there are three distinct beings that possess the Divine qualities that

    make them God.

MAT 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to

Me in heaven and on earth.

MAT 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name

of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

MAT 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with youalways, even to the end of the age. "

JOH 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will

teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you

Question 1. where in the Bible does it mention about God's omniscience? specific verses

would be appreciated. I realized that the word 'omniscience' is not used in the bible.

    Previous Question Top Next Question

Answer o, you are right. This word is not in the Bible, although the concept is. As we looks

at the nature of God revealed in the Bible, it is clear that He is the ultimate Power, Wisdom

and Knowledge behind the Universe. To claim to understand completely the character of

God, would be a vain affirmation.

ROM 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! Howunsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!

ROM 11:34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor?ROM 11:35 Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again?

ROM 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory

    forever. Amen.

Although God is all-powerful, He chooses to use His power in various ways. For example, in

the past, He used His power to perform various miracles to confirm the word that was spoken

by men. However, today, we have the confirmed word to lead us to believe, rather than the

miracles. Although God is powerful enough to do these, He does not choose to do them in the

same way today. See Heb. 2:1-4, 1 Cor. 13:8-13, John 20:30-31.

In the same way, God, although He has the ability to know all things and to even know all

  • 8/6/2019 Questions on God

    3/21

things beforehand, does not use this ability. Several passages in the Bible indicate that God,for reasons that He alone knows, chooses not to know certain things ahead of time. Then,

when the appropriate time comes for Him to discover and act in the situation, then He does. Here are just a couple of examples of what I mean.

Concerning the wickedness of the people of Sodom and the surrounding cities of the plains,

we are told that God, although He could have known the nature and results of their sin, tellsAbraham that He is going down to see if they have committed such sins. Then, after He goes

down, He will know if their condition is as bad as it is.

GEN 18:20 And the Lord said, "The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and

    their sin is exceedingly grave.

GEN 18:21 "I will go down now, and see if they have done entirely according to its outcry,

which has come to Me; and if not, I will know."

After commanding Abraham to sacrifice his only son, the angel of the Lord stops Abraham

from doing so. The reason He gives is, now God knows that Abraham fears Him and is notwilling to withhold anything, including his son from Him.

GEN 22:10 And Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

GEN 22:11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, "Abraham,Abraham!"And he said, "Here I am."

GEN 22:12 And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing tohim; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son,

    from Me."

In other words, I am saying that yes, God knows all that He needs to know in order to allow

men and women to make free choices as to how they will react to Him. Then, based on their

choices and His discovery of them He is able to make whatever decisions are necessary for

the accomplishment of His purpose in the world. Contact Gary

Question 2. Why does God love me?

    Previous Question Top Next Question

Answer That's kind of a tough question, and kind of an easy question at the same time. Theeasy answer is that "God is love" (1 John 4:8). Very simply, it is His nature to love us.

My wife and I just had our first baby, and we love him dearly. It's not anything I can explain,

and it wasn't a gradual thing. I didn't have these feelings for him right after he was born; I

cared for him, but I didn't *love* him. It wasn't until he started showing a little bit of

personality that I really felt a great deal of love for him.

I believe that that feeling is a gift from the Lord, and I believe that that is exactly how He

feels toward us. He adopts us as His children when we obey Him, and He loves us. He caresfor us and provides for us, even as we do our own children. It's only natural to believe that the

feelings we have for our own children are the same feelings that He has for us, since we aremade in His image (Gen. 1:26).

Now I understand that may not be enough of an answer for you, and if that's the case, Iapologize because I don't know anything else to tell you. John tells us that the nature of God

is love, so to look very much deeper into it is to seek to understand the nature of God, and Idon't think we can do that

Questions On God's Dealings With Humanity

    Page 1 2

Question 1. In your article you say that we cannot expect that God still speaks to us through

the church. How do you think He speaks to us? Or do you think He speaks to us at all? You

point to Gal1:8-9 as proof that the Bible is it, and there isn't anything else. True, the Bible is

the word of God, but can you or any man claim to fully understand it - to fully understand

God?? I talk to God. I ask Him for help in understanding...and He answers. He gives me

understanding of His word that I didn't have by merely reading the words written in man's

    language.

