Binghamton University Enrollment Overview Total student headcount for fall 2015 increased by 218 students from fall 2014 (1.3%). After three years of enrollment fluctuations, enrollment started to increase dramatically starting fall 2012 (SUNY 2020). From fall 2011 to fall 2015 total enrollment increased by 14.7%.

Undergraduate & Graduate Student Headcount

The undergraduate student headcount currently stands at 13,491, an increase of 79 students or .6% from fall 2014. However, from fall 2011 to fall 2015 Undergraduate enrollment increased 13.7%, the largest increase over any 5 year span in the past decade. The graduate student headcount is 3,422, an increase of 139 students from fall 2014—or an increase of 4.2%. The Graduate Schools enrollment has also been on a substantial rise. Since fall 2011, the graduate enrollment has increased by 18.6%. Graduate students make up 20.2% of the total University enrollment in fall 2015 while undergraduates comprise 79.8% of the student population.

Gender Distributions Overall, 52.16% of Binghamton University’s students are male whereas 47.84% are female. These ratios have remained roughly the same throughout the past decade. Over the last decade men have outnumbered women on campus each year. From 2006 to 2015, total male enrollment increased by 19.1% whereas total female enrollment increased by 16.1%

Undergraduate Student Gender Distributions

52.22% of Binghamton University’s undergraduate students are male whereas 47.78% are female. Since fall 2011, undergraduate female enrollment has increased by 15.7% and by 1.0% since last fall. Undergraduate male enrollment has also seen increases, but not as large as undergraduate female enrollment. Since fall 2011, undergraduate male enrollment has increased by 12% and by 0.2% since last fall.

Graduate Student Gender Distributions 51.93% of Binghamton’s Graduate student population is male, whereas 48.07% of the Graduate population is female. Only in fall 2006 and fall 2012 did women have the majority in Graduate School enrollment. Since 2011 there has been a 15.0% increase in enrollment for female graduate students and 4.8% since last fall. Since fall 2011 graduate male student population increased by 22.1% and 3.7% since last fall.

Enrollment Status

Continuing Students Once again Continuing Upper Division (junior and senior level) students comprise the largest group of students, with a headcount of 8,225, or 48.6% of the total Binghamton University student body in fall 2015. There are 1,526 Continuing Lower Division students and 2,184 Continuing Graduate students. Overall, continuing undergraduate and graduate students make up 70.6% of the student population.

New Students In fall 2015, Binghamton University welcomed 2,667 new freshmen, 1,073 new transfer students, 1,238 new graduate students, 2,184 continuing graduate students, 1,526 continuing lower division students and 8,225 continuing upper division students. The new freshman figure is 1.9% higher compared to fall 2014. New transfer student enrollment decreased by 8.4% and new graduate student enrollment increased by 4.6% (1,238 compared to 1,184 in fall 2014). There are 3.7% fewer Continuing lower division students compared to fall 2014, and 3.6% more Continuing Upper Division Students compared to fall 2014.

The Undergraduate in-state student headcount increased to 11,218 students in fall 2015. This represents the highest number of undergraduate in-state students in the last decade. The Undergraduate out-of-state student headcount decreased to 984 students (17.0% decrease from fall 2014), and now accounts for 7.3% of all undergraduates. There are 1,289 international undergraduates (a 4.5% decrease from last fall), representing 9.1% of undergraduates. The combined 16.8% of out-of-state and international undergraduates is a slight decrease from last fall’s 18.9%.

At the graduate level, in-state student headcount increased to 1,786. Although in-state students make up the majority of graduate students at 52.2%, this percentage has decreased since fall 2011. Undergraduate Student Geographic Origin The following two charts illustrate regional breakdowns of undergraduate students. Although the number of

undergraduate students from many of these New York State regions has remained relatively constant, the percentage of

undergraduates coming from Long Island increased steadily since fall 2007 whereas the number of students from New

York City has steadily decreased from fall 2006 to fall 2011. However, fall 2015’s figure of 21.5% is the fourth

consecutive fall where the percentage of undergraduates from New York City has increased. Local, out-of-state, and

International students have also seen decreases in enrollment in recent years.

international student population has nearly doubled from 801 to 1,434 (an increase of 79%) from fall 2006 to fall 2015.

from fall 2014 (an increase of 1%). Undergraduate Hispanic students also increased significantly from 757 in fall 2006 to 1389 in fall 2015, an increase of 84%. Black/African American undergraduate students increased by 13% since fall 2006 but decreased by 4.6%% since last fall. The population of students with unknown ethnicity has fallen from 20% in fall 2006 to 2% in fall 2015.

Breakdown of Graduate Student Ethnicity

The following two charts illustrate breakdowns of graduate students by ethnicity. Graduate demographics at

Binghamton University have significantly changed since 2006. In 2006, the largest ethnic group (48%) in graduate

enrollment was White students whereas in fall 2015, Non Resident Alien (NRA) students are the largest student group

(42%). NRA grew from 804 in fall 2006 to 1448 in fall 2015, an increase of 80% during last decade. The number of

graduate Hispanic students also grew from 94 in fall 2006 to 124 in fall 2015, an increase of 32%. In 2008, BU started to

track of both the ‘2 or more races’ and ‘Native Islander’ categories, which have seen growth since their inception.

