Name: Section: Roll No.:Department: CSE (L1/T2) Group/Batch No:Answer any 10 (ten) questions Time: 40 min

1. What is polarization? Draw the experimental set-up for the Malus law of polarization. If the angle between the plane of transmission of the analyzer and that of the polarizer is 300, what fraction of intensity of incident light will be transmitted through the analyzer?

2. Define specific rotation. On what factors do it depends? Is specific rotation a constant quantity for a particular substance?

3. Define Hook’s law of elasticity. What do you mean by the effective mass of a loaded spring? Show graphically how you determine the value of effective mass.

4. In Newton’s rings experiment, why does fringe width of the ring decrease with the increase of number of rings? What are the conditions for bright and dark fringes in this experiment?

5. In determining the pressure co-efficient of gas, what do you understand when the reading of the open limb is above and below the reading of the closed limb? How do you get the pressure of gas inside the close limb at 00C?

6. What is specific heat of a liquid? Write the working formula to find the specific heat of a liquid for cooling method experiment. Which one has higher specific heat between water and kerosene?

7. What are Lissajous figures? What do you understand by the time base, TB, of an oscilloscope? Show graphically how do you determine the time base?

8. What is steady state in determining the conductivity of a bad conductor using Lee’s method? Draw the temperature versus time graph for a typical bad conductor. What information do we get from this graph?

9. What is the distance between object and screen in determining the focal length of a convex lens using displacement method? Explain. Draw the optical diagram for determining the focal length of a concave lens by auxiliary lens method and show the object and image distances.

10. What is photoelectric effect? Show graphically how will you determine the threshold frequency? Does the photo current depend on the frequency of the incident light?

11. What is a thermo-emf? Draw the melting and freezing curves and explain how do you use these curves in determining the melting point of a solid?

12. What is neutral temperature? Draw the circuit diagram to plot calibration curve for a given thermocouple.

13. Define elasticity. Write down the name of different elastic modulii. On what factor the modulus of elasticity depends?

14. Write down the name of different parts of a spectrometer. What is minimum deviation? Write down the working formula in determining the refractive index of the material of a prism with the help of a spectrometer.

15. Draw the circuit diagram for the determination of the resistance of the galvanometer by half deflection method. What is a shunt? Why do you use it?
