REGIONAL PARTNERS IN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

The Mission of the Northwest Technical Center is to educate today's learners by providing comprehensive career and technical education programs that enhance career awareness, promote lifelong learning,

and develop the skills to be responsible, productive citizens for today and tomorrow.

The Franklin Grand Isle Workforce Investment Board (FGIWIB) is a volunteer consortium of businesses, educational entities, service agencies and community members working together to identify and address current and future workforce needs. Our mission is to foster development of skilled life-long learners and enrich the quality of lives by providing opportunities for people to achieve their highest potential. The FGIWIB believes that a skilled workforce is essential to an economy that is sound, diverse and competitive. With our partners, we work to determine what we want for our economic future, organizing education and training programs that will support businesses and individuals in shaping a qualified workforce. FGIWIB works with businesses and their employees to deliver customized or broad-based training. Training can be held on-site or at other locations as necessary, including the WIB Training Center in Swanton. Businesses may be eligible for funding through the Vermont Training Program, a grant delivered through Vermont Department of Economic Development.

The Lake Champlain Islands Economic Development Corporation (LCIEDC) is the Island resource for doing business in Grand Isle County. Located right in the center of the Champlain Islands, LCIEDC is a one-stop shop for business advising, access to resources, and people who are connected to the community.

Customized Education and Training NWTC, FGIWIB & LCIEDC can help meet your education and training needs. We can offer training at the WIB Training Center in Swanton, NWTC, in the Islands or at your worksite. Our instructors are experts in their fields. The classes listed in this brochure are only partially representative of the possibilities available. Customized training and contracted vendor training can be arranged in a wide variety of fields.

Billing Services/Tuition NWTC, FGIWIB & LCIEDC will work with the requirements of your company policy. We can provide invoices for purchase orders, process credit card payments, bill upon completion, track attendance, develop evaluation reports or other arrangements to meet your needs. Some training may be eligible for VSAC Non-Degree grant funding, as well as Vermont Training Program funds through Vermont Department of Economic Development. Individuals may also be eligible for funding through the Vermont Department of Labor and other funding sources.

NWTC Facilities Northwest Technical Center Classrooms and labs are available from 3:00 - 10:00pm on school days and from 8:00am - 8:00 pm on weekends and school vacations. Special arrangements can be made for alternative hours. The Northwest Technical Center is handicapped accessible. We offer fully equipped lab space for welding, automotive, building trades, culinary arts, cosmetology and office practices. Another location is a medical training facility located at the Valley Crossroads Plaza next to the Northwestern Medical Center.

WIB Training Center in Swanton The Franklin Grand Isle Workforce Investment Board Training Center is located in Swanton for training and meetings during day, evening and weekend hours. The site has a networked computer lab able to accommodate 10.

Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources

Cooking Methods and Applied Technique Students will examine various cooking methods as well as applications. Dry heat, moist heat, and combination methods will all be discussed and why we use them. Traditional cooking techniques will be used as well as new modern techniques as well (sous vide.) Within the course we will focus on specific dishes and understand the relationship between ingredients and method. This is a great introductory course for cooking enthusiast or professionals.

Internship Program This is a Franklin Grand Isle Workforce Investment Board program that has a rolling enrollment to accommodate young adults (17-college graduates) interested in exploring careers, local job opportunities, available methods of higher education and training, and learning employment skills through a possible work-experience with an employer that could lead to job placement. Introduction to Artisan Breads & Laminated Dough's In this course students will have an opportunity to explore the varying aspects of breads from different regions of the world. Learn about fermentation, preferment's, and tips on how to create success with every loaf. Students will also have a chance to work hands on with various laminations such as croissants, Danish, puff pastry, and fillings. Create cost effective uses for extra material, as well as something incredible delicious.

