Past President (2010) and Northeast Regional Director(2001-2004) Beverly White passed away in Gillette frompancreatic cancer on January 15, 2018. Beverly's life wascelebrated on January 24 in Gillette. Bev was born inThermopolis and grew up in Shoshoni. She was akindergarten teacher for 27 years at Lakeview Elementary inGillette. She retired in 2004. Her family was mostimportant in her life. She loved gardening, reading andquilting. During her last months she worked hard tocomplete her quilting projects and was able to present themto those she loved. Bev's talents and kindness will beremembered. Virginia

Beverly was the NE Regional Director and WSQGPresident. She planned the first Ucross Quilt Retreat. Wewere packed like sardines in a can, but what amazing fun wehad. I knew we had to keep doing this. Welcome to the New Year! Ihope your holidays were whatyou expected them to be. I doknow that not all celebrationswent as expected, because a closefriend’s father passed awayunexpectedly. Which is a realdowner, but also a reminder that

all of us have both good and bad days / weeks / months.I hope yours are on the better side of things.

For New Year’s Day, I went to a local all-day sewevent. Someone that I respect once told me that as theNew Year begins, so goes the rest of the year. I hopeso! I did my prep before we left to visit our son and hisfamily for Christmas. Part of my preparation to go sew“out” was to pick a UFO to work on first, which Imoved substantially towards completion at home beforeI started something new at the event. Inspired by thatmoment of progress, I completed the piecing I hadstarted at the event and returned to the UFO. I now havetwo projects to quilt and the question becomes, quiltmyself, which will take a bit of time to “design” and do,or quilt by check, which takes a different bit of time butrelieves me to start working on some other UFO orproject. These two items are right at my boundary lineof being able to quilt myself. My dilemma has to dowith both the time it takes, and the number of UFO’sand the number of other things I would like to start andfinish this year. I’ll let you know which way I go nexttime! As for the color challenge I wrote about last time,I did finish a portion of it in time for the viewer’s choicecompetition and got some complements on my quilting.

I will go to a sewing retreat within the week of thewriting of this news item. I have again chosen a UFO towork on first, and then some things that were once highon my list to do and have morphed over time into“bumps within the fabric stash”. Some are gifts forothers, some are charity items, and some are simplyflights of fancy that I wanted to make at some point. Butthey often were bumped down the list because of otherhigher priority or urgent things (like weeding the gardenor shearing sheep). My promise to myself is to work ongetting some of them done this winter – both to reducethe lumps and bumps in the stash but also to alleviatesome of the “coulda shoulda woulda” litany

...Northeast continued from page 3that runs through me when I need to find somethingburied in the stash and find these self-inflicted traps. I’vealso decided that some of these projects need to find anew home because they are no longer of interest to me. Sonow I am contemplating how to go about rehoming them.I don’t think it is fair to offer them as a give-away at anevent since all of us have our own sense of color andpatterns, so I am thinking gifting one of the local charityquilt groups with the fabric and maybe even the patternsseparately. Sometimes I wonder how the rest of you dealwith this. Maybe you have more self-control when itcomes to acquisition, or maybe you are more persistentthan I am about doing things in order, or maybe you aremore like me than I realize!

There is an upcoming Mystery Quilt event in Sheridansponsored by the Creative Fiber Guild. On February 10, atthe Holiday Inn in Sheridan from 9 AM to 4 PM. We willhave an adventure. Buffy Shatek is leading this mysteryevent. You can call her to see if there is still space to joinus (307-752-3525). The cost for CFG members is $15,and the cost for non-members is $25.

Another upcoming Creative Fiber Guild event inSheridan is a Resist Dyeing class to be taught by MarieShirley Jones at the Whitney Center on Saturday March3, 2018. Give me a call if you are interested in joining usfor this event. The cost is $30.00 for non-members and$20 for members.

Buffalo Quilting Gals had a Mondo Bag workshop onJanuary 13. I hope to be able to inform you moretimely of their other upcoming events.

I want to extend a reminder about the ET Quilt Shop inBuffalo challenge to use up some of your stash to makea Christmas quilt called “What’s under the tree?” Thechallenge wraps up with a showcase in March, completewith prizes for the viewer’s choice winners. There is notyet a date for the showcase pending weatheroccurrences. There is also a new challenge beginningthat is a Block of the Month, and I hear there will bespecial prizes for those who complete three challengesthis calendar year. Kate says there is lots of new fabric, and there will be a monthly sewing machine service andrepair opportunity. The first of these is scheduled forJanuary 22.