Undergraduate Students International students make up 9.5% of all undergraduate students for fall 2015. There are 1,866 non-U.S. citizen undergraduate students in fall 2015 (including non-U.S. citizens who are eligible to pay in-state tuition). Graduate Students International students make up 45.7% of all graduate students in fall 2015, an increase of 5.8% over fall 2014. There are 1,554 non-U.S. citizen graduate students in fall 2015 (including non-U.S. citizens who are eligible to pay in-state tuition). Enrollment by School

Harpur College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate enrollment in Harpur College has increased over the past decade by 16.9%. The biggest period of undergraduate growth came between the years of 2011 and 2015 with an increase of 16.1%. Graduate enrollment increased by nineteen students (1.7%) compared to fall 2014 and has decreased by 2.6% (30 students) since fall 2006. Total fall 2015 enrollment in Harpur College is 10,151, accounting for 60.0% of total enrollment at Binghamton.

Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science Watson total enrollment has shown a steady increase over the last decade. Undergraduate enrollment increased dramatically by 34.6% between 2006 and 2010. However, Watson undergraduate enrollment had more moderate gains between 2011 and 2015 (5.7%). Watson Graduate enrollment has increased over the last decade, but 2011 through 2015 growth (64.6%) was more substantial than 2006 through 2010 growth (17.2%). Overall, the entire Watson enrollment has increased 52.2% over the past decade with 58.14% of that growth coming during the period of 2006-2010.

School of Management

Undergraduate enrollment in the School of Management peaked at 1,497 students in fall 2008, dropped to 1,350 in 2010 and has since increased back to 1,627 students in fall 2015. Graduate enrollment increased from 229 students in 2006 to 390 students in 2015. However, there have been some fluctuations in that time period. Graduate Enrollment increased between 2006-2008 and 2011-2015 but decreased during 2009-2011. Overall, since 2006 Undergraduate enrollment has increased by 16.5% and Graduate enrollment has increased by 70.3% with total enrollment increasing by 24.0%.

Decker School of Nursing Undergraduate enrollment in the Decker School of Nursing has seen a slight decrease over the past 10 years whereas Graduate enrollment has increased dramatically. Although undergraduate enrollment waned from fall 2007 to fall 2011 decreasing by 27.8%, it has experienced growth since 2011 and currently sits at 388 or an increase of 12.5% since fall 2011. Graduate enrollment doubled over the last decade, peaking in fall 2013 with 243. Currently, graduate enrollment sits at 191 students, a decrease of 8.6% from fall 2014.

College of Community and Public Affairs

The Undergraduate Enrollment at the College of Community and Public Affairs has remained constant over the years with slight fluctuations. From fall 2006 to fall 2010 enrollment increased by 3.5% and from 2011 to 2015 the enrollment decreased by 2.3%. From fall 2006 to fall 2015 the undergraduate enrollment decreased by 2.8% whereas the Graduate enrollment increased by 1.2% from fall 2006 to fall 2015. Graduate enrollment had low points in 2007, 2011, and 2012 but has rebounded to an all time high of 314.

Graduate School of Education In the summer of 2006, the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) split into the School of Education (SED) and the College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA). SED was later renamed the Graduate School of Education (GSE) and consists of the graduate-level education program formerly under SEHD. The Graduate School of Education (GSE) has also had significant increases and decreases in enrollment since fall 2006. From fall 2006 to fall 2009 Enrollment increased from 249 to 309, an increase of 24.0%. From fall 2010 to fall 2014, enrollment decreased from 309 students to 231 student, a decrease of 25.2%. Since last year, enrollment has increased by 13 students or 5.6% increase. Since 2006 there has been a 5 student (2.0%) decrease in enrollment.

Summary Binghamton University’s current total enrollment stands at 16,913 which is largest in the school’s history for both

Undergraduate and Graduate enrollment. The gender breakdown is 52.2% male and 47.8% female. There are 13,491

Undergraduate Students on campus while there are 3,422 Graduate Students on campus. The 11,218 undergraduate in-

state students represents the largest number of in-state students in school history. The undergraduate out-of-state

student enrollment numbers have been declining since 2012. The Graduate in-state enrollment has remained relatively

stable since 2006 while out-of-state Graduate enrollment has declined by almost 20%. The international Graduate

enrollment has nearly doubled. Of all Undergraduate students, 21.5% come from New York City and 25.0% come from

Long Island. The two most represented New York regions in the Graduate School are Local at 22.9% and Western Region

with 7.3%. The least are Rockland at 0.8% and Westchester at 1.3%. The five most represented countries of origin in

undergraduate are China, Republic of Korea, Turkey, India and Japan. The five most represented countries of origin in

Graduate school are China, India Republic of Korea, Turkey and Iran. Harpur College Undergraduate enrollment has

spiked to 9,031 whereas the Graduate enrollment has remained constant. Watson School of Engineering enrollment has

boomed for both Graduate and Undergraduate enrollment. School of Management has had moderate increases in both

Graduate and Undergraduate Enrollment since 2006. The Decker School of Nursing has had major decreases in

Undergraduate Enrollment, but large increases In Graduate enrollment. The College of Community and Public Affairs

has had stability in both Graduate and Undergraduate enrollment over the last decade although the Graduate School of

Education has had major fluctuations in both directions in the past decade.
