Just for Nutters ?

w

Canopy Formations are only done by suicidal, kamikaze, ravin’ mad nutters. They spend the skydive trying to collapse, damage and trash their canopies. At any excuse, out come their knives and they hack away at other people’s kit before gaining the much needed extra freefall time by cutting away and flying their reserves. These guys are just thrill- seekers deliberately courting danger....... Right?

Vong. C anopy fo rm a tio n jum pers are som e o f the sa fe st and m o s t

responsible skyd ivers o u t there. They are excellent canopy p ilo ts , super aw are o f

w h a t is go ing on around them . I f yo u w a n t to k n o w h o w to f l y a canopy, ask a CF jum per.

Serious CF jum pers have ded ica ted eq u ipm en t w hich they only use for sub term inal

d ep loym en t because of the w ay it is packed. For instance the slider is only m ade o u t of

m esh , ra th e r th an the s ta n d a rd sail slider used by o ther skydivers, an d they d o n 't pack the

canopy in to a bag or stow the lines in bungees. A ll th is ad d s to the speed of open ing an d thus

the m ore tim e they have u n d e r canopy. The rigs are packed alm ost identically to how a

BASE ju m p er packs, en su ring fast an d on head ing openings every tim e. In

com petition this is very im p o rtan t as every second counts try ing to b u ild th a t first point.

If one team m em ber has an off-heading opening , this can resu lt in a canopy collision

or cost the team a m edal place.

CF ju m p ers have a very h igh s tan d ard of p ilo ting skills. They can p u t the ir canopy

anyw here in the sky th a t they choose. They u n d e rs ta n d h o w to contro l it. H ow to use the fron t risers, b rakes an d back risers. O r

ju st tw ist the canopy by u sing a com bination of risers. They can even m ake the canopy

m ove left a little by jabbing on the righ t toggle! If you w an t to learn any k ind of

canopy control skills then ask a CF jum per.

C om peting in CF is split

do w n in to three

d isciplines in this country . 4

w ay ro tations, 4-w ay

sequential and8-w ay speed.

The ro ta tio n s even t is tim ed over one an d a half m inu tes, s ta rting w h en the first com petito r exits the aircraft. The ju m p ers th en stack the ir canopies an d take it in tu rn s com e off the top of the stack an d th en rejo in on the bottom . The w o rld record is 20 ro ta tions in time! The cu rren t British record is 15 set by Cross Keys Crew last year.

The sequentia l even t is sim ilar to fo rm ation skyd iv ing b u t w ith the obvious exception tha t th is is done u n d e r canopy.R andom an d blockform ations are d ra w n from the pool an d team s then h av e to m ake these d iffe ren t shapes tak ing feet g rip s on o ther m em b er 'scanopies o r lines. C u rren tly Team X h o ld s the British record of 5 p o in ts in w ork ing tim e (tw o a n d a half m inutes).

The 8 -w a y speed even t is tim ed w ith ju m p ers ex iting the aircraft, a im ing to b u ild a fo rm ation in the qu ickest tim e. The fo rm ation changes each ro u n d w ith som e being easier to b u ild th a n others.

W hat a g rea t feeling CF is. For those of you ab o u t to g ive it y o u r first go, y o u 'll get bu tte rflies in y o u r stom ach chu rn in g in an tic ipation of do in g som eth ing th a t is conceived by o ther skyd ivers as being dangerous. But d o n 't w h u ffo 's th ink all skyd iv ing is dangerous? I t 's all a m a tte r of perspective. CF is actua lly q u ite safe, it w ill teach you so m u ch ab o u t flying y o u r canopy an d you w ill certain ly get a buzz!

W hy no t get a few of you toge ther an d travel to the CF N ationals a t W ild G eese in N o rth ern Ire land? The in te rm ed ia te even ts are sp eed 4w ay (dem o team s sh o u ld be good a t this) an d4-w ay ro ta tions (one ro ta tion each). To qualify as 'in te rm e d ia te ' tw o m em bers of the team m u st have less than 250 CF jum ps, the o ther tw o can h av e u n lim ited ju m p num bers. The cu rren t British C ham pions Team X w ill be g iv ing free coaching an d cou ld be a lternates in the in te rm ed ia te events.

G e tt in g S ta r te d

First of all you need a brief from an instructor or qualified CF jum per. If you are not sure who to approach, your CCI will point you in the right direction.W ith this done and the safety side out of the way, sort yourself out with som e gear. Any old container and reserve will do, and a 7-cell main such as a Fury or, even better, a Triathlon or Lightning.

It is im portant to work out the canopy wing loading for you and the coach. Ideally the two wing loadings should be the sam e if jum ping the sam e type of canopies.W ear weight if necessary to help this out. A large, docile canopy is probably better to start w ith than a faster ‘swoop m achine'. Ensure you your knife is suitably positioned and you can get at it quickly.

Exit the aircraft at about 8,000ft, do a stable exit and about a three second delay; any shorter and your canopy will be deploying in the turbulence created by the aircraft. Now check your canopy, take control of it and, with a little bit of brake on, find your coach and fo llow the rest of the skydive as they have briefed you.

Learn the different inputs that front and back risers make and how your brake toggles really work. Practice docking and clim bing down the lines of som e e lse ’s canopy. Kick out and jab your brakes. You are now rotating over the top. Grasp your front risers and drop down. Now ease some back riser input and let your coach get the ir legs in your lines. A bit of brake to help them com e down.

Remain altitude aware. Still a bit of tim e left? Depending on your brief, you can always try a downplane, land the stack that you are in or fly in side by side.

1 c o u n c ilBPA

We congratulate the BPA's National Administrator Sharon Norris on the birth of her first child, Matthew William.

T he G ibbs T rophy This trophy was presented to the BPA by ex-Chairman Phil Gibbs to be awarded annually to the ‘most improved display team of the year1. He has now issued the criteria for the award, which include smartness, punctuality, PR and commentary . A full copy is available from the BPA office.

M embership Q uestionnaire

The questionnaire included in the last Mag with the renewal details has had a massive response. More than twice the number of people have given us their views than voted in the last election (and that was a record count). There is still time to send your views in, if you have lost the form, call the BPA office for another.

STCAll AFF instructors must now wear audible altimeters when doing AFF. STC is considering changes to the grading sticker system. A subcommittee is being set up to investigate the area of “talking down’ students on the radio, chaired by Steve Apps. A working party is being set up to investigate canopy types and appropriate experience levels.

COMPETITIONSThe rules for 1999 Nationals have been finalised. There are no major changes in any discipline other than the Classics, who are to trial a Match Play system as requested by I PC. The British Team will be selected on results after eight rounds, not at the end of the Match Play knockout.

S election C riteria - Unfunding

There is no funding for CF and Classics for the World Meet in 2000 (due to loss of Sports Council grants for ‘Performance and Excellence’) so there was no need to set performance criteria for funding. But the committee still set minimum performance criteria to be achieved before teams or individuals can compete at the World Meet - even at their own expense! These were set at exactly the same standards that CF and Classics had to achieve to obtain funding in 1997/8. Competitions Committee Chairman John Smyth commented “Harsh really... but it was felt we must be

seen to be trying to raise standards to have any hope of regaining Sports Council grants.”

‘99 W orld M eet D elegation The committee was successful in applying to Council for £30,000 towards travel, insurance and entry fees for the British delegation to the World Meet ‘99. This amount was, in fact, previously allocated in ‘98 from BPA funds as it was then anticipated it would be needed in addition to Sports Council grants due to the cost of sending a large delegation to Australia. Council chose John Hitchen to be Head Of Delegation for this World Meet.

