As I write this article, it is the middle of April and almost a month into New York’s Pause. To do our best to stay healthy and to flatten the pandemic curve, many of us have paused leaving our houses, we have paused vacations and travel, and we have paused our social gathers and sporting events. For some of us it has disrupted work, adding fear and uncertainty. And still others have experienced a tragic loss due to the pandemic. Yet through it all, Judaism has not paused.

Almost from the beginning of our religion’s existence, Judaism has been forced to adapt to changing times. After the destruction of the 2nd temple in 70 CE, we transitioned to rabbinic Juda-ism, involving study and prayer over scarifies and offering. We transitioned from a religion focused on the land of Israel to an existence that largely took place outside of the state of Israel, as more

Jews fled or were forced to leave Israel. We adapted and integrated external philosophies, mysticism, theologies, and ideologies through centuries of travel and challenge. During the Spanish Inquisition, we practiced Judaism in secret. In the ghettos, we found the resources we needed to keep Passover and Shabbat and live a Jewish life. We have always found a way to adapt, and we have never paused. We have never stopped to stay, dayenu, this has been enough.

Reform Jews in particular came to America to reimagine what it meant to be Jewish, integrating values and modern interpretations to allow egalitarian practices, outreach and a rational and logical approach to when and how we celebrate our sacred holidays.

The pause of today is no different, as it is forcing us to adapt once more. Moving forward, we will continue to place the value of saving a life above all else. Last month, we conducted our first (and hopefully only) online Passover Seder. We will continue to celebrate our holidays using online technology such as Zoom and Facebook live. We will observe Shabbat each week maintaining our same familiar service schedule. And, we will continue to observe our Jewish values and beliefs through Torah study, adult education, life cycle events, counseling, intro classes, religious school classes and more, online.

In the upcoming weeks, some of our students will become B’nai Mitzvah over Zoom, leading us in prayer and sharing their personal interpretations of our sacred teachings.

Our Confirmation Class will lead an online service on May 31st. Our students have worked hard, and we are proud that they will the opportunity to celebrate their achievements.

Sadly, in the midst of celebration the circle of life does not pause, and so we have tragically also been forced to attend funerals and shiva services from afar. Yet even so, our words of comfort and our online presence add comfort and support to those who mourned.

Our state and country may pause, but Judaism perseveres.

In keeping with these principles, my Installation ceremony as Rabbi of the congregation will continue as planned. I hope you will join us Friday May 15th during Shabbat services for a special blessing, and Saturday morning, May 16th, for an online study. Rabbi Sam Joseph, my mentor, my teacher from rabbinic school, and an all-around mensch, will participate from his home in Cincinnati, Ohio.

For those of you who have never been a part of an installation, it is an opportunity to ceremonially welcome and connect a new Rabbi and her congregation.

We can no longer postpone all of our joyous events; we need them now more than ever before. We need to yell out, “mazal tov,” and celebrate; we need to honor our students and lift them up.

I very much hope that you will login and support these joyous Jewish moments. Our Judaism is not, nor ever will be, on pause. May it continue to help us get through this difficult situation in the same way that it has always brought comfort, moments of joy and solace, through its heart, tradition and adaptability. Dear Friends,

I hope that everyone is well and continuing to practice social distancing and proper hand washing techniques during the pandemic and beyond. Times certainly have changed. Before, we took for granted such simple pleasures as visiting with friends or family members, going to the local mall to shop or browse, going to work or to school, finding grocery stores fully stocked with no limit on the quantities you could purchase, and just being able to leave our houses without having to wear a mask.

Life, or some semblance of life, has to go on. A large number of us are finding ourselves either out of work or working from home. Our kids and grandkids are attending school virtually. I

would like to thank Rabbi Rosenthal and Cantor Ilana for working overtime to make sure that we are staying connected the best way that we can through technology. Friday night Shabbat services, Temple Board and committee meetings, Torah study, Adult education, Passover Seder, Religious School and B'nai Mitzvah lessons, as well as, G-d forbid, Shiva, Memorial, and funeral services are all being conducted via Zoom.

Even though the Temple buildings are closed for the time being, our clergy and lay leaders are very busy keeping in touch by phone or computer to keep the Temple running as best as we can. Karen is keeping the office going and Rabbi Rosenthal, Cantor, and I are only a phone call or email away. We are here to answer any questions or discuss any of your concerns.

You should have received a phone call from a member of our Temple Board in the last few weeks. A second round of calls in ongoing. We want to see how you are doing. We have set up an online donation fund to which you may donate any amount of money if you feel so inclined. This money will go to help out Temple families who may need some help getting through this difficult situation. If you, yourselves, are in need of some help, please reach out to a Board member or directly to Alice Lambert, Outreach Chair, at (516) 551-6362. All calls will remain confidential.

We are all praying that the day comes soon in which we can all be together again. May G-d grant us all the strength, good health, and well-being to get us through these very stressful times.

Shalom,

Paul

Sisterhood Newsletter These past two months have been very trying times for all of us. Being isolated and alone is not a normal situation, nor is being afraid to be around others. I cannot wait to be able to resume my normal life.

Too much illness and death have been taking place. It is not natural for me or any of us not to be able to be with

others during their time of need. I cannot imagine losing a husband, a father, or a spouse and then not being able to

be comforted by hugs and the physical contact of family and friends. Those of us who have lost loved ones, you

know what I am talking about.

Sisterhood is mourning the loss of Dave Ellner right now. Pat lost her father due to the covid19 virus a couple of

weeks ago, and now her beloved Dave. Our hearts go out to you and your family, and we all wish for better times for

you. I cannot wait until we are together again to sincerely show you how we feel.

Fundraising Notes

Hello and I hope that this message finds you and your family in good health.

As one can imagine the Fundraising Committee has taken a break during this unprecedented time in our lives. The

Covid-19 pandemic has effected each and every one of us in a multitude of ways. Some financially and some

physically.

We hope that you if you have been fortunate enough to be coming through this financially secure that you will

consider helping the congregation family out with a donation to either our outreach fund or General fund. Many have

already made donations to our outreach fund via our new online payment portal so that we can help temple families

in need of groceries and we thank each and every one of your for those donations.

Because we have been unable to hold our Mothers Day Flower sale, Father Nature Nursery provided us with the fly-

er on the next page so that we can still have a flower sale from May 3rd to May 17th. You can print out the flyer, take

it to either of their locations, and purchase your flowers for planting right from their store. Please see next page for

details.

Until we see each other again (hopefully soon!) stay in and stay safe.

Blood Shortage! You Can Help! As we know, the April blood drive at B'nai Israel was cancelled, as were drives everywhere across Long Island. As a

result, blood supplies have been and remain at a critical level. At the request of the Long Island Blood Center we

have agreed to host a community blood drive at the Temple in late June, if and when we agree that doing so will be

safe for all of us.

Meanwhile, the need for donations now is greater than ever. Blood Center locations on LI have remained open

throughout the pandemic and we urge eligible donors to make an appointment at a location convenient for them.

Centers are located on Veterans Memorial Highway in Bohemia, Route 110 in Melville, and Sunrise Highway in

Massapequa. To maintain the safety of donors and staff, appointments are required and can be made online at

nybloodcenter.org. If you are eligible and able to donate we urge you to do so now and not wait for the possibility of

a Temple drive in June. B'nai Israel will get "credit" for your donation if you provide our Group Code: 62531

and Site Code: L7364.

Please do what you can now for the collective good of the entire Long Island community!
