Whittaker Track (above) has been home to the BGSU track and field programs for the past four decades. Numerous Olympians have had the opportunity to train and com-pete at Whittaker track, including BGSU’s own David Wottle, the gold medalist in the 800m run in the 1972 Olympics. The track was completely redone in the summer of

2007 and played host to the 2008 Outdoor MAC Championships. The Charles E. Perry Field House (below) is the indoor home of the BGSU track and field program. The Field House supports a 200-meter track and is supplied with the necessary equip-

ment for all field events as well. The facility has been host to the 2002, 2006 and 2011 Indoor MAC Championships.

2014-15 CROSS COUNTRY / TRACK AND FIELD

2014-15 TRACK AND FIELD ROSTER HEAD COACH LOU SNELLINGIn three years at the helm of Bowling Green cross country and track and field, Lou Snelling has overseen the restoration of four programs and has built a foundation to revive the programs to a championship level of performance that honors the teams’ rich tradition and history. When Snelling began at Bowling Green at the beginning of the 2011-12 season, he set in motion a plan to build a new culture within the programs. While redshirting a high number of talented student-athletes, the programs struggled at times to find consistency in competition. But the 2013-14 school year saw each of the four teams reach milestones and individual marks that had not been seen in many years. IMPROVEMENT IN COMPETITIONBeginning with cross country in the fall of 2013, the women’s team climbed into the top half of the MAC standings for the first time since 2008 with a sixth place finish in the league championship despite boast-ing a lineup devoid of seniors. That result completed a two-year stretch that saw the program climb six spots in the conference standings from a 12th place finish in 2011. At the NCAA Regional meet, the team placed 17th, an improvement of 16 spots over two years prior. While the men’s cross country program continues to develop, the coaching staff proved their ability to develop individual talent. In 2013, senior Jason Salyer placed sixth overall at the MAC Championships,

earning first team All-Conference honors. He was the first Falcon to garner that acknowledgement in 18 years. As a team, men’s cross country improved three spots at the NCAA Regional meet from a year ago. In women’s track and field, Snelling has seen his programs make comparably impressive strides. During the 2014 indoor season, the Falcons improved three spots in the Mid-American Conference standings, jumping from 11th a year ago to a tie for eighth. The Falcons’ 38 points more-than-tripled their total of 12 points from 2013. Senior Jeanette Pettigrew became the first BGSU runner to win the 60 at the MAC Indoor Championships and the first to win any event at the meet since 2011. The 2014 outdoor season was also one to be proud of. The team scored 60 points at the MAC Championships, the most in 15 years. It was a 37-point increase over the 2013 season, the largest improvement in the MAC, and a 59-point increase since the program scored just one point in 2012. Brooke Pleger won her second consecu-tive MAC title in the hammer throw and the Falcons sent five athletes in eight events to the NCAA Regional preliminary meet, including two freshmen in three events in Makenzie Wheat and Kori Reiser. Pleger went on to the NCAA National Champi-onships and finished third in the ham-mer throw, the best individual finish for a women’s track and field athlete in program history. Pleger also earned Great Lakes

Region Field Athlete of the Year honors and won a gold medal at the 2014 U-23 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) International Athletics Champion-ship. RECOGNITION AND HONORSIn just a short time, Snelling’s athletes at Bowling Green have begun to receive rec-ognition at a pace that has not been seen in quite some time. Jason Salyer became the first Falcon to earn first team All-Confer-ence honors in men’s cross country since 1999. Jeanette Pettigrew added a first team

All-Conference medal during the 2014 indoor season and was second team All-Conference during the outdoor campaign. Brooke Pleger is a two-time first team All-Conference student-athlete for outdoor track and field. Pleger, in fact, has become one of the most decorated athletes in BGSU history. Following the 2013 track and field season she was named the Mid-American Conference’s Field Athlete of the Year. She is just the second two-time All-American in program history and earned the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association’s Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year honor for her performance during the 2014 track and field season. She is also a seven-time MAC Field Athlete of the Week (six times during the outdoor season and once during indoor). Pettigrew became the first BGSU sprinter to be honored in more than a decade with a MAC Track Athlete of the Week honor during the 2014 outdoor season. Snelling himself is no stranger to earning accolades. In November of 2013, he was named to the All-Time Southland Conference Cross Country Honor Roll in recognition of the league’s 50th an-niversary. He was one of eight coaches recognized for their historic contributions to the sport. ACADEMICSWhile the team has made strides in competition, academic suc-cess has not fallen behind. Following the 2013 cross country sea-son, five Falcons were named Academic All-MAC (three women and two men) with another six earning honorable mention status. Two BGSU student-athletes were named Academic All-MAC during the 2014 indoor track and field season and another eight garnered honorable mention honors. During the 2014 outdoor season, four Falcons were named Academic All-MAC and four more were named honorable mention. As well, all five BGSU student-athletes who competed at the NCAA Regional preliminary meet were named USTFCCCA All-Academic, the second-most in the MAC. The women’s cross country team earned All-Academic Team hon-ors for the 13th consecutive season following the 2013 campaign, posting a 3.37 team grade point average. The men’s cross country team was honored for the fourth consecutive year and posted the fourth-best team GPA in the country at 3.60. The women’s track and field team also earned the honor following the 2013 season, marking the seventh consecutive year that they have been recog-nized. Brooke Pleger was named USTFCCCA All-Academic following the 2013 season and she was named second team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2014. PRIOR TO BOWLING GREENSnelling arrived in Bowling Green in 2011 after spending eight seasons at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he served as head coach of the cross country team and assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field programs.

