CASE 2504CASES OF ASME BOILER AND

    PRESSURE VESSEL CODE

    Approval Date: .

    Case 2504

Use of SA-240, 16Cr-4Ni-6Mn, Type 201LN (UNS S20153)Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels

Section VIII, Divisions 1 and 2, and Section XII

Inquiry: Under what conditions may SA-240 UNS S20153 plate, sheet, and strip be used in the

manufacture of Section VIII, Divisions 1 and 2 and Section XII welded pressure vessels?

Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that SA-240 UNS S20153 may be used for the manufacture

of Section VIII, Divisions 1 and 2, and Section XII welded pressure vessels provided the following

    additional requirements are met.

    (a) The heat treatment requirements are given in SA-480.(b) The minimum design temperature shall be -320F (-196C). The maximum design temperature

shall be +800F (+427C) for Section VIII Divisions 1 and 2, and +650F (+343C) for Section XIIservice.

    (c) The maximum allowable stress and design stress intensity values shall be as shown in Tables 1,2, 3, and 4.

    (d) For Section VIII, Division 2, all cold formed heads shall be reheat-treated in accordance with (a)above and all other cold formed materials subjected to an extreme fiber elongation of more than4% as determined by AF-605(a) shall be reheat-treated in accordance with (a) above.

    (e) For Section XII construction the rules of Article TF-4 shall be met.(f) For external pressure use Fig. CS-2, Section II, Part D.(g) This Case number shall be shown on the Manufacturer's Data Report.