    Previous Question Top Next Question

Answer When we consider God's communication to us, the New Testament Scriptures speak

very plainly: Although in days gone by, He spoke to mankind in many different ways and indifferent manners, in the days during the gospel age, He now speaks to us ONLY in His son,

Heb. 1:1-2. It is dangerous for us to suppose the manner in which God speaks, we mustKNOW. In John 1, we are told that in the beginning, the Word was with God and the Word

was God (vs 1); then in verse 14, it says that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

While upon this earth, Jesus did not speak His own words, but spoke what His Father had

told Him to speak (John 14:10). In John 17:8, while in prayer to the Father, He said that the

words the Father gave to Him, He had given to His apostles. The way He did this was by

sending the Holy Spirit to them. You can read about this in John chapters 14-17. Some

highlights: John 14:15-26: Jesus promised to send the Spirit. Remember, in this context, onlythe apostles were present (it was during the last supper). John 14:25-26: He said that the

Spirit would teach them all things and bring to remembrance all things that Jesus had said to

them. John 15:26: He said the Spirit would bear witness of Jesus along with the apostles

(because they were with Him from the beginning, so they could be witness also). John 16:7-

15: We learn further that the Spirit would convict the world concerning sin, righteousness andjudgment; that by the Spirit the apostles would be guided into all truth, and would have the

future disclosed to them. We see these things fulfilled in the lives of the apostles in Actschapters 1 and the first part of chapter 2, in which Jesus tells them to wait in Jerusalem for the

Spirit which had been promised to them (1:1-9). The Spirit came upon them in the form of abaptism (the were "immersed" in the Spirit) in 2:1-4.

Now regarding two points that you raise, it is crucial to understand that, yes, the Bible can beunderstood by most anyone who works at it. If not, then the Scriptures themselves lie.Consider these passages:

John 20:30-31 "And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which

are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." How does John say that

one might come to believe in Christ? By reading what he (John) has written concerning Jesus.

What sense is there in writing to someone who isn't going to be able to understand? Eph 3:3-4

  • 8/6/2019 Questions on God

    5/21

"how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly writtenalready, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of

Christ)" Was Paul lying when he said that his readers could understand what heunderstood? Or were his readers somehow smarter than us?

I Jn 1:3-4 "that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have

fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full." John says that we can have

fellowship (which means a sharing, literally, "commonality") with the apostles through the

things they wrote. Did they write in vain to people who couldn't understand?

1 Cor 2:12-13 "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from

God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things

we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit

    teaches"

There are more passages than these, but you get the point. The Scriptures were MEANT to beread and understood. Even those so-called difficult Old Testament Scriptures could be

understood. We are told that they were written for our learning, our instruction, and ourcomfort (1 Cor. 10:11, Rom. 15:4). What could we possibly learn and would comfort could

we get from something we can't understand? You see also by this that these are not wordswritten by men, but by the Spirit of God. There is no difference in what was spoken and what

was written. The same Spirit directed men in both.

Of course, you have a point when you imply that we can not know EVERYTHING, either

about the Scriptures, or about God. But what we are concerned with is that men are not

bothering to learn what CAN be learned about the Bible and about God. The vast majority of

people, if they seek God at all, do so by their own devices and philosophies. He can not be

found that way. You say that God speaks to you in other ways than through His written word.

If by that you mean that we learn how to apply God's word by putting into practice the things

that it teaches, then I would agree. Well, not I, but the Scriptures. That's what Hebrews 5:14

says. But if you mean that God teaches you truths that are not written in His word, then I

would ask you to tell me what those truths are. I have never come across a truth regarding

God or His will that has not already been revealed in His word. I have been informed of

many so-called truths that contradict His word. In such cases, I must stand on the word. 1

Peter 4:11 teaches that if anyone speaks, he should speak as it were the utterances of God.