While at Stephen F. Austin, Snelling led his athletes to a level of success that rivaled any program in the region. During his tenure, his teams won a combined 15 conference championships, and his athletes won 32 individual Southland Conference crowns.

In just the 2010-11 season, his teams won four of six possible championships – SFA women’s teams won the cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field titles, the first conference sweep in school history. Also making history, the men’s track and field team won the SLC outdoor championship for the first time.

Snelling’s athletes completed 221 track and field scoring perfor-mances at conference championship meets. They also set 26 separate school records and combined for eight NCAA individual qualifying performances.

His athletes were no strangers to honors and awards, either. Snel-ling’s runners won six SLC Athlete of the Year awards, four SLC Student-Athlete of the Year awards, and five SLC Freshman of the Year awards. His teams also featured three conference outstand-ing track performers and a high point scorer from an outdoor conference championship meet.

As SFA’s cross country coach, Snelling was honored as SLC Coach of the Year six times. In his first season at SFA, Snelling led the women’s cross country team to the conference champion-ship and lowest team score in school history (42 points) and then guided the men’s squad to a third-place finish at the NCAA re-gional meet. The finish was the school’s best ever and their score was their lowest in team history for a regional meet. The 2005 men’s and 2011 women’s cross country squads currently hold the school record for lowest point total at a conference championship (28 – Men, 34 – Women).

In 2004 and 2005, he guided Ashley Monteau to SFA’s first-ever individual berth in the NCAA Championships; she is the only cross country runner in school history to qualify for the national cham-pionship on multiple occasions. Also in this period, track and field distance runner Ana Rodriguez qualified for the NCAA Champion-ships in the 5,000 meters three consecutive years (2003-2005). Only three other women in the country matched that feat in the 5,000 meters during that time frame.

Prior to his stint at Stephen F. Austin, Snelling spent three years as a volunteer assistant coach for nationally-ranked men’s track and cross country programs at Indiana University. While a Hoosier, he prepared practice and competition schedules for freshmen, facili-tated day-to-day responsibilities for the programs, and spent time as recruiting coordinator.

During the 2002-03 season, Indiana’s cross country team ranked in the top 20 nationally and produced two All-Big 10 conference runners. The men’s track and field team finished in the top ten dur-ing the indoor season, and that team featured the NCAA runner-up in the mile (John Jefferson).

Snelling earned a masters degree in public affairs from Indiana in 2003 and a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the University of Central Florida in 2000. Snelling competed as a member of the cross country and track teams while an undergrad-uate student at UCF. As a Golden Knight, he served as captain and won all-conference awards.

Snelling is married to the former April Vitori. The couple has two children, Louie and Madie. The family resides in Bowling Green.

2014-15 CROSS COUNTRY / TRACK AND FIELD

THROWS COACH MATT CONLYMatt Conly begins his fourth season at Bowling Green State University in 2014-15 as an assistant coach for the women’s track and field program, specializing in throws.

Conly has proven to be one of the top throws coaches in the country, sending three Falcons to the NCAA Regional pre-liminary meet in the hammer throw a year ago, as well as two in discus and one in shot put. His daily instruction and coaching has been instrumental to the development of Brooke Pleger as a two-time All-Ameri-can and one of the top hammer throwers in the country.

Pleger has twice broken the MAC Cham-pionship record in the hammer thrower and finished third at the NCAA National Championships a year ago, the best finish at the meet by a BGSU women’s track and field student-athlete in the history of the program. On top of that, redshirt fresh-man Kori Reiser advanced to regionals in the hammer throw and discus a year ago, while true freshman Makenzie Wheat did the same in the shot put. Graduate student Tina Perrine also qualified for regionals in the hammer throw and discus.

Conly has several years of experience as an assistant and head coach on both the high school and collegiate level and is closely familiar with the Midwestern track and field community.