The Strawberry Patch Quilt Shop in Newcastle is havingan “Espresso Ornament Day” where there is an espressocup ornament and kit to work on, and they will be havingespresso to go with it! This will happen on February 14.

There will also be a “Cheesecake Ornament Day” onMarch 14, where the ornament is to be shaped like a sliceof cheesecake, complete with “calorie counts” (thinkuplifting messages) and fabric weights in the kit that arein grams. Sounds like a hoot to me, especially since therewill be a cheesecake tasting too. Their winter hours areWednesday thru Saturday, 10 AM – 5 PM.WitchesStitches Quilt Shop in Hulett has an informal machineembroidery session on the last Wednesday of the monthfrom 10 AM - 3 PM. Their winter hours are 10 AM – 4PM Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Bring a lunch, a project, and beverages inspill-proof containers. Their winter hours are Monday,Wednesday, and Saturday 9 AM – 4 PM and Friday 9 AM– 5 PM.I hope that the weather and road conditions treat you well, and that you get some quilting done during this “shut in”time of the year! Happy New Year! I loveJanuary and February and evenMarch! It is the down side toquilt classes, camps, and the upside to free time to work onUFO’s and to catch up on quilts

with deadlines passed and promised. I even like theweather because I can actually stay inside and use asolid block of time to see the results of my efforts.

Let me catch you up on what has been happening sincethe weather has turned cold:

The Goshen County Quilters Christmas Party was acarry-in brunch, followed by show and tell and a coupleof games. Members were asked to bring gifts to donateto the kids at Saint Josephs Children’s Home, and theyresponded by filling two huge boxes. The gifts, alongwith 25 comfort quilts were delivered to St. Jo’s thefollowing week to help make Christmas a little brighterfor the 70 Children and youth at the home. The clubchallenge for 2017-2018 is to create a small (36”x36”)piece using just two fabrics. That should produce somereal striking pictures. I can’t wait!

Cheyenne Heritage Quilters did an unveiling ofDresden Plate quilts as part of their Christmas Party. This was the culmination of 10 months of a challengeto produce different Dresden plates in a round robinformat. We started with 27 members starting with aDresden plate, and finished with 20 dresden quilt topsdisplayed. It was a wonderful impromptu show. Then

we did a couple ofgames. and ate foodshaped like Dresdenplates (pieces of pie, cheesecake, etc). The club challengefor this year has notbeen announced.

Around the Block,Cheyenne’s onlyquilt store isexpanding the shopto have space forclasses. Thisremodeling will becompleted byJanuary 18th. Andthen large classes can be held. The shop offers a Blockof the Month club, Embroidery Club, Knitting Club andothers.

The Southeast Regional Spring UFO retreat held atLCCC in Cheyenne will be March 23-25th 2018. Thepersonal e-mail invitations will be going out the end ofFebruary. Please be sure to renew your WSQGmembership because that is the list that gets the firstnotice to reserve seating for the retreat. I think everyone is recoveringfrom holiday celebrations. I don’t

have a lot of news to report except that everyone hasbeen partying. If you remember last issue I said wewere having venue problems in Casper for QuiltWyoming. I’m happy to report all has been resolved.Quilt Wyoming 2018 will be held at Central WyomingCollege in Riverton. So mark your calendars. Makeyour travel arrangements. Renew your WSQGmembership and get ready for a great time. With threenational teachers and ten regional teachers all should beable to find a class for their interests. If you know ofsomeone who is interested in quilting but hasn’t madethe plunge yet we’ll be having a quilt camp inconjunction with Quilt Wyoming. This camp will takethe beginner from learning how to cut fabric all the wayto binding and putting on the finishing touches. Forthose who are helping with the planning, our nextQW18 planning meeting is at 10:30 on February 3rd atthe Casper Senior Center (1831 E. 4th Street).

It seems everyone was partying this past December. The Never Sweat Needlers (Dubois) had their annualChristmas party on December 14th at the HeadwatersConvention Center with a choice of prime rib or cornishhen stuffed with wild rice and all the fixings (includingthree kinds of cheesecake!). Pictured

delicious food, there was a gift exchange among the2017 Secret Quilters. New names were drawn for 2018,if one wished to participate. Then all circled up for agrab bag exchange (amongst much laughter and"stealing"!). As a group we each made a 10-1/2" quiltblock and presented the blocks to Leigh Tuckey(president of the guild), as she and Bert will celebratetheir 50th wedding anniversary in March! (Who knewthere were so many different ideas on what "gold"was!)

