    APPLICATION NOTE

    ATA8510-EK1 Components

ATA8510-EK1 evaluation kit is for demonstrating the Atmel®’s ATA8510 andATA8515 RF transceiver devices using a remote sensor for ambienttemperature measurement and a base station for displaying received sensordata. The kit includes the following components:

    • A base station with– Xplained PRO SAMD20 evaluation board– Xplained PRO OLED1 extension board– Xplained PRO ATA8510/15 extension board

    • A remote temperature sensor with ATA8510 (RF transceiver),AT30TS75A (temperature sensor) and an optional CMM-1923 (real-time clock) device

    • A micro USB cable for connection to a PC USB port or to an external5V/500mA power supply (not included)

    • A mini ISP adapter for programming and debugging the remote sensor• A 433MHz whip antenna for mounting on the Xplained PRO

    ATA8510/15 extension board

    Caution:

The remote sensor requires a CR2032 coin cell battery which is not includedin the kit.

  • 1. Getting StartedThe base station boards are connected as shown in Figure -1:

    • The Xplained PRO OLED1 board is connected to the EXT3 extension header.• The Xplained PRO ATA8510/15 to the EXT1 extension header.• The 433MHz whip antenna is mounted on the X4 connector of the Xplained PRO ATA8510/15

board.• These boards are powered using the USB cable connected to the debug USB connector of the

Xplained PRO SAMD20 board.• The USB cable can be connected to a USB power supply (not included) with 5V/500mA for stand-

alone operation.• Atmel® recommends installing the Atmel Studio 6 before connecting the USB cable to the PC for

software development or when using the virtual COM port connection. Atmel Studio 6 can bedownloaded from http://www.atmel.com. The software package includes the installation of allrequired USB drivers used for debugging and for communication with the virtual COM port.

If Atmel Studio 6 is not installed, a warning message appears during connection of the USB cable to thePC. The warning can be ignored when not using the virtual COM port or when not debugging.

The OLED shows a welcome screen after connecting the USB power and waits for the reception of avalid RF signal:

The remote sensor automatically starts after inserting the CR2032 coin cell on the bottom side of theremote sensor (be sure to observe correct polarity). The sensor repeats sending RF telegrams at 2sintervals when the optional RTC module is installed. The OLED shows the temperature value from thesensor on the OLED with a resolution of 1°C. The time interval between the RF signal reception inseconds and the signal strength rssi on the base station and RSSI on the sensor is also shown:

    ___________________| dt=2s rssi=221 || || T=22°C || RSSI=128 ||___________________|

The transmission of an RF telegram can also be started by pressing the S2 button on the remote sensor. The display can be switched to different modes with buttons 1 - 3 on the Xplained PRO OLED1 extensionboard to show statistics on received RF telegrams, settings for the RF link, or the COM port settings.