Y ear 2000 Nationals

As we went to press the final decision had not been made regarding the proposed combined Nationals for the year 2000. Updates can be found on the BPA web page.

T rainee J udges

A training package with financial incentives for trainee judges is on the way. Contact Bob or Kate Charters through the BPA Office if you are interested.

DEVELOPMENTCameraman Finn Molloy has been awarded life membership of the BPA for his gold medal at the FS World Cup in Portugal, 1998.

CF & Classic NationalsWild Geese

The prices in the last issue for the Nationals at Wild Geese stated £6 per jump but this is only for accuracy. Higher altitude jump prices are £10.

In addition, a levy of a £5 entry fee per person plus £1 per jump has been added to go to the British Team Fund. As we went to press, Competitions Committee were finalising jump prices etc, for the latest details check out the web page: www.bpa.org.uk

Brit stays UP longerAdrian Nicholas, the famed Free Flyer, buddy o f Patrick and general Dude, has broken a world record that has been around fo r years. The world's longest freefa ll was initially set by Joe Kittinger; 4mins 30 secs, when he free fe ll from a ballon at around 120,000ft, over a desert in the USA in the 60's. Well Adrian as you probably know has lots of winged suit jumps. His mentor Patrick De Gayardon had passed on lots of his knowledge. Patrick met an untimely death last year, and in tribu te to him, Adrian set out to gain a world record fo r his friend. He would use his winged suit to try to fall fo r longer than Joe, get Guinness to ra tify it and dedicate it to Patrick. Adrian recorded a free fall of 4 mins 55 seconds, a new world record. Well Done Adrian! Keeping the British End Up fo r longer!! (or should tha t be Anglo-French?)

Spruce Em UpTony Spruce headed o f f to Empuria fo r Christmas sun (Tony is a real Cark jumper with a black reserve... blue skies, black reserve...) A fte r a clear spot & good jump a sea mist blew in, 'spookily' as they deployed canopies, covering the bZ. No sweat fo r our ‘Tone. .. , he worked out relative positions from the sun & sea and carefully flew through the cloud. The cloud went on and ominously on. Under 500 ft, he emerged from the white s tu ff, too fa r from the DZ! He pin-pointed a safe landing area in down town Empuria. Some skilled canopy handling, with full-on fron t riser was needed. Being not used to this type of immense speed he was bleeding it o ff, when, to his horror, he noticed a horse tro tting across his runway. Tone was at mid-flare and it was too late to take avoidance action so Tony adopted the crash position and prepared fo r impact. BAM! I t went dark. Horse, parachute, skydiver everywhere.

Lying on the ground the Cark Boy started checking tha t all still

worked. Just poorly winded he dragged himself to his feet. 10 yards away lay the horse... legs in the air, apparently 'deed1, (sic)Tony considered the situation:Damn good skydive, Bummer about the sea mist. Rockin' landing, met the Grim Reaper riding a horse & took him out! Result! Soon reality dawned. Dead Horse, Gringo, Pesetas, Lynch Mob...time fo r a Sharp Exit.

Quickly checking around him, no one had seen the deadly deed. He made o f f as fas t as a winded man could. Swearing to himself to keep 'stum', lest any horse gang find him. As he cleared the fence to safety, he saw the horse getting up. Phew. Tony drank all night on tha t one.

Boogie KnightsThe Black Knights parachute centre hosted a BritlOO weekend in May. What a weekend! The BK's only have a piston Islander, but they have skydivers who are enthusiastic, motivated and appreciative! George, Ian Chick and Steve Houlker were organising. George was again doing Back Tracking dives. The skydivers on these dives are just a little bemused as to the purpose o f these dives but, once on them, realise the fun to be had. The landing area is full of happy smiling jumpers, and the debrief is full of laughter. Aim No 1 of BRICK) is fu lfilled - TO HAVE FUN. Graham Bergman came on all 4 dives, and was all over George on every jump. Excellent job 'Bergy'! Boy did they turn it on in the evening fo r BritlOO. 'Strewth', a kicking local 6 piece band with 2 of the clubs skydivers in, set up and played fo r 75 appreciative jumpers fo r a fa ir few hours o f rocking 'middle o f the road tunes'. Beer was provided by Stella Artois and Whitbread Breweries, sorted fo r BR100 by Geoff the CCI. (Congrats on your 2500th skydive Geoff), (with Geo. back tracking) shame about the tr ip into the pond huh?!) The party went on till the wee small hours, and fortunately the weather was dire in the morning.

Simon Ward travelled up to Cockerham on Saturday afternoon to deliver the BR100 presentation and drum up the sponsorship vibe. Great commitment from him fo r the 6+ hours on the road to deliver his talk. Thanks Simon, no one else can do what you do dude! More power to you. Sunday morning, Geo and Simon delivered a couple of litt le seminars, attended by everyone on the DZ, even 1 jump students. George covered the arts and pitfalls of Swooping and Hook Turns. BritlOO do not encourage pilots to Hook or Swoop the ir canopies (The theory being tha t we know you're gonna do it, so here is how to do it with the risks minimised.) This talk was particularly pertinent to BK's as one o f the ir jumpers Bob, made an error a week ago, and turned too low. He is in intensive care in a bad way. Get well soon Bob. W ere sorry we were a week late with the talk. Simon chatted about the media minefield and how to go about it successfully. The BK's then handed over the £176 they had raised fo r BR100 the night before. WICKED is not a big enough word! Black Knights, BR100 salutes you. A fine DZ, Great people and attitudes, and LIVE music while I packed on Saturday afternoon from Dave and Neil. And they told me it was ‘Grim up N o rf. Not in my experience!

Speed FreaksTarget Skysports are hosting the f irs t UK “Vertical Speed Racing" competition 12-13 June. This is to find the fastest Man and Woman, over one Vertical Mile, in the UK. The Mile starts at 11,280 f t and ends at 6,000ft. I t will be run from the centre's G92 with an exit height of 13,500ft. The event will be judged by Cool & Groovy's Timeout! Evolution 2000 which will store the entry and exit times of your mile run. There is a rumour tha t the TV may be on hand to record this 'Wacky Race'. Already the DZ is being called with regard to this event, so get down there, it'll be a big party!

BritlOO is on track with all cylinders firing. A t the time of writing we have completed five BritlOO weekends; Scotland, Netheravon, Target Skysports, Black Knights, Headcorn and finally over the water to Wild Geese. Pictures and details on the website. The great thing about the weekends has been the support of jumpers at all levels.

Aircraft - Langar has organised a seven ship fleet comprising a Casa, two Skyvans, three Let 410's and the Turbine G92 which is being provided FREE by Steve Swallow and Target Skysports - nice one! Other DZ's have been more than helpful w ith aircraft and facilities.

We will have a well practised base 40 with some extra help from H inton Skydiving and Pete Marsden who are providing some free flying time at Hinton. Thanks guys!

Steve Mursell and George Pilkington run a seminar at Netheravon

Sponsorship - Now up to about £35,000 in support, half in cash and the rest is through donations of goods and services. Against this we have massive infrastructure costs of aircraft positioning, fuel and additional facilities. We have major support from Precision Aerodynamics, Cool & Groovy, Coldseal Conservatories, Sunpath and the BPA. We also have the support of every major UK dealer and manufacturer. Individuals have poured tim e and effort into helping. We will publish details of all helpers at the end of the record. Ahead of that, thanks to recent donors such as Craig Hill and Impact Signs for the stickers, Steve Houlker's Flusafe and Paul Applegate's Apples Rigging Services for the first Personal Sponsorships (PSP's). From now on the emphasis is firmly on all participants to get sponsorship money to add to the BritlOO pot.

