HQU MEETING
1st Thursdays 7:00pm @ Alvey Elementary School: 5300 Waverly Farm Dr, Hay-market, VA 20169
SNOW POLICY: We follow the Prince William County School System Closures
President’s Message Happy Fall! And it is finally starting to feel like Fall. This type of weather makes me want to quilt even more than I normally do. And fortunately there are lots of quilting related things going on – inside the chapter and beyond. So try and make some time to attend a workshop, Big Bee or Saturday Bee or just get together with some friends and quilt.
I hope everyone loved the October speaker – Jane Frenke was won-derful and her quilts were so inspiring! The people who attended her workshop were raving about it. It will be great to see the fabrics they made using Jane’s dyeing processes. If you attended, be sure and bring your fabrics.
An interesting things happened to me at the October meeting. I was talking with a visitor from another chapter who was attending our meeting for the first time. We spoke prior to the meeting and again afterwards. She was so impressed by all the activities we had going on and how everyone was up and visiting and partici-pating. She loved Jane’s presentation and our amazing Sew and Tell. It was interesting for me to look at our meeting through the eyes of someone new to our group. We are an amazing group! We have so many nice, talented, helpful and fun members. And there is something for everyone. Sometimes it is easy to miss all that when we come all the time.
Thanks to each of you for all that you bring to our group – your en-thusiasm, interest, talent, questions, help and YOU. Together we are a wonderful chapter and group of quilters! I hope everyone is getting some quilting done and enjoying whatever they are working on!

“Presence/Absence” by Linda Colsh
Linda Colsh builds her pieced, layered and stitched artworks from the images and ideas that she collects as photographs, drawings and writings. She is known for her images of elderly women and men. Anonymous and invisible to most others, her subjects come from the streets where she finds them. She strips away their context, and re-works them with new narratives and imagined scenarios. Each work begins with blank white or black cloth, which Linda alters with dye, discharge and paint. She works with design software to develop her images for printing by digital or traditional methods. Her process is weighted to designing and preparing content and cloth before the ac-tual stitching together.
Go to Linda’s website, www.lindacolsh.com to read her interesting artist’s statement.
If you have questions contact Beverly Fine, [email protected] or Bonnie Anderson, [email protected]
English Paper Piecing (EPP) Five Ways by Cheryl See
This workshop is full, but there is no wait list. If you are interested
in the workshop, get on the wait list by contacting Mary Anne
Sykes — [email protected] There is a good chance that we will
need to get registrations from the wait list.
Many of us have done EPP before! But Cheryl See, often referred
to as the “Hexpert,” will show us five different techniques and
variations to make those hexagons and sew them together! For
details, see the attached flyer. If you have questions contact Bev-
erly Fine, [email protected] or

Information about CAMP HIGHROAD for newbies to help you make the decision
of which Spring Retreat to choose.
Camp Highroad is a church camp and it is truly a camp in the woods, so there may
be bugs around. Either ignore them or kill and dispose of them. Oak Lodge is a
large log building with a newer cement block section added on for the bedrooms.
Think dorm room, not hotel.
All the bedrooms have twin size beds, many are bunks. We only count the lower
ones. Upper are used for storage. Many of the mattresses were new last year.
They are covered with plastic which can be very chilly at night coming thru a
sheet. Please plan to bring more than 1 layer to sleep on and also more than 1
layer to keep you cozy. Sleeping bags work well, if you have one. (I have an old
suitcase packed with my flannel patchwork sheets, a mattress pad and a twin size
memory foam pad, just for this retreat.)
There are 2 bathroom areas, as we also utilize the men’s. There are shower stalls
with a dressing area at the stall. You need to bring your own showering supplies,
including towels. Or lots of baby wipes. LOL
The main work room is in the large lodge room. There is a fireplace at one end of
it and there are many windows with a bucolic view. These windows also make the
room warm during the sunny daylight and cool after dark. The lighting in this
room is not the best unless the sun is out. So you will want to consider bringing a
work lamp with you for your space.
Machine quilters will be sharing an 8 ft. long table. I strongly urge you to bring a
small (approx. 20” x 30”) folding table to increase your work space. The long ta-
bles will be in groups of 4 facing each other, so you only have access from 1 side.
The chairs are classic straight backed chairs (not folding) and a cushion for your
bottom or back is helpful.
Hand Quilters, there are a few cushier chairs, rocking chairs, loveseat and sofa
near the fireplace for you and socializing. A small folding table (36” L max) will be
helpful to you also for your accessories. Some of the hand quilters also bring a
foot stool.
There is a beverage station at the kitchen end of the main room. Water, lemon-
ade, coffee, tea, cocoa, and a microwave are available 24/7. There is also a refrig-
erator in the foyer hall for any personal items you’d like to bring to supplement
the provided buffet meals.