Their 2018 raffle quilt (for their August show) was justmailed off to Virginia Ohr for quilting. It's based on"Kjestin's Legacy" by Quail Valley Quilts but theyhaven'tchosen theirname for itas yet. It'sprettyawesome! They arealso busyworking onQuilts ofValor (theyneed 22 forthis year'sveterans)and makingHospice Quilts for the Riverton House. They also planto teach a beginner's quilt class in April through CWCat the Headwaters, and of course there's the 2018President's Challenge to work on before their Junemeeting.

The Popo Agie Quilters (Lander) also celebrated onDecember 4th with their annual potluck. The food wasexcellent and Show & Tell is always lots of fun seeingwhat everyone has been working on. Mark yourcalendars for their fall show scheduled for 21-22September and a quilter’s retreat 6-8 April at the LanderSenior Center. ...Central continued on page 11

SOUTHWESTGinny Hartman

Happy New Year! One ofthe best things aboutJanuary is the wonderfulweather. Yup, that good oldsnow and ice that keeps ushome. This year the snow

and ice has not been as deep as last year, but there isstill enough that people are not making plans for bigevents. That means more time to hunker down andquilt!

It is this lack of activity that will make this a shortreport. I sent an e-mail to every member of thesouthwest region asking them for any news that theywould like to share about their upcoming plans, bothpersonally and with their groups. I posed a fewquestions, just to stimulate some conversation.

Guild news:1. Did your group do anything special for theholiday season?2. Does your group have any events scheduledduring the coming year that you would likementioned?

Personal thoughts:1. What are your quilting goals for the coming year?2. What is your favorite place to shop for fabric?3. Do you have a favorite new tool that you lookforward to using this coming year?4. Do you have any special projects planned?5. Why do you love quilting?6. What would you like to tell the next generation ofsewers about quilting?

Pictures are welcome!

I heard back from only one member, Rene Moore. She wrote “We look forward to Quilting on the Green. My favorite shopping is the Shop Hops and Row byRow, with my husband who is retired. I am stillworking (must have insurance). We just purchased aBabylock Longarm so have planned a trip to St Louisto learn as much from them as possible at their longarmtraining class. Hope to expand my shopping spree ofRow by Rows through the route we take to get thereand back. The picture is of my granddaughter and

myself learning about the new longarm.”

Since I should not ask others to do something I am notwilling to do myself, I am including my answers to afew of the questions I posed. I am also looking forwardto this year’s southwest region events includingQuilting on the Green. We have several opportunities toview quilts, and learn some new skills right here insouthwest Wyoming. I will try to keep you informed asI learn more. As far as shopping goes, I am verythankful for the quilt shops that operate here in ourregion. I also look forward each year to the big quiltshow (recently renamed the Utah Quilting & SewingMarketplace) held each May in Sandy, Utah. As far asmy big projects for the year, I have two. I attempt toenter a challenge quilt each year at Quilt Wyoming inJuly. This year’s theme is Roaming Wyoming, and Ihave that quilt designed in my mind. I will begin tocreate it soon! My second big project involves usingsome of the antique linens that I found in my mother’slinen closet. I will be incorporating 1930 reproductionfabrics into the quilt as a tribute to her 1933 birth year.I have this one underway, and look forward to finishingit before this winter is over.

There are a few other items that I have learned thatneed to be mentioned. The Sweetwater County QuiltGuild is sponsoring a display at the county museum inGreen River. They are featuring miniature quilts. Thetotal perimeter of the quilt must be 96 inches orsmaller. The display will be in place by February 1, andwill be up for a couple of months.

Patchwork of Friends in Kemmerer meets on the 3rdSaturday of each month for a time of sewing and quiltingtogether. However, last Spring the place where they meet, the Berta Penney Memorial Methodist Church,

experienced a flood in the basement, and the group has beenunable to meet. However, the area has now been cleaned andfreshened up, and they are back in business. They areplanning on getting together on the 3rd Saturday of January, for the first time in many months. They invite others of thearea to join them. They meet from 9 AM to 4 PM, andusually share a potluck lunch.

My last item is the Wyoming Loving Hands Quilt Workshopwhich is coming up soon – on March 16-17 here inKemmerer. We are planning on once again using theoccasion of National Quilting Day, on March 17, tocelebrate the joy of quilting by giving back to ourcommunity. We’ll be getting together to sew Fiddle (alsocalled Fidget) quilts for those who suffer from dementia andAlzheimer’s disease. We will also focus on encouraging newquilters to give quilting a try. If you are interested in hearingmore about this event, email me at [email protected].

