OPENING FACE-OFF Leading at the Polls: The final national opinion polls of the 2016 calendar year feature four women's Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) programs, tied with ECAC Hockey for the most of any conference. Wisconsin remains No. 1 in the USCHO.com (unanimous) and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine rankings, followed by No. 2 Minnesota, No. 5 Minnesota Duluth and No. 10 North Dakota. A fifth WCHA team, Ohio State, is receiving votes in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine poll. Pairing Up: With just four games across D-I remaining before the holiday break, three WCHA teams are in the top-eight of the national PairWise rankings: No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 4 Minnesota and No. 5 Minnesota Duluth. Every Game, Every Rink: Between a challenging nonconference slate and the gauntlet of arguably the nation's premier conference, WCHA teams are playing D-I's toughest schedules, according to the RPI Strength-of-Schedule ledger. Five of the NCAA's top-10 toughest schedules and eight-of-20 belong to WCHA teams, the highest representation for any single league. Wisconsin has placed D-I's second-toughest schedule, Minnesota Duluth ranks fourth, St. Cloud State is fifth, Ohio State is eighth, Minnesota is 10th, North Dakota is 12th, Bemidji State is 14th and Minnesota State is 17th. Winning Hockey: Despite these tough schedules, half of WCHA membership (four teams) are at .500 or better and 75 percent (six-of-eight) are at least .400, both just behind Hockey East (55.6 percent, five-of-nine; and, 77.8 percent, seven-of-nine) for tops nationally. Wisconsin ranks second nationally with an .875 winning percentage (17-2-1). Minnesota is fifth at .800 (15-3-2), Minnesota Duluth is tied for eighth at .725 (13-4-3), North Dakota is 15th at .575 (9-6-5), Ohio State is tied for 18th at .450 (8-10-2) and Bemidji State is tied for 19th at .425 (8-11-1). Nonconference Success: The WCHA continues to have the nation's best nonconference winning percentage at .766 (26-6-3). WCHA teams are 12-3-2 (.765) against College Hockey America opponents, 8-0-0 (1.000) against ECAC Hockey and 3-3-1 (.500) against Hockey East. U.S. - Canada December Series: Thirty-three (33) current, former or incoming WCHA players are participating in national team camps this week with either USA Hockey or Hockey Canada (full list available on page two of this release). The countries will play a two-game series Dec. 17 (Plymouth, Mich.) and Dec. 19 (Sarnia, Ontario). Horns Up: With five wins overall and three in WCHA play, Minnesota State has already surpassed its victory total from the entire 2015-16 season (3-29-4), has almost matched its total from the previous two seasons combined (6-61-5) and has its most league triumphs since the 2013-14 campaign (7-20-1). Under second-year head coach John Harrington, the Mavericks have won three of their last five WCHA games and are 3-3-1 in their last seven contests overall. With a 2-1 victory over then-No. 3 Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 10, Minnesota State posted its first win over a ranked opponent since March 1, 2014 (a 3-0 triumph over No. 2 Wisconsin in game two of a WCHA Quarterfinal series). It was also the Mavericks' first win over a ranked opponent on home ice since a 4-2 win over No. 7 Mercyhurst on Sept. 27, 2013. Pannek Sets the Pace: Minnesota junior Kelly Pannek enters the holiday break on a 16-game point streak in which she has at least one assist in each contest and 35 points total (9g-26a). Pannek leads the NCAA in: assists (31) and assists-per-game (1.55); points (40) and points-per-game (2.00); and, power-play assists (10) and power-play points (14). She is also second with a +25 rating. We Are WCHA: Once again, the top-four teams in NCAA D-I women's hockey for average and total attendance are WCHA schools. Wisconsin leads the country with an average of 2,194 fans per game at LaBahn Arena; Minnesota is second by welcoming 1,563 each night to Ridder Arena; Minnesota Duluth ranks third by hosting 1,041 per contest at AMSOIL Arena; and, North Dakota is fourth with an average of 902 per game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. BY THE NUMBERS 1: In addition to being at the top of both national polls, Wisconsin also ranks first in the NCAA for scoring offense (3.90 goals per game) and scoring defense (1.00 goals allowed per game). 5: Categories in which Wisconsin senior goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens ranks either first or second nationally: goals-against average (1st - 0.75), winning percentage (1st - .906, 14-1-1), shutouts (1st - 8), save percentage (2nd - .957) and wins (2nd - 14). 11: St. Cloud State skaters that have already either equaled or surpassed their previous career-high goal, assist and/or point totals. 14: Straight games in which Ohio State has not allowed a power-play goal (beginning Oct. 21), the NCAA's longest active streak. The Buckeyes now rank second in the WCHA and fifth nationally with a 91.5 penalty-kill efficiency (54-for-59). 44: Points by North Dakota's freshman class (21g-23a), tops in the WCHA and tied for third nationally. 51: Wins for third-year Bemidji State head coach Jim Scanlan (51-39-5, .563), who topped the 50-win plateau last weekend. THE WEEK AHEAD Pair of Nonconference Series: Just two WCHA teams are in action this weekend, with both on the road for nonconference matchups. No. 10 North Dakota skates against CHA opponent Lindenwood, while Minnesota State plays at ECAC Hockey foe Union. Happy Holidays: Following this weekend, the WCHA is off for the holiday break. Play resumes with nonconference and exhibition games the weekend of Jan. 6-8, 2017, while the second half of the league schedule begins with a full slate the weekend of Jan. 13-14. No. 1 Wisconsin 7, at Ohio State 0No. 1 Wisconsin 5, at Ohio State 0(Dec. 9 and 10 at OSU Ice Rink; Madison, Wis.) Top-ranked Wisconsin ended the first half in style, earning a pair of shutout wins to a sweep a road series at Ohio State. After registering their highest scoring output of the season Dec. 4, the visiting Badgers continued right where they left off by tallying seven goals in a series-opening victory. Jenny Ryan and Annie Pankowski each scored two goals apiece, while Emily Clark enjoyed a career-high five-point game (1g-4a). UW goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens finished with 14 saves in the shutout. The series finale saw more of the same, as the Badgers snapped a scoreless tie with a four-goal, second-period outburst en route to a 5-0 victory. Alexis Mauermann got the scoring started for UW, while Pankowski, Baylee Wellhausen and Presley Norby all netted goals in the second period. Mikayla Johnson added a third-period strike, while Desbiens turned aside all 11 shots she faced for a second-straight shutout and NCAA-leading eighth on the year.

