KAREN MILLER of New York

2018 featured artists

As a teenager, Karen learned the needle arts—from garment sewing, to embroidery, to knitting—but her obsession with quilting didn’t bloom until her late 40s. Once the passion for free motion quilting blossomed, Karen never looked back. She quickly learned that piecing wasn’t her forte, but applique, design and free motion quilting on a domestic machine made her heart sing. Writing and publishing comprehensive tutorials and creative designs for Moda Bake Shop and her blog, Karen is best known for her Redbird and Berries Mini Quilt, which ranks high among the most popular online patterns. Determined to enhance her FMQ skills, Karen

furthered her training with Linda Hrcka and Karen McTavish—the best of the best award-winning quilters. Karen’s a retired computer programmer—a background which makes her approach to quilting and teaching a bit detailed.

Redbird Quilt Co. was created in 2014, and with that Karen took to the road, sharing a variety of quilty workshops with guilds, shops and private groups hungry to learn to quilt on domestic machines. Basics, doodles, feathers, rulers, McTavishing—allow Karen’s passion for FMQ help improve your free motion quilting skills. Be sure to follow @RedbirdQuiltCo on social media and let Karen’s home machine quilting inspire you!

Karen lives in the Finger Lakes Region of New York surrounded by a fantastic array of forests, lakes, farmland and families. She and her husband share their home with one crazy Yellow Nape Amazon, Cayman. Their children are grown and have blessed them with eight special little grandchildren (of which the three girls LOVE to sew with Gramma Karen.)

KAREN COMBS of central TennesseeA native of Michigan, Karen Combs began quilting in 1973 while still in high school. She has a degree in library science and has worked at many state, city and school libraries before finding her calling as a professional quilting instructor, writer and designer. Her quilts are known for taking a traditional pattern and giving it her own unique twist. Karen is intrigued with quilts of illusions and has been designing quilts with a 3D look for several years.

Karen is the author of Optical Illusions for Quilters (AQS), Combing Through Your Scraps (AQS), Floral Illusions (AQS), 3 Quilters Celebrate the 4 Seasons (AQS) & 3D Fun with Pandora’s Box, co-authored with Sharlene Jorgenson of Quilting from the Heartland. Her newest book is Celtic Pieced Illusions (AQS).

She has been a fabric designer for almost two decades, working with several New York-based fabric houses and now working with Troy’s Riverwoods Collections. She has created more than 100 different collections.

Karen’s work has appeared in the Silver Dollar City Wallhanging Challenge, the Hoffman Challenge and in many magazines such as Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, Traditional Quilter, Traditional Quiltworks, Sew Many Quilts, McCall’s Quilting and Lady’s Circle Patchwork. She was the “Feature Teacher” in the March 1997 issue of Traditional Quiltworks.

Nominated for teacher of the year in 1995, 2000 and in 2005 by Professional Quilter Journal, Karen travels internationally to teach her techniques and methods. In 2012, she was honored to judge the IQA Quilt Show.

Karen has appeared on several TV quilting shows, among them Quilting from the Heartland—Series 700, Quilt Central, Quilt America and Simply Quilts show 411.In addition to traveling to guilds and quilt shows, Karen’s new venture is her online class with Craftsy. Karen now lives in the rolling hills of middle Tennessee with her husband Rick and their sweet (but willful) Shih Tzu, Benji. Their grown children, Angela and Josh visit when they can!