What Your Serger Can Do For You by Pam Smith
Would you like to know what your serger can do for you? Yes, it can sew a seam, cut
off the excess seam allowance, and finish the edge...all in one motion! But, that is
certainly not all. The serger is not only for garment construction. It can be used for
making quilts, crafts, and home decorations, embellishments, and more. In this workshop, you will learn how to
do a balanced 4 thread overlock stitch, produce a log cabin table topper and a table runner, as well as learn how to
“un-serge” easily. There will also be demonstrations on: locking seam– start & end, easing/gathering, turning cor-
ners, rolled hems, and handling curves. Samples will be on display to inspire you to new heights of creativity!
There are a few more spots left in the workshop. If you are interested, contact Mary Anne Sykes,
[email protected] ASAP, so Pam can do a pre-workshop check of your machine and have it in good working order
for the workshop.
If you don’t have a serger, but would like to learn the strip piecing technique for a log cabin block, register with
Mary Anne and bring your regular sewing machine.
If you have questions contact Beverly Fine, [email protected] or Bonnie Anderson, [email protected]
Ready to make a dent in the pile of unfinished projects you have? Want to do that AND possibly win some money? Then the UFO Challenge is for YOU! Here is what you need to do . . .
Go through your sewing room, closets, bins and
bags and find ALL the unfinished projects you
have.
Decide which ones you want to try and finish
by June 2018. Be bold and put as many as you
want on your list.
You will need to turn in $1 for each UFO you
submit. You don’t have to submit any and you
don’t have to submit all your UFO’s. If you put
10 UFO’s on your list, you pay $10 (must do this
at the November meeting).
Each completed UFO (by the June meeting) will
give you a chance to win. So if you had 10 on
your list (and paid $10) and then finished 5,
your name would go in the drawing 5 times.
The more you finish from your list, the more chances you get to win! 5

Tip 1 & 2 - Sue Heisler and I were sewing and talking this past
weekend and she gave me 2 great tips using “That Purple Thang”.
When she makes English Paper Pieced Hexies she puts a hole in the
hexagon paper forms prior to using them. When the Hexies are
sewn together she inserts the end of the Purple Thang into the
hole and pops the paper forms out. Additionally, the other end is ¼
of an inch so when you are sewing your binding on you can use this
to make sure to stop ¼ inch prior to the end.
Tip 3 – Before using a pattern you should check online for any corrections to the pattern. In your internet
search window type “Corrections for” and the name of the pattern. The official name of a correction sheet
is the Errata (which is derived from the word error) so don’t worry you won’t get racy pictures back.
Tip 4 – Carolyn Fulmer shared a blog from Craftsy on” 8 Things to Bring to a Quilt Show and 4 Things to
Leave at Home.” You can find the article by typing “Craftsy Packing Quilt Show” in your internet search
window. One of my favorite quotes from the article was “Some quilters even suggest that your travel day
outfit can be one you’d like to donate to a thrift store, so you can have more room in your suitcase to
bring home fabric.”

CHECK OUT PAGE 11 FOR THE MYSTERY QUILT INFORMATION!!
Mystery Quilt
Did you do last year’s Mystery Quilt? It was great- we all loved how it turned out. Well, Doreen Johnson
has designed another mystery quilt for us this year. I can’t wait for it!
If you have never done one (or you have and didn’t love it)- you will LOVE this one! It is a fun project
that works well with a wide range of fabric types- batiks, brights, traditional, reproduction- you name it,
it works….
Beginning August and running through April, there will be a monthly step published in the newsletter.
You don’t know what the quilt will look like until the last month! You can work along each month (the
most fun way to do it), or do it later if you don’t have time each month. At the May and June meetings,
people bring in their finished tops (or quilts if you are really ambitious) and share them with the group.
It is lots of fun to see how the Mystery turns out.
The first step started in September, so check it out in our previous newsletters. Check out page 11 for
this month’s mystery quilt instructions. We are also putting each step as an attachment in the news-
letter email if that is easier for you to print out. If you have any questions, Contact Sue Heisler,

Scrap Happy 2 Mystery Quilt Part 3 Doreen Johnson ©2016
Please note: I’m providing 2 sets of cutting instructions – one for using a Layer Cake and the other for using your stash fabrics.
Please read all of the cutting instructions before cutting into your fabrics.
Layer Cake instructions:
Pull out the 12 half cut layer cake remnants left over from last month (these fabrics are approximately 5” x 10”). From EACH of
these fabrics cut (2) strips 1 and 7/8” x 10. (you won’t need the 1” x 10” remaining strip for this project)
Background Fabric: Cut (12) 1 and 7/8” by 10” strips AND (12) 1 and 7/8” x 6 ½” strips of background fabric. These can all be
from one fabric or from an assortment of background fabrics.
Sewing Instructions: EACH pair of print strips will be paired with (1) 10” background strip and (1) 6 ½” background strip as
shown below. Sew your strip sets together, subcut into a total of (8) 1 and 7/8” x 3 ¼” segments.
Sew these matching segments into sets of (4) 3 ¼” Four Patch blocks. You should have 48 of these blocks in total.
OR…. If you are using fabrics from your stash….
Matching the print fabrics you used last month – You may cut into strips as described above …OR… cut (8) 1 and 7/8” squares
from EACH of the 12 fabrics you used to create your HST blocks. From your Background fabric (or asst background fabrics) - cut a
total of (96) 1 and 7/8” squares. Follow the sewing instructions above to complete (48) 3 ¼” Four Patch blocks.
Set these 48 blocks aside with last month’s HST blocks.
