Dear landlord,

My name is Sharon and on behalf of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) I am writing to thank you for organising a quiz in aid of this wonderful life-saving charity.

Together with my son Ciaran O’Connor, I run a pub called The Bell in Great Bardfield. Like many pubs, we regularly run quiz nights.

In January 2019 we signed up to take part in The Big Pub Quiz to raise funds for EHAAT. We were looking forward to it, as were all our regular teams.

A few weeks later my son Ciaran was in a terrible road traffic collision which left him critically injured.

Thankfully an off duty policeman was first on the scene and called for help. The air ambulance was quickly at the scene and thanks to the amazing work of all the emergency services who were present and the surgeons at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, my beautiful boy survived.

We temporarily closed the pub while we dealt with the initial shock of the accident, but our local community came together and organised a rota of volunteers to help us keep it open.

Although Ciaran was still in hospital, where I was keeping a permanent bedside vigil, we decided to go ahead with the quiz to raise money for EHAAT. After what happened, this worthy cause meant even more to us. As soon as we announced it, we were inundated with support and donations of cash and raffle prizes.

The pub was packed to the rafters. It was an emotional night, with everyone cheering on both Ciaran and EHAAT. Thanks to our wonderful customers, we raised over £1,000 for EHAAT.

As a family we have been humbled by the kindness of the community we live and work in, and we are so thankful to EHAAT for the charity’s passion to save lives. Ciaran is recovering well and is now back studying music. I hope you have fun taking part in The Big Pub Quiz for this amazing charity and are successful in your fundraising.

How to get more quids at your quiz!

Charge an entry to the quiz. You could ask your quizzers to pay as individuals or as a team e.g. £5pp.

Your quiz is a great way to bring people together, have lots of fun and as a community raise vital funds to help us continue our life-saving work.

Here are some of our top tips to boost those quids during your Big Pub Quiz…

Hold a raffle or auction and ask local businesses, breweries, friends and family for prizes.

Charge for food with a percentage from each meal being donated to EHAAT.

Pop our cardboard collecting boxes on the bar, or on each table of quizzers.

Let quizzers know that anyone caught using their mobile phones during the quiz will be charged a ‘fine’ and enforce it if they are spotted.

Include a fun round of “heads or tails” asking players to pay £1 to enter with a prize for the winner.

Ask your quizzers to dress in red and/or yellow, in honour of the Charity’s brand colours. Charge a fine for anyone who doesn’t adhere to the dress code.

Welcome

Firstly, I‘d like to say a big thank you to everyone for joining us tonight for our ‘Big Pub Quiz’ in aid of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. My name is ________________ and I will be your Quizmaster tonight!

By taking part tonight, you’re helping to make a big difference in your community. Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, unlike NHS emergency services, is a charity providing a free life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service for the critically ill and injured of Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. It costs in the region of £2,200 every time the team attends a mission, which equates to £9 million every year to cover all charitable costs. The Charity relies upon the generosity and goodwill of the people and businesses of Essex and Hertfordshire to remain operational and keep saving lives.

The prize for today’s winners will be_______________________________ and for the losing team, ______________________________ (wooden spoons are always a fun consolation prize).

The quiz is made up of the following rounds (remove rounds where appropriate): Food & Drink, Music, History, Sport, Film, Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, General Knowledge, and a picture round. If you don’t yet have a team name, now’s the time to decide. Write the quiz round, along with your team name at the top of each of your answer sheets.

Optional - joker

You will be given the opportunity to play a ‘joker’ on any chosen round. When playing your ‘joker’, each correct answer within your chosen round will be awarded double points. So, before the start of what you think will be your team’s strongest round, make sure to tell me that you would like to play your joker. Please note, you can only use your joker once throughout the quiz and you CANNOT play your joker on the picture round.

04/03/2019Big Pub Quiz at The Grey Duck raises £400 for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance

Teams gathered at The Grey Duck in Earls Colne to take part in a Big Pub Quiz for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. Throughout March, the Air Ambulance is asking pubs across both counties to turn their quiz nights into a charitable event – they provide the questions, so keen quizzers just have to turn up and have fun! The Grey Duck’s Big Pub Quiz took place on Friday 2nd March 2020.

All the money raised by The Grey Duck will help Essex & Herts Air Ambulance to continue their life-saving missions across both counties and beyond, allowing them to bring the hospital to the patient in emergency situations.

John Doe, owner of The Grey Duck said: “We are very proud to have hosted our Big Pub Quiz and raised £400 for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. We had 15 teams take part for this worthy cause, and our winners left with prizes donated from local businesses. We would like to thank everyone who attended for making it such a fun night. Our Big Pub Quiz means that Essex & Herts Air Ambulance can continue to operate and make a potentially life-saving difference in someone’s time of need.”
