Rugby Academy Programme Nelson College offers both Senior and Junior Rugby Academy programmes. The Senior Academy is predominantly 1st and 2nd XV players who opt into this programme as a subject choice. The Year 10 programme has a broad base in the first half of the year where the focus in maintaining and increasing participation. In the second half of the year the focus narrows down into excellence in performance. The Academies both run as core curriculum subjects for four hours per week throughout the year, based on the six pillars of rugby – technical, tactical, physical, nutrition, mental and holistic. The Academy is fronted by former Scottish, Hurricanes and Taranaki skills coach Jono Phillips, and Master in Charge of Rugby Peter Grigg. We aim to develop young rugby players giving them the skills, capability and confidence to perform at the highest level.Our programmes combine academic school study with specialist rugby coaching and are open to students aged 14 -18 years.

Coaching Jono Phillips is our 1st XV Coach as well as Coaching Director for the Academy programmes. He also manages coach development, overseeing all the coaches within the Nelson College age grade system.As a professional coach, I am proud of the team ethic that is particularly strong at Nelson College. Touch Rugby ProgrammeNelson College is in the Top 4 in New Zealand, with teams playing in Tasman, South Island and Nationals tournaments.
Sevens ProgrammeAt the conclusion of the normal rugby season in October, we move into Sevens mode. There are regional tournaments and club competitions which prepare the College team for the National Condor Sevens Tournament in December. Nelson College is currently ranked in the Top 10 in New Zealand.

Nelson College is an innovative boys’ school founded in 1856. While the College takes pride in being New Zealand’s oldest state school, today’s focus is about educating young men for the future.
Nelson College has a proud tradition in rugby with the first game of rugby in New Zealand being played at the Botanical Reserve on 14 May 1870 between Nelson College and the Nelson Rugby Football Club. As well as traditional fifteen a side rugby, Nelson College has also been a powerful force in both Sevens and Touch Rugby, with excellent programmes alongside the traditional form.Nationally we are currently ranked fourth in New Zealand for rugby.The 150th anniversary of the first game of rugby in New Zealand is being celebrated in 2020 here in Nelson.

RUGBY AT NELSON COLLEGE
Pre-season (February - April)Joining the programme in February (Term One) means students can take advantage of the pre-season training sessions, play pre-season preparation games, and take part in team trials. Students may also have the opportunity to attend a Crusaders game in Term One.
Rugby season (April - September)Terms Two and Three are when most of the games are played in the local and national inter school programmes, as well as any other traditional fixtures that the College takes part in.
Post season (October - December)With the inter school Rugby competition finished, this is an excellent time to work on skills. The Seven’s competitions is a chance to prepare and strengthen for the next Rugby season.
