    FOR RELEASE: NOVEMBER 2, 2015

NEW YORKERS WANT TO KEEP ON TIPPING,

    QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS;

MANHATTAN V. BOROUGHS DIVIDE ON TAXI TV

Eliminating restaurant tipping and charging higher menu prices to compensate employees is a

bad idea, New York City voters say 5536 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll released

today. No party, gender, borough or age group supports the idea.

By 5639 percent, voters say they would be unwilling to pay an extra 20 percent for arestaurant meal if it means eliminating the tip, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack)

University Poll finds. Again, there is no group in support of the idea.

The lowest opposition to no-tip dining comes from Manhattan voters who say 48 41

percent that eliminating tips is a bad idea and who are unwilling 4945 percent to pay more for

    a meal and tip less.

New York City voters support 7027 percent raising the minimum wage for fast food

workers to $15 per hour over the next three years. Republicans are opposed 6039 percent, but

every other group supports the measure.

A $15 minimum wage will not result in restaurant closings and loss of jobs, voters say

5636 percent. And voters say 5733 percent they would be willing to pay more for fast food

so workers could get higher wages. Republicans are the only group unwilling to pay more,

    5535 percent.

Heres a tip for restaurateurs: Keep the tip. MostNew Yorkers like this dining

tradition just the way it is, said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

What would the poll show if we just surveyed the people who work for tips?

While they dont want to give up tipping and pay more for waiter/waitress service, New

Yorkers are willing to pay more for fast food to help those workers earn more.

There is a borough divide as New York City voters say 4540 percent keep the TVs in

the back of taxi cabs. Manhattan voters say 4936 percent that the TVs should be removed. In

the so-called outer boroughs, support for taxi TVs ranges from 4241 percent in Brooklyn to

    5332 percent in Queens.

The taxi TVs are a pleasant diversion,45 percent of voters say, while 41 percent say

    they are an annoyance.

Voters 18 to 34 years old say 5735 percent that taxi TVs should stay and 5036

percent that they are a pleasant diversion.

Those TV screens in taxicabsan amenity or a pain? It depends where you watch

them. More Manhattanites, who ride a lot of taxis, would like to throw out the TVs, Carroll

said. But taxi TVs are popular in the other boroughs, where people dont see so many cabs.

Only 21 percent of New York City voters have used Uber, but the app-driven car service

has a 4316 percent favorability rating.

Traditional car service is the choice of 41 percent of voters, with 24 percent for yellow

cabs and 19 percent for Uber.

Voters are divided 4241 percent on limiting the number of Uber cars on New York

City streets, but say 5037 percent that limiting Uber cars would not reduce traffic.

Elected officials are trying to limit Uber because of campaign donations from the yellow

cab industry, 58 percent of voters say, while 16 percent say officials are acting in the citys best

    interest.

From October 2228, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,155 New York City voters,

with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell

    phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public

opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia,

Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
