The English explorers came to South Carolina looking for land that they could use to build large plantations on, like they had in Barbados. In Barbados, the slaves from West Africa were forced to do all of the work.

The first African slaves came from Barbados. Once Charleston, SC became an important colony, the slaves came to Charleston from different countries in West Africa.

The Voyage of a Slave Slaves were forced on large

ships where they would spend weeks crowded below the deck of the ship. When they arrived in Charleston, they were checked to make sure that they were healthy to sell. Slaves were sold to the person who offered the most money. The person who owned the slave was the master.

Daily Life of a Slave

Slaves did what their master told them to do. Most of the slaves worked for very long hours on the plantation in the field where the crops were grown.

One of the important crops grown on the plantations was rice. The rice was sold to other countries and it made the plantation owners very wealthy, or rich.

Slaves did other work, too. They built homes, cooked meals, sewed clothing, and took care of their master’s children. They were forced to do all of this work for no pay.

Slaves were not treated very well and they did not have any freedom. They slept on the dirt floors in log cabins. They did not have much food or clothing, and they were not allowed to go to school.

A New Culture

The slaves came from different parts of Africa, so they spoke different languages. These different languages were combined to create the Gullah language. With the Gullah

language, slaves were able to communicate with each other. Gullah is more than just a language. It is also a culture. A culture is a way of life. The Gullah culture has its own music, art, foods, and language.

Gullah Traditions: -Sweet grass basket weaving -Storytelling -Quilt making

Slaves Rebel Sometimes, when the slaves

were treated badly, they would rebel, or fight back. Some slaves would break tools, and some would run away. They would run away to northern states where there was no slavery. In 1739, 100 slaves rebelled by breaking into a store to steal supplies to burn down the plantations near the Stono River. This was called the Stono Rebellion. The slaves were

stopped by a group of colonists on horseback. After the rebellion, the plantation owners treated the slaves worse than before.