W ebsite - Kevin Richardson continues to work wonders with the site. You can w in a new Precision canopy, an Evolution and other fantastic prizes. Full details on how to pitch sponsorship, all our articles and stories and Dave McKelvie has edited some fine bits of video. It is the intention to update this site as the record happens and have video within 60 minutes of each attempt. Keep surfing the site; it is updated all the time with new information.

Raffle and Competitions - great prizes for both skydivers and non-skydivers, total value well

skydive 13*+ June 99

over £10,000. Hot Tip - we have had very few competition entries on the web so enter NOW!

M edia - The BritlOO DZ tour has attracted great PR. In Scotland we had TV and newspaper coverage with promises of more to come. We achieved BBC radio news at Target and more radio and press at Cockerham.Skydiving gains from this publicity and so do the clubs, it's all positive!

We have also agreed with Microsoft Networks (MSN) to be a Web Event during the week of the attempts - 12-16 July. They will post information about the record and we will have a live online chat at 8pm on Wednesday 14 July, be there!

Rumour (out of) Control - Just for the record...BritlOO w eekends are non-profit m aking; organisers claim little or no expenses; no-one is paid; we charge the DZ nothing but slots (any registration fees or increased jum p prices are the decision of the DZ); all the funds raised go back to BritlOO ; the camera team are not making profits.

Joshua Jake Eardleywas born on Monday 22 March weighing 61b 4oz.

PARAGONGeorge McGuinness, Ned Blyth, Freddy McDonald and Steve Tawse, all Paragon instructors, have formed a CRW team. Called The Freddy Crewgers, they are training hard and can be seen practising every weekend. Why not come along and have a go as fresh meat is always needed in the team.

Spring into Skydive SibsonWe had a few good parties before the jumping season really got going kicking off with a "Long Time No See” to Sparky (a video filmed in the summer of ‘85 proved highly amusing 14 years on), and one to say cheerio to Tim Tennant, who has gone back to the USA.

Welcome to Brad Rock from Arizona, here doing tandems through the summer, the Let crew: Slavik, Serge and Ivan, and to Skydive International, who are offering AFF and Skydive U courses.Bernie Parker has joined the full time staff. There is now more room for both indoor and outdoor packing in the form of the millennium shed and grassy knoll.

There has been a big shake up at Nethers with all the agencies moving on to DZ's new, enough to say the composition of the DZ is now changed but, as someone once said, "rumours of my death are somewhat premature." Netheravon is still alive and kicking and the stat's for the May bank holiday are 120 lifts and 1,500 jumps in three days, with plenty of jumpers averaging 6/7 jumps per day.

We have started ‘early bird' lifts at reduced costs and John Horne is also running the 'Millennium raffle'. The prize will be free jumps for the whole year! No catches, as long as APA aircraft are flying you are jumping for free, got to be worth a try at £5 per ticket.

We had a progression trip to Gap, the Scottish Parachute Open Collegiate Kompetition (SPOCK) at Strathallan, and BCPA Northern Regionals. Watch out for our Nationals at Target Skysports on28 June-2 July.

G a p E a s te r P r o g r e s s io nMore than 30 collegiates travelled to Gap, averaging about 20 jumps over ten days. Student progression was spectacular. Of 15 static line to 10 sec delay students, eight achieved Cat 8. Neil Moffat gained his Cat 10 during the first week and his cast during the second! The trip was a great success and everyone had a good holiday. Best wishes to Emma Cox, Caroline, Neil Moffat and we hope to see you all jumping again soon.

Lots at LangarThe Easter 8-way competition generated mostly local interest, six teams enterined and the National team, Junctions, turned up too. Plenty of fun was had, although performance didn't quite match enthusiasm and Junction9 won easily! Junction9 spent lots of time coaching, regenerating interest in both 4 and 8-way- we suddenly have several budding serious teams!

The greatest hazard in

life is to risk nothing;

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool, To place your ideas and dreams before others is to risk their loss, To live is to risk dying. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard is to risk nothing, The person who risks nothing, has nothing, knows nothing and is nothing. Chained by their certitudes they are slaves, they have forfeited their freedom.Only a person who risks is truly free.

Some jumpers over 50 believe their medical is OK. Check it, if your medical form is the old type, ie showing an expiry date of one year and you have been self certifying, you have an invalid medical. You must have a new medical on the new form. If in doubt check with your CCI or the BPA.

CyprusChampionships

A small but friendly meet with all events being highly contested right up until the last jump, with the Army Air Corps team taking most of the honours. Locally, the Hellenic 4-way FS team won the senior event with George Panagopoulous (from South Africa) as member/coach has made an enormous difference.

The Yorkies won the intermediate FS with Mark Tether and Danny Kilbey saying farewell to return to their regimental display team. Good luck for the future.

These small local events are an important platform for young up and coming competitors to have a go and enjoy the experience without too much pressure. Our year 2000 Championships will be 1521 October.

WILD GEESEFriday 2 April saw the Cessna Caravan make its inaugural flight. This heralded two excellent days before the Easter weather deteriorated, permitting only intermittent jumping for the Green Team who did a total of 18 FS jumps during the week and benefited enormously from the expert coaching of Julia Foxwell. Julia's professionalism and enthusiasm made a tremendous impact and she and colleague, Andy Godwin enjoyed themselves so much they extended their stay - in Andy's case this almost became permanent as I gather he is now on the homeless register.

Paul Naismith, Rab McDonald and lain Anderson (Golden Lions display team) gave CF tuition and seminars and introduced seven novices to CF.

MAY BOOGIEWe held our 16th anniversary boogie, with a fun accuracy competition in which the Northern Ireland POPs challenged the other three competing sections.

Jumping began on Friday; hotted up on Saturday when the competition really got under way. A distinct air of lethargy hung over the D.Z. on Sunday - not so much to do with the intermittent cloud cover as the effects of the BBQ/alcohol consumption of the previous night. Brilliant sunshine on Monday restored everyone's spirits. Get to the Wild Geese for the National Championships in Classics and Canopy Formation from 14-21 August. This is a first for us and we are hopeful of a good attendance and can assure all visitors of a typically Irish welcome. Free pick-up is from any Northern Irish port.

Bmrl 00 WeekendHeld on 7-8 May, it was a great success. Considering we're a very small (but friendly) DZ we had 29 participants and achieved nine organised loads. Many thanks to Simon Ward, George Pilkington, Ian Chick and Steve Houlker. There were scheduled seminars and skydives and we raised £176 towards the Bnt 100 fund ind had a superb party - plenty of good food, beer and great rock/blues band Strewth (courtesy of local jumpers Dave Gaskell and Danny Fitzgibbon).

Quadra V-Tec

Note: Kit News is an editorial feature, not paid tor in any way by advertising. We aim to provide facts about new kit so that you, the reader; may make an informed choice.

Inclusion of a product here in no way constitutes a recommendation,

Cypres Boldly Go!The first Cypres AAD’s, produced in 1991, are coming due in 1999 for their second 4 year service. The German manufacturers, Airtec, tell us that when they originally designed the Cypres they anticipated ageing of electrical components over time. From the start they expected at least a 10 year life span for the unit.So far all Cypres units which have completed the 4 year maintenance program have confirmed these predictions. As far as Airtec can ascertain to date, each unit will also maintain its excellent performance through its 8 year maintenance period. As the units get into a new area of ageing after the 8-year maintenance, Airtec have stated that they wish to go forward in the safest way possible, with the same high standards that jumpers have come to expect from them. With this in mind a 10 year service maybe the next requirement. However, the test results from the 8 year maintenance will be studied and, if it can be established that Cypres will perform well past the 10 year mark, then the 10 year service will be changed to 12 years. This decision will be made prior to the time when any units are due for a potential 10 year maintenance.Airtec has produced a sheet about the Cypres4 yearly maintenance which contains some frequently asked questions.

