TRANSCRIPT
Commitment to quality. Nutraceuticals and probiotics. Production capacity and growth. If you were to survey the market landscape within the food processing industry, chances are that these are some of the phrases you would come across. Processors continue to see developing consumer trends in the wake of a slowly recovering economy, all of which tie to these familiar phrases. When looking for a link between them, food safety is the common denominator that remains a focal point for 2012 and beyond.
The inception of the Food Safety Modernization Act has clearly put emphasis on safety preventive measures within the food processing industry, which only strengthens the need for quality machinery and components. This puts added pressure on production plants to ensure FDA compliant materials and processes are common throughout the industry, and will only become more prevalent as the economy continues to grow. Whether plants are updating obsolete equipment or simply performing routine maintenance, it is imperative that our bearing solutions are up to the challenge of meeting all safety protocols.
Second only to food safety, but equally important, is a heavy focus on cost control. Reliability measures such as corrosion and bacteria resistance must be carefully balanced with the need to minimize cost output. As a result, newer greases and design considerations are being developed to extend machine lifetime and reduce downtime for maintenance. Non-relubricatable bearings and solid lube grease are just two examples of how NTN is looking to add life and value to processing equipment.
It is truly an exciting time to be part of this industry. The food processing industry continues to thrive, and we have the inventory to support increasing demand. With a continued commitment to providing innovative and reliable bearing solutions, NTN is poised to be a name brand in food processing for years to come. We invite you to read further about some of the latest innovations from NTN in the food processing arena.

Beth Courtwright, Territory Manager for New England
Born and raised in Southborough, MA, Beth still lives there today with her husband Steve and three children. Beth joins NTN from ITW Paslode where she was a District Manager for ten years. She enjoys watching her children play sports (especially baseball and softball), and hiking and exploring the outdoors with her family.
“My husband and I are passionate sports fans. I love my hometown teams while my husband, being from New York, roots for the ‘dreadful’ Yankees. It’s never a stable home come October.”
Jared Trebes, Territory Manager for Central Illinois and Southern Chicago
Jared and his wife Kelli recently welcomed their first child, Riley. Settled in Huntley, Illinois, Jared spent five years as an assistant golf professional and six years in sales with SMC Corporation. So it’s no surprise he’s an avid golfer who enjoys spending time with his family.
“The best thing about being a new dad is having my newborn sleeping on my chest. Well, sleeping in general is good! And even though babies don’t really ‘smile’ at one month, when he does smile at me it is such a happy feeling.”
Matt Steffens, Territory Manager for Upper Midwest (MN, ND, SD)
Matt’s a Chicago native but lives in Wyoming, MN with his wife Heather and two children. After five years with Rexnord and running a successful manufacturer’s rep firm, Matt’s industry knowledge and experience are proving very valuable to NTN. He coaches youth football and basketball and is active in local hockey. He also tries to find time for hunting and fishing, and riding his Yamaha Warrior (a former Yamaha show bike). We just hope he wears the proper attire for those hobbies.
“At a former employer’s global sales meeting I attended, we had a choice of an afternoon recreational activity. I chose a massage at the resort spa. To accommodate those golfing, we were instructed to wear attire for our afternoon activity in exception to the business casual dress code. So I wore a robe and flip-flops to the morning meeting sessions. The president appreciated the humor and was impressed that I followed instructions well. However, I believe for future meetings they will clarify the recreational attire instructions.”
Cathy Pugh, Territory Manager for parts of OH, KY, IN, IL
Cathy’s a Lima, OH native but now lives in Cincinnati, OH with her two dogs. She joins NTN from MSC Industrial Supply and prior tenure with Motion Industries. Cathy enjoys boating, traveling and sporting events. She is a dedicated fan of Ohio State football, Reds baseball and Xavier basketball. We welcome Cathy to the NTN family.

MARKET FOCUS Selecting a Reliable Bearing Solution for Food Processing
The food processing industry covers a wide range of product specializations, each with its own environmental characteristics and design challenges. Proper component selection begins with understanding the environmental challenges that you application is faced with.
Temperature Stability. Baking and refrigeration can introduce thermal stresses that can lead to lubricant breakdown, which is responsible for 70 percent of premature bearing failures. Heat treated and specialized ball bearings are highly recommended to reduce the degrading effects of extreme temperature application.
Humidity and Fluid Corrosion Resistance. Fluid contamination and post-processing washdown can catalyze rust development, which can lead to food contamination. Stainless steel or specialty plated bearings are a near-must requirement given the stringent FDA requirements governing the operation of food processing lines.
Dry Particle Corrosion Resistance. Dust particles in pharmaceutical and grain processing environments present their own set of challenges. Without optimum sealing protection, these finely sized elements can easily find their way between ball bearings and raceways, slowly corroding the inner bearing surfaces. Superior sealing systems and solid lube grease are ideal for protection against dry particle corrosion. Vibration Stability. Shaker screens and separators are commonly found within dry goods environments and can subject bearings to significant levels of vibration. Bearing units featuring solid base construction are highly recommended not only for vibration resistance, but for shock and impact load stability.

MVP