No. 3 Minnesota Duluth 3, at Minnesota State 0at Minnesota State 2, No. 3 Minnesota Duluth 1(Dec. 9 and 10 at Verizon Wireless Center; Mankato, Minn.) Minnesota Duluth opened a road series with a 3-0 win Friday, but host Minnesota State came back to upset the third-ranked Bulldogs with a 2-1 triumph Saturday. The visiting Bulldogs kept the puck on their offensive end for most of the game in Friday's series opener, out-shooting the Mavericks 36-14 en route to a 3-0 win. Brianna Quade made 33 saves for Minnesota State, but Ashleigh Brykaliuk, Sidney Morin and Brooklyn Schugel all scored for UMD. Maddie Rooney turned in a 14-save shutout for the Bulldogs. Saturday was a momentous day for the host Mavericks, with the team picking up the program's first win over a ranked opponent since March 1, 2014. With her team trailing 1-0 entering the third period, sophomore defenseman Megan Hinze scored a pair of power-play goals to lift Minnesota State to the 2-1 victory. Hinze's tying goal came 3:47 into the final period, while the tie-breaking, game-winner was scored at the 14:48 mark. Quade made 39 saves for the Mavericks, including 16 stops in the third period alone.

at No. 10 North Dakota 3, St. Cloud State 2at No. 10 North Dakota 4, St. Cloud State 0(Dec. 10 and 11 at Ralph Engelstad Arena; Grand Forks, N.D.) No. 10 North Dakota created some separation in the WCHA standings, holding visiting St. Cloud State to two goals en route to a sweep. Saturday, the host Fighting Hawks used a pair of second period goals to snap a 1-1 tie and propel them to a 3-2 victory. Freshman Alyssa MacMillian scored her first collegiate goal just 36 seconds into the game to put UND up early. But the Huskies would respond near the midway point of the period off the stick of Alyssa Erickson to tie the game up heading into the break. Amy Menke and Sarah Lecavalier scored in the middle frame, which proved to be the difference. Julia Tylke scored a third-period goal for SCSU, but UND held on behind goaltender Lexie Shaw (13 saves). North Dakota got goals from three different skaters, including a two-goal effort from Kayla Gardner, for a 4-0 win in Sunday's series finale. Ryleigh Houston opened up the scoring 32 seconds into the game, fellow freshman Hallie Theodosopoulos added a second-period goal and Gardner scored twice in the third. Shaw made 11 stops for her fifth shutout of the season.

