When we read the Biblical passage describing Isaiah’s call we note immediately its very special mise-en-scène. Isaiah was witnessing the glory of God; he could hear the Seraphim singing God’s praises (Isa 6, 1-3).

Isaiah’s reaction to the Divine Presence focused on his own sinfulness:
“Woe is me,
I am doomed!
For I am a man of unclean lips,
Living among a people of unclean lips” (Isa 6, 5)

Isaiah was purified so that he might encounter God and hear his message:
“Then one of the Seraphim flew to me
Holding a burning ember …,
He touched my mouth with it.
‘See’ he said, ‘now that this
has touched your lips,
your wickedness is removed,
your sin purged”
(Isa 6, 6-7).

I should spend time reading Isaiah 60.