Most recently, Conly served as assistant track coach at West Virginia University from the fall of 2008 through the spring of 2011. While at West Virginia, Conly was part of the 2011 Big East Coaching Staff of the Year. He primarily worked with the women’s throws group and also assisted with multi-event athletes.

At WVU, Conly’s athletes ranked among the best in school history. He guided Terina Miller to school records in the weight and hammer throws and coached the top two weight and hammer throwers in school history. He also coached the number two and three discus throwers ever to compete at WVU.

Conly’s multi-sport athletes were also high achievers. Chelsea Carrier earned NCAA Indoor All-American honors in 2010 and 2011 for the pentathlon and 2011 NCAA Outdoor All-American honors for the heptathlon. She set school records in both events and won the Big East champion-ship in the pentathlon. Conly also coached Katelyn Williams, who finished third in the Big East in the heptathlon in 2011.

Conly designed and implemented a day-to-day training program for his throwers. He also worked with strength and conditioning staff members to design weight programs. He also assisted with recruiting, team travel and other team management.

Prior to his stint at West Virginia, Conly was the head boy’s track coach at New Castle Chrysler High School in New Castle, Ind. from Jan. 2006 to June 2008. As head coach, Conly instructed his athletes in all events and developed train-ing and practice schedules, as well as workout regimens, for 30-40 athletes. He organized meets with other schools and managed all day-to-day responsibilities associated with the program.

His teams placed second twice in Indiana state sectional meets. He had one athlete finish third at the 2006 state championship in the high jump and another place 12th at the 2007 state meet in the discus.

Conly began his coaching career as the assistant track and field coach at Muncie Central High School (Jan. 2004-June 2005) in Muncie, Ind.

Conly is a graduate of Ball State University, where he majored in physical education and health science. At BSU, Conly competed

for the Cardinals’ men’s track and field squad before it was dis-banded after 2003. Conly finished third in the javelin at the 2003 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships and was an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier that year. In 2002, he finished eighth at the MAC Championships and set a BSU freshman re-cord in the javelin. He ranks third on BSU’s all-time list.

Conly holds a USATF Level I Coaches Certification and has lent his services as a camp instructor for three years (2009-11) as in-structor at the West Virginia University Track and Field Camp and the Jud Logan’s Track and Field Camp.

SPRINTS COACH JAMES GILDONJames Gildon enters his third year as an assistant coach for Bowling Green State University. Gildon’s primary responsibilities include working with the jump, sprint and hurdle groups for Bowling Green Track and Field.

Gildon helped develop Jeanette Pettigrew into one of the top sprinters in the Mid-American Conference. Pettigrew earned the MAC title in the 60 during the indoor season and went on to qualify for the NCAA Regional preliminary meet in both the 100 and the 200 during the outdoor campaign.

Gildon’s first year at BGSU was one that showed the promise of future success. During the indoor season, the 4x400 relay team broke the school record at the Mid-American Conference Championships to place fourth, while sophomore Brittany Sinclair shocked the field with a sixth

place finish in the 400. During the outdoor season, Gildon’s troops again scored big at the MAC Championships as Jeanette Pettigrew placed sixth in the 100, while both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also finished sixth. Freshman Tiera Parker, making her first appearance at the MAC Championships, placed eighth in the triple jump. During the course of the outdoor season, school records fell in both the 400 and 800 relays.

Gildon came to Bowling Green from Fort Hays State University where he coached two national champions, nine NCAA All-Americans, 24 national qualifiers, nine con-ference champions and two ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

Under Gildon’s tenure, four Fort Hays University records were broken. Along with 19 of his athletes that rank in the top five of various school records, Gildon was

responsible for producing the top five women long jumpers in school history, averaging 5.93 meters per jump. Three of Gildon’s athletes also held the top three women’s triple jump records, aver-aging 12.16 meters.

Gildon produced at least one NCAA Division II All-American for four consecutive seasons.

During the 2010 indoor season, Gildon coached Darcie Schmitz to a National Championship in the long jump and a runner-up finish in the triple jump.

In the 2007-2008 season, Gildon helped coach Bryan Haynes to a National Championship in the 200m (indoors) and also saw him qualify for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 200m (outdoors) by running 20.69.

Prior to arriving at FHSU, Gildon coached at Creighton Prep High School in Omaha, Neb. from 2005-2007. While in charge of the horizontal and vertical jumps, he coached 20 Nebraska State Ath-letic Association qualifiers and 17 athletes to All-State honors.

Gildon competed for Loyola University of Chicago from 2001 to 2004. He ranks in the top 5 in the long Jump and triple Jump both indoors and outdoors. He was also a six-time Horizon League All-Conference performer while competing primarily in the jumps, but also in the short sprints and relays.