Bemidji State 3, at RIT 1Bemidji State 5, at RIT 1(Dec. 9 and 10 at Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena; Rochester, N.Y.) Bemidji State ended the first half on a winning note, sweeping a nonconference road series at RIT. After the home team took a 1-0 lead early in Friday's series opener, Bemidji State scored the game's final three goals for a 3-1 victory. Emily Bergland knotted things up at the 14:47 mark of the first period, before the Beavers struck twice in the second stanza. Melissa Hunt and Emma Terres both scored in the middle frame, and Brittni Mowat shut the door with 27 saves to preserve the win. It was another all-around effort, sparked by underclassmen, that earned the Beavers the sweep with a 5-1 win in Saturday's series finale. Freshman Haley Mack opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal, fellow rookie Abby Halluska had a career-best three-point effort (1g-2a), sophomore Lisa Laiti had three assists, freshman Jacqueline Kassa netted the game-winner and Bergland (a sophomore) also scored. Mowat turned aside 23-of-24 shots for the win.

No. 2 Minnesota 5, at Boston University 1at Boston University 6, No. 2 Minnesota 5 - OT(Dec. 9 and 10 at Walter Brown Arena; Boston, Mass.) No. 2 Minnesota scored 10 goals on the weekend to come away with a split in a nonconference series at Boston University. The Gophers opened the series with an impressive offensive output, scoring five goals and taking 50 shots during a 5-1 victory. Megan Wolfe opened up the scoring just 1:48 in, which started what would become a three-goal first period thanks to Kate Schipper and Sarah Potomak. Cara Piazza and Lee Stecklein added goals later in the contest, while Sidney Peters made 14 saves in the win. Saturday's contest was a wild, back-and-forth affair that saw Minnesota erase a two-goal deficit in the final five minutes, only to have BU win, 6-5, with a goal 1:40 into overtime. After the host Terriers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Potomak and Schipper scored within 28 seconds of each other to tie things up midway through the first period. BU scored three more times in the second to give them a 5-3 lead heading to intermission. It looked like things would stay that way deep into the third, until Kelly Pannek (at 14:52) and Stecklein (at 18:22) flashed some late-game heroics to send the game to overtime.

Defending league regular season and back-to-back playoff champion Wisconsin is the preseason pick of conference coaches to finish atop the women’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) standings in 2016-17. The Badgers edged out defending national champion Minnesota in the poll of the eight WCHA head coaches.

Wisconsin ended Minnesota’s three-year reign atop the WCHA standings last season with the fifth regular season crown in program history, and league coaches believe Mark Johnson’s team will repeat in 2016-17. The Badgers, who advanced to the Frozen Four last year and won 35 games – the fourth-most in school annals – collected six first-place votes and 48 points overall.

Minnesota is coming off a campaign which saw the Golden Gophers win their fourth national championship in five seasons, the seventh in school history and the 16th in 17 seasons for the WCHA. The Gophers placed second in the coaches’ poll with 44 points and two first-place votes.

A pair of 2016 Final Face-Off participants, North Dakota (36 points) and Minnesota Duluth (30) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Bemidji State, which set a program record with 22 wins last year, was selected to finish in fifth place with 27 points. St. Cloud State (16 points), coming off its best campaign since 2009-10, was tabbed for sixth. Ohio State and Minnesota State rounded out the poll.

Wisconsin senior goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens, who broke NCAA single-season records in 2015-16 for shutouts (21), save percentage (.960) and goals-against average (0.76), was the coaches’ preseason choice for WCHA Player of the Year. Her Badgers teammate, junior forward Annie Pankowski, along with senior forwards Dani Cameranesi (Minnesota) and Minnesota Duluth (Ashleigh Brykaliuk), also received votes.

Three players received two votes apiece and tied as the choice for preseason WCHA Rookie of the Year: Minnesota forward Lindsay Agnew, along with Wisconsin forwards Presley Norby and Abby Roque. Ohio State defenseman Jincy Dunne and North Dakota forward Ryleigh Houston each received a vote.

• North Dakota finishes the 2016 calendar year with a nonconference series against Lindenwood this weekend, Dec. 16-17. Both games in Wentzville, Mo., will begin at 2 p.m. (CT).

• This weekend’s games will be just the sixth and seventh meetings between the two teams in program history. UND has won all five meetings against the Lions, and the last time the two teams met was Oct. 4-5, 2013 in Grand Forks. Only the senior class has any experience against Lindenwood, as Kayla Gardner, Gracen Hirschy, Halli Krzyzaniak, Lisa Marvin, Amy Menke, Marissa Salo and Lexie Shaw were all freshmen the last time UND played the Lions.

