THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all people for all time.

LENT AT RESURRECTION PARISH The Holy season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 14th. This 40-day time of preparation for the celebra-tion of Easter is marked as a time of penance reflection and prayer. We in-
vite all of our parish members to enter deeply into this special time both in your personal spiritual practices as well as by participating in the opportunities we will be offering throughout the season.
There are three traditions in the spiritual life that Catholics emphasize in Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Charity (Almsgiving):
Fasting: Traditionally, we fast from certain foods and from meat on the Fridays of Lent. However, we can expand our understanding of this practice by fasting from other things and even from things like anger, selfishness etc. Choose a way that will bring you closer to the Lord and help you on your spiritual journey. Charity: The practice of giving to others during Lent is a beautiful practice. Mite boxes, soup suppers and other opportunities to sacrifice for others unites us deeply with Jesus, who sacrificed all for us. Choose a charity or project that expresses your concern for others and offer some help (time, treasure or talent) in support of those in need. Prayer: The strengthening of our relationship with God is a central part of Lent. Setting aside a time and place to draw close to the Lord is at the heart of this sacred season. The rosary, bible reading, Divine Mercy devotions, frequent meditation and daily Mass are some of the common practices that can make Lent a fruitful time for us. 3 Resurrection Parish offers the following opportunities to help you have a prayer-filled Lent: Daily Mass is offered Monday through Saturday at 8:30 am - Recitation of the Holy Rosary following. Stations of the Cross after 8:30 Mass & 2/28&3/14 Sacrament of Penance 4:00pm Saturdays and on Reconciliation Monday, March 26th (tba)
2018 Annual Catholic Appeal
This week begins the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. We thank all who have participated with a gift to the 2017 Appeal and ask that everyone prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2018 Appeal.
The work and services made possible through your donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal help people in Brooklyn and Queens in ways that no one parish can alone.
We encourage all to watch the brief 2018 ACA Video online at:

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Due to Maria Chauca’s recent move, Joe Buono, one of our Sacristans, has been washing and ironing our Church altar linens, especially the purificators used to purify and cleanse
the sacred vessels (chalices and ciboria). We are in need of a few volunteers to help in this ministry. Please see or call Fr. With for more information. Thank you and God Bless.
