INSTALLATION OF PROFESSOR P. SERRACINO INGLOTT AS RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY
OPENING DAY CEREMONY - ACADEMIC YEAR 1991/92
33
The Opening Day Ceremony ofthe academic year 1991/92, which was held at the Main Quadrangle on Tuesday, 1st October, 1991, saw another record intake of nearly 1,200 new students.
On this occasion, the new Rector, Rev. Professor Peter Serracino Inglott was formally installed in a ceremony, which the University has not witnessed since 1964.
In his address, the Chancellor ofthe University, Judge Maurice Caruana Curran said that this was the first time that the University had a Rector elected by its own Council as provided for in the Education Act of 1988, and this was a further important step for the University's autonomy.
The Chancellor stated that the University was fortunate to have for its Rector "a man of vision" at such an important stage of its development when the student population has reached a new peak of 3,500 including a number of foreign students.
The Chancellor then referred to the academic career of Professor Serracino Inglott (popularly known as "Father Peter") at the Universities of Malta, Oxford (where he was Rhodes scholar), at the "Cattolica", Milan, as well as at the "Institute Catholique", Paris, where he later served as Visiting Professor in Philosophy of Law at the Sorbonne. Moreover, the Rector is internationally known for his interest in the artistic, scientific and technological fields.
Moreover the Chancellor stressed the human qualities of the new Rector and described him as a "humble man".
The Rector's reply took the form of a poetic prayer in Maltese:
Nirringrazzja lill-Kancillier u lilkom ilkoll. Imma f'dan il-waqt xejn rna nhoss Ii jixraq li nghid hlief li nitlob lill-Mulej, sabiex:
ahna l-imxennqin ghac-certezza nagharfu nhabbtu bwieb il-ghomja halli minn ghajnejhom nircievu f' ghajnejna merzuq dawl;
ahna l-imlebilbin ghal-liberta nagharfu nfittxu fil-pjazez liz-zopop halli minghandhom nitharrgu f'zifna gdida;
ahna bil-ghatx ta' l-intelligenza nagharfu nittawlu f'nieqet it-tarbija halli minn tbissimitha nisiltu lezzjoni l' gherf; ,
ahna herqana ghall-verita nagharfu nistaqsu lill-imbikkem halli minghandu nisimghu ghanjet eghgubijiet il-holqien;
Hekk il-kategoriji tal-filosofija jghaddu mill-gharbiel tal-misteru tas-Salib.
AMEN.

The Installation Ceremony was followed by the celebration of Holy Mass by the Chaplain, Rev Paul Pace S.J. with a liturgical drama produced by students from the Theatre and Liturgy Course.
The students were also addressed by the President of the Kunsill ta' l-Istudenti Universitarji (KSU), Mr John Grech.
A week's programme of activities was drawn up especially for freshmen. This included a series of four talks organized by the University Counselling Services on Study Skills such as listening, notetaking, memory and essay-writing. The University Librarian, Dr Paul Xuereb, provided students with information concerning the use of the Library, while a programme of Sports activities was organized by Mr Louis Borg, Sports Director at the Faculty of Education. The Pro-Rector, Professor Roger Ellul Micallef and Rev Dr Saviour Chircop made a presentation on the "History of the University - Its role today" .