• The Fighting Hawks picked up their third sweep of the season with two wins against St. Cloud State on Dec. 10-11. UND edged the Huskies in the first game, 3-2, before cruising to a 4-0 victory in the finale. Six different skaters scored goals for UND over the weekend, including four freshmen. UND also set a program record in the Dec. 11 game, as the Fighting Hawks kept the Huskies without a shot on goal during the first period.

• Freshman Alyssa MacMillan scored her first collegiate goal during the first shift of the game on Saturday, scoring at the 36 second mark. SCSU responded later to tie the game at 1-1 before the end of the first period, but a strong start to the second period led to UND taking a 3-1 lead in the period’s first three minutes. Menke ended a five-game pointless drought, scoring her fifth of the season, followed by Sarah Lecavalier’s third of the season less than a minute later. The Huskies scored a second goal in the third period, but UND weathered the late rally for the 3-2 win.

• It was all North Dakota in the weekend finale, as the Fighting Hawks kept the Huskies to a season-low 11 shots on goal, including zero in the first period. Just like in the first game of the weekend, UND scored on the first shift of the game, this time coming off the stick of Ryleigh Houston at the 32 second mark. Fellow freshman Hallie Theodosopoulos scored her third of the season in the second period to give UND a 2-0 lead. Senior Kayla Gardner then added two goals in the third period, including one on an empty net, to secure the 4-0 win for UND. Shaw made 11 saves in the contest to pick up her fifth shutout of the season.

• Shaw currently ranks second among WCHA goaltenders with a 1.40 goals-against average and fourth with a .937 save percentage. She has also played a major role in UND’s penalty kill which ranks fourth in the nation with a .922 efficiency.

• Shaw is tied for third nationally with three shutouts this season. • The Fighting Hawks rank seventh nationally among senior scoring, as the

UND senior class has totaled 54 points so far this season.• North Dakota’s freshman class ranks first in the WCHA, and third in the

nation, with 44 points on the season, stemming from 21 goals and 23 assists. All eight freshman skaters have already recorded a point, and the class is led by Houston who has 13 points from four goals and nine assists, ranking fourth among freshmen in the WCHA.

• Emma Nuutinen leads all WCHA freshmen with seven goals, while Houston leads the WCHA freshmen with three game-winning goals.

• Five of UND’s seven defensemen have scored goals this season, with both Hirschy and Jordan Hampton leading the group with three goals each, while Krzyzaniak leads in overall points with 11. Additionally, the UND defensemen have totaled 28 assists, and have generated one third of UND’s scoring.

• Menke sits in seventh place in UND history with 97 career points. She is just three points shy of becoming the seventh 100-point scorer in program history.

• UND is undefeated (9-0-3) when scoring the first goal of the game.

• Ohio State is receiving votes in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine Top 10 for the second-straight week.

• Ohio State defenseman Jincy Dunne has been invited to USA Hockey’s Women’s Winter Training Camp that is taking place this week. Dunne is one of seven WCHA players that received an invitation and, notably, she is the third-youngest player participating in the camp.

• Ohio State’s next matchup will be Jan. 6-7 against non-conference foe Penn State. OSU holds a 5-1 record all-time against the Nittany Lions.

• Through the first half of the season, Maddy Field has been the highest scorer for the Buckeyes, totaling 12 points and three of the team's four power play goals.

• Last Saturday, freshman Kaylee Remington earned her first career start in a tilt against Wisconsin. She has now appeared in three games in her career, all of which came against Top 3 opponents.

• Three Buckeyes sit in the Top 6 in the WCHA in blocked shots: Jincy Dunne, Dani Sadek, and Jessica Dunne.

• Among freshman defensemen, Jincy Dunne has been one of the most productive in the country. Her nine points are Top 5 and her 45 blocked shots are tops in that category.

• With this long penalty kill streak Ohio State is on (no power play goals allowed since Oct. 15) it now sits fifth in the country with a penalty kill percentage of .915.

• The St. Cloud State women's hockey team (5-14-1, 4-11-1-1 WCHA) heads into a three-week break after being swept, 3-2 and 4-0, this past week at No. 10 North Dakota. The sweep was the second straight suffered by the Huskies in WCHA play and extended their season long winless skid to six games.

• Sophomore forward Julia Tylke and junior forward Alyssa Erickson each scored for SCSU in the series opener at UND as a third period rally came up just short of tying the game after the Fighting Hawks opened up a 3-1 lead.