Tandem Vector LanyardsThe BPA’s Safety and Training subcommittee (STC) have decided to make mandatory a Relative Workshop’s mod to their Tandem Vector system’s RSL lanyard. The upgrade involves a change to the new style RSL which includes a stainless steel shackle, crystal ball and solid forged pin (the old type had a wire welded pin). Relative Workshop’s recommendation was that the upgrade is carried out after the rig had completed 600 jumps, but the BPA’s STC insisted on conversion by 10 May this year.

That inscrutable German innovator Steran Ertler, has come up with yet another interesting idea to join, amongst other inventions, his domed, one-pin Pop-Top as used by TSE on their Teardrop.Working with Paratec, a small German company whose products include the Fandango main canopy and Next tandem system, Stefan has developed a new concept in main canopy ownership. Called the Quadra V-tec, this 9-cell hybrid design incorporates a zero-P top skinandF111 4oottom skin and ribs, as pioneered by PdF in their Merit design and since adopted by PD with their Silhouette. However, the clever part comes with the potential to change the Quadra V-tec’s performance according to the owner's experience level or preference. When a first time buyer purchases their V-tec they are, in effect, also buying the second canopy of their career. Due to a specially designed line set, the original canopy behaves like a down-tuned beginner parachute, which is easy to control and flare, has flattish turns and cannot be stalled. Latei on, when they would normally want to change to a higher performance canopy, the beginner line set may be exchanged for an advanced line set at a cost of around £125. Stefan tells us that the advanced set will improve performance noticeably, providing more v-v-vroom and surf potential. When it comes time to move on to pastures elliptical the owner may find the canopy easier to re-sell by changing back to the beginner trim. Clever, eh?

i

Blue Suede RigsSuede rigs? You’re having a bobble hat and scraf ain’t ya? A suede lookalike fabric is available now from Paratec on their Next container system. Called Alcantarathis, a new, hi-tech, synthetic fabric which is used for luxury Audi car interiors, it is very durable and stain resistant. Colours are grey, black or light tan (what a surprise!).

Lines from Outer SpaceAs we went to press Paratec were testing some exciting new stuff possibly to be used as suspension line. Initially developed by NASA and known as Zylon, this new material is now available to the civil market. Zylon has a much higher melting point, less tendency to stretch and almost twice the tensile strength of Spectra (microline). How suitable this material is for skydiving will be seen after Paratec have finished their test program. Vorsprung Durch Technik!

Icarus Extreme VXIn April’s Kit News, we described Precision Aerodynamic’s spirited attack on PD’s domination of the main canopy market. Now the Tennessee company’s Euro fighter of turf surfing performance is being released to spearhead this assault and provide a direct threat to PD’s recently released Velocity (Kit News, Feb ‘99). For the past four years Precision and NZ Aerosport (who designed the canopy) have been producing the Extreme FX, a 7-cell platform with three small triangular cells created by the crossbraced ribs. They have been steadily building up a bigger share at the top end of the radical turf surf market. The canopy has been a success and has lured some Stiletto jumpers away Trom PD, hence the timely release of PD’s new Velocity.

E xtrem e VXNow Precision will turn up the heat yet again in June with the release of the Extreme VX, a souped-up version of an already quick machine. The VX is based on a 9-cell line set and, with the tri-cell cross-bracing, therefore effectively produces a 27-cell canopy. Extra rigidity has been achieved through both narrower cell spans and broader angles in the cross-braces. According to Precision, this cuts the shape distortion down to 8.75% (compared to 11.5% on the FX and 20% on conventional 9-cells). This rigidity produces an aerofoil which looks more like a rigid aircraft wing than a flying mattress, resulting in a ‘crisper feel’, say Precision. Apparently the performance sacrifice made through extra line groups is well exceeded by gains made through a harder, cleaner wing. The downside of all this is a greater pack volume and a lighter wallet!

The Extreme VX packs up around 5% bulkier than the FX (the 7-cell line set model) and around 25% greater than a conventionally constructed 9cell but this is overcome by the use of smaller wing sizing. Precision claim the new canopy begs

to be loaded 5% more heavily than the FX - which itself performs best when heavily loaded relative to conventional ram-airs. Precision say that the VX is the ‘ultimate weapon of choice’ for the turf-surf purist and NOT for everyone. It is being released with several qualifying parameters aimed at ensuring the VX is only flown by experienced, capable canopy pilots.

G u a ra n te e o f S a t i s f a c t io nPrecision Aerodynamics are now offering two unusual guarantees. The first is an unconditional one month guarantee on all of their sport canopies. Any new canopy purchaser may (for any reason) return an Icarus or other Precision canopy to the dealer within one month of purchase;Precision will accept the return and credit the dealer. This applies even if you don’t like the colour - nice!

The second guarantee applies to the company’s student and tandem canopies. Should a DZ have an Icarus Tandem or Student ZP7 canopy off the road (for any reason, eg, damage or theft) and, providing they have purchased an Icarus Tandem or Student ZP7 within the last 18 months, Precision will FedEx the DZ a replacement canopy to use at no cost for up to one month while the situation is resolved. The only cost will be the FedEx charge.

Old Style AAD's Grounded“ Remove all Mk2100 units from service. Store units pending instructions to return to SSE for modification and re-certification” starts a recent service bulletin from SSE inc of New Jersey, USA. The bulletin goes on to state that a recent study has shown that, in a worst possible case scenario, there may not be enough power in the Mk2100 batteries to operate the unit. The company did make the point that the 20 year old design has chalked up several real life saves, and there are no reported incidents of the device failing to activate a pin-puller when triggered. After further studies SSE will announce whether modifications are feasible, and any such mods will be completed asap.

rules of V$: survival 'Vgl

will « always '1

stay the '' same ”

C O N T R O L

A step by step guide from Dave Morris to flying and landing your canopy. The basic guidelines are useful both for the novice and the more experienced skydiver.

The 'rule of thumb’ for canopy control which has been taught for years revolves around these basic concepts:

1. Clear all hazards by 1,800ft

2. Start your downwind leg at 1,500ft

3. Start your crosswind leg at 1,000ft

4. Turn onto final approach at 500ft

These rules have been passed down from the original plan for an accuracy jumper who would cruise around on a big docile canopy. Today even RAPS and AFF students are using parachutes with more performance than those canopies and, although similar, the rules have changed somewhat.

S afety F irstThe basic rules of survival will always stay the sam e and don 't change m uch for the different experience levels.

prior to emplaning1. M ake a m ental note of the w ind direction relative to the sun (this w ay you will have an idea of the correct landing direction even if you land w here there is no other w ay of telling which w ay the w ind is blowing).

2. Take a good look at w hat the other canopies are doing on previous lifts. If you are not confident, avoid the first lift.

3. Do not get into the aircraft w ithout a p lan . M ake a m ental note of the surrounding landm arks to help in m aking the right decisions.

4. Know the drop zone by getting a brief on the local hazards w ith the aid of an aerial photograph.

5. Make sure you know of any drop zone rules relating to landing patterns.

6. Do not get yourself on a big-way w hen you are no t sure of the other skydiver's experience levels.

in the aircraft1. O n the climb to altitude, make a note of any turbulence so that you are prepared during your descent.

2. W hen you m entally dirt-dive your skydive, include your p lan under canopy to re-establish your descent pattern.

under canopy1. As soon as you have completed your post deploym ent checks, (canopy, airspace, take control, find landing area) check that you are where you expected to be.

2. Stay one step ahead of your plan and stick to it, keeping your eyes open for the other skydivers and no t zoom ing around erratically.