When I speak from Scripture, I know I am speaking the utterances of God. All else is humanwisdom and reasoning. Contact Doug

Question 2. Why does it seem like the God in the Old Testament is not the same God as in

the New Testament? For example, the God in the Old Testament was one of revenge and

death (he would help those he liked to win battles and kill people and he asked for sacrificesof animals) The God in the new testament seems to be more loving and forgiving and morealong the lines of Jesus. This is quite confusing. I do no understand why their would be a

difference or even why God would need a sacrifice of any sort. Could you please offer some

    explanation?

  • 8/6/2019 Questions on God

    6/21

Answer First, let me assert that I do not believe that God, as revealed in the New Testament,is any different from the God that is revealed in the Old Testament, as far as His basic nature

and character are concerned. In fact, in both testaments, this point is made clear.

MAL 3:6 "For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

HEB 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.

Although, in the New Testament, we have a fuller view of the nature of God through Jesus

His Son, still, God's basic character has always been consistent since the very beginning.

Both in the Old and the New Testaments we have various instances of God's wrath against

sin on the one hand and God's mercy toward sinners on the other hand. We will point out just

a few passages to consider. Notice His mercy and His wrath in both testaments.

In Gen. 6:3, we learn that God, instead of instantly destroying humanity for their sins, waited

120 years before He brought the universal flood upon the earth. Is this not a display of God's

mercy and patience toward sinful humanity?

Then, we read of David's sins against God, especially in the taking of Bathsheba to be hiswife and the murder of her husband. Yet, in 2 Samuel 12, we read of God's mercy extended

    toward a penitent David.

Also, we read of God's mercy extended many times to the people of Israel, although theyprovoked Him greatly by their sins. See Numbers 13-14.

Then, in the New Testament, we see God's mercy fully displayed in Christ Jesus' death for us.

John 3:16. Yet, we also see His wrath poured out against those who sinned. See Acts 5:1-11.

When it is all said and done, God is both merciful and just. Whether He displays these

attributes in the same specific ways as He did in the past, we can be assured that He is the

same in these areas. Therefore, our goal ought to be to serve Him in the way He directs while

we have the opportunity. See Rom. 11:13-25, especially verse 22. Contact Gary

Question 3. As believers - What are the promises of God to his children and what are the

promises of Jesus to saved individuals? Specifically, what versus can I look up?

    Previous Question

    Top Next Question

Answer The most basic promise is that of Heaven *if* we endure. Read Revelation 2:10.

You can split up the promises into 2 categories: those blessings we receive in this life and

those we receive in the next. You might peruse the Psalms for promises of blessings in thislife; 2 that spring to mind are Psalms 1 and Psalms 23. Although these were written by David

and not Christ, they are still true for us today.

As for promises for the next life, Read John 14:1-6 and Revelation 21:9-22:5. These are some

of the most beautiful passages in the Bible.

There are no promises of riches or of a happy life ("happy" as people of the world woulddefine it). Although David writes that the man of God will prosper, he isn't talking about

  • 8/6/2019 Questions on God

    7/21

physical blessings, although God certainly does provide us with those things. It's more aboutwhat Paul said in his letter to Timothy:

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and

it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be

    content. 1 Timothy 6:6-8

God will never forsake us. Read Romans 8:38-39.

The Lord promises us that we will be blessed with the things that we need in this life (food, clothing, shelter) and that we will receive a home with Him in the next, *if* we are faithful

Christians. Unfortunately, there are very, very few true Christians in the world today.Another of Jesus's promises is that those who want to know His truth will find it (Matt. 7:7-8)

and that those who do not want the truth will not find it (2 Thes. 2:9-12). Contact Michael

Question 4. Do we have real choices in life? I mean if God knows all I do? I really have achoice in what I do. Like if there are 3 ways to get to my home from work and I choose way

2 did I really make a choice? Because if God knows all was that really a choice??

    Previous Question

    Top Next Question

Answer You have asked one of the most fundamental and yet one of the most misunderstood

questions as it relates to God and man. Do we really have choices in life or are we simplyrobots that are controlled and manipulated by God?

