How does Shakespeare characterize Macbeth in Act 1 of Macbeth?

In the first act of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth is seen as a character who is easily persuaded to make a choice he knows as wrong.

___________Topic sentence establishes name of text and author, responds directly to the prompt and sets up a focus for the rest of the ideas. It shouldn’t just state plot.

WHAT NOT TO DOCompare to a topic sentence that just states plot:

In the first act of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth is considering what to do when the witches tell him he might one day become king.

How does Shakespeare characterize Macbeth in Act 1 of Macbeth?

In the first act of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth is seen as a character who is easily persuaded to make a choice he knows as wrong. At first he is called “brave” Macbeth and it is clear that King Duncan is willing to reward him for his efforts during the rebellion. But as soon as the witches greet him as he “that shalt be King hereafter” (I.iii.50), he immediately starts to think dark thoughts: “Present fears / Are less than horrible imaginings” (I.iii.137-138). The fact that he’s already thinking murder shows how malleable he is even though he knows it’s wrong. He knows this is wrong, because later he asks the stars to hide his dark thoughts. ________Quote Sandwich #1

Set up the context of any quote before you give the quote so that you orient the reader to the events and prepare them for why this quote will be important.

Carefully use correct parenthetical citation format: end the quote, end quote mark, parenthetical citation, end parenthetical citation, period.

Use pieces of quotes incorporated into your own original sentences as well as pull-out quotes to make the ideas more your own. This provides a chance to get support from the text without having to take long pauses from your own ideas.

But as soon as the witches greet him as a future king, he immediately starts to think dark thoughts: “Present fears / Are less than horrible imaginings” (I.iii.137-138). The fact that he’s already thinking murder shows how malleable he is even though he knows it’s wrong. He knows this is wrong, because later he asks the stars to hide his dark thoughts. He changes his mind by the time he meets up with his wife, but she shames him so thoroughly that he eventually caves to her: “I am settled, and bend up / Each corporal agent to this terrible feat” (I.vii.79-80). If he thought it was okay to murder Duncan that would be one thing, but Macbeth has gotten talked into doing something he knows is wrong.

If he thought it was okay to murder Duncan that would be one thing, but Macbeth has gotten talked into doing something he knows is wrong. Because he is so easily persuaded into murder, he may have to deal with a guilty conscience later, and he may be easily convinced to do other bad things too.

Note the final sentence shows the importance of the point I’ve made about Macbeth in the paragraph: why this idea is significance to the story.

Long quotes (3-5 lines within the paragraph text) should be separated from the text with blank lines on top and bottom and five-space indents to left and right margins and single-spaced. Quotations are not needed unless you are quoting dialogue (as in this case) - the format indicates it is a quote on its own.

Note the colon to introduce a quote in this form, the lack of indent in the line that comes after, and the follow up on the significance of the quote at the end.

Treat the title the same way here as in the essay. Make sure the way you reference the source in the parenthetical citation agrees with the first word(s) of the Works Cited format.
