FR ALO WRITES… “Learning from the Good Shepherd” (Mark 6:30-34) A few years ago, as a member of our MSC Provincial Administration (in Indonesia), there were serious discussions on how we could engage with “difficult members” of our MSC Province. The Superiors of the different districts were refusing to accept into their region confreres who were thought of as being “difficult” to work or live with. This issue began to consume a lot of the Provincial Administration’s energy and time. The complexity of having to address the personal issues of these particular confreres, seemed to keep us from dealing with the other needs of the Province. During one council meeting, I suggested that we seek the advice of other (“older”) MSC Provinces who would have had more experience in dealing with these matters. The council agreed. It was not long after, that a former Provincial from another MSC Province came to our assistance. We gathered all the MSC District Superiors for a two day reflection. It turned out to be a very fruitful gathering. In one of his talks this former MSC Provincial said: “Regardless their attitudes and behavior, who they are and where they come from, or their backgrounds, we have one certainty, they are our brothers. We have to be compassionate to them and look after them. The more we reject them, the more they will feel alienated and marginalized. Therefore I suggest that we identify these members and help integrate them within every district (community). We are all responsible for taking care of them, not just the Provincial and his council”. The initial attitude of certain MSC District Superiors was no doubt contrary to the way Jesus would have dealt/engaged with (similar) people during his time. Today’s Gospel gives us an insight into Jesus as a person who was compassionate in dealing/relating with people who had lost their way or were distressed; people who were like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus shows us the purpose of his incarnation, of his presence amongst us. Jesus came with love and mercy to seek out the lost sheep (Luke 15:3-7). Similarly, in the story of the multiplication of loaves and fishes, Jesus was not trying to show his majesty but rather he was moved with compassion for the welfare of the crowd that had gathered around him. And even though his disciples objected to his way, he was persistent in stating that they had to give or do something themselves, to help feed the people (Matt 14:16). Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd. He tells his disciples that the good shepherd is one who is willing to lay down his life for his sheep (Matt 18:12). To be truly disciples of Jesus, we must continually endeavor to follow in the footsteps of our master: to be compassionate to others, to look out for the marginalised, and to bring about a unity that helps build God’s kingdom, to fulfill Jesus’ prayer that we may be one (John 17:21). With Jesus as our model, there is no rejection, marginalisation, hatred, separation and alienation. Within our own community, I have been moved and am impressed with some of our parishioners who carry a strong desire to build up our parish community. These parishioners take it upon themselves to welcome new parishioners and visitors to our parish community, or to keep in contact with parishioners who for various reasons do not come to, or are unable to attend, weekend masses. This is a very simple yet powerful act of reaching out to others, of welcoming and compassion. As parish priest, I personally appreciate what these parishioners are doing and I invite many more to be part of this movement. This is not primarily about bringing people back to mass, it is about welcoming people and building a community with an atmosphere of acceptance, unity and love. Let us continually learn from the love of Jesus our Good Shepherd in his way of thinking, feeling, relating, and of being.

FR ALO WRITES… “Learning from the Good Shepherd”

(Mark 6:30-34) A few years ago, as a member of our MSC Provincial Administration (in Indonesia), there were serious discussions on how we could engage with “difficult members” of our MSC Province. The Superiors of the different districts were refusing to accept into their region confreres who were thought of as being “difficult” to work or live with.
