And that gift can be giving our time, which may be even more valuable than any item we are able to buy. During Sukkot, we practice exactly this kind of giving. We invite guests to our booth. We fill it up with good food, good wine, joy, laughter and song. If the sukkot that I visited during the first days of Sukkot are any indication, then a sukkah should tremble with boisterous conversation, and mutual enjoyment. To some, this comes as a surprise. Aren’t the most important days of the Jewish year, Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, which are filled with awe, the minor key and a sense of taking our lives in our hands as we go to God in prayer. And so he points out that in Leviticus, it says, Ani Hashem Mekadisheichem (Vayikra 22:32), “I am the one who sanctifies, or betroths you to me.” It’s as if God is saying, “Behold, you are set apart, you are married to me.” It also says, “When I brought out Israel, I caused them to dwell in Sukkot.” (Vaykira 23:43) And so the Sukkah becomes the place in which we are also set aside for God. It becomes the wedding canopy. It’s important that the Jewish New Year begins with a time of joy! Sukkot is a time of widening our celebration, inviting others to join us in our Sukkah. It’s important that the Jewish year starts with a focus on hospitality, on kindness, on sharing our blessings with others. The Jewish year, beginning with this harvest festival, is a time of giving thanks for the harvest, of rejoicing in song and of feasting. Though we might think the year starts with the High Holidays, Sukkot is actually the first major biblical festival during the year. The year begins with this time of welcoming strangers, and it takes us back to those early days when we were on a honeymoon with God. Sukkot is like flipping through the photo-album. Somehow it’s when we see those pictures of how we used to live, that we remember the times when were happiest, when we were children, when we lived in complete dependency and joy. This year, may our congregation focus our attention on welcoming our new members. On sharing joy, and blessing and song and meals together. May we remember the love we have received, so that we are able to give good gifts to those we love gifts of our presence and of love. May we be blessed to live our lives and live through this Jewish calendar year, 5777, from a place of abiding blessing, of joy that bubbles up from our encounter with God and our practice of mitzvot and that joy will flow into the lives of all those around us. RABBI’S MESSAGE

Sukkot is the time of our joy – Zeman Simchateinu. What is it that brings us the most joy in life? Isn’t it giving to those we love? What state of being is more filled with joy that the possibility of giving a gift away to those whom we most love? But in Jewish thought/theology, Sukkot is understood as the culmination of this season. The proper end point, the destination toward which all this gathering together as a community, and crying out, and blasting of the Shofar has been leading.

The Sefat Emet, puts it in uniquely poignant language. He claims, “Sukkah is about Chuppah,” i.e. the booth in which we reside this week is basically similar to becoming married. In Jewish law, Chuppah is the action of moving in with the one that we marry. And so he points out that in Leviticus, it says, Ani Hashem Mekadisheichem (Vayikra 22:32), “I am the one who sanctifies, or betroths you to me.” It’s as if God is saying, “Behold, you are set apart, you are married to me.” It also says, “When I brought out Israel, I caused them to dwell in Sukkot.” (Vaykira 23:43) And so the Sukkah becomes the

place in which we are also set aside for God.

May we remember the love we have received, so that we are able to give good gifts to those we love – gifts of our presence and of love. May we be blessed to live our lives and live through this Jewish calendar year, 5777, from a place of abiding blessing, of joy that bubbles up from our encounter with God and our practice of mitzvot and that joy will flow into the lives of all those around us.

Shanah tovah! A good new year!

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It was great to see familiar and not so familiar faces at High Holiday services this year. This annual convocation has a tendency to be a little formal and short on interpersonal interaction but I thought Rabbi Slater did a wonderful job of using the opportunity to create community. As one young man commented to me at the Break-Fast, “It's not just the same old same old.” I was particularly delighted to see so many congregants blowing shofar at our annual end of Yom Kippur shofar blow off.

As I write this message, we are in the Succoth holiday period. If you want to party Jewishly, Succoth is a great time to do it. We look forward to celebrating Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah again this year with Rabbi Slater. Those of you who attended services last year can attest that we had a blast.

Intermediate Hebrew class will be starting up again Wednesday October 26 at 7PM. If you would like to develop your Hebrew skills, contact me at [email protected] to see what we can do for you.

Please be sure to come hear our visiting lecturer on the subject of “The Catholic Church and the Jews” on Saturday November 5 at 7 PM. We are fortunate to have this renowned and compelling speaker at Shaaray Tefila.

