NARRATIVE TONE & AUTHOR’S VOICE

DEFINITION:

• Tone: a compound of composition, which encompasses the attitudes toward the subject and toward the audience implied in a literary work.• Essentially, tone is how the author conveys a

specific attitude, via word choice and those connotations associated with the words they used.• This is done using SYNTAX and AUTHOR’S VOICE.

TONES:

• Tone can be informal, formal, condescending, joyful, playful, somber, angry, enraged, etc.

• Any sort of feeling you can think of, there’s a tone and the appropriate words to show it.

• Tone is IMPLICIT.

• A reader must figure out the writer’s tone by themselves.

TONE VS. MOOD:

• Tone IS NOT mood.• Mood is the feeling the author wants readers to

experience WHILE READING the piece.• Mood is achieved THROUGH tone.

HOW CAN WE CHANGE TONE?

I was filling up at a gas station when I noticed a spider right beside the driver's side door. He seemed super lost. He kept wandering in circles and waving his legs frantically in the air. The poor monster seemed like it was limping. He was having a hard time supporting himself enough to climb upwards -- he kept falling and sliding down the window. I looked closer and realized that two of this little guy's legs were missing. The poor demon was lost and badly hurt. My heart kind of went out to him.I debated killing him, or brushing him off of my car, but then I realized that he wasn't hurting anybody. He was just lost. Sure, the way spiders eat may be barbaric, and they look absolutely horrifying, but really -- they're just eating the way they know how, and they look the way they look. Spiders are just like any other creature. So I left this poor little amputee spider alone, and opened my door to find a cup lid or napkin or something to help him get off of my car and back into the wild.He ran at my face.He will be mourned.The moral of the story is everybody else's hypocrisy is inexcusable, but mine is okay.