Many who believe we do not have choices teach that we are born guilty of sin. Further, they

teach that in order to be saved the Holy Spirit must take action upon our will because wecannot choose to obey God. They teach that after obeying God we cannot choose to turn

from God and be lost after once being saved. Either these things are true or not. And, they

all rest on one concept, free choice. Does the Bible teach that although God may knowcertain actions, do we still have the freedom to choose our way, either to obey or disobey

    Him?

Unique among all of God's creation is man, given the ability to freely choose how he will

behave and thus endowed with the greatest responsibility. Gen. 1:26-31. We can choose

how we will respond to God, whether we will serve Him or not. He does not force us to

serve Him. Note, the stirring words as Joshua, the leader of Israel as they conquered Canaan,

spoke to them in his farewell address.

JOS 24:14 "Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and putaway the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

JOS 24:15 "And if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselvestoday whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond

the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my

house, we will serve the Lord."

Note the words, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve. If they did not have any

choices, this statement would be absurd. But, they did have a choice and with the choices

came consequences either good or bad. But, God did not make the choices for them.

  • 8/6/2019 Questions on God

    8/21

When we look at choice, we can see these four truths revealed in the Bible. Any teachingthat would seek to deny these things is fundamentally false.

    1. Man can choose to sin against God. Sin is a violation of God's law. It is not passed along

by the genes or contracted like a disease, but sin is an action that man chooses to perform.

The first sin is a perfect example of this. Gen. 3. When we follow and act in this way, we

become guilty of sin. 1 John 3:4, 5:17, Rom. 3:23, James 4:17. It is sin that separates usfrom God. Isa. 59:1-2.

    2. We can choose to turn to God and be forgiven. God has revealed the gospel to us and how

we should obey Him. We can choose to yield our will to His and receive forgiveness. See

Acts 2, especially verses 40-41. They chose to respond and some chose not to respond. The

apostles were told to preach to the world so that people could make their choices. Mark

    16:15-16.

    3. After being saved, Christians can choose to be lost. Note the warnings 8n 2 Peter. 2:20-22, Hebrews 6:4-6. What do these warnings mean if we do not have the power to choose to

follow the world again after once being in good standing with God?

    4. Thankfully, we can choose to turn back to God after we have abandoned Him. An

example of this is Simon in Acts 8:13-25. We are told to seek to restore those back to the

Lord again who have turned away. James 5:19-20.

What does all this mean? No matter what we believe the Bible teaches about how much God

knows, we must accept the plain teaching that people then and we now have important

choices to make in our lives. To deny this is to deny the teaching of Scriptures. Have you

made these choices that will save your soul? See Acts 2, especially verses 22-47. Contact

Question 5. My friends and I have been going around in circles on this question: Is God's

love unconditional? We are confused because of the simple fact that God did hate and

therefore that would be a condition. One friend says that salvation is conditional but not

God's love for us. Could you please clear up this problem???

    Previous Question

    Top Next Question

Answer I will do my best to clear up some of the confusion although in some respects, I have

often wrestled with this question. Perhaps, I wrestle with it because of the terms we use

when asking about it. Specifically, the term "conditional" can be difficult to explain. But,

let me do my best letting the Bible be the guide to this and all answers.

First, God's love toward us is unconditional in the sense that it is not dependent on ourbehavior. In fact, God's love is expressed toward us in spite of our bad behavior, sin. Rom.

5:1-11. God has shown His love toward us in Jesus so that we might be saved from His

wrath to come against sin. Therefore, God's wrath is conditional, if we sin and do not receive

forgiveness, we will be punished. Rom. 6:23.

Further, God's love on a physical level is unconditional. God gives physical things and food

to all, no matter if they serve Him or not. Matt. 5:43-48, Acts 14:15-17. This provides

witness of God that He cares for humanity and would have us acknowledge and honor Him.

  • 8/6/2019 Questions on God

    9/21

However, when it comes to our responding to His love, this is conditional. In order to receiveforgiveness of sins, we must respond by faith in Jesus which leads us to repent (change our

mind) of our sins, confess Jesus to be the Son of God and be baptized (fully immersed) inwater so that we may receive forgiveness of sins. Rom. 3:23-26, Acts 2:36-38, 8:35-40,

    Mark 16:15-16, Gal. 3:26-29 Col. 2:11-14, Rom. 6:1-7.