Gildon completed his master’s degree in health and human performance from FHSU in 2009. He graduated from Nebraska-Omaha in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science.

Gildon now resides in Bowling Green with his wife Jennifer (Faas).

ASSISTANT COACH ERIC THATCHEREric Thatcher begins his third season at Bowling Green State University in 2014-15 (second with cross country), working primarily with the men’s cross country program. 2014-15 CROSS COUNTRY / TRACK AND FIELD

BGSU PRESIDENT MARY ELLEN MAZEYAfter a national search, Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey was appointed President of Bowling Green State University on March 22, 2011. Dr. Mazey’s extensive experience in Ohio public universities and with implementing strategic plans, coupled with her understanding of the role higher education has to play in the state’s well-being, led the BGSU trustees to select her as the next president of the University.

Before becoming president of BGSU, she served from 2009-2011 as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Auburn University. In that capacity, she oversaw the academic programming for twelve colleges and was responsible for fostering the advancement of the university’s strategic plan. While at Auburn, Dr. Mazey was chair of the Enrollment Management Council, the University Campaign Feasibility Task Force, and the Efficiency Task Force. In addition, she served on the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Council on Academic Affairs Executive Committee.

From 2005-2009, she was Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University (WVU), where she led a college-wide implementation of the WVU 2010 Strategic Plan and served on the

Council to Implement the University’s Strategic Plan. In addition, she served on the Presidential Search Committee, the Enrollment Management Council, and the WVU Research Corporation. She also played a leadership role in the university’s Advanced Energy Ini-tiative and nanotechnology research effort. She was a board member of the West Virginia Humanities Council, the Monongalia/Preston County United Way and the West Virginia NASA Space Grant Consortium.

Prior to being appointed Dean at WVA, Dr. Mazey served for seven years as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State Univer-sity. She was founding director of the Center for Urban and Public Affairs at Wright State and served in that capacity for eleven years, from 1983-1994. During that time, she was the university’s representative to the Ohio Board of Regents’ Urban University Advisory Committee. In addition, she served as chair of the Department of Urban Affairs and Geography and led the creation of a Master of Pub-lic Administration Program. From 1993-1996, Dr. Mazey held the title of Distinguished Professor of Professional Service at WSU.

Dr. Mazey received her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in urban geography in 1977 and taught at that institution for two years before joining the faculty of Wright State University in 1979.

In 1996-1997, Dr. Mazey was the appointed Director of the Office of University Partnerships for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In that capacity, she had oversight of HUD’s $25 million in grant programs to colleges and universities across the country. In addition, she served as HUD’s liaison to higher educational associations, other federal agencies, and colleges and universities. Dr. Mazey has served as a grants reviewer and consultant to HUD and the U.S. Department of Education in addition to being a consultant to the Appalachian Regional Commission and numerous local governments, colleges and universities.

She and her late husband of 40 years, Bruce, had two sons, Bryan and Zackary. The older, Bryan, has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Wright State University and a master’s in engineering management from the University of Dayton. He works for GE Aviation in the aerospace industry. He and his wife, Michele, have two young children and live near Cincinnati. The younger son, Zackary, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in accountancy and finance and received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Dayton School of Law. He practices law in Charleston, W.Va.

2014-15 CROSS COUNTRY / TRACK AND FIELD

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR CHRIS KINGSTOND. Christopher Kingston was named the 13th full-time Athletics Director at Bowling Green State University on June 9, 2013. The Falcons have had an extremely eventful first year with Kingston at the helm of the 18-team Intercollegiate Athletics program at BGSU. He has a tremendous vision and believes Falcon Athletics will continue to achieve at a high level academically, athletically and in the community. Academically, student-athletes had a strong year in the classroom for the 2013-14 academic year. Three teams achieved a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 1,000 in their multi-year APR, ten teams achieved a perfect single year APR, and all Falcon teams performed above the standard established by the NCAA. Additionally, Falcon student-athletes excelled in the classroom through their grade point averages (GPA). The fall GPA (3.18), spring GPA (3.16) and cumulative GPA (3.18) were the highest recorded scores in recent history. Out of 425 student-athletes at BGSU, 252 achieved above a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 31 of those earned a perfect 4.0. Eight teams finished their competitive seasons in the top half of their respective conference. The highlights include: the first Mid-American Conference (MAC) football championship in over 20 years; a women’s basketball regular season MAC Championship that includes hanging a banner for the ninth straight year; hockey competing in the Western Col-

legiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Final Five tournament in their inaugural season in the league; gymnastics sending three individuals to post-season NCAA competition; track and field sending five individuals to post-season NCAA competition to compete in eight events while Brooke Pleger repeated as an NCAA All-American in the hammer throw. A number of significant donations were made during the 2013-14 academic year.