3. If th ings go w rong alw ays rem em ber to fly sm oothly for the last few hundred feet. You can make a crosswind or even dow nw ind landing on the fastest of canopies and survive w ith a good flare.

The PlanIf the w inds are as predicted and you are open in the area you expected the plan is quite simple.

Pick a ho ld ing p o in t halfw ay betw een the landing area and the opening point. W hen you are sorted under canopy head for this point im m ediately and stay overhead until 1,000ft. W hen you are at 1,000ft tu rn w ith the w ind and tow ards the target flying to one side or the other of that target. Fly just past the target and tu rn into w ind, the base tu rn being smooth, flat and controlled.

In slightly m ore detail, imagine there is a m assive funnel w ith its point on the landing area. The farther you are from the target the m ore space you have to play with.

Roughly divide your altitude into 500ft sections and reference those altitudes w ith points on the ground which get nearer to the landing area. Watch your altim eter and as you reach each lower altitude try to be overhead the points on the ground.

Between the altitudes of 1,000ft and 500ft you shou ld be com ing dow nw ind tow ards the land ing area, not directly overhead bu t to one side or the other depending on the landing pattern in use. W hilst d ow nw ind an d for the last few seconds of land ing , th ings can happen quite quickly so stay sharp. Look at the w indsock as well as your speed across the ground.

I f the windsock is fu ll an d your ground speed is fast, do not fly past your target and expect to drive back tow ards it (into a strong wind). Turn into w ind as close to overhead the target as possible.

I f the windsock is limp an d your ground speed is low you can fly past the target before turning into the final approach. Then you should get some penetration into w ind and will be able to glide into the landing area.

W hem T h in g s S o W iro n g

bStd spotA lthough extremely unusual they have been known! To quote John Meacock, "A bad spot is the first in a series of errors that can lead to a fatality". It is no t a big problem if you correct immediately. But to recognise a bad spot you first have to have some idea of the correct opening point. If you jum ped into the aircraft w ithout a care, you cannot expect to m ake the best of the spot you are given.

W hen you are open, im m ediately find the landing area, m ost of us do this w ithout having to think about it. Locating the landing area and the expected opening point w ill give you an idea of w hich way you should be heading. In other w ords, w herever you are open, if it is not w here you expected to be, find w here you expected to be and aim for that point.

s h io H s p o tThe nam e gives the best clue because a short spot has shortened your options and all you really can do is 'damage limitation'. If you open short, (ie, not far enough upw ind of the target), the priority is to get into w ind and establish the likely landing point. If that point is safe and hazard free and is on the drop zone, the best course of action is keep into w ind and make the best of it. You could use front risers to increase both penetration and descent rate. H ow ever this is not be recom m ended below 500ft or in tubulent conditions as it is possible to collapse the canopy.

lomg spotLong spots (too far upw ind of the target) are probably caused by fast aircraft and slow exits. W hatever the reason, the deep spot is one of the most dangerous to skydivers. Finding the landing area and im m ediately heading for it is obviously the best option, bu t do not be deceived into holding full glide thinking you are 'giving it some'! Full glide w ill give you the h ighest airspeed but it also gives you the greatest rate of descent. The best w ay to return from a deep spot is w ith just enough brake to check your descent rate w ithou t com prom ising forw ard speed, between quarter and half brakes.

The danger for us is that last few hundred feet (as always). There have been num erous occasions w hen even the m ost experienced skydiver gets sucked into target fixation. "Must make it back to the DZ... M ust make it... Oh no, must get into wind... Whoops!” We all have seen this before from the ground and, if you are like me, it sends shivers dow n your spine. Everyone can see the m istake happening in front of their eyes, except the pilot of the parachute.

Do not press on to try and make the DZ when an early turn will get you into a safe area with plenty of time. If you do leave it too late then land crosswind or even

Self portra it by Keith Larrett

Page 35: r e g u l a r s - British Skydiving€¦ · skydive 3 June 99. o n y o u r o w n b u t n o t a lo n e AIRTEC Mittelstrasse 69 D-33181 Wunnenberg Tel. +49 2953 9899 0 Fax +49 2953

downwind and flare, you will be fine (a bit green maybe but fine!).

o f f th e w in d lineIf you end up open completely off the w ind line, the first part of your descent should be dedicated to trying to get back into an upw ind position. The best w ay of accomplishing this is to use your canopy's drive to cut across the w ind direction i.e. 90 degrees to the w ind line. Anything other than this will not give you the best penetration across the wind. There are some slight variations to this depending on the depth of the spot. For example if you are off the w ind line and short the best flight configuration is m ore into w ind than crosswind whereas off the w ind line and deep should get you on quarter brakes and heading halfway between the wind line and the DZ.

C ano py C o ntro l M yths• Full glide is not the best way to cover the m ost ground w hen going dow nw ind. Just a little brake checks the descent rate w ithout losing m uch forw ard speed.

• A 360° tu rn is not the best w ay to lose altitude if you are short, because for the 359° that you are not into w ind, the canopy is being pushed back. Instead, directly correct the spot by putting yourself over the right place at 1,000ft.

• The am ount of ground covered during your track is not enough to make any difference to your chances under canopy. It’s a lame excuse for bad canopy control.

For the Experienced P ilotMost of the information here can be translated into helpful guidelines for the experienced pilot. However the speeds we have become used to, w ith the high perform ance designs we have today, m ust be addressed. If you find you are m aking silly little mistakes on a regular basis and you are always more than 10 metres from where you planned, you are not reading the information available w ithin the conditions of the day and you do not know your canopy well enough.

It is doubly im portant to stay 'ahead of the gam e' w hen you progress onto som ething w ith a little m ore zing especially if you are starting to get interested in sw oop landings. They look great as we all know. But swoop landings also kill. There are ways of getting an accurate swoop

landing w ith awesome speed whilst minimising the risk.

the infamous 'hook turn'There is definitely a difference between the 'Hook Turn' and a 'Swoop Landing' both being 90 to 180° turns or more. The hook is accomplished w ith the use of the toggles and a swoop w ith a front riser.

W hen w e started treating the square parachute radically the hook or toggle turn was the w ay everyone w as doing it. This m ethod has some major drawbacks. The m ain problem w ith the toggle tu rn is that it is total commitment. You choose your m om ent and then you bury the toggle. This dives the canopy at the ground leaving you w here you are, the speed then coming from the pendulum effect of your body swinging back under the canopy.

This is all very well until you get it wrong! The m argin for error is extremely small w ith a toggle turn. To be 20 metres above the ground w ith the canopy below you and to realise then that you are too low is a heart stopping m om ent (sometimes literally). To bail out of the turn the only thing you can do is flare prem aturely hoping to flatten the dive in time for touchdown. We know you guys are still out there doing this, so WAKE UP because you will hu rt yourselves!

swoop landingsA swoop landing is started from a m uch higher altitude and involves steady input from one of the front risers. With your hands still in the toggles reach up to the riser and pull gently until a turn is started. W hen the turn is complete, let up on the riser and start the flare. The main difference w ith this m ethod is that it will give you every opportunity to bail out if you realise that you are running out of altitude, just release the riser and flare.

Do not attempt this type of landing until you have at least a thousand skydives AND good awareness in piloting your canopy!

T o S um mariseTreat your sport w ith a little more seriousness, it's possible to be radical but remain w ithin safety param eters that will get you dow n in one piece.

Go back to the section about having a plan because that is the m ost im portan t p a rt of knowing w hat to do to be accurate and safe.

We are fed up of saying it but here it is one more time, "Don't try to run before you can walk". The guys (and it is mostly guys) looking like skygods w hen they land, usually are! There is no substitu te for thousands and thousands of jumps. If you w ant to make it that far, then start at the beginning.