Introduction to Pastry Welcome to the sweeter side of the kitchen. Students will cover various methods for creating fillings, garnish, and technique. We will touch on chocolate, garnish, application, etc. Classic deserts and base recipes, along with cakes as well as entremets. If you have an artistic flare and need a new medium this is a perfect class for you. Meat Training Courses Take home what you prepare through this unique course. Student will learn:

ServSafe-Certification Training for Food Service Workers National Restaurant Association Education Foundation certification training for food service workers. Learn knowledge and skills to prevent food, and safety related incidents, improve food service operations, and reduce risk and incidence of food borne illness. Certification testing is done at the end of the class.

Techniques for the Holiday Meal Have fun by focusing on regional holiday specialties through the exploration of various cooking methods and techniques, artisan breads, laminated doughs and pastries. Cooking methods include dry heat, moist heat, and combination methods. This course offers options to a busy time of year. The beautiful benefit is taking home the finished product.

Architecture & Construction

Clean Sweep - Custodial/Light Maintenance Training A 6-week custodial/light maintenance training program with 2 hours of class Mondays through Thursdays and an unpaid worksite placement at a local school, agency or employer site. The purpose of the course is to prepare individuals for entry level employment in the custodial field. Topics: Communication, blood borne pathogens, safety, slip and fall procedures, professional/industrial cleaning, equipment, techniques, restrooms, floor care, carpets, windows, etc. Students will gain hands on experience while placed in a local school or business. Electricity - Basic Industrial A first course in industrial electricity-Ohm’s law, voltage, current, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power calculations, symbology, resistors, diodes, power supply, wiring, circuits, switches, meters, etc. Class combines theory and hands on. Electricity - Advanced Industrial for Manufacturing This course continues where Basic Electricity ends for manufacturing maintenance technicians. Focus is on troubleshooting electrical systems,

Heating System Service and Repair Learn the various diagnostic tools in the heating and ventilating fields, how heating systems and their controls operate, how to understand heating system electrical wiring diagrams, and troubleshoot various residential heating systems. Topics:

Safety: Personal Protective Equipment (eye and hand protection), electrical safety (high / low voltage, lock out/tag out, fuel safety oil/gas), fire safety, venting

Principles of Combustion: Fuel, oxygen, ignition, by-products of combustion- carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water vapor

Types of Equipment and Fuels: Oil / gas furnace system components, oil / gas boiler system components, water heaters, thermostats, pilots, electronic ignition

Basic Heating System Design: Hydronic and hot air systems; how/why they work; Sequence of Operation: A to Z of heating system operation

Wiring Diagrams: Read/understand heating system electrical wiring diagrams; Diagnostic Tools: Basic tool pouch-hand tools, specialized tools, multimeter diagnostic usage, and hands-on tool use lab

Control Systems: Intro to control systems and how they are used; hands-on control system lab

Lead-Based Paint Safety Course - EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) RRP (Renovate, Repair, Painting)

Contractors and Landlords who disturb lead paint while working in a pre-1978 home or child occupied facility must be Lead-Safe Certified. Learn VT and EPA rules. Don’t miss out on work or risk fines because you are not certified.

The Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) changes how contractors work on certain buildings with significant impact on renovation and remodeling Effective 2010, if you work on a house or child occupied facility built before 1978 the rule may apply regardless of who owns the facility or is paying for the work. Registration includes class materials/supplies/ testing. Class has hands-on skills assessments. Students must participate and be assessed as "proficient" to sit for the certification test. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health) 10 Hour Certification Class This course is for construction workers/ contractors-both those new to the industry and as a reminder to those working in the industry to the hazards associated with their work. Topics: Hazards, personal protective Equipment, materials handling, storage and use, hand/power tool safety and work zone safety including how to recognize, avoid and prevent workplace hazards. Students will test and then receive their OSHA 10 Certification Card upon satisfactory completion of course. Offered by the Franklin Grand Isle Workforce Investment Board. Welding Technology I This basic course introduces four types of welding: AC/DC stick, Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG); and Oxygen-Acetylene. Students learn to demonstrate proficiency in horizontal and vertical applications. Oxy-acetylene and plasma cutting will also be covered. This is a hands-on course.

Welding Technology II Welding II is a next step for those who have taken Welding I or have welding experience. Students work on skills specific to their interest or need. MIG, TIG, ARC and Oxy-acetylene on various materials and stock configurations are covered. Course prepares students for American Welding Society Certification testing. Not offered in the Summer.

