Mosaic MuralVisit the Trent Port Historical Society’s Mosaic Mural located in Downtown Trenton. More than 3,500 photographs were used by Prescott artist Chuck Street to create the giant piece of outdoor art work.

It’s not only a historical record of Quinte West, but a year in the life of a city illustrated in photographs.

The mural not only depicts famous people, important locations, but the faces and activities of hundreds of city residents. It is a time capsule of the past and a snapshot of day-to-day life in the city.

A film strip flows out of a giant movie reel, representing Trenton’s movie years when the town was known as Hollywood North. On the film strip are pictures of historic buildings and locations such as the old town hall, the Murray Canal, the Trenton Cooperage and the Bata shoe factory to name a few.

Also pictured are former mayors, reeves and

councillors, a Harvard trainer and the CFB Trenton water tower.

The mural is 64 feet wide and 14 feet high consisting of 17 panels. The 58 numbered mosaic zones are on a map where donors can find the pictures of their family or group. Maps are available at our Visitor Centres. Why not visit our civic mural on the side of the Community Policing building in downtown Trenton and have fun finding familiar faces from among those of Trenton’s citizens, both past and present.

find YouR Roots… Quinte West has a rich historical past. From Samuel de Champlain’s first visit to our future town to the amalgamation of four municipalities in 1998 that led to what is now one large city, Quinte West has many stories to tell, all of which have shaped this unique community.

Many of the families living in Quinte West today can trace their families back to the United Empire Loyalists. Increasingly, many people are coming to Quinte West to trace their heritage. The Quinte Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is housed in the Quinte West Public Library where users find a wealth of information and genealogy research assistance. The Ontario Genealogical Society is a not-for-profit organization managed entirely by very knowledgeable volunteers. The Quinte Branch also maintains a database of names that are painstakingly recorded from church baptism records, cemetery transcriptions, genealogies, census and newspaper records.

For information, please contact: Quinte Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society, Quinte West Public Library 7 Creswell Drive, Trenton, ON K8V 5R6, Tel: 613-394-3381, ext. 3328

PioneeR cemeteRiesCemeteries and their ties to churches make them an ideal starting point for anyone interested in tracing their family history or conducting genealogical research. Quinte West has more than 20 marked and unmarked pioneer cemeteries. Until the turn of the 20th century, churches were the primary record-keepers in rural places like Quinte West. For a listing of Cemeteries in Quinte West visit www.quintewest.ca.

Genealogy

For over 50 years, The Ontario Genealogical Society has been working to encourage, bring together and assist people interested in the pursuit of family history.

We do this with the hard work of many volunteers who work on heritage projects and help uphold genealogical standards.

At Bleasdell Boulder Conservation Area, you can take a journey through time with a short hike to the ‘Bleasdell Boulder’, one of the largest known glacial erratics in North America, estimated to be 2.3 billion years old. The Bleasdell Boulder,

also known as the Glen Miller Rock, was studied by Reverend William Bleasdell in the 1800s who wrote of the rock in scientific journals and so brought it to the attention of geologists across Canada. The Boulder measures 13.4 metres long, 7.3 metres wide and 6.7 metres high (44’ x 24’ x 22’). That’s almost three story’s tall! Apart from the Bleasdell Boulder, you will see a wide variety of trees, flowers, and ferns and an abundance of birds and wildlife.