If we do not respond to His love in this way, then we are proclaiming our attempt to face Godon our own terms and this will end in failure. 2 Thes. 1:5 and following. Therefore

salvation is conditional because God has laid down a way in which we should follow in order

to be saved. Also, He has laid down a way in which we should walk to remain saved. Acts

2:42-47, Eph. 4-6, Romans 6, Gal. 5:16-26 and many more.

God does love us whether we love Him or not. But, He will not allow His love for us to blind

Hi from seeing unrepented sins which He hates and will punish in the end. Our only hope is

in Jesus. To be in Jesus, we must meet the conditions of faith given to us as listed above

Question 6. Does God know our future thoughts?

    Previous Question

    Top Next Question

Answer He can, if He wants to. He is God, and He owns this place!

But that does not remove our personal responsibility for our actions. Otherwise, God would

be unreasonable to hold us accountable for our actions, and we know that He does hold usaccountable.

A preacher in Zimbabwe, in south Africa, once explained the Bible doctrine of

    predestination. He used one passage:

Gal 6:7-8 7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall

he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that

soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (KJV)

And he used common sense, which they in Africa may have a lot more of than we do,

because their life is so much simpler than ours. When a farmer plants beans, he gets beans,

not wheat. When he plants peanuts, he get peanuts, not potatoes. You get the picture.

We will reap what we sow. God has promised it. And I have experienced it. Trust me, God

knows what He is talking about!

Remember Cain? There is a message there for us:

Gen 4:3-7 3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the

ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his

flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and hiscountenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy

countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest notwell, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

    (KJV)

Focus on that last statement "...and thou shalt rule over him." Let's see it in another version:

Gen 4:7 7 "If you do well, will not {your countenance} be lifted up? And if you do not do

well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." (NAS)

We must play an active role in our own life. Satan is out there trying to snag us, but we mustdo all we can to prevent that. And God will help us:

1 Cor 10:13 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but

God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with thetemptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV)

    Two messages here:

    1. God will protect us, and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to

    endure. A very comforting promise.

    2. God will always provide a way of escape. It will always be there, but we may have to

really look hard to find it. And when we find it, God's way of escape may not be pretty, andit may not be fun. But if we are going to get out of that mess, we must take advantage of

    God's escape plan.

Remember the one about the guy standed in a flood? He escaped to the roof of his house. A

man in a rowboat came by and asked if he could take the man to safety. The man said, "No,I prayed to God to take care of me, and I trust that He will." Then as the waters got higher, amilitary amphibious vehicle came by and ordered the guy to evacuate, but again he refused,

saying, "No, I prayed to God to take care of me, and I trust that He will." Then as the waters

got higher, and the guy was standing on the top of his chimney, a news helicopter came by

and begged him to climb up the rope to the safety of the helicopter. But the man said, "No, I

prayed to God to take care of me, and I trust that He will." Then the waters rose higher, and

the man drowned. When he saw God, he asked God, "Why did you not save me!" And God

responded that He had sent the man in the rowboat, and the military amphibious vehicle, and

    finally the news helicopter.

Question 8. Does God or will God still punish an entire nation as a unit for their sins as he

did his chosen people the Israelites?

    Previous Question Top Next Question

Answer Excellent question. I hope I get close to your question but it raises the broaderquestions of how God had dealt with the nations in the past and how He deals with them

today. Maybe by answering these, your answer will be presented also.

    1. God has always ruled the nations.

In the Old Testament, we are made aware that God is the ruler of the nations. Daniel 4:16-17.And, He exercised judgments upon nations depending on how unrighteous they were in their

    behavior. Prov. 14:34.

When a nation became so rotten that God viewed them as beyond repair, He brought either

partial or total destruction upon them. However, He was always aware of those who were

righteous in the midst of wickedness and provided a way of escape for them. Gen. 18:21-33,

Ch. 19. For examples of some of His judgments, see the following.