This month, in addition to our usual weekly schedule, we will be having a short Jewish Journey Friday night service on Friday November 18 at 6:30 PM followed by Shabbat dinner at the synagogue. This will be appropriate for people all ages. We hope to create a meaningful Shabbat experience for people with any level of familiarity with Jewish practice.

There is an oft quoted philosophical question: “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?” As we approach the colder seasons in the North Country and many of our regular congregants head south, we will have a challenge to attract participation

in our services and activities. We are working hard to create Jewish experiences for you. But without you, there will be no Jewish experiences. Please take advantage of what Shaaray Tefila has to offer. Please help us achieve the critical mass of participants to create meaningful Jewish life here.

THANK YOU TO SUNNY BUCHMAN for sponsoring the Break Fast in memory of her beloved husband Paul Buchman. Very special thanks go to all those of you who helped make the beautiful break-the-fast at the close of Yom Kippur possible. Thank you to the ones who prepared and others who helped with the clean-up and/or contributed various delicious dishes.

Our thanks, also, to Norman Kudan who provided us with the beautiful floral centerpiece once again this year.

We are very grateful to you all.

2016 Rosh Hashanah Floral Centerpiece

Fundraiser Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time in arranging and delivering the beautiful floral centerpieces. This year’s fundraiser was dedicated in memory of Charlotte Miller who passed away earlier this year. Charlotte leant us many years of her creative talent as Lead flower designer. We want to thank the special ladies who help arrange and deliver the floral centerpieces. Thank you to Bonnie Yanklowitz, Nancy Goldstein, Dolly Morrissey and Sharon Aronson. We couldn’t have done it without you! A very special thank you to Dolly Morrissey for chairing this event, yet again this year.

Congregation Shaaray Tefila would like to say a very special thank you to Price Chopper Golub Foundation, Binley’s

Florist, Lasting Impressions, and Wal-Marts for once again helping to support our Floral Centerpiece Fundraiser. Please remember to patronize them!

For all who attended the recent get- together at Rose Rothstein's home, it was a wonderful affair. Great food, great

company and great host, combined with Sunny Buchman's and Nancy Goldstein's planning to organize it made for an enjoyable time for all. Long time members got to know our newest congregants and vice-versa. We look forward to more new members and more enjoyable events. Student Rabbi Stephen Slater echoed everyone's enthusiasm. This was fun!

Thanks to all who attended. Larry Greenberg

Congregation Shaaray Tefila thanks each and every supporter of the synagogue for your very kind and generous donation to this years’ Yom Kippur Appeal. Thank You to all of you who pledged or made donations we have made and exceeded our goal again this year!

Congregation Shaaray Tefila recently investigated and ordered a state of the art eight camera security system for our building. The system is expandable to 16 cameras if we need them. The cost for

this system is being paid for in part with an anonymous donation and will help us in the event there are any problems. We have been extremely fortunate that we have not had any major issues but some recent events have brought home how important it is to have cameras. In addition, we had a security guard in the building during the High Holidays for everyone's safety. Larry Greenberg House Chairman

The family of Arnold Mandwelle would like to extend their warmest thank to the congregation for all of their support, kind wishes and generosity in memory of their father, Arnold Mandwelle.

Having this caring and support made this much more comforting at this time. Thank you.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Catholic Church and the Jews: the story of a recently transformed relationship.

Please join Congregation Shaaray Tefila on Saturday evening, November 5th at 7PM.

How does a religion turn from contempt to acceptance, from violence to peace, from hatred to love? In spite of the frequently sad 2000-year history of Catholic-Jewish relations, a positive relationship would be established only fifty years ago. In 1965, in the wake of the Holocaust, the Catholic Church produced Nostra Aetate, a short, yet a highly contested, hotly debated document that would fundamentally transform Catholic-Jewish relations in the years to come. How did this happen? How did 2000 years of enmity between two religions turn into deep admiration, partnership, and affection? Come find out on November 5th at 7pm. The Jewish community invites Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, and anyone in the wider public who are interested in this story to join us for a conversation with Andrew Massena, a young scholar at Boston College, about the transformation of Catholic-Jewish relations over the last fifty years.

The event will be at Shaaray Tefila, the Conservative synagogue on 68 Bay St, Glens Falls. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. A presentation will begin the event, followed by a rich discussion over tea and coffee.
