1 Introduction
This document is a quick start guide for the “plot interface” (§2), “MDB interface” (§3), “Merginator” (§4) and Syntool (§5) of the Pi-MEP platform.
2 Plot Interface
The plot interface allows extraction and plots of satellite and in situ SSS time-series at virtual buoys location, or some time series of statistics (averages, standard deviation, …) of SSS data or scatterplots of these data over some user-selected spatial and temporal domains. This tool relies on “Datalaps”which is the “time series real-timeextractor”: itallows fast access to data available given multi-criteria requests (over regional areasusually),togeneratetimeseriesplotsorstatisticalmaps,evenwhenusingdozenyearsofdata. It relies on Big Data technology for the efficient storage and manipulation ofgeoreferencedtimeseries. 1.2 General Layout of the interface
Theimageabovedescribesthelayoutoftheinterface.Theleftsidecontainsthecontrolsforselectinganareaandatimerange,selectingthesatellite/insituproductstobeanalysed,foraddinganewplotandfortheconfigurationofeachtypeofplot:(multi-)timeseries,scatterplots, and map charts (Hovmöller diagrams, and histograms shall be added in the nextupdatedversionoftheplatform).Therightsidecontainstheresultingplots.AllplotscanbeexportedasPNGimagestobeeasilyembeddedindocuments.Timeseries,scatterplotsandmapsprovidesomeadditionalinteractivity to focus on a subdomain (zoom/pan) or a specific data point (value undercursor).AmenualsooffersthepossibilitytodownloadthedataasCSVfilesforthesethreeplots.

Usingthemaponthetopleftmenuandthe“drawarectangle”selectiontool(middleleftblackrectanglepanelofthemap)andthezoomfunctions,theuser-chosendomainofanalysiscanbeselected.
By clicking on the blue rectangle (chosen domain) on the map, the latitude/longitudeboundariesoftherectangulardomainofanalysiscanbepreciselyenteredandselected.1.4 Period Selection
Theperiodofanalysiscanbedefinedbytheuserusingtheselectiontoollocatedjustbelowthemapontheleftmenu.Startingandendingdatecanbedefinedusing:“From”to“To”.

1.5 Selection of the type of plots
Usingtheblue“+”buttonontheleftmenu(atthebottomleft),theusercanchoosethetypeofplottobevisualizeontherightpanelsbeyond:
• TimeSeriesPlot• ScatterPlot• MapPlot
Each“cyancolour”menubarontheleftindicatesanewtypeofplotwhichwillappearontherightpanelswiththeappearingorderontherightasdefinedbytheorderofthesuccessive“cyan-bar”plots intheleftpanels.Theplotswillappearupdatedontherightpanelsonlyafterclickingonthe“updateplots”buttonifaselectionparameterhasbeenchangedbythetheuser.Eachplotcanberemovedbyusingthe“II”Removeplotbuttonontherightpartofeachcyancolorbar.

1.5 Time series plots
• Ifonthepreviousstep,theuserselectsa“TimeSeries”Plot,thenanewcyan-barmenuentitled“TimeSeries”willappearontheleftmenu.Thenameofthetimeseriescanbegivenbytheuserbyclickingandchangingthetitledirectlyinthe“cyan-bar”.
• Usingthe“TimeMonthly”buttonlocatedbelowthecyan-barmenu,theusercan
choosetheTimeaggregationmethodwitheither:Ø RawvaluesØ YearlyaØ MonthlyØ Daily
• Usingthe“Average”button,theusercanchoosethespatio-temporalstatisticswhichwillbeusedforgeneratingthetimeseriesusingeither:

• Selectingtheproductsandvariablestobevisualized.
The“+”smallbuttonbeloweachcyan-barontherightcanbeusedtoaddsomeproducts
tobevisualizedinthetimeseries.Whenclickingonthisbuttonanewvariablewillappearunderthe“cyanbar”.Theusercanthenmakehis/herownchoicebyselectingtheproductin the list/menuproposed. The list first shows all the Pi-MEP satellite SSS products andassociatedvariables,andthenfollowsinthe list thevariables includedintotheplatform-generatedmatch-upsatellite/insitufiles.Thenamingconventionisdefinedasfollows:mdb_nameofsatelliteSSSproduct_nameofinsitudata-nameofvariable.
Theusercanselectthecolorofthecurve(ontheright)foreachselectedproduct/variablebyclickingonthecoloredcirclelocatedontheleftofeachproduct.

• Exportingthedata
Thetimeseriesandplotsgeneratedbytheuserandvisibleontherightplotpanelscanbeexportedbytheusersinimageformat(PNG,JPEG,PDFSVG)orinnumericaltablesformat(csvandxls)usingthetoprightbuttonofeachplot.
• CreatingandsharingLinksofsomeuserpre-configured
plotinterfacepage:
Thestateoftheleftsideoftheinterface(i.e.thearea,timerangeandplots options) are stored in thewebpageURL, it is thereforepossibletocreatelinkstoapre-configuredplotsinterface.Thelinksofauser-preconfiguredpagecanbecopiedusingthelinksymbolonthebottomrightof the left-menu.These linkscan thenbeused inotherwebapplicationswhichdefine(orlettheuserdefine)similarparameters to provide a seamless transition between theapplications.1.6 Scatterplots

Searchingmatch-upsandextractingtheassociateddatacanbeperformedusingtheMDBqueryinterface,awebpagewhichcontainsaformtodefinethesearchfilters,providesmeanstovisualizetheresultsasplotsornumericaltablesandletstheuserdownloadthemasCSVfiles.

Numerical tables (csv, xls) show statistics about the extractedmatch-ups: number ofcollocations, mean bias, variance and root-mean-square deviation and the time seriesthemselves.The timeseriesandplotsgeneratedby theuserandvisibleon therightplotpanelscanbeexportedbytheusersinimageformat(PNG,JPEG,PDFSVG)orinnumericaltablesformat(csvandxls)usingthetoprightbuttonofeachplot.ThefilteredMDBdatacanalsobedirectlyextractedincsvformatusingthe“downloadcsv”menuontheleft.
4 Merginator
Thistoolisusefultoexplorespatialpatternsofnumerousdatasetsataglance.Forthemomenttheproductsshownintheinterfacearepre-selected.Amenuwillbesoonaddedtobeablevisualizingotherdatasets.