    1. Destruction of Sodom, Gomorrah and the cities of the plains. Gen. 18-19.

    2. Destruction of the Canaanite nations by Israel. Gen. 15:16, Deut. 9:4-6, Joshua.

    3. Destruction of Israel (Northern Kingdom) by Assyria. 2 Kings 17, Isaiah 10.

    4. Destruction of Assyria by Babylon. Nahum

    5. Destruction of Judah by Babylon. Habakkuk, 2 King 24-25.

    6. Destruction of Babylon by the Medes and Persians. Isaiah 13, 44:28-45:7, Daniel 5.

    7. Destruction of Medes and Persians by the Greeks (Alexander the Great). Daniel 8:22-27.

Through these examples, we learn God uses various wicked nations to punish other wicked

nations and when His instruments for judgment reach a certain level of wickedness, then they

    are punished also.

But, does God still punish the nations today?

    2. God, through Jesus, rules the nations today.

It was prophesied that Jesus, the Messiah, would rule the nations. Psalm 2, 45, 110, Isaiah 11.

And, when He was raised from the dead and ascended into Heaven where He received allauthority over Heaven and earth from the Father, these were fulfilled. Matthew 28:18-20,

    Acts 2:29-38, 4:25-30, Heb. 1:7-9, 1 Cor. 15:23-28, Rom. 15:7-12.

  • 8/6/2019 Questions on God

    18/21

Jesus Himself foretold He would judge the rebellious Jewish nation for their unrighteousness.Matthew 23:37-39, 24:25-35. And, john saw Him as ruler of the nations. Rev. 1:5, 12:1-5,

    17:14, 19:11-16, Isaiah 63:1-6.

    3. How should we behave in light of this?

Since Jesus now rules the nations, we should make it our goal to live a righteous, obedient, prayerful life seeking to please Him above all and to submit to our government as long as we

are not called on to disobey God. Acts 2:36-38, Acts 22:16, Matthew 5:13-16, 1 Tim. 2:1-8, 2

Thes. 3:1-5, Rom. 13:1-7, 1 Pet. 2:13-17, Acts 5:27-32. If we are serving Him, then no matter

what happens to our nation, we will eventually be with Him for eternity. For more on how to

Who Did Jesus Claim To Be?

Before we look at some of the evidence which proves Jesus' claims to be true, we first look at

some of His major claims. That is, we seek to answer the question, "Who did Jesus claim to

be?" What things did He say about Himself or how did He respond to what others said aboutHim.

Below are a few of the claims Jesus made either by stating them Himself or agreeing to themafter others had stating them.

    He Is The Messiah

By "Messiah" (Christ in the Greek language) we mean, "Anointed One", a title reserved for

the expected King the Jewish people had been anticipating for hundred of years based upon

many Old Testament prophecies of a descendant of David who would come and rule over

    both Jews and Gentiles.

Jesus, while conversing with a Samaritan woman, made this claim of be the awaited Messiah.

JOH 4:16 He said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."

JOH 4:17 The woman answered and said, "I have no husband."Jesus said to her, "You have

    well said, 'I have no husband';

JOH 4:18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your

husband; this you have said truly. "

JOH 4:19 The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

JOH 4:20 "Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is

the place where men ought to worship."

JOH 4:21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this

mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father.JOH 4:22 "You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for

    salvation is from the Jews.

JOH 4:23 "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the

Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.JOH 4:24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

JOH 4:25 The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ);when that One comes, He will declare all things to us."

JOH 4:26 Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He."

    He Is From Above

Here, Jesus claims that He came from above, Heaven, where God is. Although He took on the

form of flesh, He was not of the earth, but was from the Divine realm.

JOH 8:21 He said therefore again to them, "I go away, and you shall seek Me, and shall die

in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come."JOH 8:22 Therefore the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He

says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come'?"

JOH 8:23 And He was saying to them, "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this

world, I am not of this world.

JOH 8:24 "I said therefore to you, that you shall die in your sins; for unless you believe that I

am He, you shall die in your sins."JOH 8:25 And so they were saying to Him, "Who are You?"Jesus said to them, "What have I

been saying to you from the beginning?JOH 8:26 "I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is

true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."JOH 8:27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.

