ýý_;ý"_=ý ý '- r-

This delightful little piece by the late Bohemian composer was first popularised as a violin solo in the hands of Kriesler and Miss Marie H all. Its tender charm of melody and sentiment are quite irresistible and the rendering is as dainty as one could wish. (S)teed 79 )

G.C. 2-2.0 Carillonneur BORLAND

A pretty valse movement, the prin:ipal theme being payed on be'ls, the piece containing other interesting bell effects. (Speed 79.)

G.C. 2-247 Les Cloches Valse PARTRID3E

Also a ball vale, a very animated and elaborate example, of undoubted effectiveness. (Speed 79.)

The Black Diamonds.

40-inch records. Be.

G.C. 2-249 Forward March DOPPLERThe Black Diamonds make their debut in this capital march, played with the utmost vigour and "go," with at the same time an unusually swept and mellow tone. The snap and finish of this performance are a delight to listen to ; the Black Diamonds evidently have a future before them. (Sßeeri 8o.)

G.C. 2-248 El Capitaine March Sousa

Fine rendering of Sousa's lilting two-step, the occasional playing of the theme on bells adds much to the effect, while the middle movement is most artistically given. (Speed Si.)

G.C. 2-253 The Guards March Out EILENBERG

This composition possesses all the warmth of melod y and colouring which belongs to high-class Con- tinental military music, and is heard to unusual advantage in the hands of the excellent Black Diamonds. (Speed 8x.)

G.C. 2-252 Soldiers' Life March SCHONELING

Another swinging march played in the super- excellent style which Marks a new standard of execution and finish in these lighter orchestral pieces. (Speed 8r.)

Sousa's Band.

10-inch record. 5s.

G.C. 464 The Warblers

This original two-step takes its name from the delightfully smooth whistling effect of the opening subject. A charming novelty. (Speed Bo.)

CONCERT MUSIC.

Mr. John Coates, with orchestral accompaniment.

12-inch record. 7s. 6d.

02108 Lohengrin's Farewell (" Lohengrin ") WAGNER

This belongs to the departure of Lohengrin in his magic boat, which concludes the last act of this opera. It is addressed to Elsa alone, as the hero in partirg hands her the gifts of his horn, his sword, and his ring. Here the mystical style is laid aside for a more tender human note, and a more melodic phrase.

LoaENGEIN (handing his horn, sword and ring to Elsa).0

- If he re - turn though I may ne'er re-ceive him.

Mr. John Coates' art is here heard at its best, the rich firm notes, the beauty of phrasing, and climax of effect belong to the best traditions of grand opera, the English tenor being not a whit behind the great Continental artists for beauty of voice and individuality of style. (S,te,'d 76.)

Published by Boosey &' Co.

10-inch record. 5s. Od. 3-2910 Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes SULLIVAN

Into this fine tenor song from "The Gondoliers," Mr. John Coates is able to infuse a spirit and dash quite beyond the reach of the average Concert tenor. So versatile an artist as Mr. Coates can sing any song in a superlative style-be it light or heavy- not that Sullivan's popular ballad is inartistic ; quite the reverse. It needs a first-rate artiste to demon- strate its possibilities. (Speed 78.)

Published by Chappell && Co.

Mr. Evan Williams.

12-Inch records. 7s. 6d. 02106 Annie Laurie It is always an advantage to hear a fine artiste in a simple ballad, it simplifies matters considerably. One has only to listen and be charmed. Mr. Evan Williams' voice grows fuller with time. and his artistry remains such as to compel admiration. (S¢ecd 79.)

CONCERT MUSIC-continued.Mr.

Evan Williams-continued.

12-Inch records. 7s. 6d. continued.

02107 Death of Nelson This is one bf the biggest things Air. Evan Williams has ever done, for us tremendous power at one end of the scale and its beauty of expression at the other. It reminds one of Lloyd or Sims Reeves in their prime. For fire and pathos the present generation has certainly heard nothing to equal it. (Sfieed 8o.l

Mr. John Harrison.

10-inch record. 8s.

G.C.3-2902 I know of two bright eyes CLUTSAM

Exquisite little lyric by Clutsam, the Eastern fl your of which is admirably suggested by its tune- fulness and tenderness of passion. The rendering is well up to John Harrison's level, and it comes out in performance as a perfect little gem. (Sfeed 8o.)

Published by Haiufeld & Co.

Mr. Hirwen Jones.

10-Inch record. 5s. r..C.3-2901 Good-night ABT

Franz Abt, composer of " When the Swallows homeward fly," wrote much beautiful part-music and one or two songs which have achieved world. wide popularity. This one is marked by a sincerity of sentiment which is well conveyed in Hirwen Jones' beautiful rendering. (Seed 79.)

Published by Stanley Lucas, {i'eher I- Co.

Mr. Ernest Pike.

10-inch record. 5s. G. c. 3-2903 The Bailiff's Daughter of Islington

A ballad of the real old English type, with its inter- esting allusions to old London. It tells a story, the tender pathos of which remains ever fresh and human, and the undoubtedly strong vocal gifts of Mr. Ernest Pike leave nothing in the rendering to be desired. (Spe d 8o.)

CONCERT MUSIC-couiinued.