There it is, a short and sweet report. I have to admit to beinga bit distracted as I write. Truth is, I won’t be hunkering

down quite yet to sew this January, because I have a newgrandbaby (born last evening at 11:09) that I will be going toPinedale to meet tomorrow! I get to spend a week with myson and daughter-in-law and little Abigail MichelleHartman. Some “activities” are worth giving up a littlequilting time, and in my book, this is one of them!

Now you can have a copy of Barb Gorges quilting tipsin one very nice book. She has added some additionalinformation since she published How to Help yourQuilt Live to 100 articles in Patchwords. The bookwas edited by Jeananne Wright, certified AQSappraiser and antique quilt expert. There are manyillustrations throughout the book. See the ad to see thevarious formats and prices.

Two chapters, “Make” and “Test”, are addressed toquilters, explaining how to make a sturdy quilt. Theother chapter topics are useful to anyone who owns aquilt, from “Use” and “Display” to typical care topics,“Air,” “Wash” and “Dry,” in addition to safe ways to“Store” and “Ship” quilts.

Chapters on “Appraisal” and “Insurance” might helpfuture generations of quilt owners value quilts more ifappraisal and insurance documents are available tothem. But the best predictor of a long life for a quilt isthe maker’s signature on the quilt and otherinformation on an attached label.

Gorges studied quilt care issues for 17 years whileproprietor of Gorges Quilt Labels, providing quilt carelabels to quilters in every state. “My hope is that thegreater number of knowledgeable quilt owners thereare, the fewer premature quilt deaths there will be,”says Gorges.

Hola Amigas (hellofriends!) I am snowbirdingin Mexico with several handquilting and appliquéprojects! Loving the warmweather and long beachwalks looking for shells and

sea birds.

From the reports I got from NW, looks like lots ofquilting is happening.

Vicki hasincreased the size of the March 15-18 retreat toaccommodate any retreaters who are cranky that I amnot doing my usual April retreat (going to Paducahinstead!!). Please contact Vicki asap atfriendsandco.net or 307-527-7217.

From Linda Macdonald and Marybeth Richardson:The Textile Artists of Greater Yellowstone (TAGY)members are quilt artists who live throughout the GreatBasin area. The group has a large art quilt display at the1st Bank of Wyoming in Powell for the month ofJanuary, and the display will move to Cody for themonth of February.

Paintbrush Piecers' Quilt Guild (PPQG) elected somenew officers for 2018. President - MarybethRichardson; Vice-President - Barbara Pike; Secretary -Jeanne Dycus; and Treasurer - Lili Turnell. In 2018 theYellowstone Quilt Fest will become an ad hoc

committee of the Quilt Guild, and a quilt show will beheld in September with Barbara Pike as coordinator.Several members of the Guild will continue to makequilts for local veterans in the coming year.

From Kathy Hammond, Old West Quilt Guild,Thermopolis:There is not a whole lot happening in Thermopolis.Last year we spent time making Christmas Treeornaments. Each month someone showed us how tomake an ornament. We each made at least two (wethen could keep one and donate one). The donatedornaments were used to decorate a tree for our yearlyFestival of Trees auction. The tree was beautiful andearned the second highest amount. During the month ofJanuary we are making blocks for the Ventura ModernQuilt Guild. They have sent out a message askingquilters to make a block to donate to them. They aremaking quilts from these blocks for people who losthomes in the recent fires in California. If people areinterested, I would suggest they go towww.venturamodernquiltguild.com. Once there go tothe info about the Thomas fire. There is a site you canclick on in the first paragraph--www.keptinstitches.comfor the pattern. It is simple and I think not only will itbe fun for our guild to make, but I think it would be agreat opportunity for people who know how to makethis block to share how to make it with a new quilter. Our guild is going to make our blocks from colorsfound in Thermopolis. We'll add some info about usand send them as quickly as we can.

From Becky Lamb, Cottonwood Quilters, Worland:The Cottonwood Quilters of Worland are happy towelcome 2018. We look forward to many finished quiltprojects but more importantly we look forward to funand friendship, learning and sharing and a little fabricstash enhancement. Our meetings are held the secondMonday of each month in the basement of the CatholicChurch. Each month we have a program, presented bya guild member, show and tell, a fat quarter exchange, and a few laughs. All quilters are invited to join us at 7PM. This year will bring a small quilt exchange, agroup quilt for a charity donation, group meetings, apicnic, a brown bag exchange, a fabulous Christmasdinner and hope for a happy future.

Happy Quilting. Michelle Quick