Olav Zipser, father of freefly, with over 13,000 freefly jumps shares his experiences...

When was your first jump and what was it like?1986, an AFF jum p and I pulled the w rong handle... Whoops! So I found myself under a round reserve! I had no clue w hat had happened. I landed on a round reserve, very d isappointed, as they had told me I w ould jum p a m odern square parachute. I had to buy a case of beer! I started skydiving because I couldn 't find a hang-gliding place, I found a DZ instead.

You used to be a flat flyer, what did you get up to?W hen I had 150 jum ps I w as invited by the 4-way and 8-way G erm an national team. My best results in 4-way and 8-way were silver at the Germ an Nationals in both.

What inspired you to fly ‘unconventionally’?I first started to fly in an unconventional m anner during the AFF m aking Loopidoos! (somersaults - Ed) I learned scuba diving w hen I w as eight and I loved to w atch dolphins p laying around each other. Flying in the air like dolphins, together around each other in the air at different speeds and directions. . . ooh la la! ... I thought this w ould be WONDERFUL!

Was there any moment when it all fell into place? The first feeling of being in full control of w here I w anted to fly to is probably the m ost nicest feeling I discovered. But before that happened for real I im agined it in m y m ind for a long time.

The Clowns are perhaps the most widely known freeflyers. Who are they and what was it all about?I called myself a freefly clown because I w as clowning around w ith my flying performances, having fun around conventional flying. By now we have five Freefly Clowns, I have taught them all and shared m y love for hum an body flight, we have all pu t years of time into it. We com peted everywhere we could and w orked all our skills as best as we could together and divided again so that we would spread the Freefly Knowledge around quicker.

I always liked more to follow m y ow n imagination. A nd then share the information by teaming up, rather then team up straight away and experiment difficult things as a team. It w as hard in the beginning to find a team, at the time I d idn 't find anyone w ho w ould trust m y im agination for five years. The first person I found w ho w ould understand and have m y same flying philosophy w as Mike Vail, Freefly Clown #2, together we became Freestyle World Cham pions in '93. Then Omar, Clown #3. He hired me to teach him to become a World Champion. With him I could show to the skydiving com munity w hat a cam eraflyer's potentials are. No-one before ever flew around someone and showed such different angles and perspectives. I met Charles Bryan, Freefly C lown #4 in '94. He was a natural and a great spirit. Then comes Stefania, a g irl!... together we could do things that I could have never done w ith a guy in the air

space.... just imagine the 'Beaver Eater' and you getthe idea! (I am reliably informed this is a freefly formation - Ed)

Do you have any fears about the way freefly is spreading around the globe?I like to see how fast people share their know ledge on how to freefly. I just hope that everyone has as m uch safety in their flying as m uch as I try to keep myself in every jum p.

Tell me about your Emmy AwardThe Emmy Award I won in '95 as best Electronic Cam eraperson. I w as cam eraflying for Gau Martinengo. Gau w as the first Skysurf female World Cham pion in '94. We took fourth place at the 1st X Games Event, she w as the only female to make the finals.

Tell me about your event, the Space GamesFor a long long time I've com peted at every single event twice (as perform er andcameraflyer).I always imagine different rules, different games, better com petitions. I conceived the Space Games as the ultim ate com petition. The aerial pure m an on m an race. Before you open your parachute you know if you w on or lost. Lots of adrenaline. I also included other Games such as the fabulous Speed Race. I like the com petitors to be their ow n judge, this is m y perfect com petition. In the Games, for tw o of the one-on-one races (AD Challenge, Freefly Indy Car) we do n 't need any real judges besides the com petitors themselves and the video. For the Fastest Hum an, there's no discussing, 'Evolution 2000' is the judge w ith precise data ready in the computer. For the tracking race, who opens furthest aw ay (not lower than 3000ft AGL) is the w inner of the round.

We will have more games to add as soon as we have more licenced 'A tm osphere Dolphins'. We are very fortunate to have a signed two year contract w ith A1 Internet for $100,000 per year for prize money, organisation and production costs of the Space Games. We will organise up to four events a year.

Are webbed gloves good for freeflying?Wings and palm gloves are like starting in the 100m sw im m ing Olympic race w ith scuba-diving fins on!

When did you first encounter the ‘Space Ball’?

I used to jum p w ith oranges and from the very first orange jum p I realised that anything you

release in the open space, requires extrem e safety precautions! I p u t m ost of m y effort to follow

safety precautions before I tried to fly w ith anything else in the air and I experim ented w ith a lot of things including pool balls, melons, a w ater

heater and convertible cars! The space ball version seems to be the most reliable toy for the sky if you

have the right flying ability. In our 1st

School of M odern Skyflying, we

d o n 't allow anyone to

jum p w ith a spaceball

unless a Spaceball M aster is present. I

do not

recom m end anyone to try this at

home!

What is your most

memorable skydive?

My jum p num ber seven, first jum p alone w ithout an instructor above a

complete cloud ceiling at 3,000 feet; flipping and spinning around enjoying the freedom of Space hopping above the clouds, flying m y parachute tow ards a rainbow, not knowing where I was, not caring at all. Loved it!

What has been your ‘closest call’ in life?Hitting a car in the air.

How would you like to be remembered?I d on 't have an exact answ er for that question, but you m ay find it in the w ords of Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, my favourite author: (see quote).

Olav was talking to George Pilkington

“ We are given the choice, every day to learn and move forward or to repeat what we already know and remain stagnant, flat or still.

“ With learning comes the fear of the unknown but, at the same time, the satisfaction of discovery. All people can feel th is satisfaction but because of the fear involved, most choose to remain in the safety of the still world...

“ The majority of people have the idea o f learning or LIFE, backwards, they hold on things we have already discovered or learned, never asking if there is more. The few of us who choose to live are the ones that are often looked down on, or called strange, but in reality are the ones that advance the masses by raising the bar of knowledge and discovery. This o f course is part of the test...

“ We are lucky enough to have opened our eyes to the g ift o f sight and our responsibility is to share th is vision with those who are w illing to see and teach those with closed eyes that they can be opened. For in our wide field of vision we see that we are not great people high on mountain, but children who have just begun to walk. We open our eyes in stages and the hardest step is the first stage... o f accepting that we can do anything we wish as long as we put our m inds into i t ... ”

T he tailgate slowly opens, it’s the third attempt at the magic 300. Although your whole body is tingling with adrenaline, there is a calmness about the moment and everyone is ready. You can just see two of the other aircraft in

the formation, condensation trails spiralling from the rotor-tips creating strange patterns. The deafening drone of the engine is broken by the alarm bell signalling the standby. Twenty seconds to remove the masks, stow them safely and prepare for the exit. Green light and go, exit!

The nerves you were feeling get blown away by the blast of air. In your peripheral you can see the streams of bodies leaving the other aircraft and within a few seconds the base is visible, getting larger every second as you manoeuvre into your quadrant. You get a straight approach and with very little effort you are able to make a good docking, settle down and start flying the formation. The ant-like figures around the outside of the formation, one-by-one, meld into the picture. From where you are it looks good, the far side is definitely complete and you start to pray that it is happening behind you. Without any apparent reason the centre of the formation breaks frantically. You glance at your altimeter, 9,000ft, what is going on? The base has broken completely and there are people fighting to move out from the centre. A small funnel on the right and the centre is collapsing. A fully formed canopy comes rocketing up through the middle of the formation, catching three of the base 120 and sending them cartwheeling through the air. What happened?

A cameraman with three inches of exposed bridle was sitting in the lead aircraft. His bridle was caught on the corner of another jumper’s rig when they stood up on the standby bell. Three inches of bridle was now seven inches, loose and flapping. As the formation built, the cameraman made a transition to sit and dropped to 800 feet directly below the skydive. The seven inches of bridle became one foot four inches, which was just enough to pull the pin and the rest is history...