Mr. Stanley Kirkby.

10-Inch records. Be.

G.C. 3-2909 The Little Red Fox SODMERVEL.1.

Another charmirg old ballad of the Green Isle, in which the hunting of the fox is told with a delicate and pathetic humour, peculiarly Irish. the tune being exceedingly lively and captivating. The words are admirably clear and the whole is excellently sung. (Sbeed78.)

Published by Morley &+ Co.

G.C. 3-2908 The Gentle Maiden SOMERVELL

Old Irish ballad arranged by Arthur Somervell. Bosh words and music are touchingly beautiful- as in all true old ballads-and the rendering` is highly artistic and finished, Mr. Kirkby having taken every advantage of the opportunities here afforded him. (S2teed 78.)

Published by Morley 6- Co.

G.C. 3-2904 The Corporal's Ditty Dix

Brisk and humorous soldier ditty by a coming composer, sung with admirable point and go by the versatile Stanley Kirkby. (Speed 79.)

Published by Boosey &' Co.

Mr. Robert Radford.

10-inch record. Ss.

G.C. 3-2907 In Cellar Cool

This grand old German ballad is the finest drinking

song ever written. It needs a real bass vocalist to do it justice, and Mr. Robert Radford revels in its octave leaps, and indeed has even increased their difficulty in taking the hazardous double octave in the last verse, a remarkable feat. (Speed 79.)

Mr. Peter Dawson.

10-inch record. Be.

c.c. 3-2338 Three for Jack

Excellent sailor's yarn with a fine swinging chorus, sung with exceptional humorous effect by Peter Dawson. (Sjteed 8o.)

03098 Ridonami la Calma TosTI

English admirers of Tosti s songs, to whom his Italian compositions are unknown, may experience a welcome surprise in listening to this sterling sacred song from his pen. Miss Tilly Koen, n, who is engaged for the next opera season, possesses a beautiful contralto voice of absolute purity of tone, and sings with perfect artistic expression. This is a superb record, reminding us of the recent " Calve" publications, which attained so high a level of siggiug and recording. (Speed So.)

G.C. 4617 Opening Chorus and Little Buttercup (" Pinafore ") SULLI VA['

This jolly sailors' chorus has a true salt flavour and is followed by "Little Buttercup, the favourite air of the opera " Pinafore." The contralto solo is charmingly sung, the whole indeed being rendered with expression and finish well in accord with Savoy traditions. (Speed qq.)

Published b; Cha¢pell 5 Co.

c.c. 4616 A British Tar is a soaring soul, Chorus (" Pinafore") SULLIVAN

Ralph, the hero of " Pinafore," is a common sailor, and this song is given here by Sir Joseph Porter in order tot nstil democratic sentiments into the bosom of the ordinary seaman. The opening male chorus has that simple straightforward tunefulness which characterises " Pinafore," a humorous piece of partwriting follows, succeeded by a finale suggesting the sailor's hornpipe. The whole is very clearly and brightly sung, and with excellent vocal tone. (Speed 8r.)

DUET.

Messrs. John Harrison and Robert Radford.

12-Inch record. 7e. 6d.

04014 The Moon hath raised her Lamp above BENEDICT

There is no sign of falling off in the quality of this fine series of duets. Those unacquainted with this number from Benedict's opera will have a delightful surprise, for this is sure'y the finest duet for male voices in the English language The rendering is in the very best hands and satisfies all expectations. (Speed 79.)

Mr. Harry Lauder.

12-inch records. 7s. 6d.

01004 She is my Daisy One of Harry Lauder's old favourites, of which the record now made is altogether finer than the one previously done. The patter is exceptionally clear and the comedian is in his very best voice and comic form. (Speed 8r.)

Published by Francis, Day &' Hunter.

01003 I've something in the bottle for the morning

Another very fine record of perhaps Harry Lauder's most famous song. This is the Scotch comedian to the life-one cannot have more. (Sßeed 79.)

Published by Francis, Day & Hunter.

10-inch record. Bs.

G.C. 3711 Poor John A song with a humour of a distinctly fresh and clever type. It is admirably sung, and quite the best thing from the other side of the Atlantic we have had fora long time. (Speed78.)

Published by Francis, Day 6- Hunter.

G.C. 45545 Causerie, Op. 50 A. GRÜNF1 l n

Mr. Alfred Grünfeld excels all other pianists of whatever calibre in obtaining a reproduction of the actual pianoforte tone with all its limpid clearness and beauty. This Causerie is a happy example of his well-known talents as a composer. It is o piece of charmingly melodious writing replete with dainty

and brilliant pianistic effects. (Speed 77.)

VIOLIN.

Mischa Elman.

10-Inch record. 9s.

G.c. 3-7915 Swing Song Exquisite little gem with a restful swinging rhythm, played with all the finished art and ultra tender- ness of feeling which to Mischa El man comes as second nature. An exceedingly beautiful record. (Sjteed 76.)

G.C. 7758 Highland Fling

r..C. 7759 Sword Dance An exact and faithful reproduction of the bagpipes is well within the scope of the Gramophone as these excellent records testify. The Sword Dance is ap ropriately wild and inspiriting, and the Highland Fling particularly animated and lively. (Speed 8o.)