Accounting / Bookkeeping – Introduction and Advanced

Based on inquiries, students can enroll in an introductory or advanced course. The introductory accounting/bookkeeping class covers creating and understanding financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements and interrelationships, and accrual vs. cash methods of accounting. The advanced accounting/bookkeeping class addresses accounting principles, financial statements, analyzing, classifying & recording transactions, adjusting and closing procedures, business work sheets, inventory, capital, equity, receivables, payables, cash, payroll, depreciation, taxation and more. QuickBooks is use the most popular computerized Bookkeeping/Accounting program for personal and small business finances. The introductory topics include: company set up, earnings, deductions, checking, payroll, inventory, purchase orders, assets, equity, tax reports, and more. Professional Development Center for Educators and Partner Agencies The Northwest Technical Center’s Continuing Education Office is pleased to offer workshops and coursework developed through community partnerships, collaborative arrangements and networking. The Career Development office will support the local growth of educators and their partner agencies by building upon the expertise and experience of our educational resources and immediate and surrounding communities. Educators can earn professional development hours or college credit. Paraeducator Training & Certification Earn your certification as a paraeducator through an online course that meets Title I, Section 1119 compliance for highly-qualified paraeducators. Complete online coursework that covers Reading, Writing, and Mathematics as it relates to supporting instruction and comprehension. The course averages 40 hours and ends with assessments to earn certification. Practice assessments are included in the program. Each module in the course: • Ends with a 10-question test. • Contains application questions perfect for small group discussion. • Are research-based and written by practitioners. • Align with CEC standards for paraeducators. At the end of this course, you will be certified as a Paraeducator.

Return to Learning Workshop-FREE Return to Learning is for adults entering or thinking about returning to school or training. Learn skills to be successful in any educational setting, school survival tips, hidden rules of adult education and develop a plan to guide successful completion of programs or courses. Health Science & Human Services

Anatomy & Physiology Online Is online learning for you? This six-week online course begins with an explanation of the nature of matter and a review of the principles of chemistry that are important to human physiology. We'll place an emphasis on the organization of the human body and the differences between nonliving matter and living organisms. We'll also cover cell anatomy and physiology because all life processes are ultimately carried out at the cellular level. You'll also learn principles of genetics and gain an understanding of how traits are passed from one generation to the next. Online, 6 Week Course. Available every month. Clinical Medical Assistant Training Program In less than one year, students can work as a professional medical assistant in a doctor's office, clinic or similar health care organization. As the medical

profession continues to grow as a result of the population living longer and advancements in procedures, treatments, and medications, more patients will require medical services. Therefore, an increasing number of CMAs will be needed to handle the many responsibilities for which they are uniquely trained. The program provides the CMA learner with entry level theory and limited “hands-on” training in basic and routine clinical and office tasks. The graduate will be able to assist in EKG, x-ray procedures, first-aid and phlebotomy. To prepare for certification as a Clinical Medical Assistant, students complete 100+ hours of class time and 40 hours of a clinical practicum. The course includes Medical Terminology, Phlebotomy Training I, and Clinical Medical Assistant. Upon successful completion of the coursework and practicum, students will sit for the certification exam. Not offered in the Summer.

CPR/First Aid/AED Course & Certification / Recertification American Heart Association (Adult/Child/Infant) This certification course covers CPR/AED for Adults and Children and First-Aid including relief of choking, seizures, heart attack, diabetic emergencies, allergic reactions, epi pen use, burns, bites, poisoning, broken bones, bleeding control, bandaging, glove removal, temperature related emergencies, and how to aid with other life threatening conditions. This course is for new or renewing/recertifying students. This course is best fit for teachers, summer camp counselors, coaches, fitness instructors, foster care and social workers, nannies, parents, grandparents, babysitters (14 years or older) construction workers, and general workforce. Who should NOT take this course - medical or health care professionals for whom BLS certification is needed. There is no written test. Certification: American Heart Association - Official 2-year certification card given at class.