Sager Conservation Area offers picnicking, trails and a scenic lookout. The area is part of a glacial feature known as Oak Lake Island, a series of large drumlins that formed an island in glacial Lake Iroquois. The drumlin in the conservation area is one of the highest points of land in the area and provides an excellent point from which to view the surrounding countryside including part of the Trent River Valley. A short 1 kilometre trail starts at the base of the hill and climbs steeply to a 9 metre (30ft) tall lookout tower, offering scenic panoramic views of the area. Once you reach the top, interpretive signs tell a story of some of the natural and cultural features of the area.

mount PelionOff of Dufferin Avenue, Trenton

Designated as a historical site, Mt. Pelion is a drumlin 191 feet above the Bay of Quinte created by glacial movement. The origin of Mt. Pelion’s name is Greek but the story of why it was called Pelion has been lost to time. Samuel De Champlain passed through this area in 1615 with a war party of 500 Huron Indians and most certainly scaled Mt. Pelion to survey the surrounding area. The cannon that sits atop Mt. Pelion is a British Royal Navy Cannon dated 1808 and was placed at the pinnacle in 1880. What a great view of the city!

muRRaY canalThe Murray Canal connects the Bay of Quinte to Presqu’ile Bay, off Lake Ontario. The canal was manmade in the 1880’s to accommodate burgeoning shipping routes and to avoid open lake navigation. The Murray Canal is bridged at County Road 64 and Carrying Place. Overnight mooring is permitted at each bridge, with public toilets and picnic tables. There is a native portage trail existing across the narrow band of land between the two bays which is known as the Old Portage Road. It claims to be part of the oldest road in Ontario.

The Memorial is a beautiful, permanent monument honouring our Canadian soldiers – the men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the war in Afghanistan. The entire project is being funded solely by Canadians honouring Canadian soldiers through the Give To Honour Those Who Gave campaign, with no government assistance.

Located in Trenton, Ontario’s Bain Park on the beautiful Bay of Quinte, and with Canadian Forces Base Trenton – Canada’s largest Air Force Base – nearby, the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial is a fitting tribute not far from where so many repatriation ceremonies occurred and at the beginning of our fallen soldiers’ journey along the Highway of Heroes, from Trenton to Toronto.

The entire site is designed to be reflective and contemplative in character and harmonize with its surroundings. Within the Memorial’s circular form, two granite benches provide seating for those who come to reflect and enjoy the peace and beauty of the Memorial site and park which is open year-round.

Located in Wallbridge, Old Sidney Town Hall Park has

been created to acknowledge the distinction that Wallbridge

holds as the centre of Sidney Township. It is the home of

“Ontario’s Oldest Municipal Government” since on January 1, 1850; Sidney Township became

the first municipality to be incorporated by the Province of Ontario. Enjoy a picnic or just

a few moments to reflect in this quiet

residential park.

A larger than life clock stands 90 feet above the heart of downtown

Trenton. Built in 1888, this City landmark was constructed as

part of the federal post office/ customs house and served as the

City Hall from the 1960’s to 2004.

Quinte West artist Doug Comeau designed a coin for the

Royal Canadian Mint. The silver coin features a bison and sells for $20 on the mint’s website. It is the first coin

in a new four coin series. Comeau, who is one of Canada’s top realists in graphite and coloured pencil, can be usually seen working away in his studio, Timberwolf Gallery on Front

St. in Downtown Trenton. One of Canada’s largest coloured pencil

drawings, donated by Doug, hangs in Quinte West City Hall in Trenton.

The National Air Force Museum of Canada saw 46,000 visitors in 2013.

One of the interesting artifacts in the museum is a restored Halifax

Bomber that flew several supply drop operations but met with disaster in 1945 when it was force to ditch in

Lake Mjosa, Norway. It was recovered from the lake and restored. After a 10 year project, it was unveiled in 2005. Halifax Bomber NA337 remains the

only restored Halifax bomber in North America. The only other rebuilt Halifax

in the world can be found in England, at the Yorkshire Air Museum.

We have dinosaurs in Quinte West! Although there have been no original fossils found yet, a business called Research Casting International takes original fossil material and creates castings, moldings and mountings of various species, including dinosaurs, for

museums all over the world. Although you can’t currently tour this facility (it’s a site for Doors Open 2014 on page 27), you can see examples of their work all over the world.

Check out Walter, the life size Tyrannosaurus Rex, that you can uncover at the Dino Dig in Batawa (page 25) that was created by RCI.