This story is thankfully fiction but I hope it has sent a shiver down your spine and made you think.

Safety in a Big way Your Kit

As experienced jum pers we are all responsible for the m aintenance of our skydiving equipm ent. The developm ent of kit over the years has im proved the safety standards of the sport bu t there is still kit out there tha t shou ld be looked at w ith a different view. It is no longer good enough to accept the m in im um standard for equipm ent supplied by the m anufacturer. Look again and w ork it out for yourself.

In the AircraftEstablish where you should be sitting in the aircraft. If you are part of an organised group the organiser should tell you the best seating plan. What should be avoided is the scenario where, at 8,000ft you realise that you are in the wrong place and then start climbing over bodies to get into the correct slot. This is w hen accidents can happen by catching your kit on another person or part of the aircraft. Be aware of your equipm ent and do not treat it as if it is just a backpack of no value, this is your life on your back! Use the seat belts or restraints provided. They can save lives if there is an aircraft emergency.

Make a mental note of exactly how the aircraft is responding during the climb out and ascent. This will give you prior warning of any turbulence so that you w o n 't be surprised during your canopy ride.

Be prepared for any unusual type of exit procedure and always rem em ber

that to m ake a safe, com plete skydive you need everyone out in one piece. D on 't tu rn into an exit monster!

In the SkydiveDo not get out of your depth. We all w ant to be doing the cool and groovy skydives but if you are on the edge of control you are a danger to yourself and others.

There is a reason w e have a progression system and now, w ith the new ratings to cover all the disciplines, there is no excuse for cowboy (or cowgirl) skydivers. D on't fool yourself by accepting a slot if you know you are not really up to it. Read the m inim um requirem ents for each category and be honest w ith yourself about your abilities. If you are Category 10 you should be able to exit the aircraft under control, make a direct approach to a pre-position w ithout orbiting the formation and dock gently. If you cannot do this on a regular basis you should go back to basics! >»

Under CanopyKnow your equipm ent and get used to how the m ain responds during opening, descent and final approach. Avoid large formation loads until you are totally happy w ith your openings.

Be extra aware on tracking off, looking around, w aving off and opening; canopy collisions are the m ain problem to be avoided. D uring and just after opening is one of the most critical times under canopy. If you are jum ping a zero porosity, elliptical canopy you should be used to the odd opening w hich is not on heading. C ontrary to w hat m anufacturers say, these parachutes will dive off now and again. You should be able to control the opening w ith risers or by shifting your w eight in the seat straps. Use of your rear risers m ust be second nature to you.

During your descent, stay alert and aw are of your position

over the ground as well as of those around you. You should have a plan for your descent using reference points in relation to the landing area. You are 'Pilot in Charge' so act like one.

Final ApproachD on 't all land in the same area, there 's a whole airfield to use. Final approach should be w ithout problem s if you have stuck to the basics and m ade a p redictable dow nw ind leg and base turn onto finals. 'Predictable' is the w ord that really covers the safety factors d u rin g any descent. If everyone around can easily see w hat you are do ing and you d o n 't give them any radical surprises, there is no reason for an accident.

If you like to spiral, stall and spin before hooking in front of others, this is not the place. There are too m any other canopies in the air.

I am the last person to suggest that sw ooping should not be allowed. But it is even more im portan t to give yourself ru les if you enjoy a fast landing.

We have had an abundance of letters about BritlOO, here is a small sample...

d e a r s k y d i v e . . ,B r it IO O

I just felt I had to write to say a major thanks for a superb Brit 100 weekend at Headcom. The buzz on the DZ was phenomenal, there was something on offer to all levels of experience and throughout the whole weekend the same comments were echoed from one person to the next, as to how much they were enjoying themselves and the amount they were getting out of it.

I opted for the organised loads and had a stellar time. I lost count of the number of people telling me to have a crack at the tracking races. Chasing George Pilkington across the sky seems to be the latest craze at the moment! Something to try next time I think...Ttie tour is a stunning idea.

Andy Wright D11720

I just got back to Scotland after a fantastic long weekend with BritlOO at Hibble. This was my first visit to Target and, judging by the friendly welcome and hospitality, it certainly won't be the last. All the loads went to 14k minimum from their turbine G92 (nice aircraft Swalty!). If you wanted to get organised, videoed and debriefed with the BritlOO team, the princely fee of £1 was levied on top of regular prices - great value!

George was on hand with his new Evolution 2000 so people could try the new Vertical Speed Racing. Check this out, it’s sensational! How fast can you go? Ttie weekend was a hoot, those that weren't there missed out big style.

Dave Mckelvie

Recently my Time-Out stopped working for no apparent reason - well I did drop it, but only from 4,000ft! I sent it off to Cool & Groovy to see if their after-sales care was as good as their in-your-face ‘buy a Time-Ouf sales pitch. The offending item was posted on a Monday morning and I had it back in my hands on Thursday, the same week, working perfectly, complete with a brand new battery and all FOC! I am so impressed, that when this Time-Out wears out I will definitely buy another.

Eddie Jones D11229

After nearly 80 years jumping I have decided to take a break. I haven't renewed my membership or ratings this year. If I decide to come back it will be on a purely recreational basis. Since my first jump in 1970 on the Isle of Wight I have enjoyed the sport tremendously. Thanks lor all the support I've had from the BPA over the years and may you go from strength to strength. For now then, to everyone I know, ‘So long and thanks for all the fish’.

DaveTylcoat BPA 7723

d e a r s k / d i v eS o a p b o x C o m m e n t

Just a quick note to say I completely agree with Dave Morris on his comments in the Soapbox section. .Yes, teaching AFF can be a way to make a nice living but let us not forget the responsibility it carries with it. Without sounding too romantic about this we do owe it to the individual students and the sport to prepare these people well enough to encourage them to stay with the sport.

I do like the way the information from the council is being summarised in a nice, concise, user-friendly format, people want to be informed. Likewise the articles on FS exits, flying skills, etc from XL and others are all excellent information, keep it coming. All we need to do now is get with the programme on incident / fatality reports as per the USA Skydiving paper and we will really have an informative mag!

Martin Williams D8255

d e a r s k / d i v e . .W o m e n in t h e S p o r t

For the first time I want to write a letter to the Mag (not an artide). This is a topic I have been unsure about for a long time as I first heard a group of women clamouring for a separate event and therefore lent the idea some support. I have however recently been coaching far more mixed teams and have competed against and been beaten by women. After the results of the World Cup in Portugal there should be no doubt that skydiving should remain a mixed discipline and that the idea of excluding women from competition with men is absurd. For those not in touch with the competitive scene, there were

women on the first and third place teams (USA and Norway), they beat many all-male teams. It would, I believe, be a mistake to hanker after an all-women’s event, lured by the promise of media coverage and sponsorship, it would also eventually preclude men and women from jumping together in competition.

Although men have traditionally been seen as hardier competitors due to physiology, this idea is being successfully debunked and we are now seeing women improving their skills at a faster rate than men. Look at the

times of the women’s marathons. Since 1964, the women’s times have improved by an annual average of 2.47 minutes in comparison to men’s 1.6 minutes. Women are now frequently beating men in long distance swimming and equestrian events.I feel it would be a sad state of affairs if we decided to drag our sport back into the 1900's when sports were split into sexes and women regarded as second class competitors.

Surely I cant be alone in wondering when there is going to be constructive debate about canopy training at a formal level. I know we are not suffering the same extent of casualties as the US but still we see people doing dumb and dangerous things under perfectly good parachutes.