JOH 8:28 Jesus therefore said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that Iam He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught

Me.JOH 8:29 "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the

things that are pleasing to Him."

JOH 8:30 As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him.

    He Is Eternal

Here, Jesus claims that He has always existed. He did not originate at any particular time and

He will not cease to exist at any particular time. He applies the same language to Himself that

Jehovah applied to Himself in Exodus Chapter 3 when He said that He was "I AM" when

Moses had asked Him about what His name was. This was to indicate that He is the eternalGod that has always existed. Jesus used the same language in the passage below.

JOH 8:52 The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and

the prophets also; and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word, he shall never taste of death.'JOH 8:53 "Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died

too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?"

JOH 8:54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who

    glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God';

JOH 8:55 and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not

know Him, I shall be a liar like you, but I do know Him, and keep His word.

JOH 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."JOH 8:57 The Jews therefore said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You

seen Abraham?"JOH 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

JOH 8:59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself, and wentout of the temple.

He Is Equal With The Father (God)

Jesus said that He and The Father are "one". After He said this, the Jewish people reacted by

concluding that He was claiming equality with the Father (God). In other words, He wasclaiming to be Divine. In their view, He was blaspheming.

JOH 10:24 The Jews therefore gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, "How longwill You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly."

JOH 10:25 Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in

My Father's name, these bear witness of Me.

JOH 10:26 "But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep.

    JOH 10:27 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;

JOH 10:28 and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatchthem out of My hand.

JOH 10:29 "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able tosnatch them out of the Father's hand.

JOH 10:30 "I and the Father are one."JOH 10:31 The Jews took up stones again to stone Him.

JOH 10:32 Jesus answered them, "I showed you many good works from the Father; for whichof them are you stoning Me?"

JOH 10:33 The Jews answered Him, "For a good work we do not stone You, but forblasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God."

JOH 10:34 Jesus answered them, "Has it not been written in your Law, 'I said, you are gods'?

JOH 10:35 "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot

    be broken),

JOH 10:36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world,' You are

blaspheming,' because I said,' I am the Son of God'?

    JOH 10:37 "If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;

JOH 10:38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may

know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father. "

JOH 10:39 Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp.

He Is The ONLY Way To God

Then, Jesus claimed to be the ONLY means that humanity has to reach and have a

relationship with God. This would exclude all others along with their religious teachings and

    ideas.

JOH 14:1 "Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.

JOH 14:2 "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have

told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

JOH 14:3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you toMyself; that where I am, there you may be also.

JOH 14:4 "And you know the way where I am going."JOH 14:5 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we

know the way?"JOH 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the

    Father, but through Me.

He Is The Complete Revelation of The Father

How do we come to know about God? It is not through our feelings, through associating with

some mysterious group who claims to have direct ties to God, communing with nature or bymeditating within ourselves. We can only come to know God as we come to know Jesus and

what He taught through His apostles. He is the full revelation of God to mankind.

JOH 14:7 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you

know Him, and have seen Him."

JOH 14:8 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us."

JOH 14:9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to

know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, 'Show us the

    Father'?

He Would Be The One To Die For Our Sins And Be Raised From The Dead

This claim has to do with Jesus being our Savior,m pro9viding the sacrificial death needed

so that we might have the oppoturnity to be forgiven of our sins. To confirm that His death

would be unique, He claimed that He would be raised from the dead on the third day.

MAT 26:26 And while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He

broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."

MAT 26:27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying,

    "Drink from it, all of you;

MAT 26:28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for

    forgiveness of sins.

MAT 26:29 "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that

day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

MAT 26:30 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

MAT 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it

is written, 'I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.'

MAT 26:32 "But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee."

These are some of Jesus' claims. Whether we believe them or not, it is clear that Jesus

claimed to be more than just a man, a teacher or a prophet. His claims go as far as being God,

the Son of God. Jesus did not claim to be an angel or any other created being!

Now, why should we believe these claims that He made? What evidence is there that these

claims are true? And, if they are true, what do they mean to each of us as far as our salvation

    is concerned?