Customized Employer On-Site Emergency Response Training The Franklin Grand Isle Workforce Investment Board offers CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogen and Emergency Response in the Workplace (CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens, and AED) to your employees in the workplace. Fundamentals of Early Childcare This class is required for all new staff at childcare centers and is highly recommended for newly registered providers and those who are interested in meeting CDA requirements. This 45 hour course introduces professionals working with young children and their families to the first level of skills and knowledge in five areas: child development, teaching and learning, families and communities, healthy and safe learning environments, and

professionalism and program organization. The competencies that define this level can be found on the Northern Lights Core Competencies for early childhood professionals; Level I. Introduction to Licensing and Basic Specialized Care Orientation are also requirements of the class. The class can be challenged at CCV for college credits. Licensed Nurse Assistant (LNA) Training Program Northwest Technical Center Licensed Nurse Assistant Training Program is approved by the Vermont Board of Nursing. Training includes LNA orientation, 60+ hours of Classroom/lab, State licensing exam prep and 32 hours (4 days) of clinical practice. Clinical placements are at Northwestern Medical Center, St. Albans Healthcare, Franklin County Rehab and if available, locations in Chittenden County

The course focuses on essentials for Nursing Assistants, safe and effective practices for care in a health care setting. Students learn the basics of assisting patients, body mechanics, ethics, and communication, and prepare for the licensing exam. The written and skills LNA licensing testing is done at Northwest Technical Center and scheduled upon course completion. Applicants must be able to pass a thorough background check.

Medical Coding

In only 20 weeks, prepare for a certification in a high-demand career. Medical Coding is one of the fastest growing health-related careers due to the Electronic Medical Records Act. The medical coder is primarily responsible for abstracting and assigning the appropriate coding for claim adjudication. In order to accomplish this, the coder checks a variety of sources within the patient’s medical record, (i.e. the doctor’s notes, ordered

The coder assigns the ICD-10-CM codes, CPT® codes, and HCPCS codes to report reason for service and the service/procedures performed. This provides the medical biller with the information necessary to process a claim for reimbursement by the appropriate insurance agency. In some offices the medical coder and the medical biller are the same individual. The pre-requisite for this course is Medical Terminology (or experience equivalent) and suggested, but not required, is Anatomy & Physiology. Upon completion of the course you will be prepared to sit for your certification exam. Pre-requisite: Medical Terminology or equivalent experience. Not offered in the Summer.

Medical Office Practice An important part of the office team, the Medical Office Practices representative handles information needed for registration of patients and the billing of services to insurance companies. They provide a variety of functions including: Assignment of appropriate classification codes for office procedures; analysis of patient records; completion of medical claim forms; and registration / scheduling of patients. This career generally works in the front office of a medical office and are employed at Physicians' Offices, Billing Service, and Health Management Organizations. Not offered in the Summer.

Computer Skills are necessary for success in any Medical Office and Healthcare workplace. Refer to the Course Calendar and Course Descriptions under the Information Technology section.

Medical Terminology Online Is online learning for you? This course teaches medical terminology from an anatomical approach. Root terms are divided by each body system. The origin, a combined form, and an example of non-medical everyday usage is provided for each root term. Word Associations are provided as a learning tool. Unusual and interesting information is provided in regards to each term. Root terms are combined with prefixes and suffixes as your learning will culminate in the interpretation of several paragraphs of medical notes. Online, 6 Week Course. Available every month. **NEW as of 2015** Medication Nurse Assistant (MNA) Training Program A MNA is a licensed nursing assistant who has met the requirements of the Vermont Board of Nursing Administrative rules and who is authorized by special endorsement to administer medications to residents in nursing homes. To be eligible for endorsement as a medication nursing assistant, an applicant must: (1) hold an unencumbered Vermont LNA license;

(2) be at least 18 years of age; (3) have a high school diploma or G.E.D.; (4) have two years’ experience consisting of no fewer than 4,000 hours of LNA experience of which at least one year and 2,000 hours were acquired in a long-term care nursing facility; (5) complete an MNA training program approved by the Board; and (6) successfully complete MNA competency and math proficiency examinations approved by the Board. The MNA training program requires no fewer than: (1) 60 hours of class instruction including lab/simulation instruction; and (2) 40 hours of supervised clinical instruction

