The NPDL project is a global partnership involving approximately 1000 schools from 10 countries. It is designed to focus teaching and learning on skills that are essential for our students in a rapidly changing world. The skills are centered on developing competency in the 6 C’s, these being: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and character. At the end of 2015, Kilcoy State High School, along with 5 other schools from our region, was invited by Mary Coverdale, the Assistant Regional Director for North Coast Region to take part in this global learning initiative. Since this time, a team of teachers including myself, Cami Dench, Monica Smith, Teena Matai, Rachel Barry and Deputy Principal Lindy Craddy have been doing our own deep learning around this work and developing our own skillsets in our classrooms. It is wonderful to be able to share our own learning experiences, not only with our staff at Kilcoy High, but also across the region and now internationally. In Canada, the Queensland contingent presented 3 ‘insight sessions’ to the international audience which were very well received. It was incredible to witness the interest in the work we are doing and to be valued on this international stage. Recently, I have been trained as a global moderator which involves reviewing and quality assuring work from schools involved in the project from across the globe. Undertaking this work is both challenging and rewarding particularly given the language barriers and time zone differences. While we utilise Skype to connect and collaborate with educators in other countries such as Canada, Finland, Netherlands, Uruguay and the US, meeting these people face to face definitely adds the personal element that is vital in education. In addition to the conference, the trip also provided the opportunity to visit 4 schools in Canada who have also been involved with the NPDL project and to compare their schooling system and classrooms with ours. Our work with the NPDL Project is only just in its infancy and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead. In addition to broadening our work within our own school here in Kilcoy, we will also be working with the 5 cluster schools to mentor and coach an additional 24 primary and secondary schools from across our region as they begin their NPDL journey. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our school NPDL Team and our incumbent Principal Mr Chris Dench for their vision, efforts and dedication to this valuable work, and to Education Queensland for the opportunity to be involved with such a rewarding experience. I feel so proud and privileged to have represented (as a member of

our regional team) Kilcoy State High School and Education Queensland, at the NPDL Global Deep Learning Lab last week in Toronto, Canada.

From the Principal

It has certainly been a busy start to the term with all of the short weeks and all of the school and local events. So far this term we have seen mighty minds coming to work with our OP eligible year 12s, Term 1 reports finalised and sent home, the Anzac Day services both here at school and in town, the senior drama excursion, the year 8 humanities excursion, all of the show events, the cross country and colour fun run, parent teacher interviews and this week we have jumped straight into NAPLAN for our year 7s and 9s. This will be followed by our pastoral care activities for these year levels on Friday.

We have begun the process of academic reviews with our seniors to ensure that they are all travelling well on the path towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). I would encourage the parents and carers of our senior students to discuss their progress and what the term 1 reports tells us. This is particularly true for our year 11s as we now have the first indications of their progress in senior subjects. It is sometimes the case that students choose an ambitious path that is not suited to them. All students will have a plan in place to ensure that they are on track to achieve their QCE.

I must take the opportunity to

congratulate Khi Anderson in year

10 who has been selected to take

part in the inaugural Global

Citizens of the Future - Tokyo

study tour. Khi undertakes classes

in Japanese via the Brisbane

School of Distance Education as

part of her year 10 studies. She is

one of only 15 students chosen

from throughout Queensland to

travel to Japan. Khi was selected

from high performing students

studying Japanese and having a

strong interest in continuing their

Japanese and science,

technology, engineering and

mathematics (STEM) subjects into

their senior years. I look forward to

hearing about her travels when

she returns.

From the Deputy Principal

I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Val Lane and I am currently Deputy Principal at the school. I look after Year 8, 10 and 12 student welfare and behaviour alongside all things Senior Schooling. I’ve been working in Education since 1985 and moved to Queensland in 2008. I have been working as a Deputy Principal for the past 4 years and welcomed the opportunity to come and work at Kilcoy State High School. I look forward to forming a genuine partnership between school and home to work towards the best possible learning outcomes for all students.

SENIOR SCHOOLING

VET Certification Did you know that if you are undertaking any Certificate Course you need a USI (Unique Student Identifier)? It’s really easy to get, you go on line to https://www.usi.gov.au/ and selecting the left box then following the prompts. Please advise the school office of the number. This number will be used for all courses even after school so please use a private email address not a school one.

Year 12 Is your Year 12 student on track to achieving their QCE?

Ask them to log in to their learning account at www.studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au , they will need their LUI (Learner Unique Identifier) number to do this. If they don’t have this please ask at school.

Year 11 Remind your student that every

Semester counts and they are working

towards gaining a QCE by the end of

Year 12. In order to get a QCE ,

students’ need to study three subjects

for 4 semesters, gain a pass in those

subjects and others to accumulate 20

points. In addition to this they must

achieve a pass in literacy and

numeracy. Year 11 students can also

login to their learning account.