What I would like to see is a programme of canopy flight instruction aligned with the licence system. I'm not talking about 'hitting the pad' accuracy requirements but a system of teaching proper function, control and aerodynamics of flying our modern, ZP canopies using seminars and practical exercises. In addition we could adopt the Australian Parachute Federation method of being signed off by the CCI for your canopy.

Also, hook turns are here to stay so let's not shy away from them, lets teach those who want to hook how to do it safely and according to their capabilities. I hook, I love it and with only 1,400 odd jumps I know I am still a novice. There are skydivers out there who know far more than I do, so let’s get that information out in the public domain and avoid the accidents which involve the ambitious without the experience. Please address any views to your BPA Instructor, your CCI or a Council member and lets get some open and rational thought on the matter.

CUTAWAY CABLE PROBLEMAfter landing, an instructor noticed that on the riser of a fellow jumper, the yellow Teflon cable w as out of its stow away pocket w ith only about 2-3cms of cable pro trud ing past the loop. The jum per w as unaware.

Conclusions: We have received a

few reports o f the same problem, it does seem that some rigs can catch

the Teflon cable during norm al use.

This gradually shortens the am ount

passing through the loop; the m issing

cable gathers around the neck o f the

container. If this is le ft unchecked it

can cause an unintentional cutaway. If

the jum per is lucky, this will happen on

deployment, giving them time to

deploy the reserve. However it could

jus t as easily release during the final

turn on landing.

Recommendations: Checking

how much cable is through the loop

should be part o f the flight line

inspection. Just as important is the

jum per’s check after deployment. A

quick g lance as a m atter o f routine can save em barrassment o r a fatality.

Always do an in-flight check after

deployment.

NO BAR TACKSA canopy opened nicely until the jum per pu lled the brakes off w hen the canopy suddenly started to spiral to the right and w ould not respond to opposite toggle input. The jum per w ent for cutaw ay and reserve handles but the canopy suddenly stopped spiralling so the jum per decided to stay w ith the main. The brake line had come apart w here it m et the upper four control lines which attach to the canopy. So the jum per could only steer using rear risers. After practising flaring w ith rear risers at altitude, the jum per had a good landing.

Conclusions: On the ground it was noted that the finger-trapping on both brake lines had not been bar-tacked so that one o f them pulled out, causing the canopy to lose a control line. The canopy had been relined a t the factory and had done 85 jum ps before the problem arose (with a few reserve inspection and repacks during that time). The control line released on opening shock giving the jum per time to decide what to do. It could ju s t have easily lasted until the final turn for landing when it would have caused a severe problem.

Recommendations: Firstly the factory should have p icked this up after the line replacement, as should the person who rigged the main canopy up. But the main parachute is ju s t as much o f the jum per's responsibility. Remember the main parachute and lines are not pa rt of the six month inspection and reserve repack according to the BPA checklist. When was the last time that you had a good look a t your kit?

DROGUE NOT RELEASINGA few tandem reserve rides have been reported w ith both Strong and Vector tandem rigs w ith the same problem. The drogue release initially d id not work. One released and caused the m ain bag to fall out after the reserve had deployed and one released after walking back to the packing area. Conclusions: In both o f the above cases, the double-ended drogue release loop was used. It is possible these incidents could be attributed to the loop being too stiff, too long or unsuitable. Another view is that the drogue release is easier when the prim ary is routed through the top grommet.

Recommendations: Confirm the correct manufacture o f a ll doubleended loops and refer to safety notices and manuals for correct installation. Do some ground tests on your own rig and find out what could h inder the release before it becomes a problem.

CANOPY ON BACKWARDS

The jum per noted that the canopy was facing the w rong w ay on deploym ent and the left-hand rear riser w as actually attached to the right riser. They cutaw ay and deployed the reserve parachute.

Conclusions: This is obviously a rigging error with no mention o f who

assembled o r packed the main

parachute. This should never happen

especially when the Operations

Manual states that a ll canopies should

be inspected in a flying configuration

after being rigged to the risers.

Recommendations: Find

another rigger and packer.

TOTAL

We have had six reports of total m alfunctions due to the jum pers not being able to deploy the m ain pilot chute; four on incorrectly packed pullout systems and two on throw aw ay systems.

Conclusions: The pu llout problem

has been highlighted m any times now

but it s till catches jum pers out. Three

o f the incidents were due to not being

able to pu ll the pin (because the pilo t

chute had been incorrectly packed,

without sufficient slack) and the fourth

due to not being able to find a loose

toggle. One throwaway problem was

due to the spandex pocket being too

tight, causing a stiff pull. The other

jum p e r’s toggle had been pushed

inside the spandex pocket by

accident.

Recommendations: This is

probably one o f the m ost recurring

problems. The best recommendation

when using pullouts is to do a practice pu ll on the ground, i f i t ’s difficult then

repack the p ilo t chute. Everyone

should have a final pin check p rio r to

exit.

Team VMaxOut of nowhere, VMax leapt into international recognition by winning the America’s Cup in DeLand. For those unfamiliar with this meet, it works by awarding appropriate handicap scores to all teams so that adjusted scores are on a par with the current World Champions. The handicap is based on your last (or best) team average, so good and bad scores are accurately reflected. VMax averaged 8.8 over six rounds and adding their handicap of 13 gave an adjusted score of 21.8.

VMax were shocked to be picking up a gold ahead of teams like the Golden Knights, Space Centre FX and the DeLand Norgies. It was a close run meet and only 0.8 of a point separated VMax from DeLand Genesis, one of the top US teams and last year’s series winners. DeLand Genesis averaged 16.5 and added a handicap of 5.3.

Formed only last year, VMax which consists of Sarah Laughton, Sacha Chilton, Claire Jenkinson, Kate Stephens and Brian Vacher (camera), will be competing at the FS Nationals at Sibson. See you there!

The Longest Skydive in

HistoryJoe Kittinger’s record finally beaten after 30 years...

Adrian Nicholas made a freefall of four minutes and 55 seconds over California in March, ratified by two Cypres black box data recorders which were read by Airtec, in Germany. The previous record stood at four minutes and 36 seconds set by Joe Kittinger in 1960 when he made a drogue stabilised freefall from 102,000ft. Adrian managed to fly for ten miles, breaking his existing record for the furthest human flight. Katarina Ollikainen had made improvements to Adrian’s DeGayardon wingsuit, improving performance.

In February, Skydive City set the standard for 100-way speed by building three consecutive 100-ways, one by 50 seconds and held for 16 seconds. We used a Casa and five Otters and jumps were from 14,500-16,000ft using oxygen. The main organisers were Guy Wright of the Blue Sky Ranch, and TK. This competition is being conducted throughout the USA, consisting of three rounds with 3 points. DeLand, Skydive City, Skydive Chicago, Perris Valley and Skydive Arizona are taking part. It is being judged on video later this year.

Other Attractions: Facilities of Pinetrees Country Club available (15 min drive) - gym, steam rooms, bar, nightclub. Bunaee running DZ on bad weather days.

View from Visiting Jumper: These people really look after you, they come and pick you up from a Northern Irish port if you ring first. It’s uncanny, the aircraft is new, the hangar is new, the ‘sky centre' is new (canteen to you and me), the whole lot looked new. They are open all week, tell them what time you want to start, then they will gear it up around you.Accommodation is excellent and they are about to add an extra 54 beds, pine would you believe! The jumpers rallied around us and made sure that we had as much night life as we could handle (that includes lifts to and from whereever you go). I know that every DZ has its own following but Wild Geese is ahead of lots of others with the way it treats its jumpers and also visitors. You are all made to feel so welcome, with the professional touch and smartness that seems to be edging into skydiving.