Pharmacy Technician Certification This blended 10-week course is designed to prepare students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Exam and enter the field of pharmacy as a certified pharmacy technician. The course will focus on preparing students with the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful and exciting career. Topics include: learning appropriate medical terminology; safe and accurate preparation and dispensing of prescription medications; mastery of dosage calculations and intravenous flow rates; drug compounding; dose conversions; inventory control; billing and reimbursement. Pre-Acceptance: Based on passing Mathematics Computation assessment Pre-Requisites: Medical Terminology or equivalent experience. Advanced internet navigation skills. Access to computer. Recommended, but not required is Anatomy & Physiology.

Phlebotomy Training & Certification Co-Developed with UVM Medical Center (Interview with UVMMC Upon Successful Completion) Background checks will be conducted. We listened to the employers and you, the students, and merged both Phlebotomy I and II by working alongside the University of Vermont Medical Center to deliver one course that ends with national certification and endorsed by the largest hospital in Vermont. Plus, your instructors are employees at the Northwestern Medical Center. Phlebotomists perform blood collection procedures and transports and processes blood samples. This course provides theoretical and technical introductory skills of a phlebotomist including anatomy and physiology of circulatory system, medical terminology, hospital departments and clinical laboratory procedures, safety, types of laboratory analyses, specimen collection including techniques, equipment, and sources of error. This course also reviews medical legal issues in the practice of phlebotomy,

asepsis and infection control, CPR/first aid, and capillary collection. Built into this course is instruction on how to create a basic resume and how to strengthen interview skills. In addition, Northwestern Technical Center has been approved by the National Healthcare Association to offer the nationally approved Phlebotomy Technician Certification Prep course and to be a testing site for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician examination. In order to sit for this certification, students must complete 84 classroom hours, clinical hours (hours to be determined) and must complete the basic venipuncture requirements as stated by the National Healthcare Association. Clinical hours and clinical placement will be provided by Northwest Technical Center and its educational affiliate, the University of Vermont Medical Center. Upon successful completion of the course and based on teacher recommendation, students will be granted a job interview by the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Prerequisite: None determined as of September 2016.

Basic Computer Training This is an introductory class intended to create a "user friendly" computer comfort zone. The course contains a lot of hands-on computer time. Topics are tailored to each person's needs, but can include email, exploring the internet, using social media sites like Facebook, and using computer applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Lots of instructor support and classmate engagement to make this technology learning experience fun.

Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMTB) Topics Included in the EMT Basic program: Introduction to emergency care, well-being of the EMT-B, medical legal and ethical issues, the human body, baseline vital signs, sample history, professional rescuer CPR, airway management, and scene size-up. The student will also learn initial assessment, focused history for the medical and trauma patients, detailed physical exam, focused physical exam. Giroux General Transport in Barre at 802 476-4679 A Class B CDL allows a driver to operate commercial trucks that have an attached cab and cargo area with a combined weight greater than 26,000 pounds, as well as trucks with a detached towed cargo vehicle that weighs less than 10,000 pounds. Examples of vehicles that drivers with a Class B CDL license may operate include tow trucks, dump trucks, delivery trucks and utility trucks. Drivers of certain special-purpose vehicles, such as school buses, commercial buses, certain farm vehicles and fire engines, may have to satisfy additional test requirements. OPPORTUNITIES TO ATTEND DAYTIME CLASSES Adults without a high school diploma may enroll in daytime classes at Northwest Technical Center and on a space-available basis at no charge. Adults with a diploma may attend academic and technical classes on a space-available basis at a reduced tuition charge. Classes at Northwest Technical Center operate the entire school year. Early application for NWTC classes is essential as programs fill up quickly. Programs are available with Vermont Adult Learning allowing individuals without a diploma to access a mix of high school, technical education and adult basic education programs leading to a high school diploma.