Val Lane, Deputy Principal

NAPLAN

This week has been a big week for our junior students! Our 7s and 9s have been busy undertaking the NAPLAN tests. From all reports, they have worked really hard to achieve the best possible result. From 2018, NAPLAN will be making the move to online testing. NAPLAN assessment results are reported on scales which demonstrate how students have performed compared to established standards. As a school, we can use NAPLAN results to gauge where students are at with regards to literacy and numeracy, and target resources and instruction where it is needed most. Further information about the different scales and standards is available at https://www.nap.edu.au/results-and-reports/how-to-interpret

As we approach mid-term, many classes will have their mid-term assessments. Students have their assessment calendars, so should be aware of when all assessment has been scheduled. Any changes will be communicated home via the Head of Department. It is important that students are keeping on top of assessment in order to achieve their best result. The student diary is one way that students can keep track of what is due and can be used to organise study time.

For the second year in a row we

have been able to work with Chris

Andersen of Pacan Murray Gray

Stud. At school, students prepared

and learnt to lead and show two of

his heifers, Pacan Mystic and

Pacan Lorali. They then presented

them in the stud cattle section and

handlers, Justin Gillespie and

Maegan Nugent, did a wonderful

job with the heifers in the ring.

Pacan Lorali placed as reserve

champion heifer, British breeds.

Many thanks go to Chris and

Patricia Andersen for allowing us

to work with them and their Murray

Grey cattle. It is a valuable

learning experience for the

students to have this experience

and it is great to have this working

relationship with a local cattle

producer.

Cattle Handling at the Kilcoy Show

Students also participated in the

junior cattle judging and junior

cattle handling events. Coen Fry

and Suzannah Moroney

participated in the Prime Beef

Junior Judging on the Friday and

placed first and second

respectively. They also

participated in the Stud Cattle

Junior Judging and Handling.

Maegan Nugent, Justin Gillespie

and Ashleigh Richards also

participated in the junior handling

themselves and the school to an

excellent standard, well done to

all for their efforts and

commitment.

Certificate II in Rural Operations

Chappy Week 2017

A group of students are engaged in

completing a Certificate II in Rural

Operations. This program will run

for the duration of Years 11 and 12

one day a week. The vast majority

of the course work is delivered at

Kilcoy High School with a small

number of off-site excursions

required for some specialised

learning. Rural Training

Queensland is the Registered

Training Organisation engaged to

deliver this course. Students will be

working with additional resources

such as quad bikes, small engines

and chainsaws brought to our site

by RTQ to supplement our

resources when required.

The Kilcoy State High School

P & C has approved a ‘work wear’

shirt to be worn by students for this

type of work on their training days.

Commencing this term, as seen in

the photo, these students are now

wearing their new shirts with the

KSHS logo worn with jeans, work

boots and hat each Wednesday.

Chappy week highlights the many

facets of school chaplaincy and is

an opportunity (and a privilege)

for me as Chaplain to bless my

school community. This year I will

be running Chappy week

breakfast (on normal breakfast

club day) as well as some fun

lunch time activities for the

students. This year we are also

excited to run a family fun

obstacle course (Holt Bolt)

community event (Sat 3rd

June-

Save the date) as part of our

Chappy Week events (more

details to follow in coming

weeks).

Our students gathered at the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk with other students from Lowood and Toogoolawah on Thursday 27th April for the biannual Somerset Youth Leadership Forum. The forum, was organised by the Somerset Regional Council to give the young students in Somerset an opportunity to have a say about changes they would like to see in the region and further develop their leadership skills. Students worked with Nicole Gibson from The Rogue and Rouge Foundation, along with Somerset Regional Council and Kilcoy State High, to develop a project that addresses something important to them. Students then worked with Nicole Gibson here at school on the 3rd

May, where she guided students to the best action plan to start thinking about launching their projects. These projects will continue to be planned and developed at school before rolling them out school wide.

The students involved in the Youth Forum were: Michael Pollard, Thomas Webster, Blake Anderson, Libby Woodrow, Breanna James, Sienna Thompson, Riley Cochran, Mia Sheehan, Todd, McClure, Angela Mae Castro, Khi Anderson, Angel Kraut, Amelia Wolff, Michael Houstoun, Sophie Edwick, Jemima Hooper, Bea Pugal, Irish Fadriquela accompanied by Marilyn Messenger (Senior Coordinator) and Joshe Newton (Guidance Officer).

Visual Art Practices

At the end of Term 1, students from Year 11 Visual Art Practices were involved in National Youth Week in conjunction with Somerset Regional Council. Students engaged in a banner project where they created a banner design to represent the hobbies, interests and activities of the town’s youth. The banner was then enlarged and

printed to 1m x 2m, and was presented at the region’s National Youth Week conference as well as the local Skate Park event. On assembly this week, Deputy Mayor Dan Hall and Somerset Regional Council’s Youth Coordinator Michelle Francis presented the school with the banner and celebrated the students’ involvement in the project. The banner will now be on display in the office for viewing.

Thank you to the Year 11 Visual Art Practices students’ and Miss McCulloch (Visual Art teacher) for their commitment and enthusiasm towards this project.

Rivers Pointon was selected in the South East Zone Clay target team which shot a shoulder to shoulder event at the QLD state title shoot held at the Gemfields gun club at Emerald over the weekend of 28 to 30 April.

The zone shoot was held on Friday night under lights. This was the first time they have held this event

under lights and wow the clays were hard to see. It was a great event and the Junior team did really well but sadly they were pipped at the post.

Rivers shot all weekend. It was great experience for him as he has never shot at State level before. He also got to meet Olympic shooter Mitchel Iles at the shoot.