• Tylke led SCSU, offensively, in Grand Forks with two points (1+1), which extended her team leads to nine goals and 14 points. She is also now tied for the team lead with five assists. Tylke's nine goals are tied for seventh in the WCHA.

• Freshman forward Kayla Friesen heads in to the break among the top-10 rookie scorers in the WCHA with four goals and seven points this season. Her point total is tied for ninth and her four goals are tied for fourth among league freshmen. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native is second and third among SCSU point-getters and goal-scorers, respectively

• Freshman goaltender Janine Alder has made 14 straight starts for the Huskies. The Zurich, Switzerland native ranks second among all NCAA rookies with a 2.47 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. She has two shutouts on the season and is the first net minder in SCSU history to boast multiple shutouts in her freshman season.

• Senior defenseman Caroline Markstrom is in the midst of a career year in her final season. The Kovland, Sweden native has two goals, one assist and three points, all of which are single season career highs. Her two markers lead all team blue liners.

• In the first half of the season, 11 different Huskies have already either equaled or surpassed their previous career high goal, assist or point totals.

• St. Cloud State returns from break on Jan. 6-7, 2017, at home against Colgate University. Game time is 7:07 p.m. on Friday, January 6 and 3:07 p.m. on Saturday, January 7 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

• Wisconsin heads into its month-long holiday break as the top-ranked team in both the USCHO.Com Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. The Badgers will be off from competition until a non-conference series at Lindenwood on Jan. 6-7.

• Wisconsin is coming off of an impressive sweep at Ohio State, blanking OSU 7-0 on Friday before earning a 5-0 triumph on Saturday. Eight different Badgers scored , led by Annie Pankowski, who tallied three goals, and Baylee Wellhausen and Jenny Ryan, who each recorded two tallies.

• Emily Clark was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week after recording an NCAA-high seven points last week. The junior scored a goal while tallying four assists in UW’s 7-0 win on Friday before collecting a pair of helpers on Saturday.

• Wisconsin leads the country in home attendance, averaging 2,194 fans per game. UW has enjoyed four sellouts this year and has had a crowd of over 2,000 fans at seven of its eight home games this year.

• Current Wisconsin women’s hockey players Pankowski and Ryan, along with former Badgers Brianna Decker, Meghan Duggan, Hilary Knight and Alex Rigsby earned invites for the 2016 USA Hockey Women’s Winter Training Camp that is going on right now. It features 37 players, including 14 Olympians and 27 world champions.

• Six Badgers were selected to various Hockey Canada national teams last month. Clark, senior Ann-Renée Desbiens, former Badgers Meaghan Mikkelson and Blayre Turnbull, and incoming freshman Sophie Shirley were selected to the 22-player roster that will compete for the Canadian National Women’s Senior Team against the United States in a two-game series in December. In addition, Clark and senior Sarah Nurse were selected to compete for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team at the 2017 Nations Cup in Germany and Austria, Jan. 4-7.

• Nurse leads Wisconsin with 15 goals and 25 points this season. Nurse became the 22nd member of the century point club at UW in the Badgers’ series against Bemidji State earlier this month. Nurse now has 66 career goals for Wisconsin, which ranks 10th in school history. Nurse needs one goal to move into a tie for ninth in school history with Kendra Antony.

• Desbiens leads NCAA in goals-against average with a 0.75 clip while her eight shutouts also pace the NCAA. The La Malbaie, Quebec, native also sports a .906 winning percentage, which leads the NCAA and a .957 save percentage that ranks second. Last year Desbiens broke the NCAA single-season records in shutouts (21), goals-against average (0.72) and save percentage (.960).

• Pankowski moved into 16th place in school history in career points as the Laguna Hills, California, native now has 119 points. The U.S. national team player has 10 goals in her last seven games, including a hat trick in UW’s 4-1 win over UMD on Nov. 19.

• Thanks to the Badgers’ 4-1 win on Oct. 15 against then-No. 7 Clarkson, head coach Mark Johnson became the first coach in league history to earn 400 career victories. Johnson holds a 412-77-36 record for UW and is only the third coach in NCAA Division 1 women’s hockey history to hit the 400-win milestone.

• The Badgers have one of the most balanced offenses in the NCAA, as 17 different Badgers have combined to score 78 goals this year. Ten Badgers have 10 or more points this season, while nine Badgers have four or more goals. UW leads the NCAA in scoring offense, averaging 3.90 goals per game.

• Wisconsin also has the NCAA’s best scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 1.00 goals per game. Only once this season has UW given up more than two goals in a game.
