SOLUTION

STEP 1 Identify the x - intercepts. Because p = – 3 and q = 1, the x - intercepts occur at the points (– 3, 0) and (1, 0).

STEP 2 Find the coordinates of the vertex.

y = 2(– 1 + 3)(– 1 – 1) = – 8
