    Application

The Type MVAX relay supervises thetrip circuit of a circuit breaker, initiating audible alarm and visualindication if the trip circuit fails or themechanism does not operate. Four types are available givingsupervision as follows:Relay type Faults detectedMVAX 12 Failure of trip

Type MVAX 31 gives supervision withthe circuit breaker in either state, andtype MVAX 21 with circuit breakerclosed only.If required, the alarm units of typesMVAX 21 and MVAX 31 can beoperated via pilot wires.Type MVAX 91, three seperate MVAX 31s in a size 8 case.Type MVAX 12, 21Trip Circuit SupervDescription

The relays are basically attractedarmature units of simple and robustconstruction having a positive actionwithout chatter.Type MVAX12 is a single unit whichis simply connected across the tripcircuit supply as shown in Figure 2(a).The unit is normally energised anddrops off if the trip voltage is lost orfalls below approximately 40% ofnominal. The unit picks up below 80%of rated voltage.

Figure 1: Type MVAX relay withdrawn from ca, 31, 91sion RelaysTo avoid operation due to voltagedips caused by faults in other circuitsa resistance-capacitance time delaycircuit is incorporated to give 100msdelayed drop off.Type MVAX 21 consists of two unitsconnected as shown in Figure 2(b).Under healthy conditions with thecircuit breaker closed, both units areenergised. If the trip circuit becomesopen or the supply fails, unit RL2drops off and opens contact RL21 tode-energise unit RL1. When the circuitbreaker is open, the auxiliary switchshunts contact RL21 to hold in unit RL1.

The units are delayed (by means ofcopper slugs) on drop off for a total of400ms, to prevent a false alarm dueto voltage dips caused by faults inother circuits or during a normaltripping operation, when unit RL2 ismomentarily short circuited by the selfreset trip relay contact. If the trip relayfails to reset due possibly to failure ofthe circuit breaker trippingmechanism, the alarm is initiated.Type MVAX 31 consists of three unitsconnected as shown in Figure 2(c).Under healthy conditions with thecircuit breaker closed, units RL2 andRL1 are energised and the operationis the same as type MVAX 21.When the circuit breaker is open, unitRL3 is also energised via the normallyclosed auxiliary switch and unit RL1 isheld in by contact RL31. Unit RL3 willdetect trip circuit abnormalities withthe circuit breaker open, in a similarmanner to unit RL2 with the circuitbreaker closed. The units are delayed a total of400ms on drop off, as in type
